What does restriction feels like when swallowing?

Recommended Posts

Had 1st fill appt and was so nervous. Doc did it while I stood up and he sat. had to swallow Water while he was filling and he couldnt believe I drank 2 cups without flinchng. I think he got a little annoyed when I kept saying I dont feel anything. He said in back of throat should be a tightness perhaps. then he proceeded to push in more until I hiccuped and belched and could fill liquid going down. I got 3 1/2 CC's in a 14CC APL band. He said keep in mind youre swallowing water, which is different than food and I dont want you too tight. Ok so my question is what does it supposed to feel like when going down if youve had too much? Is there a tightness, lump in throat?:sneaky: or maybe im not phrasing question right. Some one help me out

I have had a number of fills and have no idea what feeling he is talking about. The only thing I have to do when I get a fill is drink Water afterwards to make sure it is going down OK. To me aiming for a feeling in the throat would seem to indicate that the band would be tooooooo tight!

It doesnt feel like anything, you just get full faster than normal.

There's no "feeling" unless you're overly tight or dont chew enough or take a huge bite, then you feel that feeling like when you eat too fast and it sticks in your chest. You know, in your old life when you buy a Big Mac and its so yummy that you wolf it down and then have to pound yourself on the chest? Its a bit like that for me, only more intense.

I guess I can feel it hit my stomach and stay there, the feelings are really hard to describe. I can feel that I cant eat a huge amount quickly. But a bite and a swallow feels normal.

I feel absolutely nothing different when swallowing--and I have good restriction.

When I feel my band in action, it's toward the end of a meal.

I didn't feel it when I swallowed but I did feel the Water "trickle" down through the band...that could be what he is talking about... about 5 min after the fill was complete I felt like I had a lump in my throat...and that could be what he was talking about as well.

Ok. That's what it is. He filled that band tight so I could see what that feeling was then he let it out. I feel the lump in my throat when I tried to drink real fast like I used to. I got a lump in back of throat and I could feel it trying to go down. I'm learning. Next fill in 4 wkd right after thanksgiving wknd:-). I just hate not being able to eat solids for next 2 days

I got a feeling as if something was stuck in my throat, mostly like an air bubble or when you drink a carbonated drink too fast. I told him that I had to burp to clear it which I promptly did and the feeling went away. I had 2.5 cc's as my first fill on Tuesday.

Today I think I experienced my first sliming event. Not pleasant!

Ok explain to me what sliming is and PB is?

If something gets a bit stuck at the stoma, you will start to produce a lot of saliva/foamy stuff - that's your body trying to lubricate to get it down. It feels like a big lump in your chest and your mouth water's profusely and you cant swallow the saliva as you're already blocked. You have to spit.

That may progress to a PB if the offending item doesnt move. That's a productive burp, or a vomit. Its different for different people, some people can literally open their mouth and let the offending item come up, even discreetly into a napkin, for me, its a huge event, not terribly painful but uncomfortable, and loud/coughing, much like vomiting but without horrid nausea, stomach acid and huge quantities.

I think I could count on my hands how often that's happened to me in five years of being banded.

Feels like...nothing. As with Betsy, I don't feel it until towards the end of the meal and then it's more a feeling that I've had enough. If I take one more bite, then I get a physical backlash of pain and that means 'too much'.

Sliming is when you get stuck. The slime doesn't go down for me because I'm stuck and all I can do is bend over and let it urp right back out. I slime when I forget to take a small bite or chew well. PBing is productive burping. It occurs when the food is trying to go through and with enough of these little burps, at least for me, it will. Still, I have an uncomfortable feeling similar to being stuck, only not as painful, until the food goes through, at which time the PBing stops. I try to avoid both sliming and PBing.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
