Just out of curiosity, is someone pulling a Delarla by deleting large number of threads?

What I don't like is the idea that perfectly benign threads can be pulled just because someone wants to take their toys (as it were) and go home. There's no reason for that and it can be incredibly disruptive.

That's what happened, people made themselves dissappear. They went and deleted everything, all of it, not related to hot debates, not related to anything, it's just *poof* gone.

Don't get me wrong...I don't care for this practice at all, but I support that it's available. As a poster I should have that option. As a grown-up, I don't use it.

There is the option to edit your post out. I haven't seen that mentioned so I just thought I'd bring it up. Boards that don't allow their users to delete their posts have this as an option. If it were to be used here, the threads could stay intact and anyone who wanted to make their words non-permanent can. Just edit your comment out with a space or a period, a <deleted> note -- whatever.

I'm just curious, TBM: Do you feel proprietary about threads you start? Even if they're about movies or sports or some such? If so, why?

Just musing here: I wonder if this may be side-effect of the rise of blogs and journaling on the web--maybe people who do a lot of that really DO feel this way about topics they start. I've never been into blogging or journaling online, so maybe my POV is a little different. This message board is not like a diary for me in any way. Are the lines blurring?

As for the anonymity factor, I am reasonably certain there is a way for the board owner to delete all posts made by any given person, so if that's someone's concern that can always be handled with help from the administration. I'm in no way implying that anyone should be forced to keep their own words on the board forever.

This is exactly what bothers me about it.

I have been following this thread with interest... and I have to say that I think a poster should be able to delete their own posts, but NOT the entire thread. I think it was very sad to lose the Scar Stages thread. All those pictures deleted, pages and pages. How many hundreds (thousands) of people viewed those pics to get an idea of what to expect? I know I did. That was a loss of valuable pics/information compiled for months or years.

These are my thoughts above (in Quotes) & if the scare story thread can be placed back - PLEASE do so for the benfits of everyone. I don't even have my old photos anymore(can't find them) & wanted to show a 10 mnth out shot next to the begining shot.

Its so sad- truely.

If we are voting- I vote that a LBT member can only remove what they "type" themselves & nothing else.

I hate that someone removed my thoughts & photos. Even if they did get the opportunity to start the thread BEFORE I did.

But, Alex, aren't you the one who said we should stop talking about a poster's personal reasons for removing posts? By saying that a poster has no reason for removing her posts, other than pure selfishness, aren't you contradicting yourself?

I don't think it's fair for us to judge deleters until we've been in their shoes. And, again, the reason for deleting a thread shouldn't matter. Who's going to become the reason police and say which reasons are more legitimate than others?

Maybe this is hard for some people to understand because we feel differently about being open with our lives. Personally, when I don't feel comfortable in a situation anymore, I wipe the slate clean and move on. When I realize that certain people are no longer good for me, I drop them completely. So I can understand that when someone doesn't feel good on the board anymore, she wants to wipe herself away from everyone's memory. Some people consider this cowardly, and that's ok, too. But none of us are going to change each other by labeling, calling names, or assigning what we think are reasons to someone else's actions.

I wasn't talking about THIS specific situation, StrawartS, but future situations. I agree that we can't get into deciding which threads are deleteable and which aren't. That's why I think NONE should be deletable rather than ALL of them.

And again, wiping the slate clean is always possible and would remain so. If someone wants THEIR posts and their very identity wiped from the board I'm sure that can be done.

The quote button is very valuable to direct your post at someone who had a point you want to address... if I reply to a point but several people post in-between their post and mine; then it helps keep the flow of the conversation. It also assists to keep that point in the thread in case they remove their post. It can be misused but its better then the flow of a post getting distorted.

People can't always wipe the slate clean... if you say something to someone in person you can't wipe their memory or repair feelings. If someone wants to leave a place they don't automatically have the right to take every trace of their selves with them. You can't do that in real life and most of the times you can't do that in Cyberspace.

Yes, I suppose I do. Or maybe I just feel a sense of ownership for each of our words, posts and threads. Those of mine and of others. I'm not sure why, except out of some sense of responsibility, self-repsect, and a personal mission to respect others, even when I disagree? Who knows why.

I'm not responsible for what others post on a thread I start, or how they may reply to a post of mine, but I do "own" my own words. And if you post on my thread, there is a certain respect I feel the need to give you, by preserving your words. And it's egg on my face if I post on a thread that gets impulsively deleted. Oh well.

And then there's the matter of "the reason police". It doesn't matter why someone deleted, it was their thread to delete. My guess is many many folks will hold back on future threads started by those known to delete. And that is how it should be.

There's nothing wrong with "the system" or "the rules" or "the policy & procedure" by which LBT is Moderated. It's that people are shocked/surprised/hurt/confused or whatever by the actions of others. Nothing needs to be fixed. We just broadened our understanding, that's all.

Hey, k@t, how'd you like to dig up the Scar thread started by ~nana~ so Christina can get her pics back? Could you really do that? Of course you CAN, but would you?!

Christina, maybe you can ask one of the moderators to pull the photos off the deleted thread from their section. I'm sure they would be happy to help you out.

to delete an entire thread would have to be approved first; or make it to where you can delete only all of your personal posts? I thought you could go through and delete your posts already?

I deleted some of mine and combined things like NSV's with other posts since I tend to ramble on so much lol

Personally, if I want to delete something it is my right to do so; if not then those rules should be set up at the beginning and no other option allowed. It's like changing the rules of a football game in the middle if you don't like who is winning.

since they can be brought back, can the scar stages be copied and pasted and brought back? That thread was really an inspiration (oh boy opening a can of worms here)

maybe Im just too new, but why are sex, politics and other stuff allowed on a board about weight loss and weight loss surgery? Certainly that is apt to cause problems.

Not that I am against it, I have no problems if there is a place to post things like this - others who are offended need not read or reply to those posts It would be like me getting offended because there is a religious channel on my cable network or a porn channel. I as an adult know when something is not worth going into (like the DaVinci thread) I read it, thought about it and even though I had my own personal opinion, I really wondered what it had to do with WLS.

Sometimes things are taken the wrong way because of emotions, chemicals or hormones - or just plain anger and frustration.

If someone takes something the wrong way or something is said to you, then it is your perogative not to respond or send that person a PM. With a situation like this, all this does is hurt others.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and it is very unfair for anyone to beat down someone else for their free rights of thought and speech.

Sorry if this offends anyone, I just hate to see anyone leave here since this is supposed to be a place of love and support.

Ok, I'm going to get shit for this, but I am pretty opposed to sneaky detective work being used to find these deleted threads. Didn't we just spend 3 pages talking about how people delete threads for personal reasons? Going in through the back door to bring back deleted threads seems like you're saying "You can run, but you can't hide." It feels very spiteful, and I wish we could get over this issue and leave deleting posters alone.

Secondly, it seems that every time we have a controversial discussion someone says "what does this have to do with WLS?" In case it's not quite obvious, a lot of us on here have met in real life and are friends. The "Lounge" exists so that we can share non-WLS things about our lives. To suggest that REAL people who have REAL feelings for each other stick to only one topic is ridiculous.
