Worth it or not?

Years before I had VSG, I tried the keto diet. Gained 7 lbs. in one week, so I went off it. I am almost 2 years post-op and do not use the word “diet” for myself, as diets have always failed me. I eat intuitively and so far, it seems to be working for me.

Keto Diet
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to lizardskelter's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Only if you can stick to it for life. It's more a lifestyle change, not so much a diet. I did it, and I lost 100 pounds. But in my case, I have PCOS and couldn't keep the weight off no matter how hard I tried. If you do keto and then go off, you will gain all the weight back quickly, and the more you start and stop, the less effective it is. -
Pre op stuff and what did you feel like when you woke up from your bypass surgery?
fourmonthspreop posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey everyone! I'm scheduled for my bypass on Feb 14. So far I've lost 8 lbs on the pre op diet and I'm on day 3 but was dieting pretty hard-core the week I got on my preop. lol it's going well but I get food anxiety about stupid stuff though like what if I ate too much lettuce and get kicked out of ketosis? I know it's so irrational and I've done keto and the nutrition/macro dance of anxiety in the past. I figure as long as I'm losing weight and eating less than 6 grams of carbs a day, my liver is hopefully shrinking. Anyway, I'm trying not to overthink things. That's been helping me so far. They say when you overthink you create problems that weren't there in the first place. Definitely feel like that applies to following a crash diet. Well, with surgery approaching I'll be relieved to not deal with this feeling of emptiness. This is probably going to be one the most challenging parts. I can't help but wonder though and I have terrible medical anxiety, what does it feel like when you wake up from surgery? And in the couple of days post op? Are you: Sore in your stomach? Can you feel your stomach and intestines? Is there a burning sensation? Are you zoned out on pain killers or you can go without them just fine? Do you get gas pain right away? Is it hard to move around? Just wanna know your experience after surgery, hospital and getting home. Thanks for the advice as usual. Love this community! I am going to do this. I had my sleeve done almost 9 years ago. My Dr. told me I would gain all my weight back in 5 years. I’ve worked very hard not to let that happen. I’ve gained 25 pounds back and I know it’s because I was eating carbs. I’ve been on the Keto diet for 4 months with my husband. He’s lost over 40 pounds. I lost 6 and gained them back when we went on vacation. I’m going to do exactly what you said. What kind of protein shakes and vitamins do you use?

Why liquids only?
BelleOfBatonRouge replied to BelleOfBatonRouge's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most of the people here are instructed to do liquids only in the weeks leading up to their surgery, myself included. Also the hallmark of a Keto diet is that it is low carb, high fat. Fat is also something that I was instructed to minimize in my pre-op diet because the liver stores fat as well as carbs. No vegetables for me, I would kill for some steamed broccoli and sliced cucumber. -
Glad to see you back after five years. You are not alone. Many have experienced regain years out. Several are back on the site for support. Counseling and self help resources are a great place to start to find your willpower. Time to deal with emotional stress eating. doing the head work link below. Some things from my weight gain experience to try. (What works for me may not work for you) Clear out your home of temptation- go shopping for foods on your real food plan Extra carbs and real sugar cause cravings and hunger – Detox off them Satisfy sweet and salty cravings with healthy options: Example -Sweet: dannon light n fit yogurt – Salty: Jerky Hydrate and exercise/activity I’m a sleeve, I have less surgery restriction years out. Eat veggies with all the other item on your plan until full. The bulk and fiber will help fill the extra space, They keep your calories low and help with hunger. Log your food (myfitnesspal) the key is to stay within your weight loss calories and macros.(protein and carb goals) Start at 1200 calories. You can dial the numbers up or down to see where your body loses weight. People will mention Pouch reset. ( Its going back to liquids phase and progressing to real food stage) It does not shrink your pouch. Decide if this is too food restrictive. You can always start real food to reset. I'm also 5 years post VSG this year. Dealt with some regain about 3 years ago. Also lost a parent, moved, changed jobs, etc etc etc. My regain was slow and I did the "I can eat everything in small amounts" thing for a while. I went crazy online looking for the magic reset button. I consulted on a RNY revision. I was desperate...then a really ugly health issue (one that I had surgery to help combat) returned and was really bad and I had a very REAL 'come to Jesus meeting' with a doc who told me some cold hard truths. I went full on Keto and haven't looked back. Got the health thing back under control. Lost my regain. The BIGGEST thing- I had to get out of my own head and realize that I knew what to do, I just had to DO IT. So I started attending support groups again, seeking out all sorts of them that were NOT affiliated with my surgeon, since I was embarrassed to run into someone familiar. I also met with a new nut. psych and NP team. I focused on my health and thankfully, mostly got it back again. I know that this will be an ongoing issue for LIFE, for me the work never stops and unfortunately life doesn't just pick up one day as a 'former' WLS patient. I will forever be a WLS patient, working through my plan, dealing with struggles and keeping the focus on point.

