Post-Election Worries: Thanksgiving Recipes!
OutsideMatchInside replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I am going to be trying recipes from here http://thenourishedcaveman.com/keto-thanksgiving-roundup/ and making some choices. Luckily the people I spend Thanksgiving with are low-carbers too. -
I wanted to introduce my self since I view these forums daily and they have been more than helpful in my young journey so far. A little about my path, at my highest weight late 2019 I found out my scale does not go past 340. Of course, I have yo-yo dieted trying everything from Weight Watchers to Keto but as usual the weight loss happened then came back plus some. I started this latest adventure in September 2020 weighing in at 314 at the start of my required 6-month medically monitored diet and classes. Once completed I was down to 304 at the start of my pre-op liquid diet in preparation for a February 1st, 2021 VSG. On surgery day I was down another 10 pounds to 294. The surgery went fine and so far, recovery equally easy with three realizations. The first realization was that constipation is real and boy figuring out how to manage that one aspect is occupying my daily thoughts. I have tried everything from MiraLAX to Enema’s. So far, the latest attempt to control this seems to be working and that’s 12 teaspoons of Benifiber through out the day and 2 Colace twice daily. But nothing works like a good old fashion cup of coffee in the morning to start things flowing 😊. The second realization has been the mood swings and emotions from the hormones being released from rapid weight loss. Just ask my family, it seems I go from happy to depressed in a matter of minutes and back again. The final realization has been that yes, the stalls are real also. I have been locked into the same general weight for about a week and a half now and couple that with the mood swings, its enough to get you doubting your decision to have the surgery. Thankfully these forums have been a source of resolve and information that has gotten me through this far and helps me stay the course. Today I stand before this forum at 261, 53 pounds down total since the beginning and 33 pounds down since the day of surgery. Hopeful for the continued success as I walk this path and the constant adjustments to eating like knowing when I have had too much or drank too fast. There are far more benefits I have encountered already in my short time on this side of surgery but in an effort to keep a long story from getting longer I will reserve more comments for a future discussion. Thank you to all those who bring experience and honesty in there posts and replies I peruse daily and for those who are struggling earlier on then me, just know it does work if you follow the program and stay connected here.

After much controversy out there on CICO and macronutrients, I spoke to my dr. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ALL OPINION AND NOT FACTS A little background: I have always struggled with my weight since I was a kid. I started dieting as young as 11 years old. After graduating High School I weighed in the 260's and was really unhappy with myself. I had a terrible relationship with food and would go from starving to overeating. I decided to have the sleeve done. I did the sleeve at age 19 in Aug 16, 2017. At first I did great the weight slipped off quickly, but what i didn't realize is that i was losing weight without eating properly. I didn't really track my foods after 6 months and ate whatever I wanted. A little less than 2 years out I realized that I had some regain and again started with yoyo dieting. Instead of dieting I needed to find a new way of living. One of the main things they will tell you out there is to do something you can stick to long term. Otherwise the weight will come back up. What I have decided together with doc: I will aim for 1200-1400 cals a day, minimum 60g of protien and maximum 100g of healthy wholegrain carbs, we discussed carbs for a long time, basically as long as you eat wholegrain healthy carbs and some fruits without going crazy it should not cause me to gain weight. And since I want this to be a lifelong way of living, I have to do something that I can stick too. Although keto in the past has helped me lose weight quickly, I cant stick to it. I will also be adding 1 cheat day every 2 weeks in which I can have up to 1600 cals and must hit my protien goal first.( this is so that there is no food that I can "never have again") Bottom line - I will try to stick to these guidelines and see what happens. I will post weekly updates on how I'm doing. STATS: 5'2" / 28 months PO sleeve / HW 275 / LW since sleeve 165 / CW 176 Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

I had some major regain too and struggled with it for about 18 months. I literally was doing online searches to try and figure out 'how' to lose the regain. I was to the point of desperation. BUT, I was also eating and drinking everything- just in small amounts because, HEY, after all, my sleeve would control the amount I eat right??? After about 40 lbs of regain I got a serious reality check by a doctor who gave me some really sobering health news after having some invasive health tests done. It was THE MOMENT of truth for me. I had to just get OUT of my own head. I KNEW how to do this. I knew what to do. I had to STOP all the nonsense and just get back to what I knew would work. For me, I went strict keto well over 17 months ago and successfully lost all of my regain. I also reversed the health issue. For me, this is what worked. I remain eating <20 carbs a day and will probably do so indefinitely. NOT necessarily because I don't think I can keep my weight down, but more so because of the health issue which responded beautifully (and research supports nutritional ketosis for the problem).

Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*
DonnaGS replied to TheWeightisOvr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh dear, thats discouraging! I'm probably doing the same thing. I lost 20 pounds in the first 6 weeks. When I stay on keto or very low carb, I lose. As soon as I have any bread, wheat, tortilla, I stall out and don't lose anything, even though my calorie count is still under 1000 calories in a day. I haven't lost anything in my second month so far because I ate out and had bread of some sort. What can I say? Before surgery I could lose 1/2 a pound a month, I know I have insulin resistance, it is what it is. Hand in there! At least we aren't gaining! -
I need your input and your help!
Berry78 replied to kristygrem's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
First, you have to really realize that you must be on a "diet" for the rest of your life. If you are working out, it may be a 2000 calorie one (maybe).. but you will always have to watch what you eat. (And don't just watch yourself eat that entire pumpkin pie!). Once you wrap your brain around that fact, then it is time to do the mental work of figuring out what sort of plan will work for you. Each of us must figure out what will work for us LONG TERM. For one, it's keto, another is vegetarian. Then, back to basics.. calorie free beverages, protein first, no drinking with meals, at least 3 meals and a snack each day, no flour or sugar during weight loss. Etc. Track what you eat now to get an idea if how many calories to start with. -
My loss has slowed but I’m not complaining. It’s still going down though. The main thing for me is the fact that I know my body is healthy; the whole reason for me to get the surgery. Not for vanity, although it’s an added bonus. I’m at against keto anything and for sure anything high animal proteins after reading how our bodies react to them in long term. This is not a ploy to scare ya, but I hope you’d be open to the science behind how your body works. The western diet hides these truths because they’re in the money making business. If you are interested, read Proteinaholics by bariatric surgeon Dr garth Davis. It’s really amazing. Science and sources and it’s easy to understand.

Vets- I have been following Keto for about 9 months, lost about 48 lbs. Feeling good. I hate the word 'diet' but want your opinions: I'm thinking about changing it up and going completely back to a post-bariatric type eating- low carb and higher protein. I've been tweaking my diet a bit but don't want to screw myself up. I have 10 lbs that I need to lose before some medical testing in about 4 weeks and wondering if going back to low carb/high protein vs Keto would be more successful (by successful I purely mean burn off some fat)?? thoughts?

I think the dietician is just trying to earn her keep. If you are on point with your protein what else does she have to whine about. I understood that you are supposed to get your protein from shakes during the first 2 phases at least if necessary. I believe when you get to normal food phase, you are only supposed to use them as snacks rather than as a meal so that you get your other nutrients as well. I wonder if we really need the dietician. Mine told me not to use the KETO diet, too much fat. I found so many recipes on Pinterest that are tasty and easy to make. They must all go to the same school because she told me the same thing that someone else was told by hers, "Maybe you could just eat one slice of pizza instead of two." With regards to eggs, my information says "egg whites only" but the nurse at the hospital said I could slip a little yolk in. I'm not a fan of egg white and was informed that I cannot add salsa so I just add cheese, sometimes refried beans. I hate wasting the yolk but I cannot bring myself to buy egg whites in a carton. I am finding that I am adjusting to eating differently though I am looking forward to a week from now when I can eat regular food in small quantities. I am worried though that I will try to eat everything in site so I am trying to think ahead.

Post RNY weight regain, is the keto diet an alternative?
CloudNL posted a topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Hello! I am new here and apologize if this topic is already talked about. I had my GB RNY in 2005, I lost all my extra weight and was at my lower at 55 kg, well that was nice but still too low. As we all did I gained a bit, 58 kg and was stable for 9.5 years but the last 1.5 I am regaining it again, and I am very depressed. I have a personal trainer, walk every day, and eat healthy... so lately I am reading about the Keto diet, I am curious but afraid to gain even more weight. Does anyone here have experience with that diet? -

Nope.... weight loss is weight loss. A sleeve is just a great tool to help you along your journey--but it's just a tool. The science behind good nutritional habits applies to everyone regardless of where you are along your journey. As I said, I am not able to do intermittent fasting or even follow a true therapeutic keto diet because I am only 6 weeks post-op, but if I were 5 years post op and experienced modest weight regain like OP, I would be following a true therapeutic keto diet with intermittent fasting. At that point, if you can consume enough calories to experience weight regain, you can consume enough calories to do keto right and incorporate IF. The science behind keto is there--it's just a matter of whether it's something the OP can comfortably follow. -
I have used protein shakes in the past for supplementation and I like the Unico brand, lots of flavors and meets typical guidelines for protein shakes after surgery. The birthday cupcake flavor has a strong taste of artificial sugar but the chocolate peanut butter and the cookies and cream are my favorite. They have 1g of sugar for all flavors, are keto friendly, and all except one are gluten free. The best part is they have samples you can buy before committing to a huge tub of it. I have had them with water, milk, ice, and blended and they're all good. Muscle milk has some really good flavors as well which you can get just about anywhere. GNC is decent as far as taste but for the price I'd rather go with muscle milk, especially for the ready to drink.

gastric bypass side effects
Joy2me replied to skyewolfe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m sure that’s part of the case too, but I know I’m very restricted to fats (utilize my Nuts minimum) and not a keto diet. Perhaps, many of us don’t have enough fats in our program -
I spent a lot of money on protein but I can't drink any of it
Sammi_Katt replied to DimsumQueen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did the same thing trying to find different flavors I could handle... I ended up giving most of the powders and premades to a friend doing keto. I made my way through pre-op, then used Boost for diabetics while I was post-op until I didn't need to drink protein drinks anymore, and ditched them entirely in lieu of actual food. -
My surgery is scheduled for Feb 23, 2022. My surgeon told me (when I saw him on Jan 11) to do keto until two days before my surgery and then it will be liquids.

