re "naughty bag" (love that name): Just say thank you and then throw it away when they've left or are not looking or re-gift it to someone w/o a weight problem.

We're lucky in that we live out where no one trick or treats. Buying stuff you don't like is a good idea. Could you stash it somewhere you wouldn't have easy access to it till the big night? My dh brought home tortilla chips today.. I yelled at him to put them out of my sight .. mad that he bought them in the first place!!

My wife LOVES candy korn. We have done extenstive research to try to find a sugar free version. Hahahahahahah! there is 4 types of suger in the stuff! Sugar, corn Syrup, confectioner’s sugar and honey glycerin.

We will not be home this year for halloween so no candy will enter our house!

Melissannde, try to cut dh some slack. Just coz we can't eat stuff don't mean others can't. I do understanad the temptation factor!

Would you say cut some slack to a person who brought in alcohol when there was a recovering alcoholic in the house??

I'm not saying they can't eat it, there's plenty of places other than the house they can have it.... just don't bring it home.

I'm doing that same thing. There will be NO chocolate in my house! Especially no Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

I didn't do it on purpose but I am going away for Halloween this year and am SO happy! Not only do I not have to bring candy- but my son won't be bringing all that candy home either.

I am going to stock my candy dish with those Peanut Butter candies that are usually wrapped in orange or black waxed paper - I couldn't stand getting those in my halloween bucket as a kid!! LOL

I cannot come within a mile of a reese's Peanut Butter cup though!

Wait a minute...candy corn isn't made or corn?? LOL. Darn i thought I was going to get my serving of veggies for the day!! I am soooo weak for candy corn. My wife won't buy it because I'll eat the whole bag. I'm buying licorice for the trick or treaters. Eww. lol.

But my kids usually have a contest to see who can bring home the most candy. And of course you have to "inspect" the candy before they can eat it. You wouldn't want anything to be hidden in the candy would you? lol.

OK OK!! I'll be good. As long as there are no candy corns and kit kats I'll be just fine. lol.

The kids (I've got 4 of them) candy will amazingly disappear around Tuesday never to be seen or heard from again. They don't need all of that junk food any way. I will end up sending it to school with my mom (a teacher) and to my dad's work. I would send it with Hubby, but he would end up eating it. He doesn't need it either.

Yes. I would. The recovering alcoholic's sobriety is his/her own responsibility.

Yes. I would. The recovering alcoholic's sobriety is his/her own responsibility.

While I agree that it is ultimately the alcoholic's responsibility to remain sober, it's helpful when you have a supportive spouse. It seems unrealistic, if not cruel, to expect an addict to stay strong early on in their sobriety when their spouse is routinely pouring a scotch night cap.

I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect some support from those who live in the same house as you, especially in the early stages of this wl journey when we are still trying to break old habits and create new healthier ones.

ETA; Thankfully we live in a rural area where there aren't any kids trick or treating. I love candy corn and I'm just glad I don't have to test my resolve this early on. =)

My sister (who has always been thin, 5'6", 124 lbs) brought over a bunch of miniature halloween candy on Sat for the "kids" (they are 20 and 21). All the good stuff: reeses PB cups, almond joy, heath bars, bubble gum, snickers ... Initially I thought, "oh nooooo you didn't!" But, amazingly -- and I don't know whether to credit my band, or healthier eating or what -- but I ate 2, count'em 2 pieces of candy last night and that was it! I don't even know who that person was that could just eat 2 miniature candies and be done!!! I could have brought some to work with me this morning .. .I didn't ... I just ate a piece of fruit!!! OMG! I don't even know who I have become ... BUT I SURE DO LIKE HER! I will not pretend that I don't still enjoy chocolate candy. I don't use "willpower" and deprive myself. But, with the help of the band I am able to eat 2 miniature candies and be satisfied. For me, that is amazing.

I am almost 16 months out and I am thankful every day (even on the bad days) that I have my band. I have been slow to get into the groove of healthier eating and consistent exercise, but I never gave up. And I continue to lose weight. Take heart newbies that are being challenged by halloween candy, in a year you may feel very differently about candy -- especially when you get to choose between a chocolate bar or a size 6 or 9 or 12 dress! LOL

I am with you all! I can't bring it into the house. I found some of those plastic spider rings that come 50 to a bag and that is what I plan on giving out. My 12y/o said we are gonna get egg'd! So I will buy some candy that I hate the day before to add to it. It is not just the candy - it is the parties with cupcakes and goodies that are for everyone. I LOVE LOVe LOVE cupcakes. I will have one........but I will prepare for it.:smile2:

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
