DO NOT do any diet that you aren't willing to follow the rest of your life. and keto is possibly the most unsustainable diet there is. you are about to get bariatric surgery. the surgery works. just eat a generally healthy, whole-food diet. give up sugar entirely, carbs mostly, and eat normal amounts of healthy fats. or as author Michael Pollen so succinctly put it: "eat FOOD. not too much. mostly plants." or what i came up with: "if it grows in the ground or falls from a tree, grazes on grass or swims in the sea." this surgery is your "do-over" opportunity to live a somewhat normal life. you don't need to do an extreme diet like keto. the OP is in a different boat, having regained. and honestly it's not a long-term strategy for him/her either.

Glad to read this from you olgark! I will be sleeved in 2 days & was wondering if I can do the Keto diet afterwards? How do you feel about Ketogenics? Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Hello Everyone, I had my surgery 11 years ago and lost 100 pounds. I've gained about 40 pounds and was able to lose 10 last month doing Paleo/Keto diet. The weight lost just stop so now I'm deciding to go back to basic and just do " The pouch reset" has anyone done that. Did it work??? Thanks in advance.
  4. we are all familiar with prepared meal delivery services like Blue Apron, Plated, Peached Dish, etc. but this one seems to take the cake in terms of optimally healthy, whole-food, paleo/keto food. it's called Factor 75. https://www.factor75.com/nutrition anyone try this yet? i know all of these services are pretty expensive, but for us bariatric patients with smaller eating capacities, i bet one meal could serve as two (lunch and dinner). the meals seem to be about 400-500 calories each and have the ideal macronutrient ratio. everything is grass-fed, local, organic. seems like the perfect solution for single (or married) folk who haven't the time to shop or the skill to cook.

    Low carb Vs. Calorie counting?

We seem to have 3 vocal camps running around. Low carb keto. Low carb non keto. Vegetarian. Everyone counts calories.

    Breath...

If you have thrush it'll get better when that clears up. But I bet you are spot on with keto. Increase your carbs above 50g/day, and that will knock you out of ketosis. (I did it by drinking lots of milk when I got to full liquids).
  7. I'm very sensitive to smells especially mouth odors... and now I'm on the offending end 🤢 I've worked in oral surgery for 28 some years and I can smell rotting enamel and perio.. Since surgery I have yuck mouth and I cannot make it go away. Granted, water intake isn't up to what I used to consume and my diet has been almost keto like... this morning my breath was so bad it made me nauseous..🤢 10 days post op sleeping 1/2 way seated upright.. I don't want to have that breath.. smells like I'm pooping out of my mouth...🤢🤢🤢🤢 Any suggestions? Will it go away soon? Lapband placed: 8/2011 Lapband removed: 3/2017 VSG: 8/2/2017

    Is this ketosis?

It sounds to me like you are describing dehydration., although I get this really rank metallic taste in my mouth-like sucking on pennies-when I am in ketosis. You can always buy keto sticks and test your urine if you want to know if you are in ketosis or not. You can get them at most pharmacies behind the counter without a prescription, just ask.

    Vegetarian & Bypass

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years and a part-time vegan for about 2 years. I highly recommend Dr Garth Davis' new book called Protein-aholic. He's also on FB and actually responded to a question I asked. He's a bariatric surgeon who recommends vegan. I will still do dairy for a while, but once I can eat real food I will phase it out slowly. I've noticed a lot of people on here are keto, basically Atkins. It's expensive, and not easy to maintain long term. I've read numerous peer-reviewed studies and meta-studies that say we're eating way too much protein. I'm nowhere near any kind of expertise on diet and nutrition, but I know how I feel when I eat mostly plant-based vs. a heavy animal protein diet. And I flat out refuse to believe that fruits are bad for us. Juice is debatable. But I will never cut out whole fruit and starchy veggies like potatoes. Just my 2 cents.
  10. unless someone is willing to eat "keto" (i.e. 80% fat) the rest of their lives, going on keto for any amount of time is an incredibly stupid and self-defeating idea.
  11. Low carb, high fat Though I do focus more on protein so I'm not sure if it's true-keto. The big thing for me was watching carbs.
  12. There is no need to go "keto" or "low carb" after WLS even though many users on this board are eating this way. You need to figure out what works for you. You might want to check out the vegetarian threads on this board.

Is Post sleeve diet similar to Keto diet?

