    Anyone here 60 or older?

Not sure what your coverage is for them but I strongly suggest you talk to your doctor about the GLP-1 if eating different is the cause for regain. Your tool is still there, you most likely just need help switching your diet back and the GLP-1 should take your appetite away almost completely making that a great deal easier. I have a friend that lost all of her weight and was actually losing too much and had to back off of them because she wasn’t getting enough nutrition. I had to keep reminding her to get in her protein and fluids. She has great coverage for them through her work insurance (she pays $25). I actually wanted to do them when I did my revision this year but I didn’t have adequate coverage for them and financially they just weren’t an option so I went for the revision. I talked to my doctor about waiting but she thought it would be a couple years before anything changed in terms of coverage and my labs were creeping up so waiting wasn’t a good idea. I am doing great in terms of weight loss but faced with another medical issue now, the gastro changes I’ve had aren’t making things any easier for me. Losing the weight is for sure the goal but if you can do it without surgery that’s always better. As far as I know revision is for people who gain without any real known reason. You are saying that you’re eating different for an emotional reason so you probably just need help changing back to your better habits both mentally and physically. Honestly, I think the GLP-1 will be the first option for many people in the very near future. They are considered safer at this point. It’s just a matter of them becoming more accessible for people. Take it with a grain of salt but it’s something I would at least consider before jumping to the surgery option.

    Still High Anxiety!!

^ This. Post bariatric surgery eating is really hard! Never let anyone tell you that bariatric surgery is "the easy way out"! Regarding your protein intake, let's start with an understanding of why a protein-first diet is recommended post-surgery: Primarily, we are hoping to stave off something called muscle catabolism. This is when your body basically breaks down your own muscles. This happens mostly but not entirely to meet your daily essential amino acid needs. If we eat enough protein, this significantly reduces the amount of muscle mass your body will burn. That's important because the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, meaning you'll burn more calories even at rest. Most scientific literature suggests that 60 grams per day of protein is sufficient to meet your essential amino acid needs and thus hold off the bulk of the muscle catabolism that happens while on a weight loss diet. Note that some muscle catabolism is inevitable and no amount of protein intake is going to prevent that. The second reason protein is important is because protein is filling and relatively slow to digest. Studies have shown that eating more protein than the 60 grams per day minimum can help you feel more full. That basically will result in reduced overall calorie consumption. For this, amounts between 1.6 grams to 2.2 grams per day per kilogram of ideal body weight have been shown to be effective. For example, if 60 kg was your ideal body weight. protein intake between 96 and 132 grams would be suggested. I'm not sure what your surgical team told you, but since you're already getting over the 60 grams per day minimum, I'd say you're doing fantastic! As you get further out from surgery, you'll probably want to consume more, but keep in mind that all it's really doing is keeping you full longer. It's not going to sabotage your weight loss due to excess muscle loss. TL;DR: You're going fine on protein, don't sweat it.

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

I would wait until you are sure but maybe do the research and know where you want to go or what you want to order so you can start trying them on asap. You will definitely be able to find one you just may have to pay more than you are used to if you are particular on pattern and cut. I had a real hard time when the options were so limited. When I gained weight I said that was one plus was the cups fit in the larger sizes so swimsuits worked. Ironically because I didn’t want to wear them then 😂. Anyways, if you do a search for 34DD and 34DDD swim (just in case) you will see that they are certainly available just not in every brand and style and not always so cheap. Some will come up and when you click on it they are actually sized S, M, L and don’t let them fool you they will not work for you anymore unless its a tie back in which case a too large band won’t be an issue. I just think you deserve the absolute cutest suit (or suits 😉) that you feel like a million bucks in so just don’t put it off until too close to summer and be upset that they are a little harder to find. The one thing you do have going for you is that you shouldn’t need much support so you can wear more styles than I could. That will increase your options some. If you go in person just plan a day you won’t be rushed or a couple shorter trips, Im sure it will actually be fun so long as your not rushed. 🛍️👙🛍️

