Thank you. I didn't have a stent put in. I guess they wanted to try and let my stomach heal on it's own. My mom has been staying with me while I recover and asked to get another test performed since I've had so many complications...just to be sure. My surgeon was against it and I'm wondering if I should push the issue.

Hi all, my name is Lisa. I had the Lap-Band in Monterrey MX in 2003 and had success. I initially lost 100 lbs, but I have gained back 40 of it. I still consider it a success since I have kept 60 pounds off for over 10 years. Last year I started throwing up in the middle of the night, as well as throwing up at every meal. I thought that was just how it was going to be - my insurance didn't cover my surgery and I have tried to get follow up appointments with other doctors in town. Most of them wouldn't touch me without an outrageous "takeover fee." One doc wanted $5K up front before I stepped foot in the office! I finally went to my PCP in April and they set me up with a bariatric doc - since I was having an issue, insurance approved it (I have Sierra Health). Doc said the band was slipped and I also have a hiatial hernia and suggested revision to a gastric sleeve. Well - today my surgery was approved - in 48 hours! Lap band removal, repair of hernia, and revision to sleeve. My surgery date is August 5. FYI - my insurance just changed July 1st. I was told by them that because of Obamacare (PLEASE no political comments!!), that complications because of prior weight loss surgery, whether it was initially covered or performed in the country or not, HAS to be treated as any other illness and all I have to pay is the deductibles as for any other surgery. Yay! So, for those of you who have previously been denied or have not been covered in the past, it might be worth looking into. I was told that the changes went to effect on July 1. Not sure if it effects first time surgery or not, but worth researching!

Hi all......I was sleeved about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I thought I was doing OK....I've been following my diet recommendations and getting in as many liquids as I can. The last 3 days or so, I've been feeling sad and weepy. I have heard that many people suffer from depression after the surgery, but this seems so soon to be feeling blue. Has anyone else experienced this? I am lucky where I haven't experienced any complications thank goodness and my recovery has been smooth.

I wait tables, how long till I can go back to work?
BarrySue replied to sbrainwater's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly, this is not a question you can have the answer to until after your surgery. Some people heal faster, some people feel more soreness, some people have complications, some people are jogging at two weeks (yipe, I wouldn't risk that). My recommendation would be to take six weeks off, and let your employer know there is a chance you may be cleared to return earlier. If you feel better and a doc agrees, you can always go back sooner. As a former waitress, I probably would've had to wait longer to go back to serving than I did at my current job. I think about squatting to pick up glass racks or sweeping under a table and it makes me stomach hurt! -
11 weeks post surg before and after :)
fattymcfatterson posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi everyone! So, I was sleeved on Sept 28 with Dr. Cribbins in Plano TX. Just a recap, I had ZERO pain and ZERO complications and I had a hysterectomy done at the same time! I have never slimed, nor have I ever thrown up (THANK GOD!). I used pain meds while I was in the hospital but I forgot to pump midway through the second night and never needed anything, even while at home. I was at the Texas State Fair one week post op and did just fine. My highest weight ever was 235. I am 5 ft 1 so it was packed on! Pre-op diet weight 232, day of surgery 227. Current weight: 197!!!!! I am THRILLED with my weight loss. Mostly because it is steady and I am not miserable!! I eat a variety of foods and don't suffer. I still have a cookie occasionally, ice cream occasionally and candy (hello, it's thanksgiving/christmas, how can I not???). One thing that has changed is my love for soda. I admit, I have tried about 5 sips since surgery, and each time it was NASTY! This from a dr pepper addict. I am so glad I don't like it anymore! I am a bad girl because I have not started exercising. Oh well, it is still coming off at a healthy pace so I am smiling. I am one of those people who would do this again in a heartbeat. I tell people and have not had any negative reaction. People still ask me how I'm feeling regularly though which is kind of funny since surgery was 11 weeks ago and I was fine within a few days. My before/after pics are "raw". Meaning I did not plan my best outfit, or maximum shooting angle or any of that. Just raw. I am really enjoying this journey and I am very happy with my decision. Oh, I forgot. So i was an 18/20 mostly. Now in shirts i go for xl, but my bottom is still somewhat in plus size. I did squeeze on a pair of Old Navy Diva Skinny size 16's and it won't be long before those fit just right. I definetely am losing the top part of my body faster but again, I am so not complaining. I am smaller then I have been in oh, maybe 15 years??? HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY! -

I'm very happy for you RJ. I hope that's the end of the madness. And kudos for being a ray of hope for someone struggling with complications. -

I went to the hospital and had my scope today. Findings------- everything is fine. There is no trace of the ulcer. No scaring at all. Everything looks good, healthy and pink! I could not stop smiling about that. Then I visited with a woman who has had several complications. Some like me some worse. I hoped that I might encourage her. She was lovely and thanked me over and over again for coming. She seemed very happy that I came. I know that if someone like me had visited me ( one who had experienced many problems and are coming out the other side ) when I was in the hospital that 5.5 months I would not have felt so hopeless. It made me feel so good to be there for her! -

