    Time to start losing weight

When I started my six month insurance required pre-op diet program, I decided to jump in the deep end of the pool and get started right away. I followed a keto way of eating and lost 100 pounds by the day of my surgery. It was the best thing I did for myself other than having the surgery. I have continued to follow that way of eating for almost 2 years now (including through the food stages -- I had to do an extra week of liquids post-op because I wouldn't eat cream of wheat and oatmeal. Lol.) I am below goal and have been maintaining for months. I'd suggest finding a way of eating that you believe can be sustainable for you. I can't imagine where I'd be now if I hadn't done all that hard work on the front end of surgery. Good luck!
  2. I am meeting with my surgeon on Tuesday but his nurse practitioner told me to already start losing weight. Problem is I don’t know what meal plan to use. Keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, ???? I am not sure where to start. I still have a few months at least until my surgery, but I want to get a jump on it. Any advise from those that have done this would be appreciated.
  3. So sorry for my late reply ... I went to doctor , was not keto rash , my potassium was 1.4 and it should be 3.5. White tongue also from potassium issues . Resolve was two IVs with two potassium IV cocktails , and oral potassium they had me drink. Rash clearing up 😊
  4. Thank you so much for your input! I’ve been itching to reply all week but was having trouble logging on to BP. Anyway, I decided to follow your advice and consult with my Doctor. As I said they arent as great with giving detailed information on nutrition but this time they took their time with me on the phone and explained everything. They said if I’m going to be spending more than 300-400 calories per day on exercising (and I definitely burn 2-3x that amount accordinf to my fitbit), I definitely needed to up my calories. So they cleared me for 1,600 calories when working out,140g of protein (as long as I drink a lot of water to protect my kidneys), and the 36g of fat but said absolutely no more than 100g of carbs/day which made a lot of sense to me. My trainer said she can work with that. I’m going to try it for a week and see how that goes but will follow your advice and monitor closely. If I start to gain weight I’ll go back to keto for sure.

Speaking of fad diets ... everyone wants me to try the keto diet. Fad diets don't work - they come and go. The real success is actually with people that have used surgery as a tool. The keto diet ain't real good for you either - it's terribly high in fat. The studies point to about a 65% success rate. That's a little bit more than 1/2 people keeping weight off long term. I am done with the fad and the yo-yo.
  6. I'm 6 months post op and have been dealing with a really annoying stall forever. I'm not complaining because at least it's not moving up but I've been working out almost every day and eating pretty well—I average ~1,000 calories and ~100g of protein/day following a mostly keto diet, though if I wanted to I could certainly eat more. I feel satisfied but not restricted and I tolerate literally EVERYTHING. Anyway, I just hired an INCREDIBLE trainer that Im really excited about! She is a world champion athlete, has a SOLID reputation, and a background in nutrition. She was honest with me that she isn't super versed in bariatric patients. My Dr.'s staff hasn't given me great info regarding nutrition either so I'm kind of on my own there. I will be doing intense physical activity 5 days a week and my trainer wants me to try to eat 1,600 calories/day. How in the world I'm going to fit all that in? I don't know! She told me to try having more frequent meals, like 8 per day. She's also changing up my macros drastically, at least for the first 2 weeks, by reducing fat intake and upping my complex carbs: 1,600 calories, 140g protein, 180 carbs, 36g of fat. Has anyone started a rigorous workout regime a few months out from surgery? Were you able to eat enough calories to sustain it? And most importantly, should I even be eating more carbs than protein? I'm like, scared to mess around with that stuff now! lol Thanks for any advice you can offer!
  7. All of the folks in my life who have regained (which is almost all of them) never changed any behaviors and went right back to eating how they ate (and drank) pretty quickly after the surgery. (While they claim they eat smaller portions, those portions grew and grew as time went on, and the frequency of eating did as well...) Yes, they lost weight at first, but with the exception of my mom (who is still probably 50-60 pounds below her highest weight), everyone else gained back EVERY SINGLE POUND. I'm like you. I put my body through too much trauma to gain any weight back. Not even 10 pounds. Food is not that important in my life any more, thank goodness. I'll just stick to my keto way of eating and my 2000 calories. That formula will not fail me. @jenn1, congratulations on your success and maintenance!

Yes my taste buds have changed. I’m part Italian so bread and pasta used to be a staple for me. I have no desire for bread and little for pasta. Except I did have Gnocchi at Christmas time. Lol. I love fish so that’s a plus with trying to do keto. Once I reach my goal I will reintroduce carbs and treat myself. Everything in moderation.
  9. I find all of the research and statistics to be interesting; however, I still believe that it comes down to an individual's commitment and perseverance to changing his/her relationship with food and finding a way of eating that is sustainable and that supports maintaining and healthy weight more so that which procedure he/she chooses. I weighed 400 pounds when I started my journey. I never wanted the bypass and insisted on the sleeve from the very beginning. While the NP did talk statistics, she and the surgeon were very supportive. I have lost over 100% of my excess weight (I am below goal), and have maintained for several months beautifully. There is no reason to think will regain because I have no intention of not following a keto way of eating, and I always keep my calories below 2000. In my experience the people that don't lose their excess weight and/or regain do (or don't) do so because of the choices they make around food and drink. I realize that there are exceptions to this, but that has been the case so many times on BP and is definitely the case with most of the people I know that have had one procedure or the other. Still, I do find the research interesting...

