I have relost a 40 lb regain since November using Keto. it was fairly easy but I'm still working toward goal, and actually facing a possible revision to RNY because of persistent GERD. I'm 4 years out VSG and would do it again in a second.
-
I had some regain and really struggled with losing it, but finally got back on track with Keto in November and have successfully lost all but 7 lbs. I'll hopefully be back at my low weight in about 3 weeks. However, I never officially met goal so I actually have another 25 or so to go to that. I'm struggling with persistent severe GERD and have had it my whole life. I'm looking at a possible revision to RNY which actually sort of excites me because I feel like it will help me relieve the GERD permanently. I'm still down 60 lbs of my surgical loss and feeling good, but continue to work to the goal.
-
After 5 months of strict Keto I'm feeling good, have lost all but 7 lbs of regain and restored my overall health. However, at the appointment with my surgeon last fall, he told me if the GERD still persists after weight loss, my only option is revision to RNY. I'm feeling focused and still have another 4 months before I see him again, but I'm still taking a PPI twice a day. I've had an EGD which shows persistent reflux, however no Barrett's or significant scarring right now. I've had GERD almost my entire life due to the way I carry my weight, in fact I had an upper GI series as a baby from such severe reflux! I've been on a PPI for about 15 years and really want to get off of it related to the longterm risks with the drug class. I'm a nurse practitioner so I am very familiar with the research on the subject. I guess this all boils down to the fact that I'm probably still looking at a revision. I'll do what I have to for my total health but really hoping that I can get another 15-20 lbs off before I see him and the GERD is resolved.

How did you pick your doctor?
Creekimp13 replied to TaylorMade4One's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I did a LOT of research. My criteria: Doctor had to be board certified and have a stellar reputation. (My doc is actually ON the board of bariatric surgeons here who creates protocol for certification) Make sure to ask your doctor how many procedures he/she does each week, and how many procedures they've done total. Some surgeons will provide success statistics for their patients. Hospital had to be a Center of Excellence. I wanted everyone involved in my care to have experience dealing with lots of bariatric patients. I wanted a ward dedicated to bariatric surgery....not just a couple of beds. Hospital had to be a major trauma center. I wanted a big enough hospital to attract and retain surgical talent and have good resources for unexpected cardiovascular events. I wanted a big enough bariatric center to have a dedicated 24/7 emergency line and an excellent staff for follow ups (which are crucial to safety and success) I was particularly interested in post surgical diets. While I was willing to do a keto based diet for a short period of time, I really hate how I feel on keto...and a lot obariatric doctors push it. My brain feels sluggish and my cholesterol goes up. None of these things are acceptable to me....so I needed a program that worked with low glycemic carb eaters who like a lot of plant based protein. (I'm not a vegetarian, but I am not a huge fan of getting the bulk of my protien from whey and meat) My program works with a lot of international clients with different dietary preferences, vegans, etc. My diet (Mayo Clinic Diet) was well received at my program. My program fit these criteria, and is associated with a well respected major research hospital. I've been really happy with my choice:) -
Searching for other tall, pear-shaped muscular women
design_creature posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m looking for other women like me that will share their weight loss experience! I’m nervous I won’t lose as much as I want to. I’m a lifelong vegetarian and already work out three times a week. I’ve been athletic my whole life but have an extremely hard time losing weight. I did strict keto for a year between my pregnancies and lost 48 lbs but plateaued and was never able to get below 248 no matter what I did. Im 5’10” and I’ve never been thin or even average. At 12 years old I was 5’9” and 205 lbs. I wore a size 16 pants. I hadn’t even gone through puberty yet. I can’t identify with women who were thin when they were young and then gained a lot of weight. I did gain weight gradually but at 205 I was a size 16 and at 296 I’m a size 20. I honestly feel like I’m exactly the same size as I was back then; my body just feels older, but I still / always felt like a big person. Being tall contributes to that. I’m approved for surgery but need to hear that there are other women out there like me, who have been big their whole life but are also strong and athletic. My goal weight is 200 lbs. I’d love to be a solid size 14 and feel like clothes today are better for pear-shaped women like me. -

