  1. At one year post-op, I have cut out pasta, rice, and carbonation. I will probably never have any of those things. I still follow a keto way of eating; therefore, I keep my carbs below 25 grams per day. So, I have little to no sugar. That is my choice, not my body's demands or anything. As far as alcohol goes, I have some sort of alcohol (usually vodka, water and Crystal Light Lemonade powder that I take to the bar with me) just about every weekend, and when I travel for work (60%-70% of the time), I often have a glass or two of red wine with dinner. I have found that my tolerance is now back to about where it was before the surgery. I have absolutely no issue with the alcohol whatsoever. Like @OutsideMatchInsidesaid, I just allow for the calories on days that I am going to have drinks. (Though, to be honest, I need to get my calories up some to make the weight loss stop, so I haven't been as much of a stickler about it lately.) I haven't tried beer, mostly because of the carbonation issue. And as much as I miss it, and I do, I've adjusted to drinking other things. For the record, I first had alcohol at three months post-op, and there has never been an issue. I've lost 217 pounds (from almost 400 pounds), and am happily at goal (180 pounds). YMMV.
  2. I used to use MCT oil prior to surgery for energy. Post-op I have so much energy I do not need it. I have an almost full bottle I purchased after surgery that I have not used once I think. The first 6 months you should follow your bariatric plan. The stages and foods allowed are a prescription for healing and to lessen complications, after you are healed at 6 months you can do what you want. I used a keto calculator to create my macros, and I followed them very closely for a long time. A lot of the things that people that are not WLS patients do with keto are not necessary for WLS patients. The whole first year I had no physical hunger so I didn't have to do a lot of the popular tricks that people do. Like the whole purpose of bulletproof coffee is to extend your fast in the morning so you even up intermittent fasting, at least how it was originally intended by the Bulletproof guy Dave Aspey (been a fan of his for years). It is easy to fast for extended periods post-op WLS with no hunger. People online really bastardize the whole bulletproof coffee thing. If you are used to low carbing, life post-op WLS is not really much of a change at all. The only difference is smaller portions and you have to eat more often. A person that is used to being Keto adapted and knows what to expect has the advantage in the WLS world. It made most of it pretty easy for me, I wasn't whining about missing crackers and other crap I didn't eat before anyway. Bariatriceating is always trying to sell their BS shakes so I am not sure they are the best source. Their NO NO List is I used heavy cream in my coffee when I struggled to keep my calories up. Unlimited bacon as a no no is only because I don't have the room and can't meet my protein goals with it. I only use FULL FAT everything. The rest of it is fake and has additional carbs. Their ratios on how to eat are not Keto at all, they have carbs almost equal to protein and that is not keto whatsoever. I hate that website so much, ugh. Anyway... I set my macros goals by setting my protein goal first. My protein goal has been 120 grams a day, at first post-op it was 90, then I raised it to 120. My protein goal is based on my muscle mass. Here are my keto goals as they progressed. 2 months Post-Op 4 months Post-Op This is my current bare minimum calories for the day. I can lose like this but I can lose eating more calories also. This is my baseline to function without being dizzy or tired.
  3. LOL- I guess Ive been Googling the wrong words, here's a new one.... https://www.bariatriceating.com/2017/03/bee-keto-bariatric-plan/
  4. I am cleaning out my cabinet and found a fairly new bottle of MCT Oil (I dont want to throw it out...). In the past, I used it mostly for bulletproof coffee but since I am pre-surgery I am weaning off coffee for a while. I plan on saving this (expensive) stuff and want to know how I would use it post-op, several months out once I start eating again. Can I even use it? I am soaking in all of the information I can pre-op so I will be prepared for this huge lifestyle change- I know I need to learn a whole new way of thinking towards food and the way I eat and this is the time to do it! Yes, there are lots of posts and books and websites about this but I cannot find anything specifically about eating Keto post surgery with recipes and direction on how to start making the change, what to expect, what to do and not to do. It's a HUGE change and I want to get it right......thank you!!

