What Pre-Op Diet Are You On?

I started my Pre-Op diet on June 11th my surgery is scheduled for June 24th 2011.

The Pre-Op Diet my Surgeon recommends is the low carb diet similar to Atkins for 1-2 weeks. My Surgeon said that this diet will shrink the liver, because the body will burn up all of the fat that is stored in the liver when you don't give it carbs to burn first.

My diet consists of something like. eggs and bacon for Breakfast, pork chop for lunch, hamburger patty for dinner. It is not a hard diet to follow.

I know some patient's have had to go on a liquid diet Pre-OP. What Pre-Op diet did you have to do?

I'm on Optifast Protein Shakes five times a day. It's not that bad, just watching others eat is the worst part but I have to remind myself that I'm doing this for me and to get healthy.

I'm on the same diet. Today is my fourth day and I'm starving :(

The first couple days were the worse. It will get better I promise.

Yes its been a week for me on the liquid diet and the first 3 days were brutal but it has got a lot better now..so keep your head up :-)

I start my pre-op diet tomorrow, surgery is July 6th, and I will be on a low fat diet. Started my pre-op diet alittle over the weekend and lost 5 lbs so far. Good luck everyone with your surgery and dieting. It can be frustrating.

Are you guys losing weight? I lost 2lbs the first 2 days and nothing since. I'm hungry ALL the time!!

I started my pre-op diet today (surgery July 5). It's 2 weeks - 3 Protein shakes a day, 2 lien cuisines per day (or equivalent - smart ones etc.) and up to 2 cups vegetables per day. It's really not bad compared to what I'm seeing on here... Good luck to us all - would be nice to lose about 7-10 pounds going into the surgery so the pre-op diet will be good for that!

Allison - this looks almost familiar. Mine is:

Day 1 and 2 - liquids only

Days 3-12 - do not exceed 1000 cals - two to three pro-shakes and a lean cuisine-type meal not to exceed 300 cals.

Days 13-14 - liquids only

My surgeon does not require a preop diet. My surgery is on 6/29. I think I will go low carb & add a Protein shake daily starting the 22nd just so my body doesn't freak out after surgery.

Also my surgeon said that out of the thousands of surgeries he's ever done only 2 he could not perform b/c the liver was too big and one of those included a patient whose liver was all the way to her belly button! Crazy!

Sweet!!! good luck tomorrow!

Hello future bandesters.today is my last day for the liquid diet.tomorrow is the big day im so excited...

2 week liquids. Syntrax protein shakes are awesome! Roadside lemonade and Fuzzy navel flavors. 100 calories and 22 grams of protein per scoop. I'm not big on mixing powders with water, but these taste absolutely incredible in cold water.. nice alternative to vanilla, chocolate, strawberry.

I get banded July 1... can't wait!

I dont have a date set yet do to being on a six month supervised diet. I see the surgeon in August. My doctor told me they will require me to be on a two week liquid diet that will only consist of skim milk!!! Has anyone had to do this pre-op? I am in Vancouver, WA.

My pre op diet is 3-4 protein shakes a day! I love my shakes and they are filling... I had a chocolate one for breakfast, chicken noodle soup flavored for dinner, Strawberry for evening snack and since I work nights I will be putting the chocolate in my coffee. I mix them with 8oz of fat free milk. 60 and 120 grams of protein a day for me. unsure.gif

Right now I am on veggies, meat & 3 servings of daily. My 2 week liquid diet (2 weeks b4 surgery): 4 Protein drinks, 3 daily 1 cp skim milk or light yogurt, 1 cup raw veggies, and 3 servings of benefiber powder mixed in water. THATS it!! plus broth, water, tea, etc. I going to do it, but OH MY! How can I exercise with such a diet???

Wow, You love your shakes? What kind are you on? I'm on the first day of 3-4 shakes aday and I just about gag on mine. I'm on unjury shakes.

I have been drinking Unjury shakes as well. I work for Safeway so I have my Starbucks make it with non fat milk and two shot of espresso. It tastes so much better. I use the chocolate flavor.

I'm required to lose 10-15 pounds before my surgery which is July 18th. But not required to be on a liquid diet. This week is my last junk week, so I've purchased some double stuffed oreos and they will be my LAST. :D

Reading everyone's suggestions I will probably do Slim Fast High Protein shakes, and up my veggie intake, and no sugar...God help me on that one!

What a huge variation out there for the pre-op diet.

Mine is supposed to be just Protein shakes, three a day. But there are also these guidelines that my surgeon gave me:

75-90 g protein per day

less than40 g carbohydrates

600-800 calories per day

less than 30 g fat

So I have been making a lot of my own concoctions with some real food. I got the roasted red pepper/tomato Soup in a carton and used a cup of that, some soy protein, some chicken broth and some V8 juice along with some black pepper and a touch of hot sauce.

This makes a nice savory option so I don't alsways have to be drinking sweet tasting things, and I can regulate things so I keep within the guidelines.

Also I put a lot of ice, a few frozen strawberries and some real lemon juice with my whey powder and splenda, of course, and it is pretty delicious. I just hate the idea of drinking fake 'manufactured' food instead of the real thing.

I have lost 8 pounds in the last 6 days doing this! I have had waves of weakness when I had to go and sit/lie down for a few minutes. I have to be careful in the heat to drink lots of Water or my favorite grapefruit crystal lite drink. Yesterday I made the mistake of going way too long without a Protein shake and ended up eating some roasted chicken--maybe 4 oz. It was a good wake-up call that I have to be taking in my shakes every 4 hours or pay the price.

Thank goodness I am very occupied during the day with work. Otherwise, it would be much harder. As it is, I have had an easier time of it than I expected. My surgeon expects me to continue this diet for 3 weeks AFTER surgery, as well, so even more reason to make it liveable from the start.

Best of luck, everybody!
