    Post op eating

Hello I had my gastric bypass on Sept 23 and received the exact same requirement and it is a struggle. I normally do a shake for breakfast about 25gram, one throughout the day at 25 gram and a yogurt of about 15 grams and heavy protein rich meats. I also eat every 2 hours and throw in a sugarfree apple sauce. Good luck
  2. Hi - I am 6 days post op. I am in phase 2 of eating where i am ok to eat soups, jello, yogurt, etc.. but I'm supposed to be getting 64g of protein per day. My problem is that i can't tolerate any sugar substitutes. I am really struggling with things i can eat (drink) that are high in protein but don't have any fake sugar substitutes. I have tried the GenePro tasteless protein powder as well and couldn't keep that down either. Does anyone have any other suggestions of foods/drinks to try that do not have sugar substitutes but are high in protein? There is only so much plain yogurt, tea, broth etc... i can take in and am no where near the protein goal with those options. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
  3. I can actually get down on the floor now and GET UP BY MYSELF! This is still quite amazing to me. There is a ton of information about WFPB eating online. Go to You Tube and watch "The Game Changers" and "Forks over Knives." That will give you a good idea. Basically it is WHOLE, unprocessed food. That means food as close to its natural state as possible. Whole grains, not refined grains, for example. No processed sugars, no animal products (that includes dairy and eggs), no processed oils (you use avocados, nuts and seeds and nut butters instead.) LOTS and LOTS of veggies and fruit, plenty of starchy veggies, lots of legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, no alcohol, no soda or artificial colors/flavors/chemicals, decreased salt. Many WFPB folks also avoid gluten (wheat, rye, barley) and I am highly sensitive to it, so have already avoided that for years. I get more than enough protein, tons of fibers and phytonutrients, eat all I want, am never hungry, have tons of energy, and am NEVER sore after workouts. Amazingly, my cholesterol always hovered around 225-235, even after losing over 100 pounds. Once I went WFPB, my cholesterol dropped like a rock to 152 (80 points!!!). My triglycerides and LDL also plummeted. Even with the low total cholesterol, my HDL went up to 80. For me, it is a lifestyle that I will maintain for life. It is change, for sure, but not actually hard to do. Most of my family is making the switch as well. You don't have to go 100%, either. When you look at the areas of the world (the blue zones) where people live to be over 100 and have virtually no cardiac disease, osteoporosis, dementia, cancer, or diabetes, these are all plant based societies. Does this mean they won't eat some fish or cassowary eggs if they find them? No. But animal protein is the exception or reserved for celebrations. They don't eat meat 3 times a day like most of the western world does. I will occasionally eat an egg (my own backyard chickens) or a little wild game meat. (The more I learn about commercially raised cattle, hogs, chickens, turkeys and dairy cows, the more I cannot bring myself to eat these products.) So there you go - probably more info than you wanted. I started this about 6 months after my surgery as I learned about it and once I was able to eat the volume that is required. I had to rely a bit more on the grains and nuts to keep my calories up so I wouldn't keep losing weight. I used pea protein powder as needed to keep my protein up. I don't need that now, with the increased legumes, tofu, tempeh, and soy/oat milk and yogurt. Now I eat a lot more of the veggies and legumes, and control my weight very easily with decreasing/increasing the grains and nuts. I did gain 8 pounds of COVID weight, but have lost all of it and some extra, just by cutting back a bit on the nuts and grains. It really couldn't be easier!

    Getting in your protein grams

It's a challenge! My goal is 60 grams of protein per day, and I still don't always get that much. I usually need to drink half a protein shake or some protein hot chocolate to get to 60 grams in a day. I also mix protein powder into anything I can. My go-to breakfast is half a thing of Greek yogurt with half a scoop of protein powder (vanilla yogurt with birthday cake protein powder is my favorite), for 18 grams of protein. I mix unflavored protein powder with soups or refried beans, and cinnamon roll protein powder with protein oatmeal. Not sure if you're allowed to have crunchy things yet, but I love Quest protein chips. They have 18-20 grams of protein per bag. I make taco bites with them (1/3 bag of protein chips, chicken, salsa, lettuce, tomato, plain Greek yogurt).