    Keto diet

Lol do some research. Drinking ketones just makes your pee say your back in ketosis. But your Not. If you eat loads of carbs then drink that it will show ketosis reading but you are not in the actual fat burning keto mode. Its just showing it in your pee. It takes the exact amount of time to get back on track except the potion makes you believe your in genuine ketosis when its just you peeing out what you drank

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Oh yes. I’ve heard and read countless stories of improved health from adopting a healthy Whole Foods plant based diet. Even to just as small as improved acne (which I’m sure is huge with some). Imagine how much health saved if the western world would adopt this way? The western diet has gone too far, and now it’s up to the select few doctors and scientists to go against the western media, corporations, and the government, to expose by science and testimonies that plant based is the only lifestyle diet that is long term sustainable for your health. Folks may say “oh, I can eat keto for the rest of my life.” I’m sure they can, but at what cost to their health long term? Why I love Dr Greger’s website...you can be educated and make the decisions on your own based on facts: “Here at NutritionFacts.org, we believe that a significant part of the problem is that individuals who want to make the correct dietary choices for themselves and their families are faced with a deluge of confusing and conflicting nutritional advice. Our goal is to present you and your doctor with the results of the latest in peer-reviewed nutrition and health research, presented in a way that is easy to understand.”

    Pre-op diet

I wasn’t required to do the clear diet at the time but my doctor wanted me to lose ten pounds and keto wasn’t working for me so I did the liver reduction diet (shakes, clears and SF jello and popsicles) The first few days were awfully stressful and had to eat so I roasted chicken breasts and broccoli, no oil or butter. It didn’t take much and I felt better quickly. I drank lots of homemade chicken broth. Hang tight hun, you’re almost there [emoji847]
  11. Thanks for the info. The Keto Reset Diet has intermittent fasting in it . Like anything it's sticking to it which is my problem.
  12. It's very frustrating to be stuck and not loose weight. The Whole 30 plan is really good. There is a lot of support for the plan and you only do it for 30 days then see how you feel. Sugar is in everything and one of the worst things we can eat as are the bad carbs. There are so many good books out there on why protein is better for you from the original Atkins to , Eat Fat Get Thin, The Keto Reset Diet, Zero Sugar Diet then there is the Paleo diet and the combined Paleo keto. Other books Fat Chance, The Case Against Sugar, Why we get fat, Grain Brain and so many more tell us why sugar, white products and bad carbs effect our health. If reading and researching made me loose weight I'd be thin for the rest of my life. LOL I guess it's a trial and error for each person. I'm still stuck but I do know I feel better when I don't eat sugar. I wish there was an answer to getting past the stuck phase. Good Luck and I hope you get your sugar levels under control.

HELPPPP ME :( I cant stop itching

There are a couple of things that come to mind here. First, when you are on a high protein diet you can get constipated. Second, what is your water intake? If you are drinking coffee or any caffeinated beverage you have to add double the amount of water to cover the caffeine intake because it will dehydrate you. The itching could be a sign of dehydration. You have to drink at least 64oz of water plus the water you intake for protein and food. Second, your body is going through a drastic nutritional change make sure you are getting the right vitamins. Third with this nutritional change comes new allergies, likes, and dislikes. Look at what you are eating. Low carb diets could cause Keto Rashes. Look up, Keto Rash or Candida.
  14. This so much. I run my own business and people ask me all the time how much money I make. I give a fake number every single time. A rude question does not deserve a response. I tell people the truth, I eat low carb. I eat Keto. I adopted a dog so I have to walk everyday. I removed a lot of stress from my life. I stopped eating my feelings. It took me 5 years to get here. All of that is the truth, none of it is a lie. When people ask me why I only have 1 child (only in the midwest I swear) I tell them because I use birth control and that is all I wanted. I don't tell them what method of birth control I use. Honestly WLS is not even why I lost the weight. I lost the weight. I picked WLS to help me and I used it to help me but I could be like most WLS and have failed at it. I only succeed at WLS because I was super strict and worked my ass off. Prior to having surgery myself I thought surgery did all if not most of the work but sugery after 6 months isn't doing anything for people. They have to do the work. If they haven't used that first 6 months of healing to make a real life style change. They are stalled by month 9 and actively gaining by month 12. They never hit goal and over the years they just keep gaining and gaining. All the little threads people make shouting out their surgery date buddies are so cute in the pre-op and early stages. Then as the months go on few and fewer are responding, still losing or at goal. Less than half by year one, then by year 2 it is crickets. Half my WLS buddies who had surgery when I did barely talk to me, because they never hit their goals. It sucks. Stop calling people that don't blab all their business to people that are not entitled to it, liars. A generation ago, this would have never been an issue. The death of privacy is horrific.
  15. So I have come to the conclusion that I have a racer back gym shirt problem. I keep buying more shirts and they are soo cute and they make me feel cute. I am still kicking butt on my workouts and I have decided to end Keto for now. I have been stressing a lot about food and unfortunately, I hold on to weight that way. It is time to go back to just being mindful of what I eat and how much.