What do y'all think about this recipe website
RickM replied to UnicornSyrup's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It looks pretty good - I will have to play with it more and try some things. So many of these sites, particularly those targeting bariatrics and weight loss make the mistake of confusing low carb, keto, or whatever the diet of the day is with low calorie or weight loss friendly, and they don't always go together, Most of these diet concepts make compromises to fit within their charter, so that low carb or gluten free recipes are often higher calorie than normal. This site seems to flag their recipes to these different diets so one can pick and choose what ones may fit whatever diet they are on. -
Check out Kayln's Kitchen on Facebook or https://kalynskitchen.com/ Love her keto recipes! I tried this recipe last night and it was delicious. I substituted the bread crumbs for almond meal, and I used SF BBQ sauce. http://www.skinnykitchen.com/recipes/skinny-meatloaf-muffins-with-barbecue-sauce/

High Triglycerides- Advice Needed!
FluffyChix replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Rapid weight loss can cause transient high triglycerides. (Fats (triglycerides) are made with fatty acids on a glycerine backbone.) Because of our diet, we're liberating fat very quickly. It happens in a low carb/keto diet but also in a VLCD (very low calorie diet). It's not unusual for people to have elevated tris for 3-6 months while doing serious reduction. Honestly, if it were me, I'd ask to be retested in 6 months. Ash do you know if your family has a genetic predisposition to high tris? I would also go pretty low carb if you aren't already. (Sorry can't remember.) -
I had this problem. 6 weeks post opp and I was forcing myself to stay at 800 calories but I was starving and had zero energy. I was also doing keto and staying below 30 carbs/day as well as working out and doing about 4-5 miles walking. I posted on here and got some great feedback. One problem was I was having lots of little 100-150 calorie meals/snacks every couple hours. If I didn’t eat every 2 hours I was literally ready to gnaw my arm off and would get light headed when I stood up. I switched things up and started eating around 250 calories per meal. That keeps me full way longer. I’ve also thrown this keto thing out the window and am bringing fruit/berries back in my diet. Also upped fat content and instead of doing fat free everything I’m eating 2% yogurt, milk and adding in avocados. Now I’m eating about 1000 cal/day give or take. These changes helped break my stall, keep away the hunger, and I have so much more energy. Everyone is different and you really need to listen to your body. One reason I refuse to do a carb restricted diet....is that I know I can't do it for a lifetime....I feel like crap without carbs. If I do keto? I know myself enough to know that eventually I'll fall off that wagon. I have adjusted to healthy carbs, though, and have even learned to love them:) We all have some things that we know are our Achilles heels. I don't want to give my Achilles heel leverage in my life anymore. All the habits I'm building right now...I'm building on the basis of....this is a lifetime change. This is a diet I can love for a lifetime. This is a diet I will never feel deprived on while I'm eating it. It's hard to build your forever diet. But I'm hopeful. I'm tired of diet fatigue...where I push, push, push, until I break....because of my unrealistic expectations. I'm tired of deprivation until goal...it doesn't work. You starve yourself until hit goal and you go....Finally, I can EAT! And then you screw yourself. It's crazy. This time around I'm going slow and steady, I'm keeping my expectations sane, and letting myself enjoy every meal, every little victory, every stall. LOL:) For the first time, I really feel like I'm going to succeed for a lifetime. Because I am so done with that diet yoyo ****. f**k that. I love my forever diet. it makes me feel strong, happy, and like success....is inevitable. Even if it takes a while.

My journey started about 9 years ago with a Realize Lap Band in June of 2009. I initially had great success with a 50lb weight loss (half of my goal) which occurred over the first few months post surgery. Then I figured out how to "trick" my band with dense sweet calories and my weight loss stalled but I didn't really gain back any. Fast forward 4 years and I had a couple of scares where a piece of meat got stuck in my stoma, followed by a move to a new city and state. After the last incident where I had a blockage emergency, I had my band unfilled. That was 5 years ago... I've since gained 1/2 of the weight back that I had lost... I tried multiple other diet plans and actually did have success with Keto but it simply is not sustainable for me. A year ago I made an appointment with the bariatric center but canceled it hoping to give Keto another try. Here I am a year and 10 more pounds later... SO, today I called and made an appointment. The soonest they could give me was two months from now which is kind of disappointing. My experience with KETO has really helped get my sugar cravings under control, unfortunately my age (59) and metabolism has my body at it's preferred weight set point. I'm not really sure of what to expect going forward. If any of you have had long lapses in your band I would appreciate some insight. Thanks, Vicki

Yeah I’m beginning to think f#%* this keto business. Im already restricting enough by keeping to a 1000 cal diet. Beans, sweet potatoes and fruits might help me feel full longer.