Hi all!!! Im due to be sleeved on 8-21-17. Im excited and a lil nervous but am anticipating the out come. I just wanted to share some information per the Keto Lifestyle. I practiced the Keto lifestyle and it worked very well. My challenge was getting into ketosis, (keto flu) and staying there to become fully fat adapted. By the time I got to that point I began having issues with heel spurs and from the pain and stress, was knocked out Ketosis. But it really works if your disciplined. I definitely am continuing the Ketogenic lifestyle along with (IF) again full blown after surgery when im fully healed since I will already have began 2 weeks pre-op. I think it's great for those who hit plateaus in losing. Below is a link I believe will give you more insight. Good luck with your journey! https://kickincarbclutter.blogspot.com/2017/06/getting-into-ketosis-after-bariatric-surgery.html?m=1 mybariatricjourney mybariatricjourney
  15. There are vegan options for shakes, but I haven't tried them. I found this list on google, from PETA https://www.peta.org/living/food/pump-workouts-vegan-protein-powder/ It looks like it could be helpful. I think your biggest challenge if vegan is the immediate post op stage where most people rely on shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt, jello, etc to get through the healing part, so you may have to be just vegetarian and allow the dairy in your diet to make it through. Once you're over that, you should be able to choose a diet you want with more veggies as your food source, but use tofu and non-dairy protein shakes to meet your protein goals. Most post op people are on a keto diet because, well, it works! And aside from the high fat intake (which isn't necessary for post-op bariatric patients because it's function is to aid in satiety in non-surgical folks, and is a LIMIT, not a GOAL), the protein and carb requirements are in line with what we need anyway. So it helps to follow keto in the sense that the keto community offers great meal ideas that keep the carbs in check and don't use added sugars.
  16. I'm in the uk. And our plan isn't keto. Just balanced. I've been told not to follow keto or low carb from my nut. I do love keto alternatives.
  17. I've noticed on YouTube and IG that so many RNYers are eating keto. I've been a vegetarian and part-time vegan for 18 years (actually started that after trying Atkins diet!) There's got to be people out there meeting both their nutrition and weight loss goals by eating vegetarian or vegan. Help, I need your feedback!

Is Post sleeve diet similar to Keto diet?

My intention to is to serve whole healthy foods that I can have a bit of. I have to feed 5-7 people a night in my house. How our post op eating compares to keto is avoiding most carbs (except veggies). However, keto "diets" ask for high fat. High protein with some good fats is what we need. Since our tummies are small, we need to focus on our protein first, to survive. Im hoping that when school starts I can eat meat. That will help.
  19. I completely understand what you are saying. I think most of us are afraid of gaining back the weight. I would probly just let go of a few of the lads are size items and keep the others. On another note, I am stuck for over 5 weeks at the same weight i am afraid I will not reach goal. Can you give me any pointers on how you finally broke through? What is that keto thing you did? Thank you for any help you can give me
  20. Please help! I'm a collector not a hoarder. For decades I've curated a gorgeous wardrobe of flattering elegant clothing at every size for my body from 2 to 14. Now 2 years post surgery I'm a 2 yet again and after a LIFE of yo-yo-ing I'm terrified of donating it all in case it's harder to maintain than I think. Whether my weight was going up or down one good thing was I always had lovely things to wear that fit my shape and I didn't have to spend the time or money on a wardrobe because I wear classic pieces that I buy on sale. Of course I always wanted to stay smaller but as we all know that's not always in our control. It drives me crazy when people say oh give your clothes away so that you can't go back to being fat as if we got fat logically instead of emotionally. So if the surgery is indeed for life and I'm not going to gain a bunch of weight then I am completely on board for donating all of it if I'll never wear it again but I will be furious if three years later as has happened throughout my life i'm chubby again for whatever reason and have to go buy fat clothes again. I don't have the money for that. With surgery I went from 215 to 160 but it took going "keto" (high fat low carb diet) to get to 135 where I am now. (having done the hCG diet multiple times in my life and lost lots of weight I am understandably very nervous about gaining again.) so what do you think the odds are keeping this weight off for life? Thank you for understanding this emotional time for me! (I just moved and can either store or donate as I don't have lots of room. Storing in a "pod" is way cheaper than replacing in a few years. Thank you for your wise encouragement.
  21. Most definitely contact your nutritionist. Everyone's diet plan seems to be so different. Dieting is hopefully behind you. You now need to eat as healthy as you can. Think of an eating plan you can sustain. I know there are a lot of people that are into the Keto plan. Not me. I eat very little of breads and rice. I haven't had any pasta (6 month post-op). For me there is no nutritional value from them and they take up valuable space in my new tummy. My nutritionist doesn't want me to worry about carbs and fat. She wants me to focus on my protein. Good luck on your journey
  22. I am going to talk to my nutritionist because it seems a lot of people are doing keto postop, my only concern is the fat intake and whether it can be tolerated postop. There are so many keto books and recipes on amazon for kindle free.
  23. Hi! As school is getting ready to vamp up, I am trying to prepare for the year. My family is extremely picky and I know I need to start now making changes in their diet so they can support me. I am only 10 days post op but I was looking to build my meal planning box. Was curious if those that are further out see any similarities between keto diets and the eating requirements post sleeve. Do you have a favorite website for recipe ideas? It would be great if I could cook once and eat a small portion and my family could have normal portions. Thanks for your help.

Anyone in the North Bay/Sonoma County?

Hi Zally, hope you're good! You lost 8 pounds!!! Awesome, how'd you do that? I'm on a Keto diet so no carbs and Im doing it as 'directed' but it doesn't feel like im losing anything how are you losing...?
  25. My 17 year old daughter also has IIH. She notices her symotoms subside when she loses a few pounds, and come back when she gains. She is 5'5 and around 195lbs. She hasn't had surgery. I'd recommend talking with your surgeon about going on a ketogenic diet while waiting for the surgery. As long as you are losing weight you are headed in the right direction to save your vision. A keto diet will have you eating about 60g of protein and 20g of net carbs a day. Plenty of fat. Lots of meat and green veggies. You can start this TODAY as long as you aren't diabetic or have other health issues (like problems with low blood sugar or the like). With your vision on the line, I'm sure you are willing to do whatever it takes. Liquid diets also knock the pounds off quickly too. And don't worry about messing up your metabolism before surgery. Surgery will reset everything. Good luck!
