No , they never gave a number. Rny: low fat and very little carb. Just a lot people on maintenance found doing keto/ Paleo helpful in maintenance. Some wish they would of done this earlier. Sent from my Nexus 5 using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm not going keto, but my fat is not that high. Like today, (I have added two meals and a snack I haven't eaten yet, and at least one meal I have no idea what is going to be), I have these stats. Based on 4 meals and a snack 71g of carbs, 33g of fat and 131g of protein. 1113 calories.

Mery's blood levels for protein are low. Until she can get those levels up, she needs to keep eating her protein. I had just come across a study that mentioned the increased need for protein in the absence of enough carbs... thus my thinking to increase carbs to take the pressure off the protein. Keto works for some people, but I'm not under the impression she wants to go that way.

This is only hypothetical right now. I would plan on getting between 20-30g of net carbs per day. They will obviously fluctuate. I know that I can steadily maintain at that level pre-op (cals around 1200-1500). So I'm gonna cross my fingers that by reducing my calories/fats to the level that I'm between 600-800cals/day and protein around 74g daily, carbs between 20g-30g net with a goal of 20g of fiber per day, that I will be able to lose weight...but it's very theoretical right now. I plan on getting my fiber from benefiber, greens blended into protein smoothies, nuts/seeds, a tiny bit from berries maybe even an occasional ounce or two of GS apple with peel blended into my protein smoothie. But this might be pie-in-the-sky planning. I know a lot of ketoneers and low carbers don't place much stock in fiber, but being post-meno 53+ female, I found by trial and error that my keto lifestyle/weight loss did better with slightly lower fat, and slightly higher fiber/leafy greens. Think it may be tied to thyroid function, the lower I went on carbs, the slower my thyroid became.

I am 3 months out and posed a similar question on here. I have used some Keto recipes but I am watching the fat. I have a meeting with my nutritionist to ask about the best break down in terms of % of protein, carbs and fat. I think it will be individual and best to talk with your RD. Best luck!

I am not at the solid food stage yet, but I'm thinking about a Keto style of eating, trying to make sure that I can get in my 60 grams of protein daily. Have any of you done or are doing this? I'd love your feedback!

Husband told people about surgery
A_new_sara replied to M.A.'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
People have no idea I've had it. Why? Because months before my surgery I started the keto diet, and working out. I was losing weight like crazy! I haven't changed one thing since my surgery, including my portions. Everyone assumes it's just the keto diet. (which is it, along with portion control). I've lost 65 lbs total and I go to the gym 6 days a week. It's obvious that I'm working my ass off to lose weight. So, no, people don't just "know" -
Intermittent Fasting
FluffyChix replied to Apple1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It is a keto diet. The balance for weight loss comes with addition of fat. Dr. B. is a T1 70+ years old with no diabetic neuropathy. His A1c is in the 4s and he takes only 5 units of fast acting insulin per meal. His patients do very well...they are all non WLS patients. not all salads. You would have to read his stuff. But very simple meals for sure. -
30g carbs plus 63g protein equals 372 calories. This is probably a ketogenic diet, or at least borderline keto.. and you'd have to eat 4.5oz of fat a day to bring it up to 1500 calories. Half a cup of oil, spread out on 3 big salads (That's how I imagine this working). It's not a bad idea, but it's not surprising he got control of blood sugar levels.. Basically people are getting 3 salads a day with a small amount of meat on each one, a few nuts, a bunch of dressing, and a side of corn or beans at noon and night. No dairy except cheese, no fruit, no grains. I think it'd be fun for about a day... but what can you do when you have a disease? You do what you can to make it go away (or as close to "away" as possible). Kudos to the good doctor for formulating a plan to help people. And, of course, it wouldn't HAVE to be salad all the time.. an omelet in the morning, meat, potatoes, and veg at night.. doesn't sound so bad...