    Getting in your protein grams

I eat Chomps as a snack...they are grass fed beef/turkey/venison sticks. They have 90 calories and 9 grams of protein. About an ounce and a half. I also add collagen powder to my coffee (9 grams of protein, plus good for skin and hair) and 1/4 of a protein shake, usually caramel Premier Protein or Fairlife Vanilla (approximately 7.5 grams of protein). Throw in a Greek yogurt and you are almost there!
  6. I made pork carnitas last night. This is leftovers with 1/4 avocado, 1 T ff plain greek yogurt, 4 grape tomatoes, 1 T cotija cheese and Cholula hot sauce. I had this for lunch today. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Struggling :/

I eat a lot of Greek yogurt. Like at least twice a day. Also, I have a protein shake every day because I malabsorb protein - I usually use whey protein isolate, which also has calcium. And I mix the powder with unsweetened almond milk, which also has calcium.

    Sleeve to Bypass & hungry?

Yeah the restriction is different. I’ve been eating 1/2 cup of yogurt and then stopping trying to see how I feel like am I full idk? Then I hiccup and I’m like okay I’m sure I’m full. I think it’s good we aren’t feeling it. Means we aren’t filling out stomach up yay! 7-10 days I do liquids. Tomorrow i can have soft foods and I cannot wait I just want an egg! I think with regular food we will feel it. For now I’ll just use measuring cup and only eat that. When you hear gurgling or hiccup stop? Who knows lol I’m glad I did this though.

    Anyone for October 2020?

No soft food until week 4-5 - yikes. Did she/he provide any recommendations on how to get there other than siping on protein shakes all day? And by soft, can you have yogurt, cottage cheese, and oatmeal now? Adding another protein shake would add some calories and plenty of protein until you hit week 4 later this week. Even then, an egg is only about 6 gas of protein compared to the 20-30 in 11oz of protein shake.

    Anyone for October 2020?

Great comments all and I had my first official check in post surgery yesterday. Here is the read-out from my Dr. and as you can imagine, I had lots of questions. I am starting my 4th week post surgery. Lightheadedness - this could be different things ranging from low calories, low blood sugar, to too much BP meds. Pre-op I was on losartan 25mg, but they recommended I break the tabs in half and I may be soon to eliminate it altogether. Also advised to introduce some Gatorade (20 oz) to help with the blood sugar, but cautioned not to overdue it. Calories - I started phase 2 of soft foods this week and with my Dr.'s diet that was the introduction of scrambled eggs, canned tuna/salmon, toast or crackers. I also have to drop the protein shake as they want my daily protein to come from food. I screwed up previously and mentioned beans, but that is not until next week (wk5). I did have about a ⅛ cup of refried beans when we out for Mexican last night (yes, I love to torture myself) and it was okay. One word of caution, spicy food wrecks me in the GI track. Dr. did say spicy food may impact stomach lining so best to wait, but I never thought the beans were that spicy before. I seem to be hyper-sensitive to spice now both on taste buds and tummy, where before I could eat jalapeños, Korean chili, hot Indian curry without issue. Dr. did not seem concerned about the amount of calories and just encouraged following the diet. They were adamant about sticking to three meals a day with one snack. I am shooting for 40-60 grams of protein which is quite a bit and we'll see how it goes. Recovery - minus the lightheadedness, every seems to be going well. Was a little worried about dark stools, but unless they are black and they continue to be black, all should be okay. Incision sites healed nicely although I have these little dents in my belly which I am sure will go away with weight loss. I have been able to walk okay and will be advancing to a resistance band workout next week to help start the road to recovering muscle mass. I did some work in the years this weekend and while I did feel weak, I managed. I do need to figure out a better hydration process when doing physical activity as I just can't sip enough and get anything done outside. I don't really get hungry, but I can tell when it's time to eat; kind of difficult to describe. I'm currently down 39 pounds from my initial weight with 61 to go for my goal. Diet - I'm glad to start introducing more normal food and while I like all the foods on the other phases like plain greek yogurt, plain oatmeal, grits, cottage cheese, it just didn't feel like eating. My diet this week will consist of one scrambled egg in the morning (recommended ½, but was okay with a whole), canned tuna/salmon with a teaspoon of mayo for lunch, and likely repeat for dinner. I find the flavored tuna packets are about perfect and just have to stay away from the spicy flavors for now (see above). A shocker to a friend who also had a sleeve a couple of years ago, is that I am allowed to drink coffee and the Dr. didn't have an issue with caffeine. Some stay away due to the acidity, but mine didn't have an issue. I am on the prescription heart-burn medicine for the first 90 days, so I guess it will depend later once off the meds to see if coffee upsets my tummy. I'm currently having about 20oz a day, but it takes me a couple hours to drink it (thank goodness for my Yeti mug that keeps it warm). I do introduce small taste here and there when the Mrs. is cooking, but nothing extreme. I dip the spoon in the sauce and taste the residual left on the back versus eating a spoon full from the front. Lots of gurgling but no pain. I've only had an issue of dumping once (or at least I think that was what it was) and that was after eating spicy tuna with mayo and I won't be doing that again for a while. Starting calcium with D supplements this week also. Sorry for the long post, but want to give an update for any of the curious folks out there.

