    Can't stop losing weight

    You will find your balance with all of this. It’s a strange thing to experience for yourself, Right? I can relate to many of the post on how it messes with you when you hit goal. It took time for my mind to catch up and to see myself correctly.(body dysmorphia) It was something I had to work on. Wow. I get it. I would never in my life expect to say the words I need to STOP losing weight. My inner obese woman. *smile* had a hard time wrapping my head around it. People mean well, but comments like you look sick, your too thin, when are you going to stop losing weight. it's not helpful. It's hard enough for you to deal with rapid weight loss.     Reactive Hypoglycemia

    Hi I've just been searching for this topic as I've recently realised I have just started showing symptoms of Reactive Hyplogylcemia. I'm exactly one year post-op sleeve surgery and I had no idea us sleevers could suffer these symptoms. I'm a vegetarian so trying to cut out carbs has been a huge challenge for me and must admit that recently they have come back into my diet and my weightloss has also stalled. I now find that if I try and exercise in the mornings I have a massive hypo attack, the shakes, sweating, low blood sugar, feel like I'm going to faint, need to sit down and then an urgency to eat something. I then continue to feel terrible for the rest of the day like I'm all washed out and very tired even though I've done almost nothing. This is a very worrying new complication of the sleeve surgery that I did not sign up for and I'm trying to find out as much as possible about the condition so I can learn how to manage it. I'm confused as to whether I need to cut the carbs or increase them? I've been eating about 1,000 calories a day but burning around 2,700 cals per day (I wear a BodyMedia monitor so I know exactly what I'm using). I'm now really worried about this new development.. I'm seeing my surgeon next week for my one year review, I will be asking about this as from what I've researched, it seems as though there are a lot of people post bariatric surgery complaining of the problem and not much can be done from what I know??. Mine so far has been manageable but I am very worried it might get worse and I've read some people having their Pancreases removed which seems very extreme!. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Prior to surgery I had PCOS, under-active thyroid and had been told years ago that I was insulin resistent but I never had diabetes. I must say, had I known about this complication it would have made me consider very carefully whether I should do this? Please has anyone any advice as it is worrying me a lot??
  3. I have to be pretty careful what I do eat before not-eating for a while/fasting. Anything that spikes my insulin response (that can include too much protein or something with hidden sugar like carby bread) and I'm guaranteed reactive hypoglycaemia three hours later. I hate it! But if I'm good, I'm fine. I'm doing 18:6 fasting no probs if I make sensible choices and I'm so attune to hypos I can sense when they are coming pretty early on and then I pop a glucose tablet or take a teaspoon of maple syrup. I've got it down to a fine art because I HATE hypos (T2 diabetic in remission here).
  4. Hi forum... I am 13 years out from RNY and I am back into the cycle of insulin resistance and reactive hypo ... anyone else struggling with this? It all started about 7 years ago when I became allergic to wheat and had to switch to a rice based diet cause of my allergy... my body just pushes too much insulin out when I eat carbs... and rice really make a me spike... then crash and burn. Would love to hear from others who have struggled with this due to PCOS... that is what started he whole cycle for me. MaryJo RNY on 8/2/04 290/130/215 current
  5. Hi everyone. New to the forum. I had gastric bypass in 2010. It has been six and half years. I weighed 232 pounds prior to sx. Within 9 months I weighed 145 pounds and that is pretty much where I have stayed for the past six years. I wear a size 8. I weigh every day and when I hit 150 I cut back until I am at 145 again. I still "dump" almost weekly but not as severely or as easily as in the beginning. By "dump" I mean if I eat too much sugar I feel nauseous and need to lie down for awhile. No sweating, no beating heart, just want to throw up but can't. miserable. One year after sx at my check up my labs were normal except for K was low. I did not do any more follow ups until this summer. I called my bariatric surgeons office and explained I wanted to touch base. I just left my appointment. Oh...I have a confession. Four years ago I quit taking my mult-Vitamin and Calcium. I have been religious with my B12 and VitD however. My labs were all completely normal. I did confess my lapse of the multi and calcium to the doc; to my relief he told me since my labs were normal that essentially I am absorbing what I need from my food. He told me to keep doing what I am doing and I told him he probably would not see me again unless I encountered a problem. In addition to still dumping (which I am glad I do; but he said is patients usually do not dump so far out) I have an occasional episode of reactive hypo-glycemia. If I eat clean I can avoid both situations but I still have the head that got me fat in the first place, so there you have it. Just thought some might be interested in this info from someone a ways out from sx.

    Reactive Hypoglycemia After Bariatric Surgery

    I have never had Hypoglycemia before nor have I ever been Diabetic. I have previously been diagnosed as insulin resistant but since my sleeve surgery a year ago I have recently developed the symptoms and have had a number of scary 'hypo' episodes when commencing exercise especially in the morning. This is causing me great concern, I didn't sign up for this surgery to become sicker than I was before it. I hope I can get some help on how to manage the symptoms as from what I've read up about, many bariatric patients end up developing reactive hypoglycaemia which I had no idea about until I started getting the symptoms. Does anyone know how best to deal with this? I want to be able to exercise but for the last few weeks I've been unable to manage much before the sweats, the shakes, and feeling like I'm going to pass out, and worse I want to eat!! My weightloss is at a stall, nearly 2 months and no change. Would appreciate any guidance. Please also be aware that this problem occurs to many many Bariatric patients quite often some time after their surgery and from what I've read there is no cure, just guidelines to manage it. Essentially though our Pancreas are delivering too much insulin into our bodies which is what causes the hypo. I'm seeing my surgeon next week for my 1 year review and my GP next week for bloods to see if there is any help I can get for this condition.

