PBs: Gagging, chewing, and more!

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have more PB questions.

Which is more likely the cause of PBing for you:

food not chewed thoroughly?

or

The wrong type of food?

How long until you know you have a problem?

After a few bites?

After the whole meal?

Once you know you are "stuck", can you gag yourself and expel the offender?

Has anyone tried the meat tenderizer and does it work? Does anything else help? Why is it a bad idea to take a sip of Water? It seems like that would help lubricate and move the food along.

thanks everyone!

Both

After a few bites

Nope

Anything to tenderize meat should help. (Marinade)

Don't eat things you know won't go down

Putting Water on top of the pb, just makes it worst, it just sits on top, it doesn't go down.

The definition of the "wrong" type of food IS food that can't be chewed thoroughly, so these are pretty much the same thing. There are more reasons that something won't go down, and any of these might cause a PB. The worst one for me is one you didn't mention: one bite too many.

The only remedy for me has been to walk away, stand up, move around, possibly get some fresh air until my body ejects whatever it is by itself. I've only been able to induce ejection once or twice, and the result of that was to induce actual vomiting so I'm not inclined to ever try it again.

What to do? Just avoid it. Eat slowly, eat carefully, don't overdo it.

I have pb mostly from not chewing food/swallowing too big a bite and it usually happens when i take a bite standing up. Most meals when I'm focused I'm ok - but it's that piece of food when I get home to tide me over until the meal or eating while I'm preparing my meal.

I've only thrown up a few times - mostlly it sits there until it goes down but the throw up is the worst - i hurt for a day or so and try to stay on liquids until the swelling goes down.

It's scary and I wish i would quit doing it - i seem to repeat my mistakes even with this negative reinforcement - the BAND.

>>>this is how I always do it.. It dont come up on its own.. I get lots of slime when I do this.. I am TRYING NOT TO DO THIS>. I dont even know if this is a PB or not.

Option 3 - eating too quickly, no matter how well I chew. I have to put my fork down between EVERY bite, for my entire meal. It usually takes me about 45 minutes to eat, which is really annoying if I'm out with people who don't know I'm banded. Also, not drinking hot tea before I eat will cause an instant golfball.

How long until you know you have a problem?

After a few bites?

After the whole meal?

Immediately. No, wait, more like yesterday.

Once you know you are "stuck", can you gag yourself and expel the offender?

When I know that it's going to come back up, I usually just stand over the sink or toilet. I'll start sliming pretty quickly, and I have to spit all that into the receptacle. I have a very sensitive gag reflex, so usually the action of spitting a few times helps it come up right away. The problem I have is NOT being able to stop gagging once it starts. Especially when I feel food on the back of my tongue - I had a rice PB a few days ago, and those little kernels would not come all the way up until I gagged for quite a while. And then I get to the point where I'm gagging so much that I'm crying and I can't breathe...someone remind me why I did this again?

Has anyone tried the meat tenderizer and does it work? Does anything else help? Why is it a bad idea to take a sip of Water? It seems like that would help lubricate and move the food along.

I usually take small sips of hot tea at the beginning of my meal to make sure the first few bites are moving along. There's some sort of physics explanation about how Water on top of a blockage creates a plunger effect, but all I can tell you is that it HURTS.

NewSho pointed out in another thread that we bandsters talk so much smack about RNYers and their dumping syndrome, but that PBing and golfballs are not any better. I thought that comment was really on point and deserves repeating.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
