Fish - Need Help!

Recommended Posts

Alright, I admit it, I'm a southern girl, the most I know about fish is fried catfish when my family has a 'fish fry' I know fish is a good choice but I am fish deficient...any ideas or recipes to help me become fish 'pro-ficient' On a side note, Sams Club has tons of frozen fish (like individually wrapped blackend salmon, mahi mahi, talipia) anyone tried these?

Hey Shontel!

There is a tilapia fish thread somewhere around here. It has great ideas of different ways to make it.... hang on, lemme find it!

Here it is!

http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14696

Now catfish ALSO goes down real well. But the only way I really like catfish is with corn meal batter then fried. ;) good for the taste, but NOT good for the body.

Try the tilapia out. Sams has a big bag for around $10. If you want me to get with you and give you a couple of fillets (along with the lime pepper) so you can try it out first - I dont mind. Just let me know!

tilapia = yumyum!

Tilapia, flounder, orange roughy, sword, halibit and tuna steaks are wonderful, just wonderful. You can cook them on the grill with some seasoning (and aluminum foil if the fish is like flounder) or in the oven. Cook in oven on high temperature. DH sprinkles either old bay or a fish seasoning and thats it.

That all sounds great...any ideas for some one who doesn't LIKE fish? You should have seen the disappointment on my nutritionist's face when I told her I don't do fish......:phanvan

Heather, do you like tarter sauce? its a mixture of Mayonnaise and relish. You can add a dab on your fish. Thats how I started liking fish, now I love it plain.

yah, tarter sauce is the only way I'll eat fried fish. I never like to eat grilled fish, but maybe I can try it... I need to find some kinds of fish here in Portugal that I like.....they dont have grouper or mahi mahi or flounder or any thing...that i have seen.

I've had the mahi mahi from Sam's Club. It's a good texture and consistency, be sure to not over cook it. I like to marinade fish in Lawry's 30 Minute Marinade, the Sesame Ginger with Mandarin Orange juice is my favorite. It's very good but if you're not into ginger, Lawry's makes 5 or 6 different marinade flavors. Another one I really like is the Lawry's Tequila Lime 30 Minute Marinade. I usually marinade the fish for an hour (if 30 minutes is good an hour must be twice as good, right?) and then bake the fish in the oven but it's even better when my husband grills it on the barbecue.

One of our other favorites is Chef Paul Prudhomme's Magic Seasoning Blends, Blackened Redfish Magic. It's good on catfish, tilapia or salmon (and redfish presumably - lol - although I haven't tried that), and then grill it or cook it outside using a cast Iron skillet. It smokes too much from the blackened seasoning for me to want to do it in the house but it tastes great - spicy. Use lemon or lime squeezed directly on the fish or lemon juice mixed with a small amount of tartar sauce for extra flavor that smoothes out that spicy blackened flavor. I also have a recipe for a mushroom cream sauce thats GREAT on blackened fish but it's a bit high in fat and calories.

I've never been a big fan of fish but lately I've really come to enjoy it. I'm so glad because I'm scared silly to try red meat but I get tired of eating chicken every day!

Good luck.

I'm on a strict liquid diet from now until surgery...which is why im up at almost 1 am here. Im starving my tummy wont let me sleep. I'm here sipping on a yogurt. I might try some grilled fish with tartar sauce see if that helps me get use to fish.

Tarter sauce, spices, lemon, even a pat of butter (only 36 calories) makes it taste so good. You can even put salsa on your fish ;)

Wait, you're on a strict liquid diet but you're going to try grilled fish with tartar sauce? Fish can be soft but I don't think it can be sucked through a straw! Hopefully you mean you'll try it when you get to the 'between mushies and solid food" stage, right?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