    Food Before and After Photos

I make a roasted acorn squash last night with chicken for my husband and I and he really liked them. I went the more savory route. My dad makes a stuffed acorn squash recipe that is delicious but might need to be tweaked for newer surgery patients (like me), but I thought I would share since they seem to be a big hit!
  5. I have been on the liquid diet for 6 days and have lost only one pound. I have been using premier protein shakes and bone broth. Is this about cutting sugar or what ? I am frustrated and confused and it is July 4 and I cannot call and ask anyone. My surgery is Monday
  6. Marisa Colosimo

    HELLO…

My name is Marisa. I’m having a gastric bypass surgery on August 7th. I’m starting my liquid diet two weeks before that and quitting smoking. I’m doing this for my health. I’m 60 years old and I’m looking for some encouragement from others who have had this done. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I’m a little bit scared of the change and what I have to intake as protein to fill my daily intake. Is there anyone out there who follows a specific program? Please let me know. Thanks, Marisa.
  7. My cycle is normal, Water intake is the same aas usual. I have never been fantastic with it. However, my protein is out of control LOL like 175g - 225g a day. Do you think its having the opposite effect? I am trying to lean out and build muscle so I eat a ton of protein in small amounts throughout the day. Maybe my 1 coke zero I drink a day? i did figure my implants probably being around 4-5lbs in total?

    Abnormal Post Op Bloodwork Results

This may or may not be an issue at all and it sort of depends on just how high it was and whether some other blood markers were also high. Keep in mind also that these reference ranges for low and high are based on averages across large populations of people. Plus, what constitutes high or low may actually vary depending on the testing company. I think this is important to understand because we as patients see these "abnormal" test results and immediately think something is wrong with us, when in reality it may mean absolutely nothing. As to BUN/Creatinine ratio specifically, note that higher levels of protein can cause this to be elevated. Since we actually want a lot of protein post-surgery, this may not indicate a problem at all. Another common reason for this is simply chronic dehydration. That's not to say dehydration is your issue, but I think it's probably a good idea to assess how much you're drinking and see if there's a way to possibly drink more? Are you actually meeting the recommended fluid amounts your surgical team gave you?

    Let's Talk Sweets! Yummyyyy Goodness

Ahhh thank you for the brownie recipe! Oh, I also make "ice cream" from my protein drinks in my icreami!
  10. HI guys! I am being more strict on my macros till I can work out again, lots of sites and all different outcomes, these are what I have gotten: Macros for Weightloss while not working out: 1838 Calories 167g of Protein 61g Fat 155g Carbs OR 2035 Calories 153g of Protein 79g Fat 178g Carbs Macros for Body Recomposition 2725 Calories 170g Protein 222g Carbs 99g Fat Macros for Weightloss while working out: 2473 Calories 170g Protein 224g Carbs 100g Fat
  11. I admittedly switched to protein water! I find that the shakes are just odd tasting 🤣🤣 As others have said, they aren't really necessary unless you are struggling to hit your protein goals (which happens!). I mostly only drink my protein water when I am working out, or if I have forgotten breakfast (which unfortunately happens more than I care to admit).

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

At some point we all plateau in our weight loss. The thing to do is hit the protein shakes more than you used to. Pretend it’s the earlier stage, where you were limited to protein shakes and almost no carbs. I’ve had to do that myself when I gain weight or plateau. It’s not what we want, it’s what we need to do.

    Surgery

You will be surprised in what happens after surgery. It just melts away sometimes, and other times it takes a lot of work. Sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk. Prioritize protein made from lean healthy meats like chicken or turkey. You got this for sure and there is ample support here, so ask away, share your thoughts and feelings, and you'll get a response for sure. Wishing you the best with your surgery. Oh, and yes, I do not regret having the RNY. Keep those clothes you took that picture with....it will help you in the future when taking pictures in the same clothes.

    2 months post op macros

They probably didn't give you any calorie values because they don't want you worrying about that yet. As long as you're not eating more than the recommended amounts, you'll be fine. As to macros, the absolute minimum recommended protein amount would be 60 grams, but really, shooting for 100+ would be better. It can be hard for some folks to hit that higher value early on, so as long as you're getting a minimum of 60, you should be okay for now. Just try to work up to 100+ as time goes on. Eventually, ~1 gram per pound of bodyweight would be a better target for protein, but I'd be surprised if you're able to get there at 2 months post-op. I wouldn't worry too much about carbs and fats at this point other than to say you do need a bare minimum of fats to make sure you get your essential fatty acids. In short, eat the recommended portion sizes, aspirationally shoot for 100 grams of good quality protein per day, at least 30 grams of (good), fats per day, and the rest can be carbs. Your carbs should ideally be from whole food sources like veggies, grains and fruits.

