    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Im 3 week post op and im not loosing weight anymore 😩 . I did loose 40 pounds before surgery 😐… anyone else??
  2. It's also possible to have loose skin and just accept it. You probably won't be able to tell with your clothes on that you have loose skin. I have a lot of loose skin on my thighs but you can't see it at all when I'm wearing pants. I still have more weight to loose, but I really don't think I'll do skin surgery.

    Determining Goal Weight

Neither my surgeon nor my PCP ever mentioned BMI when working with me to set a goal weight. I will never be a "healthy" BMI because that, for me, would be 184 lbs. and I have almost 200 lbs. of lean body mass. So I picked a number based on body fat. For a man, below 25% is average, below 20% is good, and 15% is fit (as in flat stomach, at least for people who don't have a ton of excess skin). So I took my pre-surgery muscle mass, subtracted 10% since I knew I'd lose muscle mass as I lost fat, then added back in 20% body fat, and came up with my goal. Every three months I get a DXA scan because as I work out and lift weights, my muscle IS coming back, so I adjust my goal. Next scan is in March.
  4. Another thing to note is you will “notice” more muscle definition the less overlaying tissue you have covering it (i.e., fat and skin). Prior to my arm lift, I needed to flex to see see any muscles. After the arm lift, they could be clearly “noticed” with my arm just hanging by my side (full disclosure: my muscles are in hiding again these days due to pandemic laziness, lol) But of course, just because you can’t see or notice them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there! Best way to determine lean muscle mass gain is to get scanned. Good Luck! ❤️
  5. My friend, after losing weight, also suffered from the problem of sagging skin. And unfortunately, the doctors assured that it would not be possible to get rid of a problem of such magnitude on their own. The loss of 60 kg did not go unnoticed for her: sagging skin all over her body, massive legs, and drooping breasts. Even though my friend has already done 360 surgery (surgery to remove excess skin in the torso and back area), she still has something to work on… She tells me that great things take time, and she will be pleased when all her surgeries are over. So far, he's not just taking care of his skin. By what means she does it, I do not know, but you can find more info about it in various sources.
  6. Has anyone suffered from such a problem with sagging skin ?

Whatever you decide to do for pregnancy prevention do something highly effective like IUD. You are much more fertile after surgery and it's not good to get pregnant right after surgery because you will not be taking in many calories. Like @Queen ApisM said, maybe they can figure out what you were exactly allergic to so you know what else to try. I am down 95 lbs and I already have loose skin in my thighs and my breasts are totally flat, but you can't see it with my clothes on. Don't panic. I don't plan to have skin surgery unless I am physically uncomfortable because I have heard the recovery is really unpleasant. Most people who have this surgery will have fatty liver. Just be sure to follow the pre-surgery diet closely - the purpose of that is to shrink the liver so it's easier to do the surgery.

I have a lot to lose, and if I am successful, there definitely will be lots of extra skin. I'm already planning for plastic surgery as long as I am deemed healthy enough for it. Since it will be expensive, I've already started saving money. If I wind up being miraculously lucky on the skin front, then I'll repurpose the money elsewhere. 🙂 For birth control, I can't help there as I take the mini-pill (no estrogen). I wonder, can they narrow down what your allergic reaction was caused by? There are many different types of oral contraception so not all formulations should have the same effect. I'd also note that many non-pill formulations also have hormones in them (most IUDs, implants) so knowing what specifically caused the allergic reaction would be good to know as you look at those options as well.

I lost 100% of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. And yes - I had a lot of excess skin. Plastic surgery is the only thing that could helped with it, so I went with that. I had a lower body lift, arm lift, face lift, and breast lift. I didn't want a breast augmentation - I was "well-endowed" most of my life, and I was tired of it. I wanted to be a B or C cup, which I am now. I was already post-menopause when I had surgery, so birth control wasn't an issue for me.

Well done that's fantastic I'm 5 months out and haven't been weighed since November I was 45lb out then not sure wont have scales in the house so waiting to see Dietician or doctor which ever comes first I know I've lost more because all my clothes are to big lol oh well I'll have to buy some new ones good luck with the skin removal let us know how it goes
  11. Had a few of these recently and it's nice to remember it's happening: Showered at the gym (open stalls) - that was a bit of a process because I look pretty buff with my gym clothes on (arms and legs muscular and no loose skin, decent chest definition that's noticeable in a t-shirt), but my torso and the place I sit on look melted without clothes. But I did it. And nobody looked. Freedom. Got hit on by two girls in IKEA. In fact, I had to ask them if I could help them with something as they were staring uncomfortably long, and I've gotten pretty aware of that, having been fat for a long time. They giggled and one said 'oh we just thought you were cute hee-hee'. Oh. Oooh. I am honestly still reminded whenever two things happen: I need to tie my shoelaces or I need to sit on some flimsy chair. What a relief it is to simply ... bend down and tie those damn shoes! And if a chair breaks (thankfully, it never really happened), it's not my fault anymore. I have a 10-hour flight coming up and I've been lucky to get a business seat. Can't wait to feel how nice the extra space is, compared to before when it was absolutely necessary to pay 6x for a seat in the front to fit me.

