I could not imagine pureed meat, and I'm not a fan of pureed vegetables. I made it through this stage with refried beans, egg salad and tuna salad, which I mashed up enough to not have chunks of egg or tuna. I added flavor to those with a little tiny bit of dijon mustard or pickle juice. I ate mashed sweet potato with cinnamon and some sugar free (ok, fake) maple pancake syrup. I ate applesauce. I also tried some pureed baby food fruits. I didn't find it difficult at all to have enough things to eat. Most bariatric cookbooks include recipes for this stage, too.

@ShoppGirl Thank you for your reply I have therapy every week, but was going to start looking for more weight-related therapists in my area as I am extremely worried about coping with the emotional eating. I am sorry to hear about the struggles you have had, and I hope it all works out for you. Pureed food sounds like the worst stage! I, like you, feel that pureeing 'normal' foods probably is gross haha! Hospital bag is actually one of the things I do need to think about! I shall add those to my list, thank you -
Revision Surgery - Band to Sleeve-any tips or success stories

Good Day I am going to have my gastric band removed and the gastric sleeve done on May 17, 2024 due to complications from the band. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on recovery, foods, exercise etc for the first few days after the surgery. When I had the band installed i was on a liquid diet, then puree and finally real food. Lots of gas pains in chest and shoulders back then. Now I am on a new journey at the end of the month. Any success stories? -
I’m about 10 weeks post surgery. At what point can you drink liquids with food? With the summer being here, after I come back for a walk, I’d like to drink some water and heat up dinner. Pretty frustrating I have to wait 30-45 minutes before I can eat and it’s already a long work day.

Yes, I felt that way until I was onto the puree stage and could suffice the hunger/growling with a little bit of food with consistency. I am assuming you are still on liquid only at this point? You are used to eating food, and your stomach is looking for it, liquids pass through pretty quick, it is essentially a funnel, it comes in and out pretty quick (~5 minutes). Once you get puree foods they last a bit longer in the stomach so the growling etc will go away.

The purée stage is a struggle for lots of us. A combination of the taste, smell &/or texture which is temporarily haywire post surgery. The worst things I pureed was tuna & salmon. Shudder. I survived on runny scrambled eggs (you could mash soft poached eggs too), boiled eggs mashed with mayo, thin instant rolled oats (made in milk), yoghurt, thicker soups (pre made or make your own & puree) & a couple of times I ate baby food. Friend said she survived on chicken breast puréed with chicken gravy - it was the only meat protein she could tolerate.

Heya! I think every Dr/Surgeon must do things with a slight variation, but it is always best to follow the advice given by your own Dr/healthcare team - it is often tailored to you e.g., in terms of weight, health conditions etc. I had my dietician appointment today and we went through when I am starting the LRD, which will be for 2 weeks, and then went through the different food stages which for me are: Week 1 - Liquid Week 2 - Puree/slush Week 3 - Mush (thick/lumpy foods) Week 4 - Soft foods Week 5 - 'Normal' foods -

I'm glad it helped!! Oh yes, I forgot to mention that, moving to soft foods will help some, purees just don't have as much solidity to them. There is a huge difference between a 1/4 cup of pureed food vs 1/4 of a solid protein, even if it is a soft protein... At 8 weeks I was cleared for most foods and I think that is part of the reason why my hunger started to ease off around then. If your PPI is omeprazole it is possible it isn't working as well as you need it to, sometimes people need something like Pantoprazole or Dexilant, so if that gnawing hunger at night continues you may want to ask your doctor about it at your next appointment! ❤️ -

I ended up at the hospital. I have extreme pain but no explanation as to why. My nutritionist doesn't know why either other than I ate phase 3 in phase 2. (Cottage cheese and black beans). Yes I was in pureed stage but even with the beans and cottage cheese mushed well... My tummy didn't like it. So I'm going back to just protein shakes, jello, broth and Greek yogurt for another week. Going to try pureed food in a week again. So far, I still can't drink any water/shakes without extreme pain. Shoots through my chest and shoulder still. Still unsure from anyone as to why unfortunately -
Good morning everyone 🌞 My QOTD today is did anyone develop any food aversions after surgery? Any foods you used to like that now you can't stand? Seafood is already off limits for me so I'm hoping chicken or beef don't become one for me!

Week 3 Puree diet sucks. I may need to seek counseling as I didn't realize my relationship with food, or lack thereof, is this out of control. Maybe it's not a food addiction? Maybe I don't try hard enough? I lack control and I know it will affect me long-term. I convince myself that I'm trying, but am I really? I'm supposed to be eating/drinking plenty of protein. 64oz of fluids per day, but I'm not. I have absolutely NO motivation to get out of bed or the control to not snack on foods I'm not even ready to properly digest. I keep telling myself I'm chewing enough so it's "basically pureed" before I swallow. I could literally be furthest from the truth. Wth is wrong with me? I did SO good for my pre-op diet. I was very militant, even drank more fluids than I was supposed to. I also lost more weight than my doctor asked me to. What happened? I'm hungry, what seems like, all the time. I was warned I may not like sweet things and even salty foods could throw me off. If anything, I'm craving those two like never before. I've been cheating with food already...drinking around 35oz of fluids per day, on a good day. I'm so tired all day all the time. End rant... I hope I'm not the only one here who is suffering from stagnancy and lack of control. I will become stronger. I have faith in myself. It's just right now I'm at a loss.