    Surgery tomorrow 11-10-20

Good luck!! I hope you have an easy, breezy surgery! Don't worry about puree stage...refried beans are a life saver! Also, my nutritionist said as long as you chew, chew, chew anything is a puree! LOL So I wouldn't eat steak or anything, but tuna fish and chicken salad made with greek yogurt and mashed well with a fork worked for me. YOU CAN DO THIS!

    Surgery tomorrow 11-10-20

I didn't puree any meats, either. I had a few during the soft food stage (tuna and shrimp come to mind), but I think when I was in the puree stage I ate things like Greek yogurt and pureed cottage cheese.

I did call my surgeon's office today and got the okay to start soft foods but limited it to greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and poached eggs. Nothing solid. I had 1/4 cup cottage cheese for lunch. It was soooo goood!!! Sent from my SM-T710 using BariatricPal mobile app

Just finished my breakfast of some Two Good vanilla yogurt mixed with protein powder and a splash of vanilla Premier shake. Mid-morning snack will probably be some Progresso creamy tomato basil soup (also with protein powder). I gotta tell ya... I have never tried that particular soup before, but I had some yesterday, and it was so good I wanted to cry LOL... Anyone already sleeved feel like they are constantly watching the clock? I am in the no drinking 15 min before or 30 min after stage (it will soon switch to 30 & 30 I think... gotta read my paperwork again), and am having such a hard time getting my water in all day. I used to be a guzzler and would drink SO much water, but now, it's so hard. I could start soft foods today, according to my surgeon, but I think I am holding off on that for a bit, because I am scared after all the complications I had.

    November 2020 sleevers

I'm home now and doing great! Still doing fine with my liquids. Sometimes I get a mild discomfort probably because I forget to sip instead of gulping it down like a horse. I'm on phase 1 of postop restrictions...two weeks doing 1- 2 ounce liquids every fifteen minutes with the goal of getting to 64 oz of liquid in the day. I'm allowed my protein shakes, broths, diluted apple and grape juice, crystal light, decaf coffee and tea and some other drinks. My surgeon also allows for watery yogurt and apple sauce. I'm also on 4 medications. One (muscle spams) I'm suppose to take for 2 weeks, second one (stomach acid blocker) is suppose to go for 4 weeks. The other two is an as needed basis since they help with pain and nausea. Fortunately, I didn't need the pain or nausea medications yet. Crossing my fingers it continues this way. I am not hungry, but do feel mental desires. However, while going through the pharmacy nothing made my mouth water or ache to have it. When I got home and saw the food I normally eat, I did have a moment of " I wish I could eat that" but I overcame it very quickly. I don't have a choice, but to keep going forward and there's no turning back which I'm quite happy with. Besides in time, we'll be able to eat again just smaller portions. I'm moving about, but I have to remind myself that a few days ago I had surgery. My body has so far handled it well.
  16. Use plant based protein powder and shakes. such as Orgain with 20 gm of protein. Ripple milk is great with 8 gm per cup. I developed a whey intolerance after surgery and don't consume any dairy products now. 90 gm of protein is a lot for a woman. My surgeon's guidelines for women were as follows: 60 inches tall (5 ft): 50 - 60 gms per day 65 inches ( 5 ft 5 in): 60 - 65 gm per day 70 inches (5 ft 8 in): 65 - 70 gm per day Only very tall men need to get in 90 gm/day per my surgeon. So I wouldn't worry too much if you can't get in that much.. Anyway, I use soy or oat milk yogurt, Ripple milk, and plenty of legumes. I have no problem getting in my protein every day. It's not hard, even being lactose intolerant.
  17. Hello All I am new to this forum. I am 6 weeks post op and have lost about 30 lbs. My issue is that I need to have an intake of 90 grams protein and am not hitting it. I am eating protein rich food weighing everything, drinking shakes and eating yogurt. My problem is that most protein shakes make me fill ill. Even the yogurt turns my stomach. I am also allergic to milk so everything is lactose and milk free. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I know there seems to be a lot of controversy about the brand, but it was what my nutritionist recommended... I got a sample (on my own) pre-surgery, and it was great as far as not being able to taste it, so... I use Genepro. Pre-surgery, I tried it in some yogurt, and in just plain water. Couldn't detect it in the yogurt at all, and could only marginally in the water (it might be undetectable if I added some Mio or something...) The Premier Protein is just all gross to me now, though I still slog through because I don't want to waste the ones I have.