I've noticed that the post-post-op diet (that's how I think about the way after LOL) is like a keto or whole30 diet. Which is great. I followed whole30 for about 60 days a few years ago and found it very helpful. Did you notice that your tastebuds changed after surgery? Many of the people that I have talked with post-op (my mom, friends, co-workers) have said that as time has gone on they find themselves craving different things like shrimp, crab, various other proteins, instead of sugars and carbs.

For me when I noticed how much better I was feeling and looking it became more important than what I love, to eat. Lol. I changed the way I look at food. It is now something to keep me alive and not a crutch. Don’t get me wrong I still like to eat but I’m making better choices and keeping junk food away so I’m not tempted. Look up keto recipes there are tons of them. Plus keep easy meals on hand so if you’re ever in a hurry you don’t grab something bad for you. Hope this helps. Good luck and stay strong!

    Need advice...trail half marathon

First off, let's address the carbs. You don't necessarily need them to run a race. I'm keto and I run 44 minute 10k's. It isn't as big as everyone thinks. You need healthy sources of fats, proteins and I would throw in some legumes. Stay away from expanding carbs like bread, rice, pasta or oats. They will only bloat you. The morning of you need simple energy like peanut butter, protein and a bit caloric glucose like blueberries or a banana. It really helps to keep you burning fat throughout the race so your energy levels remain stable. Secondly, I would recommend some kettlebell training to keep your knees from taking too much punishment prior to the race. Sprinting will go a long way but keep the sprints at 70 meters or less. Then take 3 minutes and repeat until your time drops below 3 seconds of your 2nd round of sprint. Every other day, walk fast, almost on the cusp of a jog but not quite. Go for 7 minutes and 30 seconds. Then, turn back and match that pace. The goal is to go out further every time. Olympic trial runners use this same technique to build endurance and consistency. I have used it myself with success and on clients who have been overweight and had bad knees. Go get some!

    I cheated on pre-op diet

Huh, I've never heard that part about ketosis. I thought the purpose was calorie restriction to induce visceral fat loss around the liver. I know you can maintain ketosis long-term on up to 50g of carbs but usually it's recommended to stay under 20g to induce it for the first time. Many protein shakes and bars contain sufficient carbs to total more than 20g, right? My diet in particular is 5 shakes OR 4 shakes, 1 bar OR 3 shakes, 2 bars. I could stay at 25g carbs if I did all five servings from Premier Protein shakes. But if I added, for example, just one Pure Protein bar, that's 15-25g just right there, plus 20g for the 4 shakes. It's been several years since I was interested in keto so maybe the recommendations or guidelines have changed.

    Keto diet

For one example... My brother-in-law has been doing the keto diet mostly for over a year (did not have bariatric surgery). He lost 100lbs on it and is keeping it off. Also he used to be on cholesterol lowering drugs but he now has his cholesterol in check and doesn't need them anymore. His BP is also great. I can't figure out why so many people bash this diet. Just because it goes against the thinking that we've all been taught (low fat) for years doesn't mean it's wrong. When he talk to his doctor about it, his doctor told him just keep doing whatever you're doing because it's working great for you. I don't know how us "sleevers" would do on it since we now have a modified stomach, but if in a years time if I don't hit my goal weight with the diet my dietitian recommended, I'm going to try it for sure.
  15. I wanted WINGS!!!!! Is like we are alcoholics....and there alcohol EVERYWHERE and we can't drink it. The smells are amazing when we can't eat anymore of it. Honestly, we are addicted to carbs, candy sweets...and now we made a decision COLD TURKEY to not eat it again. I will never judge anyone with addictions again. It takes a great deal of strong will to stop eating the things we loved. Then again, our stomach is so small that we couldn't eat more then 2 oz at the time.lol....I am 3 weeks post surgery. I miss the wings..but I am going to try the Keto diet...all the bread free wings I can fit in three oz belly!!

    Keto diet

I admit I'm no expert on the differences between keto and a typical low-carb diet. I think some doctors imagine a low carb diet as one eating 12 pounds of bacon a day...lol. You can still do low carb and not go crazy on high fat foods. Keeping my carbs low has always been best for me although I'm not the biggest fan of it. I seem to notice a bigger increase in weight loss if I keep it to 50g or less a day. Usually it means lots of lean protein (chicken & tuna are my main go-tos) and I stick to lower carb veggies.