I think you need to do some research because you've apparently gotten some bad info. -Vomiting isn't common with the band at all. In fact, it's supposed to be avoided at all costs. -There is no reason you should quit the gym. You can do anything after Lap Band that you did before it. (probably even more as you lose weight and get healthier) -There is no rule you can't eat certain foods. Personally, I believe in moderation not deprivation. I can and do still eat anything, I just eat smaller portions take the calories into account I think the difference between the band and another diet is satisfaction. The band works by suppressing your appetite and allowing you to be satisfied on much less food. The band itself doesn't make you lose weight, it just makes it a lot easier to lose weight by controlling your hunger. As far as the speed of weight loss, the average with the band is 1-2 pounds per week. Complications are a real risk. The good news is, only 5% of Lap Band patients have complications due to no fault of their own. The rest happen because of their own mistakes. Here's a study that explains it: http://www.futurity.org/weight-stays-off-long-after-lap-band-surgery/ Blood clots are a risk with any surgery. I had absolutely no problem after having Lap Band surgery. 18 months later when I had a tummy tuck/hernia repair I ended up in the ICU with life threatening blood clots. It can happen. Thankfully, there are precautions that most surgeons take so it doesn't happen My best advice is to do your homework, learn all the facts, and make an informed decision based on what you learn. It is a big, life changing decision. Best wishes on whatever you decide -

You go girl!! I'm so impressed with your perseverance in spite of all your complications. We should all stay as motivated. Thanks for sharing. -
Ok....here goes: Hello to everyone! I was sleeved on 5/5/13. Starting weight 196, current weight 158. I love my sleeve! I have never had any kind of complication or problem. I think I could tolerate eating anything...Now, if only I liked meat I would be set. I am trying my best to eat some of the nasty stuff every day. My preferred proteins are the protein drinks like Unjury and Premier Protein in vanilla, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt. I do like chicken breast grilled or baked (boneless and skinless) but I get tired of it. We are heaving grilled steak for dinner tonight. I hate it but will try to eat an ounce.......

Fill doctor put the fear in me about food quantity! CONFUSED.
Persimmon replied to Constance's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Any doctor telling you that you as a bandster should be eating 1/4-1/2 cup of food per meal has been improperly trained about banding. Period. That is from RNY protocols. Properly restricted bandsters eat between 1 to 1 1/2 cups per meal, get 50-60g protein from solid foods, 1200-1500 cal/day, sensible healthy balanced diet. Anyone feeling full on 1/4-1/2 cup meals is basically too tight which leads to banding complications. Banding is about sensible loss...attempting to starve it off with these instructions will put the body into starvation mode and make proper loss difficult if not impossible. The RNY confuses the body so that this is avoided during the initial honeymoon but that is not the case with bandsters. Gah...doctors...they get no education in nutrition in med school then are too big of control freaks to deligate that patient education to the people who DO have the education. Nancy -156 -
Failed, well if you failed then I really, really failed...My time at the hospital was 5 months with complications due to the surgery.... You are really being overly critical of yourself..You are on a path that can and will change your life forever if you use the tool properly......... Maybe a setback but not a fail...you are in good company here as I am not the only one to have suffered a setback...however......I can say this because a little over a year later I am in onederland..That's right and you will be too soon....pick up your head, get back on that horse and stop trying to sabotage yourself already... I really believe that something is worth far more when you have to work for it..Well girl that is you...just keep swimming and give yourself a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm about 4 days out from surgery, resting at home with no complications (knock on wood). I'm able to sleep regularly without pain meds, however when I wake up in the morning or after a nap, I have a horribly acrid/bitter taste in my mouth. I'm not having problems with reflux, so it's not an acidic taste. Any insight?

Hi! I had me sleeve surgery on the 2nd and am VERY disguraged. I had lost 12lbs during my fasting the week before it. I had a minor complication and was on IV fuilds for 2 days longer than I should have. I came home 20lbs heavier than when I went in. I have lost 98% of the Water weight but thats it. My measurements have not changed much. I have been doing everything I am suppose to be doing. So, when will I actually start losing weight? Christa

Article on CBC News about Mexican WLS
NMJG replied to belunos's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Current thread from a poster with complications, surgery done in Mexico. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/297213-i-had-a-small-leak-now-all-hell-has-broken-loose/ Her surgeon, who has done a lot of folks on this board, is in touch with her and is trying to mitigate things, but what a mess when you have different teams in different countries trying to sort things out. This is the atypical scenario for Mexico sleeves, but, it is a real possibility that complications will happen, and the ability to deal with the complications is hampered when the original doctor is in another country. Just something to think about and frustrating for everyone all around. I feel for this woman. -
I felt the exact same way. To the point where they said no one is keeping you here. No one is forcing you. If you want to leave you clothes are right there. Change and go if you want. I was so scared I kept crying before. I was in pain the 2nd day after and I also cried to my mom and said I made a mistake. My mom said it would get easier. It has and I'm happier every day that I did it. I'm 3 weeks and 3 days post op. The chances are low for complications. Just follow your doctors directions and you should be fine. This is a life change. It shouldn't be taken lightly. You decide what it's worth to you.