Struggling to stop losing
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to LindsayT's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Its just like doing a keto diet for life, you each week up your carbs until you fall out of ketosis than back off by 5-10 grams then maintain that carb load for life. You do the same for calories, increase by 100 for two weeks, still losing..tack on another 100 each few weeks until weight loss stops, now you've found your maintenance calorie load. -
Ok, I'm in! Hello August!!! August Stats: 17m PO RNY, 56y F, 5'4", 135lbs, 23BMI (3w PO for emergency internal hernia with twisted gut) Personal Goal: Want to hit 130lbs by August 20th (18m f/up with my surgeon & oncologist & cardioman) Fun Fact: I used to be a very very very fluffy (325lb) low carb keto food blogger and wrote several digital e-cookbooks. My old blog was Fluffy Chix Cook. I also am a freelance graphic artist and work from home, so most days I work in flannel pjs or stretchy soft shorts and tshirts. LOL. And very fuzzy house slippers. Oh, and in my usual 2percenter way, I overslept 30minutes this morning and missed my running cuz I had a rush job due this morning. Now I have to fit it in today...ahhhh Mondays.

Why do people bash weight loss surgery?
OutsideMatchInside replied to her1981's topic in Rants & Raves
@@Madea61 it did for me. I will admit, I was never on insulin and controlled with pills. I could control my sugar well eating keto, before surgery but it was too hard to maintain and I still had to watch portions. It is a lot easier to eat properly with the sleeve. -
1 year after gastric sleeve problems...
Alsgal replied to Anna N.'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello, I am new to this and also new to the by pass group... my surgery was oct 22, 2020. I have felt this feeling you are talking about, I call it "the twilight zone" it feels disconnected and my bp would be low also. I started feeling it some when I changed my diet, I thought it was keto brain, but when I did the pre op 500 cal shakes only for 2 weeks it got much worse. Now that I'm (almost) 3 weeks post op I feel it less often but add being extremly exhausted. I worry after reading your post that this could be a long term problem. I lost from 365 to 273 pre op, I wondered if I should put the surgery off and do it on my own but I could only imagine regaining what I had lost, like I always have. Sorry this is so long. I wonder if your bp is low during the times you feel you could pass out? -
You can make your own pizza crust out of so many things these days that are low carb, like cauliflower/broccoli, almond meal, canned chicken (I found this one super interesting!) Look for Keto recipes on Pinterest. You'll be amazed by the things people come up with to replace those "bad" carbs.

Ok so I’m not new to this. I am 10 months post op and have for some reason stopped losing weight no matter what I do (this is for over a month already) I realized that the way I’m eating is helping me maintain but I still need to lose about 30-40 lbs so I want to try keto- not for my whole life- just to do a 60 day thing or something just to get my body moving again. This is not a lifestyle change or anything like that....

CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS
Laughkc11 replied to Tresa Embil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Uh.... why the EF am I having 2nd thoughts right now?! Haven't questioned this once until tonight. I discovered keto diet recently (I know... another diet) and I guess because it's something I haven't tried I'm somewhat entertaining the idea of giving it one last shot on my own. Before this liquid diet I really felt controlled by food. It's just interesting how much strength and mental focus comes from eliminating the comforts of food. Perhaps that's why I'm second guessing it. I feel very clear-headed and my desire to succeed in health is amplified. I honestly don't even know what I'm getting at here. I guess this is more of a ramble, and I really don't think I'll back out. It's just an interesting thought process I'm having at the moment. -
I ate at Burger King yesterday
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Google it:) It's a diet designed by Mayo Clinic, one of the finest medical research hospitals on the planet. It resembles the Mediterranean diet and Japanese diet. I like this because both of these diets are correlated with the greatest longevity of anyone on Earth...and the lowest rates of heart disease and cancer. Lots of fruit, veggies, whole grains, lean protien. And 75 calories per day for "sweets" or other treats. I love this diet because it's livable. You won't lose weight screaming fast like keto...but you will lose weight safely and steadily and not feel hungry or deprived. Works for me:) -
Ketosis - How safe is it?
PixelToph replied to IveGotThePower's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did a keto-based diet during my 7 months pre-op, and ended up losing 110 pounds before surgery. My diet was different from the typical "keto" diet since I'm a vegetarian, but I did try to stay below 25 carbs per day. I didn't count calories or fat at all. Just Protein (at least 100g) and carbs (no more than 25). I'm pretty sure I stayed in ketosis most of that time, though I didn't have any way to measure it. I'm almost 6 months out from surgery now and still eat very low carb. I am so glad I started before surgery because it got all the cravings out of the way when cheating wouldn't endanger my healing process. I'm sure it made the first weeks after surgery easier since I didn't have to deal with the cravings. As for safety, my surgeon and nutritionist both recommend a keto diet post-surgery. He says ketosis really helps the weight loss during those first months where most of the weight comes off. I'm just now starting to incorporate some whole vegetables into my diet. My program guidelines say protein only the first 5-6 months, and no simple carbohydrates (bread, Pasta, rice) for a minimum of 1 year (though I probably won't ever add them back in, since for me they trigger the cravings to come back). Just had my bloodwork done for my upcoming 6-month follow-up and all of my numbers are good. -
I eat keto so the fat in chicken salad is great for me. It helps with my protein and fat macros. I don't really eat it anymore because it offers no restriction, but that is a different topic. Not all of us follow the same kind of post-op diets but I think that we can all agree that real food is better than artifical processed foods.
-
I think most of us had differing experiences. For me, I just started feeling satiated longer. Looking back I probably had too much saline in my band most of the time. Getting stuck and regurgitating food seemed like the norm and now I know it shouldn't be. I've had most of my saline removed but got a fill a couple months ago. I think some of the lessons of eating slower with smaller bites has paid off for me. I'm on a Keto diet now and the combination of Keto and a band partially filled seems to be working for me. Just stay away from processed foods, starches and sugars.

I have a keto rash pre-op my surgery is in 3 days. Will this delay surgery. Has anyone gotten this pre-op?
-
With us eating low carbs and high protein and probably falling into ketosis, has anyone experienced a keto rash? I had a rash on my arm a week ago and today have one on my neck. I heard someone on YouTube mention "keto rash" and had never heard of it. Just wondering if my rash is temporarily something else or if in fact it could be "keto rash".

My wife and her friend follow the KETO diet the only thing I find really strange is the "bulletproof coffee which contains MCT oil (a form of coconut oil) and some folks put butter in it as well. Bulletproof coffee is supposed to trigger weight loss by way of Ketosis because of lack of carbs into burning fat, help with cravings.

Did you keep surgery a secret? What did you tell people?
CheriBaby replied to FinallyLosingIt20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's what I'm going to tell everyone except a choice few close people. I've lost on keto before, so will be believable. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app -
There are a lot of reasons to avoid the keto fad. You are already going to be in a keto like state after surgery. As you break down the fat so quickly, you will produce lots of ketones. Fat malabsorption is not unusual after WLS. Eating even more fat is not going to be helpful and a lot of it will just pass through. Fat is not going to give you the nutrition you need in the way of vitamins, minerals, and phytonurtients. It's basically just a lot of calories that you don't need and most likely can't even utilize. Consuming a lot of meat is not even healthy and contributes to a host of other health problems down the road. After WLS, you have 3 immediate goals: Water, protein, and vitamins. As the diet advances, it is still water, protein, and vitamins, but in the form of more whole foods. Getting in a lot of fruits, greens, veggies is the best way to get phytonutrients and vitamins for lifetime health. Every bite you take after WLS should be as nutrient dense as possible and have a purpose for promoting your lifelong health. HIgh meat and high fat does not do that.
