Was banded on 9/12 I started on mushy yesterday which consists of Protein Shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt, mashed potatoes, sf pudding, blended soups....today I had two Protein shakes, two 1/2 cups of cottage cheese, sf ice pop and yogurt....the problem is I am hungry!!! My band is not filled yet so I have no restriction I am getting 1st fill on 10/10 will the hunger go away once I get the fill? Is this normal? I don't want to screw this up...does anyone know how many calaries I should be consuming now at this stage?

It's completely normal...where you are right now is probably the toughest, because your swelling from surgery has gone down and you have no restriction, but are on a restricted diet. It will get better. I didn't have my full restriction until probably my 3rd fill. I have never concentrated on calories, my focus was always Protein and carbs, and that has worked for me.

My nutritionist has told me once I am healed and eating on maintenance 900-1200 calories daily with 70g of Protein. I asked if I should be more concerned w calories or Protein and she said protein is most important. Foods high in protein tend to have better nutritional content.

You are not even 2 weeks from surgery, so concentrate on protein, Water and healing. good luck to you.

in regards to the calorie intake, did your doctor not give you guidelines to follow? i would confer w/then if you do not know how many calories etc to consume. on this forum, we all are different and you will come across many different numbers and opinions. for this, id def ask the dr to find out what is right for you :)

being hungry, that means you are healing!! great job. as the swelling goes down from surgery, you will get hungry (i know i did). its a good thing for real.

you are still very new to having major surgery, dont stress. sip sip sip and rest and allow yourself to heal. (congrats on being banded by the way).

i am sure you will do fantastic. you already are

Like the rest of the posters said, you should be focusing on Protein and fluids. I didn't start calorie counting until in my 5th week when I started on solids. The first 4 weeks I really focused on making sure I didn't dehydrate. I drank lots of fluids, Water gatorade, apple juice. chicken broth with Protein powder. For your mushy stage you can Also eat avacados and part skim ricotta cheese, laughing cow lite cheese is great. Also, a can of tuna (drained) in Water and (blenderized) with one wedge of laughing cow is deeeeeeeeeeeelish!

Remember 4-6 weeks for your body to heal!

Take care,

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