Although I look great in clothing, I wanted to show what my body looks like outside of it. My stomach is sagging lower than before I lost weight. My arms are sagging and my breast have deflated.

With that being said, I would not go back and change anything. I would not give up being able to jump, bike, go shopping easily and feel comfortable in clothes for anything. I would not trade this confidence or happiness. I am soo a peace with myself and my body. The aches that I feel are from soreness of pushing my body, than from being too heavy that my body cannot handle the weight.

This journey has saved my life in more ways than I could ever imagine. I do not hide from the world anymore. I do not hide from people. I go out and want to explore. I meet new people. I have been freed from the burdens my weight had placed on me mentally and physically.

With being said, "I LOVE MY IMPERFECTLY PERFECT BODY!!"

@Newme17 You are right. When it came to Keto, I was stressing out a lot about carbs. That was the hardest part and I noticed that I started feeling anxiety when shopping for foods. Especially, since I stay away from cakes and cookies. I need my fruits and I was limited there as well. Even though I stopped Keto, I will keep some great aspects from it. I have completely cut out bread and flour tortillas. Rice is only a 1/4 cup once every 2 weeks.

I am with you. If for some reason, I cannot pay to have the skin removed when I am ready to cross that bridge, then so be it. My skin is my journey. Each tiger strip or roll is my badge of honor.

Yes. It is now time for me to enjoy my life. Just enjoy brining able to move easily and effectively.

@Thejeweledsleeve I just tried to hit the reply button, or what I thought was the reply button, and hit the report button instead. Geez. Anyway, I was laughing at your needing to pull your leg up using your pant leg to tie your shoes. I can so relate to that situation. I also relate to struggling with the keto diet. I miss having fruit. I think as long as I keep my calories under 1000, I should be able to add a peach here and there.

End of the year Athem Approvals

I'm not sure the "meeting your deductible or Out of Pocket" expense is part of the actual approval process or its criteria. I started in May 2017 and had to go through the blood panels, exercise evaluation, colonoscopy, psych eval, several consults with a Nutritionist, and get a letter of recommendation from my PCP, two sleep studies for apnea and of course meeting with the surgeon several times. This actually took about six months. I did the sleep study early on because I knew I had severe apnea and needed to be on a BiPap machine for at least 30 days prior to being submitted for approval. On the 3rd and last pre op visit with the doc he told me to lose 10-15 pounds then sent me to his affiliated Nutritionist who set me up with a Keto diet. I failed that because although I was in ketosis many times, I still ate too many calories. I decided to go on the Bariatric Fusion website Liver Reduction Diet. It sucked but I ended up being OK with shakes and homemade chicken stock. I lost 13.5 pounds and at my next doc visit he submitted me to my insurance and I literally was approved within 72 hours. I am in California with Anthem Blue Cross. It's end of year and my OOP will happen to be less than $500. I know it's not what you want to hear but what I'm learning here is if you're self pay, almost anything goes. If you're insured (and their rules vary wildly) we have to be patient and abide by what they tell us to be approved. I've actually taken this time to "try" to reprogram my stubborn mindset into learning another way of thinking about food and my eating habits. This site is an amazing resource and I think the most important take away is that I need to realize my life will forever be changed the moment I come out of the recovery room and I truly need to be committed to a healthier lifestyle. I'm 53 and it's my time. Watch out [emoji8][emoji8][emoji8][emoji8]

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

I had my sleeve on 8/22. I'm on puréed foods now. I made the baked ricotta and it was delicious! My husband had an idea to steam broccoli and add small bacon bits and some bacon fat to it, then purée it. Must say, it's delicious! We follow a keto diet, so the fat is great for us.