Jeaniered replied to Nancy MBGC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m following a keto style diet which is pretty much what is advised for bariatric dieters. I concentrate on protein, then fat and avoid carbs. I follow the plan that I’ve attached below. I have this on my fridge to remind me. -
Let's Play Another Round of "How I Get My Protein" post WLS
niseys4 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hello Everyone! I have been reading all your post to this game & I think its pretty interesting! Im now 9wks post op & this morning my scale showed my weight at 188. My weight b4 surgery was 210. Im happy to loose my weight slowly so that I can stay on top of firming up my flabby skin! Anyway I started eating regular foods at 3 1/2 wks PO but I was having trouble getting my required protein in! I could no longer tolerate any flavor of premier shakes or cheese & i dont like milk. Never have. Finally I started using the Isopure protein powder mixing it in my flavored water. Now I feel much better about my protein intake. I can drink up to 48oz of water but it has to be flavored! Now that Im nearly 3 mos post op & can get more variety of foods, I would like to get my protein requirement as well as cal, carbs, fiber & fats by eating real foods & just limit my protein powder for on my workout days! Also since I still cant eat cheese( except cottage cheese), All porks & tuna, Im going Keto paleo/vegan dieting! I love avocados with my food, all healthy oils, salsas, beans & Ezekiel product are my favorites! Soo please continue to post your meal plans for me to get good ideas![emoji16] Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app -
May 15th, 2017 Sleevers Check in Here!!!
Apple1 replied to Newme17's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was going to post this last night, but I fell asleep..lol... I hit my goal weight yesterday morning at 159.8 I am officially at a healthy BMI !!! I wanted to post it here on our thread. I am so thankful to all of you for your support through these last five months. It has been a wild ride for me with many changes. I started it out thinking I was going to stay on a low carb keto type diet because I believed that was what I needed to keep my type 2 diabetes in remission. I was afraid to try anything different, but when @Newme17 posted about the book she was reading, "Proteinaholic", I decided it was time to do research this further. Since reading that first book I have devoured several others on the subject of diet. "The Cheese Trap", "How Not to Die", The Starch Solution", The Omnivore's Dilemma", and "The China Study". What I have learned is that the closer we can get our diet to eating WFPB (whole foods plant based) the better off we will be. My diet is about 90% WFPB with the other 10% being diary and a little fish/eggs. I eat a ton of salads, beans, veggies of all types, whole grains, and a little fruit. I should eat more fruit, but I just don't seem to gravitate towards it..lol.. I still don't eat much bread at all. I just don't have room in my stomach for it or much pasta.I feel so good eating this way. I have lots of energy!! I have noticed a slight increase in my blood sugar the past 2 weeks, but it is still in the healthy range and no medications!! I want to point out that our bodies were designed to process carbohydrates for energy, that is why we have a pancreas and insulin. This is our bodies first choice for energy and as long as we are eating healthy complex whole grains we are giving it what it needs to thrive. The other big change has been running. I never thought this would be the case for me, but since I hate going to the gym I needed to find an exercise that I would love doing. I guess running was a good fit because I look forward to it everyday. I know I would not have been this successful without the awesome support of everyone on this forum. All of the veterans who still post here and others, @Berry78, walking this same journey. We are all different, but have the common goal of getting healthy and changing our lives for the better. Where are you @Sweet as peaches? I miss you and would love to hear how you are doing. Now onward to the next goal. I want to hit 155 and run a half marathon. The truth is I will be happy if I never lose another pound, but I want to keep getting better with my fitness. Happy Saturday everyone!!! Be Blessed!!! -
Alright, this post was inspired by the discussion about "intuitive eating". Ok, so 70% of residents of the United States are overweight or obese now. Mexico is similar, and although other industrialized nations are lower, they also have a significant problem. This statistic is derived from BMI tables, which are frequently inaccurate. The following study shows what I mean. Keep in mind it is looking at obesity, not overweight. http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0033308 Ok, so if you look at the fun graph (that I stole from some skinny skater) the lines show obesity. If the BMI line were moved to 25, then the picture becomes more clear. Basically, guys can be "power lifters", when women aren't, and women can be "skinny fat", when guys aren't. (Rare exceptions) What that means, is there is a higher percentage of over-fat women than the statistics show, and fewer men. In the end, I dunno, it may not change the total. While I'm talking about this chart, what strikes me is how little weight has to do with body fat percentage for women. Some of these women have a 22BMI, but are still 40% fat! There is no BMI that a woman can aim for and be "safe" (maybe under 21?). A guy, on the other hand, if he has a BMI of 25 or less, is almost guaranteed to not be overfat. Ok, so that is all really interesting, but what's the point? Well, back to what I was talking about.. the idea of "intuitive eating". I think our whole country is like a fishbowl, and we're little fishes swimming around in it. If you are a fish in a fishbowl, you'll be wet, right? But what if there was something wrong with the water? Everyone would be wet and have something wrong. How can you swim around in your little fishbowl and NOT get wet and NOT have something wrong? You'd have to don a waterproof space-suit type thingy, right? Then you are insulated against the poison water and do your own thing. THIS is why there are so many diets, nutrition plans, intuitive eating, organic, gluten free, keto, low fat, high fat, low carb, high starch.. etc. etc. Everyone is trying to don a spacesuit to escape whatever the heck is going on in that bowl!!! The spacesuit salesmen all are touting how wonderful their spacesuits are, and how you'll be dryer than your buddy, and have greater freedom of movement... etc. etc. ... you get the point. I don't know what's wrong with the "water", but there is definitely something wrong. We are all on this board because we are going the "seal one gill up with superglue" route. At first, breathing in the toxins through one gill only gives us half the poison. Cool! But we're still breathing poison, and it will catch up with us eventually if we don't make other changes. What do y'all think? Is there something systemically wrong with our country (western civilization)?

