Why do we allow temptation?

I am going to word this kindly and with concern - I'm not ranting at anyone okay? I'm caring here. I'm not waving the big stick of judgement.

Why bandsters and and the bandless, are you allowing temptation through your front door?

I have seen many posts, by many people (the most recent was the evil cookie dough thread that triggered this post) talking about the terrible food they are allowing in their house.

If its not cookie dough, its pizza being brought home by the spouse, ice cream to italian food.

I fully understand that many of us have a clearly defined eating disorder (because thats how I view a lot of obesity) and that we suffer terrible cravings, but I have to ask why more of us (you) aren't putting our foot down and saying "GET THIS CRAP OUTA MY HOUSE".

This comes from my current dietary success. I am losing weight because there is no crap in the house. The chips are gone, the bread is gone, there's no ice cream, no beer, nothing I can go "ooo I want that" with.

I think its about time we started fwapping the Pizza Delivery spouse, beating the candy man and denying sexual favors to Kenny Cookiedough.

Come on folks, its hard enough to live the healthy life outside of your front door, please, my friends, stop bringing the crap inside your door ;)

Perhaps you might cry "But what of my family? They like ...". Well one of two things has to happen, success in your weight loss and ultimate health, or your family eating cookie dough and pizza.

For me? its a no brainer.

This post is not intended to offend or upset. If it does upset and offend you, all I can say is that this is my rant and I won't apologise for it.

"I am, for the most part, reasonable."

Forgive me for saying this but it doesn't seem like you are. I however do love these threads. They remind me of soaps :)

It sounds like you are a bit judgemental. Please don't feel the responsibility to 'fix' anyone here. Some of us are just here to vent. It's kind of a girl thing.

I find your statement that I am judgemental, judgemental.

(*dons flame-proof suit and prepares for it*)

Everyone is judgemental at some point, on some point, for some reason, every day.

Try and get through the day without having one thought that is a criticism of someone else. I'll bet you can't.

If you can, you're probably fooling yourself.

We judge people on TV. We judge our neighbors, our friends, our family, our co-workers, people on the street, people who cut us off in traffic, people who jump ahead in a line at the store. So maybe you don't do it here. Or maybe you do it, but you don't actually post it. Or maybe you do it on another board or email list or silently to yourself while you're sitting in traffic caused by a moron who had to change lanes at the last minute.

Something as simple as having a thought such as

"I would have done that differently...." or

"That's the wrong way to do that." or

"You should try it this way."

is judgemental, because you are criticizing someone else's actions, even if you're doing it nicely.

So, could we please try and refrain from referring to people as judgemental? Seeings as how unless you are an absolute saint, or someone who does not have a lot of thoughts, we are all guilty of it.

If we could perhaps leave that word out of these sorts of discussions, we might actually get to have the discussions without them turning into a mess of hard feelings, anger and outright name-calling.

Feel free to judge my assessment of humankind. It's in our nature, as human beings.

To the original topic on hand, I do find it easier to fight temptation if I leave the bad stuff out of my house. And like others have pointed out, that also means fighting temptation at the grocery store as well. Funny story on that; I had a root canal last week, and went to the grocery store. I meant to get a pint of lowfat icecream as something soft to have, and a planned treat. I was so determined to not put crap in my cart, that I didn't get my planned ice cream!

But on the other hand, sometimes I do well having stuff in my house that I just don't eat much of, planned treats in my alotted calories... and sometimes I eat too much no matter what I do (it feels like). I kind of go through stages. Fortunately, right now I happen to be in a stage where I quit arguing with my band for a while, lol.

Geez, can we debate without getting personal! Mommy Daddy Sissy Bubba Stop fighting! (picture itty bitty child squalling this, it made me laugh).

:update:

Promises to the contrary, the junk food was not gone when I got home last night. And I didn't get home until 9PM. Oh well, I will be proud of hubby's good intentions and have an empowering clean-out the junk fest when I get home tonight.

We have absolutely NO junk in our house... Hubby doesn't need it and neither do I. If it was there, we would eat it all up!!!

People come over and look in our fridge and then look at us like we should be bones... :)

My husband is 6'-4" and currently weighs 325... no bones to either of us!

Here's my take on it. IF it's supposed to be 'healthier' for me, why would I encourage those who I love to continue eating the things that were 'bad' for me? So they look good today, what will they look like 20 yrs from now, if they continue? As parents, we do have some control over what sort of example we set for our children who have OUR genes. Hmm...

As spouses, it's not okay for me to clog my arteries with cholesterol laden foods, but it's okay for my husband to? Hmm...

Somehow, I'm thinking that because I got to the drastic point of needing weight loss surgery should be some sort of sign to those I love that maybe we should all take a look at what is better for our general health as a family unit. As with those banded, nothing is written in concrete, but making good choices MOST of the time can benefit everyone included. :)

Ok. my $5.30 cents worth.......

FIRST TOPIC: I don't keep junk in the house because I am addicted to food. My husband is entitled to eat what he wants because he isn't addicted to food. He does chose to keep the stuff out of my face. Eats while watching the football game, respects me enough not to eat in bed. It works for us, but doesn not have to work for others here.

I don't smoke anymore and don't keep them in the house. My friend keeps a carton in the house and that makes her feel better. I don't tell her she is wrong, it works for her.

These difference make us all unique... and that is why I love it here.

OFF TOPIC: Someone starts a thread.... someone adds to the thread by giving their opinion of the topic. the people who posted before them come back to "quote" them and make them feel like their opinon is wrong because they don't agree with them.

As said before.... everyone is entitled to their opinion. Let the comments roll.. don't keep going back and forth... It is causing each one of these threads to turn nasty.

TAKE AWAY THAT "QUOTE" OPTION AND EVERYONE STOP TRYING TO RAM THEIR DIFFERENCES DOWN THE OTHERS THROAT...

Have a great day because I plan on it :)

I am laughing out loud at your post... (sorry for the hijack dawg) seems kind of hypocritical... what you are saying there....

Yes, I am instigating a back and forth... but that is my opinion or choice... then you say Stop quoting, but that is what we do to make sure the wording isn't misconstrued...

I just find your post very contradicting...

And (grabbing his thread back) quoting prevents happy post deleters from ruining the flow of a thread.

It's also an excellent means of directing a post at someone. This is a debate, we can't look at each other so we demonstrate specifically what we are responding too by using a quote.

Please note that I have a catch and release policy for my thread.

Anyone who takes the thread entirely will be liable for a 300 dollar fine and confiscation of their computer.

I don't care what you say Dawg, I just find it judgmental.

"judg·men·tal ( j¾j-mµn"tl) adj. 1. Of, relating to, or dependent on judgment: a judgmental error. 2. Inclined to make judgments, especially moral or personal ones: a marriage counselor who tries not to be judgmental... or nonjudgmental, like an online forum that likes to use alternative spelling of words.

Kare, I find your post silly.

and secondly. I'm English. I'm not American. Spell the word the English way while on my thread eh?

I won't judge yours, if you don't judge mine.

judgment, judgement

Don't turn me into a spelling stalker that follows you around and checks all your posts :)

LMAO at spelling stalker... that's gonna be a full time job here!

(carefully sweeping all my own posts under the rug)

Don't turn me into a spelling stalker that follows you around and checks all your posts :)

Gosh, you would DO that for ME??? That would be sooo helpful. Thanks!

(Oh, while you're at it, will ya grab those typos & redline the grammar for me? I've noticed a real dive in my composition proficiency lately.)
