OK guys!!!! I started Keto 2 weeks ago and would love to have a forum of just Fellow Ketoers!! We can trade recipes, stories, question, concerns etc. Keto stuff is all over the internet...but nothing about doing it after WLS. I use My Fitness Pal to track all food/drink, calories, carbs, fats. I currently stay until 12g carbs per day, 60g Proteinand 27g fat. I use Ketostix every morning to make sure I stay in Ketosis ( usually a 4) but I don't feel I'm losing quick enough. What is your experience so far with Keto and your daily intake of foods? It's just so hard for me to get in enough calories and protein.

Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017
Losebig replied to Mary Stokley Gromer's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on 12/12 and had a hiatal hernia repair. Tomorrow Im' 7 days post surgery. For whatever reason I've had a tough time of it and was originally hospitalized for 2 nights and then after being home for a little over 12 hours had to rush back to the hospital via ambulance due to complications. Luckily nothing serious and after another 2 nights in the hospital I'm ok. I think that due to the hernia repair I have a lot of swelling and was unable to get anything down - including pain meds, which spiraled into a bunch of bad things. A few days ago I would have said this was a huge mistake - now I think it was a good choice and I can see the weight falling off already. Doing much better now and today is the first day I'll Come close to my protein and water goals. I'm down around 15 lbs from the surgery and 25 total so far, getting a daily walk in and otherwise doing decently. The pain levels are still high (mostly the hernia I think), but already feeling better. My tongue is a bit white, anyone see that? Doesn't seem to be thrush, some people have said it may be the result of Keto? I do have an appetite, but it's mental so easily ignored. Great to read everyone's stories! -
Could Someone 'Splain This To Me?
jenid40 replied to FluffyChix's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think it has to do with all the different things people pre-op and post-op are eating. I know when I was fresh out so to speak I see all these peiple eating this and that and think will that work for me and proceed to try it. Be it keto or Adkins or high fat low carb...so many different "diets" to still try and be on. We are so used to being on "diets" we are still trying to find what "works for us" instead of sticking to what the Dr said would work for us...its a mibd thing not that people are not learning there just seeing what may work for someone else and try that then when it don't we feel like we have failed. Its just getting into the right mindset. Imo anyway and yes I have been there even 15 months out... Sent from my LGMP260 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Serious COLD FEET!!!!!

Nice. Feels good to know I'm waiting on my spa day Also a huge +1 to everyone who has shouted out Dr. Weiner's videos. His videos are the first resource that made me feel I could actually permanently change my eating habits and actually enjoy it and gain the great health that comes with eating a diet largely based on plants. For a long time I assumed I'd have to be keto after surgery and I have never enjoyed that type of eating. In addition to all that, he breaks everything down to the nitty gritty, science-wise, so you can really understand and soak up the information. Those videos are wonderful! -
so you've been losing (slowly of late i'm sure) for these two years, and hit a low, and now you've started to gain? everything i've read and been told says that after you reach your lowest weight, it IS NORMAL to gain a bit before your body settles at its long-term maintenance weight. i wouldn't freak out if i were you, though i understand the tendency. i would focus on eating very, very cleanly. super healthy food with an emphasis on vegetables and protein. do NOT starve yourself, go hungry, or for gods sake start something extreme like keto. you are doing great and so far everything that's happened to you is quite normal.

Wondering if the Keto diet is a good idea, any thoughts?

I'm definitely cooking with olive oil, eating peanut butter (although very sparingly ) because I can give up carbs but I NEED those healthy fats

After surgery your body can be thrown into ketosis. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. When the body does not have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fats instead; this results in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body. According to the internet: The most typical source of energy used by the body is glucose. This is typically derived from carbohydrates, where the digestive system breaks down complex sugars into simple glucose molecules. On very low carb diets, however, the body is unable to utilize such a fuel. Instead, the liver utilizes the fat present in the body as an energy source, producing “ketones” in the process(2). This is known as “ketosis” – and is the process from where keto diets get their unusual name. These ketone bodies come in three common forms; acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone(3). In large quantities they are removed from the body in the urine or through exhalation. Ketones can have quite a characteristic smell; they often make the dieter’s breath smell quite sweet and fruity, quite distinct from typical halitosis. Excessive volumes of acetone, however, can smell rather different. Acetone on the breath is most commonly likened to the smell of nail varnish remover(4). Protein Excess A second possible cause of ketosis breath isn’t directly linked to the breakdown of fat as a fuel source. Instead, it is a side issue caused by typical changes to the diet. As those on keto diets try to minimize the consumption of carbohydrates, so the diet is often filled with other constituents; most typically fat and protein. A diet that is high in protein can have two impacts on breath. Firstly, the breakdown of protein in the body produces ammonia; this can lead to urine or breath smelling particularly strongly. If your breath has started to smell like a cat litter tray while on a ketosis diet then this may well be your culprit! Standard bad breath is most commonly caused by bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria breaks down its food, producing volatile sulphur compounds (“VSCs”). It is interesting to note that studies suggest that the most common source of VSC production is the breakdown specifically of protein, as opposed to other food sources. Higher protein diets, especially in the absence of suitable oral hygiene, can also therefore impact one’s breath. Some advise to normalize this condition are: Drink plenty of water. Rinse your mouth with an anti-bacterial oral rinse. Consider the use of calorie-free and carb-free mints or gum, or use a flavoured oral preparation such as a mint-flavoured breath spray or mouthwash. One of the other suggestion it seems you are already doing. Studies suggest that cleaning the tongue is almost twice as effective as brushing alone at removing bad breath. As a result, investing in a tongue scraper can be a worthwhile exercise. Ketosis often causes increased urination. This diuretic effect is due in part to your glycogen stores being emptied. Also known as “water weight,” one gram of glycogen necessitates around 3 to 4 grams of water in storage. This mass exodus of surplus fluids (aka pee) can cause dry mouth, and increased sensations of thirst. One of the other conditions that I encountered after weight loss surgery was dry mouth. I found that Biotène® Dry Mouth Oral Rinse helped with this condition.