Add some mayo to that tuna! LOL *cry face* Your diet makes me sad! I cook a lot and take leftovers most of the time for lunch. I use Kayln's Kitchen for a lot of my cooking inspiration. She has her website broken down by diet type. I try and do Keto mostly. Instead of jello, I would add something with protein. You could do cottage cheese, a low fat cheese stick, Greek yogurt, or even a non starch veggie. I personally eat a lot of edamome, brussle sprouts, and chick peas.

Did I lose too much to qualify?
jessicakeslosing replied to jessicakeslosing's topic in Insurance & Financing
So this is what I was thinking too.... bulky clothes and drink a ton of water beforehand BUT my next appointment (and last appointment) is with my new nutritionist before they send it in to insurance. I've been doing a diet (keto) under doctor's supervision but then my surgeon's nutritionist specifically said "I need to know that you can follow OUR lifestyle plan in order for me to sign off on you"... so then that makes me think that she needs to see that I can lose weight following her specific rules [emoji86][emoji86][emoji86] ughhhh. I'm in such a pickle. Do you think maybe if I call her and I am just transparent about it that she would be understanding of my situation? Or talk to the PA and ask them if they can send in one of my higher weights instead when sending in the approval packet? I'm not sure how morally sound it is to even ask them [emoji51] Honestly, I am desperate. This whole conversion surgery is something I've put so much time and effort into. It's been years in the making. I've changed my lifestyle because I know that it is just a tool... thinking that if I change my habits now that it will make it easier for me to adjust when I do have restriction again. It just sucks to know that that is not being taken into account -
To preface, many moons ago I played soccer in college and despite my weight gain, I still identify as an athlete. Exercise is not punishment for me, it’s something I’m excited to do again and to have more successful with. That being said, I recently hit 4 wks and doc cleared me for cardio. I downloaded a couch to 5k app and for the last 5 days have been going on hour long run/walks for about 3-4 miles. Combined with daily activity I’m getting in 5-6 miles/day. Problem is that I get really tired in the afternoon and am constantly hungry. I’m eating about 800-900 cal/day but wondering if I need to up that? Also following a keto diet. I’ve been doing soft foods for a couple weeks and am capable of eating more but have been trying to stay less than 900...for no other reason than most people on here are eating so damn little after 4 weeks and I’m trying to follow suit. A typical day may be: 8am - Decaf coffee w/ half premier protein 9am - 2 scrambled eggs 11am - Half serving ground beef noodle-less lasagna 2pm - other half lasagna 5pm - Greek yogurt 7pm - 2 oz Smoked Salmon, one soft cheese wedge 9pm - 1/4 cup cottage cheese 11pm - Decaf coffee w/ half premier protein I’ve been keeping track in MyFitnessPal and you can see the breakdown. Questions - for those that exercise, how many calories are you consuming? Any suggestions on why I’m hitting a wall in the afternoon and need a nap? If I don’t eat every 2 hours my stomach starts grumbling and I get light headed. Should I be eating more at meals? I’ve been hesitant to because I’m nervous that I’ll still need the snack and will go too high on calories for the day. I’ve also been in a pretty major stall over the last 3 weeks. 10 days with nothing, then 5lbs in 2 days, now another 6 days with no loss. Thanks for any help! If I was in your position at this stage I would try mixing up my diet for a bit. A high protein diet is great, but sometime soon you have to mix it up a bit. Right now half of your calories are coming from protein. It’s not clear from your post where the rest of your calories are coming from, but if you are on a low carb keto diet, perhaps change that up for a couple of weeks (maybe target 1/3 of your calories from protein, carbs, and fats.