Pre-Op Struggling
Arabesque replied to AmazonSleeved's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgical team called the first week of the three shake a day diet hell week. You’re breaking a lot of addictions & food dependencies but you usually just have to get through that first week. I thank God I didn’t have to do it this time (done it a couple of unforgettable times in the past for myself). I had to follow keto for about 2.5 weeks. Good luck. -
Keto is the latest evolution of the low carb craze - Atkins, Zone, South Beach, etc. which emphasizes even greater carbohydrate restriction and higher fat consumption than previous incarnations. "LCHF" (low carb, high fat) and Paleo diets are kissing cousins. Clinically, such diets are used for minimizing weight loss for non-WLS gastrectomy patients and regaining unwanted lost weight.

A normal day of food post op?
BigSue replied to TrueNorth1's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I'm 4.5 months out. I eat 3 meals per day and no snacks (except 3 calcium chews per day for a total of 45 calories). My meals are typically 100-200 calories each and I typically eat 500-600 calories per day. If I'm low on protein for the day, I'll drink a protein shake or protein hot cocoa in addition to the meals. My meals are about half a cup each, a little more if there's lettuce because I figure that by the time I chew it up, it loses a lot of volume. Breakfast examples: Half container of triple zero yogurt with half a scoop of protein powder, raspberries/strawberries or PB2, keto granola or nut clusters Scrambled egg with 1/2 ounce cottage cheese, turkey sausage link Protein pancake with strawberries/raspberries and whipped cream Half packet of protein oatmeal with 1/4 scoop of protein powder, walnuts, and shredded carrots 4 ounces cottage cheese with nacho cheese seasoning Lunch: Protein bar if I'm at work; otherwise, same as dinner Typical dinner: Mexican casserole (chicken, cauliflower rice, salsa, black beans, cheese, plain greek yogurt) Salad with chicken and light dressing, topped with crushed Quest protein chips Chicken salad (shredded chicken, plain Greek yogurt, ranch seasoning), lettuce, tomato on half a 1 net carb tortilla with 1/4 ounce cheese White chicken chili Taco bites (shredded chicken, salsa, black beans, lettuce, tomato, plain Greek yogurt on Quest protein chips) Ricotta bake with turkey meat sauce Chicken or pork with sugar-free BBQ sauce, green beans -
I’m in Tiajuana right now. Have my VSG tomorrow. Very excited, not really nervous. Time to start this new life. I quit caffeine a couple months ago and dreaded giving up my decaf coffee with cream, didn’t think I could do it. Started clear liquids yesterday, no problem. No problem today either. It’s all in the head. I had to do the 1 week pre op diet but I actually started it about 2 weeks ago and then got perfectly strict 9 days ago. Keto stripped my urine this morning and it was large meaning I’m in Ketosis which is very good because it means my liver has used up all the glycogen stores. I’ve been hungry these past two days due to the liquid diet and when my stomach starts grumbling I just down some jello and hot tea or my lemon water. Just an FYI for everyone when you do the liquid pre-op, absolutely make sure you get bone broth which has 10 grams of protein. Protein is Very important for preventing muscle wasting, promoting healing and keeping you a little bit fuller.

Oh, and I'm scheduled for 6/17. (RNY - was gonna do sleeve but I decided on the RNY after talking a lot with my nutritionist and doing research) Was supposed to be May 4th, but was postponed due to COVID-19. I was feeling pretty hopeless that entire month and a half when it was cancelled (cancelled late march..), so I gained some weight. Luckily, my surgeon said no more weight gain and we can still do the surgery. My insurance doesn't have any requirements but the 6 month weigh ins. I'm 16 days away and I"m pushing myself with eating more veggies, more protein and drinking more water. It's stuff I've done before, because I lost ~80lbs on Keto a year and some change ago, but gained it all back. I figured this time, I can do all those changes I made w/keto, and the new tool of the surgery and I should be set. 🤞

Pre op diet started Friday 1/13
Jeanniebug replied to Nina35's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Okay, so it is just meats and egg whites. I would suggest that you search for "Atkins Induction Recipes". That's what this list looks like, to me. Make sure that it's the Induction phase. You're going to be thrown into ketosis. I would suggest that you add an electrolyte supplement to your diet, to minimize keto flu symptoms. Personally, I use the Mio sport drops in my first glass of water everyday. -