THANK YOU! So much for your kind response. This is indeed work and I intend to stick to the plan...it's been easy up until last week when I was able to start in on pureed foods. I took that as a challenge to see what I can thoroughly chew before swallowing. And I've paid the price by doing so...Easter was really hard. I'm trying my best to get my proteins in, but more than that too. Didn't really realize sodium plays a negative roll as well. I decided on surgery before gaining more weight. I was almost not qualified due to not weighing enough but my doctors worked with me. I have had a real bad relationship with food for so long. And with the pre-op diet going so well and the first 2 weeks of liquids i thought for sure I'd be golden by the time I hit pureed foods. But now I feel as if I've just set myself back. I have to really digest this new lifestyle change. Thanks for responding it really means a lot.

Surgery was 8/14/23. Been on pureed diet per instructions since 8/20. Followed the diet completely however starting last week I'm constantly feeling sick to my stomach making it hard to eat. Some days I can't eat at all where other days I may only get 2 tiny feedings in. I can't stomach plain water anymore either when I used to only drink water aside from my one cup of coffee a day before surgery. If I can't eat my 5-6 feedings a day, 3 meals 2-3 snacks) I won't lose weight but the thought of food is yuck. Anyone else have this issue and able to resolve it?

Thanks for the tuna fish Idea! Today is my 2nd day on pureed food and I tried it. I'm tolerating it quite well and it's tasty. I tried scrambled egg yesterday and my stomach let me know it wasn't happy! Maybe it was too dry or too chunky or something, because eggs are pretty bland, and I thought it would be a good starter food, but no.

Hi everyone, there's so much conflicting information on the amount to be eating per meal. I am 5 years post op and I believe was severely under eating for a long time. Is 220 gm per meal / 8oz too much food to be eating, as in 1 cup? Some people say one cup is 128gm and I am just lost. -
Hi I’m 3 yrs out from my surgery..just wondering if anyone is having an issue with what I call food coma right after a meal.. It seems like no matter what I eat it could be the most healthy thing and right after I eat I crash real hard and get very sleepy..even sometimes after my premier protein drinks..I even drink the espresso ones with caffeine and make smoothies with fruits and veggies and still crash after any advice appreciated..

surgeons do vary. At my clinic, both sleeve and bypass people were on the same plan. They had us on purees as soon as we left the hospital, but they changed that (I had my surgery nine years ago) and now they have to do a week (or maybe two?) of liquids before moving to purees. -
Y'all, I know I cannot be the only one who is having severe food aversions. To stuff that I typically like! I'm 9 weeks post VSG. I brought some good turkey lunch meat, and some edamame with me for lunch. It got lunch time an I didn't really want it, but decided to eat is, as I didn't need to go out and try to hunt something down to eat. So I put a little chive cream cheese on my turkey and make a roll up and steamed my edamame (in the pods). I ate some turkey and a few edamame, and instantly started to gag. Anyone else? Or am I just a weirdo?

I must be in the minority - I didn't mind the puree stage at all - especially after a few weeks (before and after surgery) of just drinking fluids! It was great to eat real food - even if it was pureed. I remember eating a lot of Greek yogurt, hummus, refried beans - I also pureed spanakopita (which I made without the phyllo) a couple of times, as I recall (I must have added something to get it going in the blender - some milk, maybe? Can't remember). I had surgery at age 55 (that was nine years ago) but fortunately, unlike summerseeker, I didn't deal with any hormone issues. I did have off and on "buyer's remorse" the first two or three weeks, though ("what in the hell did I just do?" "Why could have I tried dieting one last time?"). All that will pass and you'll be so glad you did it. p.s. I used my blender a lot during the puree stage. I already had a standard-sized one, but I ordered one that had both a standard-sized pitcher and a small pitcher, since I figured I'd use the small one a lot more (and I did). I think it's a lot easier nowadays to find small blenders. But like someone else said, you can always order one afterward, too. -
how can i incorporate more fruit and vegetables?

Also, adding grated or pureed veg to sauces or soups. For example, you can add grated carrots and zucchini to marinara and it pretty much disappears. -

Surgery twin! I found a lot of soft/pureed recipes on Pinterest and TikTok. My surgeon had me on a clear liquid diet post op for 3 days and then I was able to start soft/pureed. Soups and jello were my go to initially. You got this! I’d say to wait a few minutes after your first bite to see how you handle it -

I know I post the same thing all the time but I was never given ANY goals - protein, fluids, nothing! It was totally reach your stages by texture. Eat as much as you can of: clear liquids; thick/full liquids; puree; soft foods; proper endgame food. That was it! I've done fine but that was with the help of everyone here. Think my surgeon's 'hands off' approach is probably fine for some people but not others. -

I didn't have any issues drinking either. When I passed the puree stage and entered solid stage, that is when the restriction got real. lol

It was divine, yes! And I honestly didn't believe for a moment that 2 tablespoons of food would suffice, but it sure did. It was oatmeal made with protein. For lunch I served myself a four ounce serving of cottage cheese, and managed to eat 2 ounces before I was full. And dinner was broccoli and a chicken meatball pureed in broth, also a 4 ounce serving, of which I could only eat half. Everything tasted so good though. So, so, darn, good.