    Keto diet

I do a modified keto. Meaning I do not do the high fat, yet I do very low carb and the high protien that is required by my nutritionist. this also helped. https://www.bariatriceating.com/2017/03/bee-keto-bariatric-plan/

    Keto diet

I was reading about some sleevers who have had a lot of success with the Keto diet and I was thinking of doing some research about it. I thought it would be something I'd like to try. I called my surgeon today and asked their nutritionist her thoughts on it, and she said DO NOT DO THE KETO DIET because it's a fad and not good for a sleeve patients because it's high in fat and it could really cause damage. Are there any sleevers here who follow keto?

    It’s NOT a DIET!

I follow a low carb/high protein/high healthy fat way of eating and have done so for the past almost 2 years (including the food stages post-op). To many, this is a keto diet; to me it is a permanent way of life. I have no intention of bringing carbs or sugar back into my life at any point. I worked hard to make food nothing more than fuel, and I am going to continue to live that way. (I know that this approach isn't for everyone, but it has helped me to lose 225 pounds and beautifully maintain that loss...) I look at the word diet as "how I eat," and not a program to lose weight. I don't need to lose weight anymore.
  20. Just an observation, as I have no actual experience in your situation, if meat based fats are tolerable, it sounds like lactose intolerance maybe? Have you tried taking some pre-/probiotics? Have you been tested for gut bacteria or h pylori bacteria? The gut is a fascinating, complex, and annoying organ. If you are worried about getting enough fat to do keto there is coconut oil, avocado, etc. I realize this doesn't let you have beloved yummy dairy for the moment but maybe after you get some probiotics for a few months you will be able to tolerate dairy better.
  21. Hello. I’ve had some success on keto and Atkins type diets in the past and I am curious how they work post op and more than a little nervous to start it up again now since they are basically higher fat and my past probs there...plus I’m only two months + post op. Lil backstory- I had my gallbladder taken out 11/2016 and a year later my body still hasn’t made up its mind on how to process fats (mainly dairy, meat based fats are tolerable) Some days I can totally tolerate minimal dairy (like in my morning coffee or some meat wrapped cheese/pickle meals). Other days I take one sip of my AM coffee and I bolt straight to the bathroom & for the rest of the day- this is low fat, whole milk, half and half or even full on heavy cream. I literally can drink/eat FULL fat one day and get the intestinal freak outs the next! I don’t get it! I had VSG on 10/31/2017 (2.5 mos) and still struggle having dairy back into my diet since I’m pretty much experiencing the same thing. Now I make my one morning coffee with chocolate Premier Protein shake and do OK but still struggle with any other dairy...cheese, low fat sour cream, yogurt...but I WANT TO COOK WITH THIS STUFF! PLUS I NEED THE CALCIUM. Ricotta bake- HELLO! I want to be able to eat that without excusing myself from the table after one bite. Can I do a modified Keto and/or Atkins type eating program that allows me to eat lower fat (mostly dairy) type foods and still be satisfied and lose weight? Maybe less fat and more protein? Is there something like that- toss in some whole greens maybe? I’m earnestly trying and reaching out for help so please don’t give me arrogant attitude. I enjoy most of you but geez the power trips here are sometimes too much...kinda like the trots I get lately many thanks and so much love and appreciation to all of you that offer kind supportive suggestions...Tess
  22. Wow...you guys are brave...donuts? Tamales? Do ritos? Here is am trying to eat sugar free yogurt 😳Popsicles. I tried two bites of extremely moist meatloaf and was sick all night long. I can't even eat tomato soup. The acid of anything even a mashed boiled egg keeps me burping sour nasty burps. The only thing that went down smooth was a protein shake I made with bananas, peanut butter and fat free milk. I am planning on Keto dieting after I heal. If I can take it. Artificial sugars make me so nauseous. I am going nuts hungry and sick of jello, BROTH AND YOGURT! 15 days post surgery. Lost 16 pounds

    Pizza

I’ve tolerated a square of plain cheese thin crust (think cracker crust) pizza from Domino’s, so it’s probably the case that the thinner the crust, the better. Which sucks for me, living in Chicago. When I tried a keto diet last year, my wife made pizza using scrambled eggs for a crust, THAT was tasty.
  24. Thanks for the kind words. I'm an engineer by training, so that probably explains it Haha! Glad that you might be seeing some changes on the scale! It'll come, hang in there. Being precise is just a habit from a million diets I've been on for years, it's also something my NUT has really pushed on us. We're supposed to be measuring everything and logging it (just the amount, food and protein). A food scale helps a lot. I'm also using it as a way to make sure I don't over eat, 4 oz is ok, 5 is serious pain, so I measure carefully! One thing I noticed in the foods you listed is they all have quite a bit of salt. You very well may be retaining some water, so as you switch things up you may see a big drop quick! BTW - the rash may be a Keto rash if you're having very few carbs, got it all down my side - annoying but went away.

    Popcorn 🍿

There's probably no one correct answer for this. I'd ask your surgeon and see what he/she says. It is probably advisable to wait a while post-op to have something with that texture, but there are a lot of variables. Even at 16 months post-op, I still follow a keto way of eating (25g of carbs per day or less), so it would be a solid no for me.
