I'm in love with chocolate Ultimate Muscle Protein. It tastes like cake mix to me. Sometimes I add PB2 to make a chocolate peanut butter shake. My next experiment is adding chi tea flavoring to vanilla to see if I can make vanilla chi protein shake.

Pre Op Diet Suggestions
NJ mom of 4 replied to ElliottWasHere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, from what I understand every Dr is different or at least they differ slightly in what they are allowing their patients to eat. My dr allows 3-4 protein shakes and one small meal every night except for 24 hours prior to surgery. Some Drs aren't allowing that or just veggies and such. It is probably best to check with your Dr as to what he's allowing on his PreOp diet requirements!!! I started my diet yesterday... So we around the same time surgery wise!!! Good luck!!! -
New Here, And Question About Insurance Req Diet
woo woo replied to nikmenow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I think that insurances differ on this issue. I was told (by my NUT) to not drop any weight at all during preop diet phase and also not to gain (I am right at 35 with co-morbids). I think the best thing to do would be to call the surgeon's office that you are wanting to use and speak with the insurance coordinator. She will be able to give you the most relevant advice probably. There is also the option of calling your insurance directly but I have heard that sometimes the information can be unreliable from call to call. Good luck to you! -
Talking about food....
JustJenn replied to kellbell5's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 months post op (today) and I think about all day everyday. I have to think about what I'm going to eat how I'm going to cook it and how much protein is in it?! I wish I could turn my internal dialog off when it comes to food but its all about choices if I don't over think it ill probably end up messing up and diving in for empty worthless food that just looks and taste good but not putting me any closer to my goal. Your relationship with food is going to keep changing. .::SurgeryDate 7/25/12::. -
So, my doctor, Dr Snow in Hurst, Tx, put me on a 5 day diet before my surgery on Friday. Today is day 3 and I have the WORST headache! I can't get rid of it. . . I even tried a Starbucks singles packet (with a scoop of vanilla Unjury protein powder, of course) this morning! My pre-op instructions say to avoid aspirin or anything that will thin my blood this week! Any suggestions? I'm dying here. . .all I want to do is close my curtains and lay in my bed ALL DAY; but I have things to get in order (family meals, last minute house work, etc.) before the big day!

Have Anyone Taken Any Control Your Appetite Pills Will Doing The Liquid Diet?
sars replied to iris26's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would not do that. When is your surgery? The phentermine could affect your heart & EKG results. Sounds like your sx is just a few weeks away, if you are fighting hunger cravings, call the Nut & see what they suggest. Mine basically said we could have as much Protein and veggies as we want. -

How much did you lose pre-op liquid diet?
Lorelei replied to Lorelei's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also... What is the highest protein, least calorie thing you can consume? I've heard some of you mention powders that contain 30mg of protein per tablespoon, but did not learn the name of these products. Is there something I can get at GNC which will be high in protein, low in calories, (not have any stimulant properties) which I can consume to be sure I am getting enough nutrients if I'm only having broth and things like that? Thanks agian, Lorelei -
I lost 50 lbs peo-op but on a low carb/ high protein diet. No pills. Good Luck!

Met my surgeon this morning and followed it up with a day of pre-op work, blood, EKG & x-rays. I was there ALL day. Tomorrow is cardio clearance and Dietician meeting. Getting so close... Got my liver shrink info to, it doesn't seem to bad: Protein drinks breakfast and lunch, 3 snacks (small fruit) and 3oz of lean meat with veggies and a carb. It all begins February 25th.

Every insurance company has different requirements. I have an out of state BCBS (illinios) and my employer is Catholic Health Initiatives and they have a program called carewise. Through them I had to have six months of phone nutrition calls with a documented end weight from primary doctor at end of six months. I also had a RN case manager. Basically, we talked about any diagnosis I had, concerns, changes I needed to make to prepare for surgery. I lost maybe 10 pounds then regained bc I hurt my back and was literally in bed for a time. So in the end I weighed 3 pounds less then when I started. They were fine with that. I struggled with years being insulin dependent and very metabolically resistant even when I ate low carb. I also had to have a psych review, primary doctor review. The entire process went fast even though initially I thought six months would take forever. I am glad it took that long gave me plenty of time to weigh my options and do lots of research on complications and lifestyle changes. I started the process May of 2012 and had surgery Jan 24 2013. I can say trying to eat smaller portions, with baby spoons and all that is tough prior to surgery and for the most part I didnt do it just knew I would have changes to be made after surgery. I have had no issues since surgery. Good Luck