a type 1 diabetic you would have different needs than me so I do not presume that my way would would work for anyone actually. everyone needs to follow what works for them. but i will add that saturated fat does not cause heart disease (there was actually no evidence of this - documented in Big fat surprise by Nina Teicholz) and i am carb sensitive so try to stay under 50 carbs and 25 sugar grams. i do not go full keto though i use its guidelines. I am sure a true keto person would think I am not on program. skipping meals does not slow metabolism when you actually get plenty of good nutrients when you do eat. not eating for 16 (and sometimes 22) hours actually gives the pancreas and liver a break and lowers the demand for insulin. a lot of that time i am sleeping so it is not dangerous for me who is not on glucose lowering meds. people should research and do what works for them. some people can tolerate more carbs and some cannot. for me this was the solution. 1) don’t put sugar in, 2) eat real food including real fats not processed vegetable oils and 3) time restricted eating. otherwise known as intermittent fasting. I am not perfect in any way but for those who have gained weight back, i recommend giving up snacking between meals and watch added sugar. that was my first step. i know people who have gained much more back than I did so i posted this to give hope to those looking to get back on track and / or stop the craving and stop the gaining. good luck! -
1 week post op feeling terrible
FluffyChix replied to Kels7887's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I swear, being hydrated is the key to feeling good and healing fast. Neither @Creekimp13 nor myself had issues with food advancement or I think exhaustion. And I took her advice and treated the fluid like a job. I woke early (to take a medicine) and began drinking early 4oz per hour in the beginning. I would alternate as she suggested with protein drinkings and non-water liquids on alternating hours. And by the first day home, I had gotten in 64oz of liquids (over half of that was coming from water). I'm sorry you're struggling. ((hugs)) If you were heavy into carbs and sugar pre-surgery without going through the Atkins or keto flu, it's also possible, that part of your extreme fatigue is your body converting from being a carb/sugar burner to being a fat burner (which you want). It's a miserable 1-3 week ordeal but once you're through your energy rebounds as long as you don't revert to being a sugar burner again. -
Take a look at the Mayo Clinic Diet. It's based on the Mediterranean diet....which is the diet eaten by the people who have the best longevity in the world...lowest heart disease and cancer rates, too. I have never felt better in my life or enjoyed my diet more....than when I started eating the Mayo Clinic Diet. (have been on it since June of last year) My nutritionist is fully supportive of my continuing this diet. I have no problem hitting my 60+ g of protein goal, and I keep my calories between 1000-1200 a day. Some nutritionists will really push keto after bariatric surgery....but my office serves a population of people from all over the world...many vegans, some following very different cultural eating habits...so they're more open to different paths up the mountain so to speak:) Best wishes to you on your journey.

That's exactly how i eat too!! I did keto for a few months just as an experiment to see if it really works and it does, but i love fruit, and everything else you mentioned, and overall i just feel better when i eat the way i was before (even if the weight loss is slower) Plus the idea of cutting out multiple healthy food groups forever seems like i might have deficiency issues later on with certain nutrients.

Yes Ive been looking at both as well I saw something like the caveman keto diet so that sounds about it good. Everything im looking into is juicy meaning in sauce my doc said Im not allowed to eat like oven chicken, turkey, no grilled dry steak, no fried chicken etc. So basically everything has to be moist because he said its better for the first year to take care of my new stomach and to lose the maximum amount of weight. He also said dried meat (like oven and fried) can give me a stomach ache and ill literally feel it digesting in my stomach. Sounds cray cray but whatever Im in this for life and I wont be suffering because thank goodness I know how to cook. The only problem I have is that Im dominican and in my culture I typically make rice, beans, and meat at least 4-5 times a week pasta dish for the weekends so I dont think I can convince my entire family to be on the diet so Ill just make two meals but Im thinking since its just me and I wont eat alot and also im fine with eating the same thing all the time Ill just prep 2 lasagna pans 1 for lunch 1 for dinner it should last me 6 days then we eat out once a week. Hope you all ok with me talking about food :X -

As a Type I diabetic who is on an insulin pump, I can attest to the fact that insulin makes you hungry. The more carbs an insulin-dependent diabetic eats, the more insulin we need to inject. I am leery of the Keto diet. Carbohydrates are not eaten, so the body doesn't need to produce as much insulin, but doesn't skipping breakfast keep the metabolism in sleep mode? (burning less fat) Anohter issue I have, the amount of saturated fat in this diet is obscene. Definitely not lean or heart healthy. All that being said, it often causes people to lose weight, the problem arises when carbs are reintroduced and saturated fats remain in the diet. Sorry to sound so critical. I just know a lot of people on this diet, and I sometimes worry that some of the science is junk science. -
I totally get that, that's actually how i feel. Keto is fun because i basically eat crap and still lose weight, but i prefer the other low carb way of life, it's less restrictive. And somedays i just crave things like protein packed fruit smoothies and keto doesn't allow for things like that, or spaghetti squash dishes.