Anyone with a low BMI (30-33) had sleeve surgery or will be?
desertdivalv replied to SD123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5'2" and have a BMI of 32, an I am scheduled for surgery 11.17.17. I am insulin resistant, suffer from metabolic syndrome, PCOS, and pre-diabetic. I did not come to this decision lightly, but I have yo-yo'd for many years (Phen-Fen, HCG, Weight Watchers, Keto) you name it, I've tried it, and the weight always comes back. I personally think that this is going to be much less detrimental to my health in the long run than some of the past options I've tried, and not to mention the constant ups & downs. My husband does not think that I need it, but is 100% supportive of my decision. I am ready to take charge of my life. -
It sounds like a junk food - high calorie, low/no nutrition; it may be keto/paleo "compliant" but still a junk food - think paleo Twinkie, and do you really want to get in the habit of eating these? Protein, particularly meats and other firm proteins, tend to be the most satisfying longer term for hunger, and cravings are usually best controlled either nutritionaly (you're craving foods with nutrients that you are short on) or by limiting foods that trigger cravings, whether they be carbohydrate or fat based. Your classic junk carbs like chips, cookies and other sugary things fit that description, but many are also triggered by fat based foods like nuts or cheeses. It's an individual thing that you need to figure out for yourself - what triggers one person may have no effect on you, and vice versa.

Miss Robin is at goal, so she gets peanut butter. For anyone wanting to keep losing... fill up on non-starchy veggies. Don't add fat unless you're keto. My favorite way of preparing veggies.. Uncooked: pick up a tomato or bell pepper and eat it like an apple. Cooked: boil things like green beans and broccoli in an inch or two of water (covered). When its pretty much done cooking, let the water cook off and the veggies brown (not burn). It caramelizes the naturally occuring sugars and yum yum. I frequently don't even have to add water to frozen veggies cooked this way. ... maybe not as healthy as lightly steamed, but I'll eat a bunch more of it and not feel deprived.

This is probably due to ketosis. You're not taking in carbs, and so you're in keto mode -- I had HORRIBLE dry mouth during keto, and also the weirdest smell (my body, my spit, my mouth...everything smelled weirdly sweet). Once my calorie intake went up a bit, it chilled out again.

I could use your prayers/uplifting thoughts/positive vibes
DropWt4Life replied to mi75's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I wish you the very best in this difficult part of your journey. Remember to not eat at least 2 hours before lying down for bed, and stay away from spicy foods. I have found that taking 2Tbsp. of Apple Cider Vinegar every morning has helped to the point to where I don't need Prilosec anymore. I have been taking it for about 6 weeks now. Maybe it could help lessen your symptoms. Also, you don't need to do a keto diet to start losing weight. You just need to let go of the soft drinks and junk food/processed food/fast food. That should help you. Try to get some lean protein and veggies each meal followed up by some healthy snacks. I like to make my own P3 snacks, like raw almonds, Monterey jack cheese, and turkey slices. If you really want to get the weight back off, you are going to have to change your lifestyle and relationship with food back to something more healthy and balanced. Not an easy thing to do, especially with the added stress of school. You can do it though. Just take it 1 day at a time. If you still have your restriction, your tool can still help you. I hope that you are able to solve these problems without the need for another surgery. I believe that you can do it. -

Sending thoughts and prayers! Have you had your gallbladder checked? Keto doesn't have to be all fat all the time, but a little bit of fat shouldn't make you miserable. If you've got gallstones or gallbladder problems, it can cause problems digesting fat. As for the reflux, sleeves can make that much worse, and I've heard of plenty of people needing revisions from a sleeve to a gastric bypass for that very reason. Hope you get some answers soon! -
Many of you probably don't 'know' me from these forums, but I have been around for several years. i'm almost 4 years post VSG. I have struggled through many chapters in my life since my surgery and have regained a good amount of weight. since I carry ALL my weight right around my middle, I look horrible and my self esteem has tanked. Since my surgery I changed jobs and moved, lost a parent, had to change doctors, and gained a master's degree. I'm currently in the final few classes to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. on top of all that, I had managed to lose enough weight initially to be off all my medications-GERD and BP. Now i'm back on both. My GERD has worsened with the weight gain and i'm at the point where I can't lay on my left side if I've eaten within the past few hours because the food and acid will backwash into my throat. i'm miserable. I have been to the psych doc, the NUT, to the surgeon, and to my GP. none of them can give me an exact direction of what to do. my GP says they simply don't know enough about bariatrics to guide me. The bariatric team trialed me on Contrave, I got so sick I had to stop. I tried Keto and spent two days in misery from all that fat. My brain is the issue and I don't know how to get it back under control. I am taking straight Welbutrin for the time being to see if that will help with behavior AND with appetite. my surgeon is very concerned that from the GERD, i'll need a revision. I don't really WANT a revision, I know that the GERD has worsened because I carry ALL my weight in my waistline and it's pushing up on my sleeve- badly. I have an EGD this week with my GI doc which will look at the GERD and also the condition of my sleeve. I have no excuse, the regain is completely my own doing. One day about 20 months ago, I thought that drinking a diet ginger ale at work would be ok, and it has spiraled out of control from there. I am trying badly to get off of soda again, which I think is really the first step. As I walk this very difficult road to get back on the path where I belong, I ask for your prayers, positive thoughts, and vibes.

I never rethought about it, I just occupy myself with things. I'm just starting out, they have put me on something like a keto diet. When I start thinking of food I draw, read, or bug my grand kids. I m sure after I have surgery it may be a bit different