Wow! Your everything sure has a lot of stuff in it! JK those are all legitimate questions & things we all worry about pre-op. Some things to take into consideration is your starting weight & your age. The more you have to loose, the more excess skin you will have. If you are older, it might be harder for you to tone things up. The main thing is finding an exercise thing you can stick with! For me that has been Pilates. But even after doing Pilates 369 times I still have bat wings. I have always had a “poofy” stomach no matter how much I weigh, even at 100 pounds in my early 20’s. I would love to have a tummy tuck, but someone would have to die for that to happen so I will go without one. My daughter has that implant thing in her arm. She had a bypass just over 3 years ago (when she was 22) & has lost over 150. She has done great. I had a bypass to correct a failed surgery I had 12 years prior to control GERD that had failed. Because of this I have to take a Previcid for the rest of my life. As long as I don’t over eat (more then 3oz) & I don’t have spicy food the GERD stays under control. Today we ate lunch at a new place. But my husband & I both got heartburn! So we won’t be eating there again!

Hello, I was just wondering something. Anyone with PCOS, GERD, FATTY LIVER all or some of these conditions, what is the most weight that you guys have lost with the gastric bypass? And for anyone who's had the bypass how did you guys prevent excess skin and, did you guys require surgery to fix the excess skin on your body such as: A BBL, TUMMY TUCK, BREAST AUGUMATAION? Hopefully, my surgery date will be in April/May because I have to get an endoscopy and I'm super excited but nervous at the same time about my surgery. And my main concern is I had an allergic reaction to my birth control in 2019 so I was just wondering what type of conceperative do guys use to prevent pregnancy without birth control do you guys use the depicote, IUD?

Hey to all my U.K. friends! So I’m 6 months post op and 2lbs from my personal target weight! Which I’m so happy about. Starting weight 15stone current weight 9stone 9 However I have some of that pesky flappy hanging skin on my lower tummy. Not as much as I expected which is good. I’ve managed to tone my top half of my belly giving it some definition. I also have two flaps of skin that once housed my breasts 😣 how soon after a sleeve has anyone else had a tummy tuck or breast uplift and who with? im doing some quotes at the moment to see if it’s viable as I feel ready is there any feedback from anyone in this situation? thanks
  15. Great to hear! keep up the good work. I have worked with a trainer in the past but prefer to just do the workouts on my own. You will learn the exercises and how to mix it up on your own. I go to Planet Fitness- only $10/month and personal training is free if you want it. I have been consistently weightlifting at least 5 days per week since late Summer/Fall of 2021 after fully recovering from gall bladder removal and I think it has made a great difference in how my clothes fit, how my arms/legs/stomach skin looks and how I feel overall.
  16. According to my surgeon, I was allowed to eat fruits from the beginning but avoid the skins till month 3 or when easily tolerated. The first couple of months, I ate green apple sauce and smoothies with blended fruit. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

I've Started Doing Workouts with a Personal Trainer

I used a personal trainer at a gym 10 years ago, the last time I got close to the weight I am now. Of course, that was before I had surgery. I don't remember for sure, but a probably did 2 or 3 dozen sessions. It definitely made me feel better. I've been thinking about doing it again. As I near the supposedly ideal BMI of 25, I notice that my legs and especially my arms are looking pretty scrawny. I also have some wrinkly skin on my arms and legs that could really benefit from adding back some muscle mass. (Of course, at 68, I'm a certified Old Guy, so maybe the wrinkles are par for the course, but they weren't there when I was bulked up with fat. ) And though I look good in clothes, I still have a couple fat places that could really look a lot better when I'm standing shirtless in front of the mirror to shave. What I've been wondering is whether I need to find somebody who has experience with bariatric surgery patients, and if so, how to find such a person whom I could afford.
  18. My mom is in assisted living but mentally she is great I stopped in to bring her some adult diapers the other day and I walked in her room - I had sunglasses on - she said Hi and I said Hi! She said can I help you with something? I lifted the box of diapers and showed them to her. She said Oh! Did my daughter drop those off for me? I said what?! She said why didn’t she come see me? She just dropped them off with you? I took off my glasses and said mom it’s me! OMG she said I didn’t recognize you! Well open the blind honey I want to see you in the light! I’m only 5 weeks out but back into a size 14 jeans and lost 32 pounds. It really made my day. I’ve seen her once right out of surgery but didn’t feel well enough to stay long. I felt like I wasn’t loosing really so it meant a lot to me for her to not recognize me at first it made me realize I am progressing
  19. Nothing too fancy yet, but finally my favorite winter PJ fit loose on me when I avoided wearing them for few years for fitting too snug on me. 🥰