Trying to get back on Track

Did your surgeon give you a plan to follow? I had a really hard time losing my pre-op weight at first. Then I went on Pinterest and found a bunch of low carb recipes. Following the keto method helped me drop a lot of weight easily, and I was always satisfied. Its so hard figuring out what is going to work for you and your body. I decided to stop eating simple carbs and focus on carbs from veggies. Using a tracking app like MyFitnessPal really helped me with portion control. And reading the book Never Binge Again helped me deal with my food addiction. It's an ongoing struggle though! I hope you can find a plan that works well for you! You can do it!

    Carbs

Ok, so all those calculators on the internet suck!!! I've been saying I eat 1200 calories, but in formulating an answer to this post, I found out it's closer to 1000! Sheesh. Ok..so my original post... : <<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Carbs are "fillers", calorie-wise. First, figure out your calorie goal. I like mine at 1200, for example. Then protein: mine is 70g. (280 cals). Then fat: Around 40g. (360 cals). 280+360= 640cals. 1200-640= 560 / 4= 140g carbs... <<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> But I know I don't eat that many carbs! So I went through and retotalled them by hand. My new totals.. 78g net carbohydrate (312 calories) 74g protein (296 calories) 45g fat (405 calories) Total: 1013 calories All those people on the super low carb, keto diets.. if they eat 150g protein and 20g carbs, that's only 680 calories. If they aren't trying to lose weight, they need to eat the equivalent of 10-15 tablespoons of fat. Wowsers..

    Carbs

5-7 bites of even seemingly Healthy food can relate into a ton of Carbs. Condiments are another area that you really have to watch as well. My Best Friend is the Nutrition Label and so many times people neglect multiplying by the true serving size. I would in the past ridicule the Low Carb Keto lifestyle but the last 9 months and 200 pound loss has shown me that for me it works. Good Luck In your Weight loss Journey.
  23. Hello, my name is Terri and today is a good day. The only persons I have told about my surgery is my two grown sons and to my surprise they are being very supportive- but that's the end of it. They're gone, they're grown with their own lives and they dont want to hear what Mom's going through on a daily basis lol. And that is A-OK with me...I haven't told any of my girlfriends and that's what hurts, I'm guessing the level of trust and faith that they wouldn't judge me isn't quite there. Chalk it up to another life learning experience. I'm happy I found this new Forum Topic, I could sure use a mentor right about now I was told by my doctor to lose 10-15 pre surgery pounds and after a very rough start with a Keto plan I said screw it and opted for the Liver Reduction Plan- I have been living on Bariatric Fusion shakes and homemade broth, SF Popsicles and SF jello, V8 and Diet Cranberry juice for the past 20 days. After about three days my body got used to the transition and I was no longer hungry, have been sleeping very well on my new CPAP machine and the days flew by. Went in to see my surgeon and lost 13 pounds. I haven't felt this great in a very long time!! Physically and emotionally. All of the paperwork is in and they will be seeking approval. Now I am faced with this thing that I've educated myself on, mentally plowed on through endless needle pricks, weigh ins and signatures. This thing that I want so bad is finally here and I feel all alone and scared shitless. Yikes.....
  24. You know that time you paid good money for that one product that boast "delicious flavor" whilst offering high amounts of protein and nutrition.....only to take one bite or sip and gag on the flavor, texture, or viscosity? Let's face it-- a VAST majority of "bariatric protein drinks", high protein "keto foods", or "bariatric vitamin supplements" taste like . SOOOO..... in an effort to help each other save time and money, please post the products you have tried and what you would rate them. Either a: or . Adding pics of the products would be very helpful. I'll start by posting a few products I've tried in the comments.
  25. Thanks. My BP medication is a beta blocker. I noticed when I stopped it for a week my HR went down, but now that I started it back, it's back up. I was doing reading last night and it sounds like this can also happen with a keto type diet. I don't think my carbs are low enough to be in ketosis, but maybe it's somehow related. HR definitely jumps after eating. Wonky is right! Thanks! Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app