Hi All, I had a gastric band for 8 years and I had to have it removed in September due to a port infection. I am hoping to have a gastric sleeve done, but it could be a while before I am accepted into the program due to long wait times. Since my band removal, I have followed a healthy diet (better than I didn't while having the band as I can now eat proper protein and vegetables!). But my body has metabolically repented and have gained 50lbs in 2.5months despite my best efforts. For those who were waiting for their sleeve..... what did you do before your surgery to keep your weight in check? Is there any special diet you followed or found useful? Weight watchers, low carb, keto, etc? I could really use some help.

Has anyone tried the Ketogenic lifestyle after RNY
FluffyChix replied to WV_Chef's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Pre-surgery a modified yes. I'm post menopausal and if I were at ideal weight, I might add more fat just to keep me from losing more...if my pouch could tolerate it. But after surgery, I'm looking forward to the day when I can lower my carbs again to a keto level. I'm eating between 40-60g of net carbs per day--all from low glycemic sources. But hunger has woken up! I do better in a 20-40g net range which is def. keto. I just believe that being keto is a broader range than the narrowly focused 80% fat. From all of my studies, it can be as low as 60% to get your to keto and that is very doable for most of us. No fat bombs. No fat coffee. No artificial stimulation of fat ingestion...just normal eating of food will get your there along with the reduction in carbohydrate. It's where our macros just almost naturally shake out when you drop carbs and eat full fat dairy. -

Having issues with losing weight for insurance
atwoah replied to atwoah's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’ve been drinking lots of water. Also I’m hypothyroid so the nutritionist has me on lower carb but not keto. Do you think resistance would be better than cardio? Just worried about gaining weight due to muscle. Just wondering how to make sure I weight the lightest I can at my weigh ins. What did you do to lose the weight? Thanks so much for your help. -

how much water are you drinking. Instead of Zumba try some resistance stuff that will burn more calories. do keto it will come off fast. get a scale to weigh the food should help u loose at least 15 pounds quick. When do you do the liquid diet? -
So i go for the seminar next week and i cant wait to get things started. Something that is so frustrating to me right now is the amount of food i eat to get full. I was so envious of other people eating and get full so quick i have never ever ever been like that. I wish i was I feel like a bottomless pit and it is beyond frustrating. even when eating clean or keto or whatever Portion Control is what destroys everything i work so hard for would go down the drain. I need this tool to help me so bad. I have medicaid and im hoping the pre stuff will go smooth for approval i work in healthcare and insurance companies can be butts! I just cant wait to start my journey.

While I think the study is vague and poorly designed, I think breakfast is still hugely important for WLS patients. I know theres a reason that many weight loss programs usually include something along the lines of avoid going more than 5 hours without eating/drinking. Considering that if youre sleeping and eating dinner at reasonable times, youre probably looking at a solid 10-12 hours of not eating from the time you had dinner to waking up. I think balancing your macros/nutrition adequately after WLS becomes substantially more difficult if you dont have breakfast. Even if its just a protein shake. Otherwise its going to get you into a cycle of starving and binging to catch up, which cant be good for the long term success of your WLS, and thats in addition to the previous mention of getting adequate and optimal nutrition. The argument for/against breakfast in non WLS patients is probably far more complicated, especially once you factor in all these gimmicky things like IF KETO and all that ****. But with WLS patients I think the benefits of having breakfast are clear cut

So I will have my surgery on the 18/12 I see a lot of you have Protein goal and all i have is to do 25% protein 50 % vegetable 25% grains... They are mostly saying just do the Canadian eating guide.... From what I noticed a lot of post-op do keto or count calories, the guide I have from my surgeon is well... pretty bad Here are all my guidelines op day: Water or ice only day 1 to 4: water, clear broth, fruit juice (unsweetned and with water added), Jello (no precision if sweet or no sugar) day 5 to 8: cereals with milk (1 or 2%), fruit (mashed) day 9 to 15: cereals, white toast without crust, egg, chicken, fish with a light sauce (bechamel, tomato) veggies (all mashed of course) day 16 to 30: egg, cheese less than 20% fat, lentils, soft fruit, fish, chicken, ground meat 31 + regular / tender food. ground rule is: 3-4 part of milk and substitute 1 fruit portion, 2-3 vegetable portion 3 portion of bread/grain etc 2-3 portion of meat and substitute until i get to the numbers for the canadian eating guide ..... So do you guys think I should follow this guide or try to hit some macros?