Need Advice for pre-opt nutrition
BaileyRose replied to stupiedshannon99's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on less than 20 carbs a day, and atleast65-75 grams of Protein a day. For dinner I I don't make me something separate. I just make low carb for my husband too and if he wants a piece of bread with it or something that's fine. Or for instance, the other night we had friends over for dinner... I made fajitas and I bought the low carb tortillas( not the ones that taste like cat food but the white ones made by Mission)z each small tortilla is 5 carbs. So I had two. I knew ahead of time that's what we were having so I made sure to have no carbs early on in the day. I suggest a high Protein shake for lunch. That will definitely help with getting your protein in and help with your lunch temptations. Also, in the morning, I get a route 44 Water with lemon and lime from sonic and sip on that. I fill it up a couple more times a day and then I'm good! You can do it! The first three days of sticking too it were the hardest for me. I felt so deprived. But if you just put your mind to it you can do it! I've lost 10 lbs in 10 days. -
Meeting with the Surgeon in 11 Days!
ShrinkyDinkMe22 replied to nazerina77's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would definitely do a search in the search option and look for "questions to ask surgeon". Something to that effect. I bet a whole bunch of posts will pop up for you. -
Need Advice for pre-opt nutrition
Mscarter007 replied to stupiedshannon99's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with Jame's mom. My nut put me on no more than 60g of carbs and at least 60g of protein. Watch out for starches, fruits, and vegetables because they all contain carbs. At first it sounds funky but I am told it can be reintroduced in moderation well down the post op line. -
StartingProtein Shakes Before you need to...
beckyrlnd replied to SDTeaGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
during my preop stage. i upped my protein but i added the supplement to my food broth or clear soups. I did not drink the shake, to thick and sweet for me. I did this to help promote faster healing. i was on a clear liquid preop for 5-6 days prior to surgery. So the added protein mixed with my broth satisified more than just regular broth. Now when surgery came around i began putting protein in everything i drank to help the speed up healing and satisify my hunger again during my two week post op liquid phase. I still supplement my eating with a protein milk (FF milk, protein powder, sweetner and vanilla). I drink this first thing in the morning. This boosts my protein and allows me to eat good portions of protein on my own. If I calculate from journalling i still have not had enough protein i will have another protein milk in the evening. Definitely speak with your nutritionist about adding protein. I supplement with protein powder but still do not rely on it as my main source of protein. You have to begin searching for protein rich foods, meat, spinach, legumes, some like tofu. Congratulation on your upcoming Journey! it is one i will be eternally greatful that i did! Changed my life. Good Luck and God Bless! -
StartingProtein Shakes Before you need to...
reverie replied to SDTeaGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What's your purpose for drinking Protein shakes? Just because? Do you have plans to exercise pretty hard/weight lift? If not I don't see the real point. The purpose of Protein Shakes is truly convenience; people drink them when there isn't time for a meal. Why drink protein when you can eat a 4oz chicken breast and feel satieated for much longer? Protein won't make you lose weight. After/before surgery we're usually pushed to drink them so that we lose fat, not pre-existing muscle mass. Just my $.02. I see no purpose unless you're looking to workout hard or if you're on the go and need a meal. -
2/11/13---My Sleeve date
Gin1120 replied to Gin1120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have a pre-op diet..I asked my doctor and he said I should be starting to drink a protein shake and cutting down on the food I eat, but nothing specific. -
I had a gastroplasty back in 2001. I have since regained all the weight, plus more, that I lost. It was a dismal failure but that was the only option back then. Is there anyone here that has had a previous surgery and then a sleeve? I guess I'm wondering if its even possible to have this surgery with the previous one in there.

Need suggestions
Orchids&Dragons replied to Kimbero's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're missing "meals", try something savory. You can eat pretty much any soup out there if you strain out the chunks. (I'm assuming you're on full liquids because of the milk.) After the soup is heated, you can stir in some unflavored protein powder to increase the protein. Soup counts toward your fluid goal. There are a lot of good choices now in the grocery store. It doesn't need to be "chicken & stars"! But don't add the protein powder before you heat the soup! It can get all clumpy. UGH! I couldn't handle the "sweet" overload. Good luck! -

We really like to Unjury Chocolate Splender. Yum! There are other flavors too. My husband boosts the chocolate flavor with Chocolate syrup which I find to be too much. Tastes great and got us through the pre-surgery diet and is now supplemental when we are short on protein.