    Revision completed

Hi I had my revision Monday 11/2. 11/3 was horrible. Not as easy as the sleeve was and I’m starving lol I cried, my nurses (2) sucked and I was in a lot of pain! More then before way more but today is day 5 post op and I’m better. My incisions started to get infected bcuz I had a rash from the dermabond so I had to Peep it off and now I’m on a horse pill antibiotic. I’m already dropping weight. I only felt a little acid last night when I had Greek yogurt. My doc gave me a diet plan to follow from day 3-16.

    Anyone November 2020

I had my bypass this past Thursday morning, the 5th, and it went well. My doc also repaired my hiatal hernia while he was in there. I spent one night in the hospital. I feel very fortunate because I had no nausea, and didn’t even need any pain meds until I got home Friday afternoon and started moving around more. When I strain at all, even getting up out of a chair, I get sharp pains on my left side where the incisions are. But I feel fine if I’m just sitting still or standing. I’m looking forward to tomorrow because I’ll be able to add a few more foods. After two weeks of only jello, popsicles and broth, that yogurt is going to taste awfully good!

    LOSING TOO FAST?

Thanks for replying. I'm averaging around 800 calories a day which i thought was quite good so early (only 3 weeks out of surgery & on the puree food stage). I could increase my milk intake as a quick calorie boost but it makes me feel a little sick. I don't want to add protein powder to anything as I'm hitting at least 70g of it a day via lean meat, protein water & protein yogurts (i hate the shakes too🙂) Thanks for the reminder that this is very early still & the tiredness is normal for now. I'm seeing my nutritionist next week so will discuss & show her my food diary. If I get any useful advice I'll post back for others!

  23. I'm only 10 days post op, so pretty close to you in the process but I've not had any troubles getting liquids down. I never felt full at all with liquids. I started adding yogurt in yesterday and it's the first I've noticed starting to feel a little "full" before finishing the cup. I can tell you I have a LOT of head cravings but no true hunger I don't think. That having been said, I'm frigging sick of liquids. Soo ready to move on to purees Monday. 24. You can mix protein powder into a lot of pureed foods. I still eat a lot of pureed foods with protein powder. Examples: yogurt, refried beans, mashed cauliflower, pureed black bean soup, protein oatmeal, no-sugar-added applesauce, sugar-free pudding. I like to use flavored protein powder for sweet things (example: chocolate protein powder and powdered peanut butter mixed into vanilla yogurt; cinnamon roll protein powder mixed in protein oatmeal) and unflavored for savory things.

    Favorite Grocery Products

Whipped cream! Very few cals for major decadence. Also the pumpkin spiced version tastes like a whole pumpkin pie so on coffee, yogurt, jello, etc. I imagine it would be perfect Walmart: Aldi (seasonal?) : This is a double serving of pumpkin spice (12g - 30 cals - 2 carb - 2 fat) 😍
