Newbie and Scared to death!

I'm older, 40, been overweight my entire life. I'm looking for permanent loss. Know very little of this entire process and know no one who has had it done.

Scared to death to choose this option and swore I would never have surgery. However I have tried everything and nothing has worked. Have two wonderful children and I want to be here for them till I'm old old old!

40 is hardly old..........and we're all overweight if we're having lap-band surgery. You can learn about the process here, in an informational session with your doc, at other websites, by reading Jean's book "on the bandwagon"(http://jean-onthebandwagon.blogspot.com/), and other hospitals in your area that have a bariatric surgery center.

It is a decision that you need to research, compare options, and decide for yourself. The band is only a tool.........it's not magic. Without your complete involvement, weight loss can also fail with the band................but with your involvement, it can succeed beyond wildest dreams.

So specifically what are you scared about that others can help with? Name your fears, and start working through them if this is an option you want to investigate.

LOL I love being 40! I guess my biggest fears are the surgery, complication and the permanency of it all.

Rather than lots of us trying to sum up the band, I think you should try wandering around the lapband site to learn more about the band, risks, etc. Then read postings here about the experiences. There is SO much information that can't just be answered by such a broad post. Try exploring this site under pre-op or other specifics and you should find a lot of info. Nobody can make this choice but you and it's not right for everyone.

Maybe consider going to a seminar where a dr explains the procedure, etc. That's where I think most, if not all of us, started.