GERD, EGD results, and Sleeve vs. Bypass?
mskami77 replied to carolinafirefly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 5 years out RNY. I also had Gerd pre-op and my doctor would only do RNY. I haven't had any complications, strictures, hernias or anything of the sort. I stay pretty active and hike often. I think better time is spent researching your surgeon and their rates of complication. That has a much greater effect on your personal outcome than overall averages. If you're confident in your surgeon, I'd say go with the sleeve but be open to revision if necessary. Good luck on your surgery. HW 314 SW 296 GW 177 CW 169 -
Hi everyone! I'm not quite sure if this is the right forum, but I'm sure its no biggie. I have just made an appointment with my doctor for a lap band consultation. Currently, I am 24 yrs. old at 5ft 3in and weigh 240lbs (109 kg). I have toiled over weight reduction surgery for the past 3 or 4 years. I was just wondering about a few things that maybe you all could help me with before I even go to my consultation. I know hair loss is very typical post-op, and is experienced differently person to person, but I was just wondering if your hair ever comes back? I was a Water polo player back in my high school days and the swim cap that I wore every day sort of contributed to a slight thinning of my hair, especially in the front, so I'm a bit concerned about if my hair will regain its natural thickness once my body has leveled out (protien levels and all that jazz). I was also wondering about pregnancy after the surgery. Have any of you women had children since you have been banded? I do plan on having children sometime in my life (preferably before I'm 30), and I was wondering if the band has any sort of complications with pregnancy. I've done a lot of self research on this, and I really think that this is the right choice for me. I've been the chubby girl my whole life, and I am the only one in my immediate family that has ever had a weight problem. Any advice or comments would be greatly appriciated!

Whoa, scary that you have that clotting gene and are at constant risk. It's definitely fortunate that the surgery saved you from even worse health complications. It sounds like you've taken it all in stride! Keep up the positive outlook. Have you switched things up? I think my stall if finally breaking. I've lost 2 lbs in the last few days. I had family staying with me Thursday through Sunday for a big wedding. I was the matron of honor, and things were hectic. So it figures that the few days I don't journal everything I eat, didn't calorie count, allowed for a little cheating (eggs benedict over a crabcake. YUM!!), I'm able to get out the stall. Haha. Maybe I inadvertently did the 5:2 Plan, and it worked. I'm looking into the 5 Day Pouch Test. I wouldn't say I need it, but it could be a good refresher. A nice little reset.

Start of new chapter in my life!
gamergirl replied to trillian135's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My husband and I have been complication-free so far as well. It's early for us, only 10 days, but like Cindy, if it weren't for the scars, the inability to eat much, and the tiredness that comes on me too easily, I too would wonder if anything had changed. Apart from the most important thing which is that R has lost 20 lbs and I have lost 19 lbs in 3 weeks! NEVER in our lives have we managed that before. I was almost afraid to post my "not too bad" recovery story because I thought I might be giving people false hope because surely it's not that easy for everyone? So I'm doubly glad to see this post. Glad to hear you're doing well, and glad that this "not too bad" is in fact the norm for many, if not most of us. -

Yup, complication free for me as well! I did have some nausea the first two days. Honestly though I think that was more because I don't handle anesthesia well. I've gotten sick after every surgery I've ever had. I actually accused my doc of not doing anything! He just laughed and said..."Trust me, you'll will have signs that I did"..So, my bloodwork is just about perfect...cholesterol...perfect...vitamins..perfect...blood pressure...perfect...lost 52 pounds....perfect...and eat too much....oh I so feel it... So, the last appointment I had, "I said ok ok, so you DID do the surgery" I'm in Arizona as well, I didn't use Dr. Burpee, but I've heard good stuff about him and went to a seminar or two with him involved. -

Wonderful thread! There are so many posts out there from people who have had complications, can't eat or hold down food, have regrets -- or consider a day without a loss a STALL -- that I am afraid they are scaring off newbies. I've decided to make it my mission to make sure our world knows that the rate of complications is actually very small. While I really feel for those sleevers who have had problems, I am afraid their voices are drowning out the positive experiences that most of us have had. Let's all join together to share our positive experiences! -
She had lap band with him around 5 years ago. She had complications and had to have it out in December. I think she's going to have a revision and get the sleeve. I hope so. She lost a lot of weight but she didn't follow the rules.

Hi Everyone. I am 4 day post op and today is finally the first day i am not having dry heaving. When i was in the hospital i was given ensure Protein shakes but could not get them down. The gave me the Proti-15 shakes and i was able to get those down. Now that im home i dont think the proti-15 ones are not helping me as i feel like im really light headed. I had my husband go buy me the ensures that i was given in the hospital and they are def more effective. My question is should i be drinking them? I was given them in the hospital and my dr seem to think they would be fine but so many people are saying no. They have 160 Calories, 16 grs of protein. I dont want to cause any harm to my surgery as i had complications while in surgery and i dont want to cause no side issues as my diabetes has completely gone into remission and im not taking any meds anymore. What should i do? thanks for all the help in advance