    Foods that make you dump

    Definitely regular icecream and not much of it on an empty stomach. I stole about 3 or 4 spoons of my hubby's Ben & Jerry's at the movies once and about 20 mains later I got the shakes, feeling faint, nauseous etc. Haven't tried more than one teeny spoon of ice cream since. I once had a petrol station machine mocha and a small can of Pringles and oh my that made me dump AND throw up with 20 or 30 mins. That was about 4 mths after surgery, haven't done that again. Those experiences were enough to make me very cautious about sugar. Nowadays 10 mths out from surgery I have had a few reactive hypoglycaemia attacks when I ate stuff I shouldn't have. A scone with a teeny bit of jam and some nice cream gave me a hypo two hours later. As did a whole packet of cheezles I stupidly ate in one sitting. Also if I eat sweet (white or milk) chocolate I have to be very careful or I'm hypoing two hours later. Basically if I break the rules, I suffer, which is what I (well, technically the Health Service) paid €7450 for!

    Pre-op cheating??

    First and foremost you have to treat your lows being a T1! ((hugs)) I'm sure you know just how much you have to eat to bring your sugars up x amount? I have reactive hypo and wake with lows in the mid-30s to mid-40s. I now have a rescue packet beside my bed that includes: blood sugar meter glucose chewable tablets glucose gummies 6oz orange juice nut butter nuts I always follow what ever glucose I need with the nuts or nut butter once my bg starts to rise (after about 30minutes of the glucose dose). That way my spike is minimized to bringing glucose back into the 80s. I find that 1-2 wafers or 2-3 gummies will get it done. That way I minimize damage. Can you rig something like that up for the future? I wouldn't worry about what you've had to do to keep out of hypo-land. You're doing your very best and I am betting that you will be in good shape when you hit the OR. Just keep following the plan. I know it's scary dealing with all of this and I hope you see an improvement in your T1 with the surgery!!

    Any foods permanently off your safe list?

    I wasn't given a permanent 'no' list but anything with quickly absorbing sugar is a big no-no. Icrecream makes me dump so fast my head spins. Same with commercial hot-chocolate/mochas. Jams and refined carbs give me reactive hypos and I HATE them with a passion so I just avoid those permanently now. But I'm lucky I can do a bit of dark chocolate without too many problems, so that's my bit of naughtiness.

    Thanks for indulging my curiosity. To [hopefully] clarify the conversation, black are my original questions, red are your replies, purple my feedback. Just to ensure everyone is on the same page, Dumping Syndrome is typically related to consuming sugars and/or fats, as has been previously mentioned. Dumping on other foods is exceptionally unusual. How often do you dump? If it's responsible for the majority of your weight loss as you claim then you would be dumping pretty frequently. If it is actually dumping you wouldn't likely be dumping enough to impact weight loss. So I never said I was losing weight because of this. I think I lost weight just from keeping on the proper plan initially. I would say I get sick at almost every meal, regardless of the ingredients, but it's severe with anything carb or sugar-related. Sorry about my misunderstanding. I inadvertently connected two unrelated thoughts. I apologize. The fact you get sick at almost every meal would tell me you aren't generally dumping. It's not to say that you are never dumping, just that it is not generally what is going on. What actual foods cause you to dump? Pretty much everything but it's particularly horrible with carbs, sugar, and greasy/deep-fried foods. Again, "Pretty much everything" would indicate that much/most(?) of what you are experiencing is not dumping. Dumping is in response to specific foods rather than most foods. In what quantities? I don't measure anymore but it doesn't take much. A few bites will do it, or even a small square of something sugary. I understand that you don't measure, neither do I. "A few bites" does answer the question, though. A 1.5" x 1.5" square of fudge or comparable sugar dense candy can easily make me dump. How soon after you eat do your symptoms appear? Within 10-15 minutes. What are the symptoms? It feels like my heart is going to pound out of my chest, feel dizzy, head pressure, brain-fog, and overall sense of anxiety. I also get reactive-hypoglycemia...but not true hypoglycemia. My body just responds very poorly to blood sugar drops because they happen so fast, but rarely have I been in hypo numbers. These comments add I think what are the more important pieces of information. If this were dumping, you could simply reduce the sugars or fats that might be causing distress. But when it's almost everything, frequently, then it doesn't sound like just or even mostly dumping, if it's dumping at all. If you are, in fact, over consuming sugars and/or fats over frequently then your initial steps would be clear: stop doing that and see if this fixes your issue(s) in short order. If you've tried yet continue over consuming sugars and/or fats frequently and unable to stop yourself then were I in your shoes I'd get myself to a therapist post haste. [ETA: I have not gotten the impression you are out of control in this way. Quite the contrary.] This is not a diet or nutrition issue in my opinion. It's not that you're not working to eat the correct foods, it's that eating any foods too often cause physical distress. Were this me, I would have long ago become a squeaky wheel. I would be camping in my surgeon's or PCP's offices until I got a resolution, or at least significant progress, in fixing whatever is going on. I would not be put off. Bottom line: Get your medical team to work helping you. Be your own advocate. Good luck, Tek