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

Okay so yesterday I felt like I woke up hungry and nothing I was doing was fixing this. So I called my nurse for my program. Turns out since I’m younger- 27 my swelling and healing is going faster than normal and I’m not getting enough calories on clear liquids. Due to this she has recommended me to start drinking protein shakes a day early. I did my first one watered down just to be safe. This morning I have a mixture of a shake and fairlife milk just so I’m getting the most protein I can. It’s going really well so far. I still start my day with a bottle of water so I can take my meds without something thick. Also out of curiosity I weighed my self again- it seems like I’m loosing just under 3 pounds a day! I hope this progress keeps up. I can’t wait until I can get into the gym. 3 more weeks until that can happen. I debated taking a walk but it’s so cold here and slippery I’d be afraid of hurting my self. So I settle with walking my house as much as possible- something my dog is entirely entertained by. :) Last night I didn’t wake up to take my dose of Tylenol and I could definitely tell in the morning. All of my pain is focused around the larger incision to the point where I was starting to get nauseous. I sat in my bathroom on some cold tile- sipped some water until I felt confident I could take the Tylenol. Thank heavens it worked. So far I haven’t thrown up since the procedure- I’ve been reading others stories about how they have been and I couldn’t imagine the pain that would cause. I’m being very cautious- when I first tried my protein drink with water I took a tiny sip and just waited about 15 minutes before trying another sip. Thank you for taking this journey with me. It’s honestly really helpful writing it here and sharing it with people who understand. 💙

    October surgery friends??

Checking in! Howdy! This month has been alright. Met with my PCP the day after my 3 month follow up with my surgeon. Everyone is pleased with my progress and I'm on the right track. My menu has been opened up to "normal" foods for the last month, but I've yet to come across foods that don't agree with me (just have to have food or a shake before vitamins or else ugh). I've definitely lost more than I've ever lost on any previous weight loss program (max was always 35lbs) and every day I'm amazed at how I've adapted to making this a true lifestyle change. With prior programs, there was always that moment I could just get off track and stay there. With this, I am linked to my surgeon's office through Baritastic (so they have access to my food logs) which adds an extra layer of accountability. I'm also self-pay, so I have a lot of skin in the game riding on this. I'm on a pretty regimented schedule for intake because I can only do 4-6oz of stuff at a time and that stuff is usually something that is going to help me meet my daily goals. As I get closer to 250, which is about my lowest weight as an adult, I can't help but be a little nervous... like "What if I get stuck there and can't push past it?" Ridiculous thoughts, but still acknowledging they're there. I've found my area's support groups to be a major help. It really helps with getting my headspace in check and thinking about things from different perspectives. I've also seen performance increases in my gym. I've been regularly working out (5-6 days a week) since being cleared for it and at Orangetheory this past month for both benchmarks, I PR'd. On the 200m row, I went from 40.65 seconds to 40.1 seconds. On the 1 mile benchmark (3 miles on strider for me), I went from 7:39 to 7:14 shaving a total of 25 seconds off my time. Things feel easier in a smaller body than I had before. Anyway, that's a long post, but this is the month where I'm finally feeling that "It's finally happening," feeling.
  22. How far out are you? I used to in my 20s body build I have arthritis pretty bad now all over. I have done the body for life before - it is workout with a good plan that is pretty much what we are to eat post op anyway. 6 small meals a day with high protein low carb and low fat. I still have my original book from the early 1990s that I’ve pulled out dusted off and have been reading again lol that was seriously my Bible back then. I have a torn shoulder that needs surgery but I am going to try to work the muscles around it to see if it will support it - I may just end up giving myself a migraine for a week idk but I am going to try. My arthritis has improved greatly since loosing the 30 pounds and eating so much better and cleaner now. Good luck and thanks for your update!!!
  23. From what I have read here regarding this and what my Dr said - no I do not smoke or vape but I have a medical marijuana card for my arthritis - he said that it slows healing and just isn’t healthy. He didn’t touch on my medical card he said that is between me and my pain management Dr. My Pain management Dr said that marijuana will help promote healing as it controls my pain. I honestly haven’t even done anything since post op because my arthritis has improved so much just loosing 30 pounds so far that it’s manageable. I have had to take Tylenol 3 times for pain but it worked. So not sure that helped you.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Same here, I am averaging about 2lbs per week. If I work out less it's less than a pound. I am OK with that though as I hope this helps with some of the shrinking of excess skin as it gets filled in with muscle. Sent from my SM-G998U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

Pants vs. dress right after surgery

I wore loose elastic waist pants and an oversized top. It was comfortable.