Question for WLS veterans
JohnnyCakes replied to psyance's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
low carb, yes - good and sustainable. keto? NO. do not start with that. unsustainable, unnecessary, and damaging in the long run. i know you are in ketosis now, largely bc of the sharp calorie decline and your body utilizing so much stored fat for energy. but seriously do not start with the eating 80% fat thing. not because fat is bad for you, it’s not, but because you should not begin ANY eating plan that you can’t sustain for the rest of your life. because guess what happens when you get off of it. yep, weight gain regain. i follow a generally low-carb (under 50g carbs per day), whole foods diet. kinda paleo, kinda Mediterranean, but always REAL FOOD. makes it all quite simple. -
FluffyChix, I haven't had any other blood work besides the usual ones. I can list them and maybe you can tell who knows. LOL This is what my Bariatric Dr ordered: HEMOGRAM, CMP, B-12, VIT D(Hydroxy) THIAMINB1 (whole) FERRITIN LEVEL PTH, FOLATE. All my tests have come back great, in fact, my VIT B I had to cut back on because it was high. LOL , In fact, I just went to the Dr today and she was pretty impressed. All except my liver enzymes. She said I have the non-acholic fatty liver disease. Which strikes me as kind of funny because even my Bariatric Dr never mentioned it before. Maybe it's my nuts. LOL I wonder how hard it would be to get my DR to do some more tests? BTW Miz Fluffy I don't think it is KETO breath because I don't do the diet. I tried to do it and the lady that set us up said the recipes were included and if we did all of our prep for the week it would really help. Well, she set up my Micros etc but you see I am at my goal weight and wanted to help my hubby, I do not like many leftovers per say and the stuff she gave us recipes for I couldn't even stand the smell of them. Hubby did give it a try but the food wasn't to his liking either. Wham to our checkbook AGAIN. LOL

Electronic weight loss program recommendations?
Healthy_life2 replied to CaliforniaCandy's topic in The Lounge
Myfitnesspal. I'm old school. It tracks food. Graph shows your progress. Helps meet and see if you hit your calorie and macronutrient goals (protien etc) Tracks your exercise including syncing fitbit, map my run or map my walk...I'm sure their are more, It will graph for the week or month of meeting your calories and macros. You can leave your food log open for others to see, Or keep it private ( I keep mine open.) At the end of the day you submit and it tells you if everyday was like today you would weigh (calculates what you would weigh based on your food and exercise) gives me motivation to stay on track. It also has a forum for many categories bariatrics, vegan, keto, fitness weightlifting etc. you can friend and message.....They are amazing people that are motivated inspiring, and positive. -
December 2017 Gastric Bypass!
FarmMomma replied to 823freckles's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey all! I had my RNY December 1st and came home yesterday. Would love to have some surgery support buddies! I’m 31, 5’5”, and started at 286 lbs. surgery day weight was 281, and I’m already down to 271 as of this morning. My doc has me on liquids until 1 week post op, then I start protein shakes. My my reason for having the RNY was my PCOS. I’m active, eat healthy (keto for 3 years with minimal weight loss), but because of my PCOS, the weight never goes anywhere. I’m a nursing student and mom to a 4 year old and 2 year old. Hubby took the week off to take care of me, and I’m recovering well. Little to no pain, sleeping well, a little soreness, but overall dong wonderfully. Good of luck with surgeries this month! -
Almost a year out and scared...
FluffyChix replied to Lulu_RNY's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There are some pretty awesome keto/low carb bloggers out there with sugar free sweets that rival the real thing. While you still have the metabolic advantage going of your honeymoon period, I'd sure check them out though, and see if you can find "healthy-er-ish" alternatives. Cuz God, that would be terrifying to gain all your weight back, just because you can't not eat sweets after dinner! I keep reading at some point, our appetite does come back, and that our ability to eat more increases with time too...I'm pretty terrified I will change my anatomy, be able to lose it all, then because I won't stay diligent enough, will gain some or all of it back! So I'm working like a one-armed-paperhanger to try to build new, healthy habits. Two of those things involve breaking up permanently with sugar and also breaking up with crunchy, carby, salty snacks. ((hugs)) And glad it's working for you right now!! -
I'm very confused by both your post. They seem either irrelevent or that you have confused what the op is saying. This individual is not keto. He is a new bariatric paitent so what has that got to do with anything? Your point is don't be afraid of fat ? Why make that point that poster did not tell anyone to be afraid of fat. All she said to the guy is follow your plan as if we are meant to have protein first how is 60% of a meal being fat following the plan. She didn't say not to have healthy fat with healthy protein. But you definitely agree with the poster so what is your point then ? I am so confused your responses are like your responding to a post I can't see. Sent from my Vivo 5R using BariatricPal mobile app