    August Surgery buddies

You will be able to eat more. As long as you stick to healthy options you will be fine. There isn’t a huge calorie difference between a half a cup of broccoli and even two cups of it. Now if it’s rice or pasta you’re gonna be eating more. Stick to eating extra veggies with your meal or a dry salad (if you like them) before your meal to fill your belly. Also, we don’t have to eat until we are stuffed. We can instead just eat until we are satisfied. Like if you stopped now, would you be full until your next meal or snack? If not you need a low calorie filler.

Am I on the right path?

I’ve been here for 6 years now and I’ve see a variety of protein goal recommendations so I don’t believe there is a right number or a wrong number only what you & your team thinks is best for you. For example I was told 60g was my goal from the beginning. Certainly in the first months when we’re healing and not eating large portions focussing on protein is very important. Now at 9 months, you’re eating more and a greater variety of foods ensuring you’re getting in a balance of all your nutrients is just as important like @spartanmaker mentioned. Maybe this is why your dietician has reduced your protein goal or did they mean 65g is more a minimum goal??? As for should you count calories or other macros, my feeling is you have to do what you feel most comfortable with. Another case of you doing what is best for you & much like what you said about exercising. Focussing on counting calories messes with me so I’ve always done just random checks of calories & portions. I probably was & still am more concerned with specific food choices and ensuring I was consuming some complex carbs, fruit and vegetables every day, reducing added sugars. Though I know others who value the accountability of calorie and macro counting and feel doing so keeps them on track - what’s best for them. @SpartanMaker has given you some fabulous information for you to consider &/or adopt or for more rigorous conversations with your team.

    Meal Prep Ideas

@SpartanMaker I have never personally experienced one but a male friend had one due to the amounts of the mountain dew he consumed and omgsh- A big burley man crying was tough. Now I drink water like a fish! haha! There are days where I eat the 130-140g in protein i.e the weekends when I indulge on not so great stuff lol Speaking of Atkins, I have friends that do strict carnivore and they tried to give me the benefits of it, but the kidney stones and not being able to have bowel movement did not sound appealing!

    Herbalife

Is Herbal life still in business? Gracious. They have had a bit of a controversial history over the years so I would probably avoid them too. There’s a lot of protein shakes available including through here. Sure others will recommend ones they’ve found to be good for quality (& value).
  19. Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?

What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

    2 months post op macros

I was never given macros or calories just portion size recommendations & it came from my surgeon not the hospital. I was told to begin with 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée stage gradually increasing to a cup at 6 months. I was also told 60g protein & keep low fat & low carbs. And I clearly remember my surgeon drawing a picture of a plate and sectioning it off to show the portion of protein, vegetables and carbs on a plate I would be consuming at a meal when I was in maintenance. If you think you’ll feel more comfortable with having more guidance, keep pushing your dietician or surgical team. It comes down to what you feel you need to be most successful.

How to intake more protein and cals

I have the same question and can never get a good answer. I don't mind the shakes I just can't always remember or have the time to stop and do it. I don't even need a bunch of calories just the protein.
  22. I'm reminded of something one of my mentors used to say a lot: "Progress, not Perfection". To me it sounds like you're making great progress! I personally think you need to both celebrate your progress, as well as give yourself some grace for not being perfect, since none of us are perfect. Regarding the certifications, is there a way to get the money some other way? is this the sort of training/certification where school grants or loans would be an option? If not, what about a personal loan? I'm guessing you may have already evaluated this avenue, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case.

  25. Hi guys I was sleeved 2 weeks ago and am due to go onto pureed foods tomorrow. MY main concern is how I am going to get the protein in as I know I will only be able to manage a few mouthfuls at first. Do you have any tips? I have ordered some protein flavoured water power and I am fed up with protein shakes now! I have to be careful what I have because I have suffered with digestive issues and have had to drink more to keep hydrated! Did you have problems with your digestion after surgery, not constipation though Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you!
