My husband has diabetes and is a type 2. He eats keto WOE and his blood glucose is down, his A1C has improved from 8.7 to 6.5. He is decreasing his insulin intake also. He eats 1 time per day, only when hungry. We don"t eat processed foods. Our clothes are very baggy. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Almost 3 years out...why still high protein and low carb?
Ms skinniness replied to ForLfKlovr's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I am 6 yrs out and added some sugars via frappuccinos. I gained weight. In the last month I started WOE Leto. I increased my fats by eating bacon, butter and other non processed foods. It had worked and I lost 15 lbs. Went back to wearing size 10 jeans and they are slipping now. I love eating keto. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
How do you, personally, define a carb?
Creekimp13 replied to Little Green's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When you can't admit a diet made up of 50% carbs is a "carb rich diet",,,...was logical discussion ever happening? Dude, I get it....you like Keto, you're horrified by the number of carbs I eat, and you think I eat too much. LOL It's cool...to each, their own. But to address your concerns......my carbs and calories are an approved part of a study being conducted by a major medical research hospital...and they seem to be working great. My doctor and nutritionist are delighted with my progress and compliance. And most importantly, I am, too. I love that I'm off my blood pressure meds, I love that I'm off my diuretic, I love that my legs don't swell anymore, I love that my cholesterol is low. I love that my A1C blood sugar is normal. I love that I don't have any nutrient deficiencies. I love the energy I have!!! I love that I can mow my whole yard comfortably, without getting out of breath. I love that I sleep better. I love that I haven't had a cold or flu or illness in over a year. And I love my forever diet! I don't ever feel deprived or hungry. I feel like I can do this forever...and that's the first time that's ever happened with a diet in my life. There are a lotta ways up this mountain. I wish you tremendous success no matter which path you choose:) -
I had very similar pre surgery tastes, but after a little while, fruit tasted way better to me. I can taste the sugar a lot more now that I don't do processed sugar, so I love pretty much all fruit. It used to taste sour to me. Also, I do nothing low fat, in fact, I feel less brain fog when I keep plenty of healthy fats in my diet. I use avocados, avocado oil, evoo (not for cooking because it breaks down), coconut oil and MCT oil in smoothies. I have read Jason Fung's book the Obesity Code and it makes so much sense to me. I have done a little intermittent fasting 16:8 and am increasing that to 4 days a week, while using the diet doctor website for keto. Never liked soda, but I will do a Zevia which has stevia here and there as a zero calorie treat. But I'm over 26 months out. Probably not a good idea to try that early on. Love the protein bars too. Quest was my favorite and the new Bryer's low carb ice cream, but eventually pretty much stopped those as I found healthier choices (banana ice cream). Lots of chicken and salmon, mussels, clams an shrimp. I do however do a lot of cottage cheese and gouda, cheddar, mazzerella and havarti cheese. Plus I like to try many other cheeses. The very bet to you in your journey.

How do you, personally, define a carb?
Creekimp13 replied to Little Green's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Like Jess said....post surgical diets are incredibly different. I think Jess's version is more common among American bariatric centers.... and all of her food is stuff I'd eat in a heartbeat...looks delicious. Biggest difference, is that I do a lot of fuit and low glycemic carbs and more plant based protein. I've always done healthy carbs. Right after protein drinks I transitioned to thin cream of wheat and oatmeal per my approved plan. Mashed potatoes and vegetarian refried beans were on my soft food approved list, too. Didn't do whole grain breads until later, they were tough for a while. I know a lot of folks do something closer to keto. My clinic serves a lot of international clients and lots of them are vegan and vegetarian culturally, so my nutritionist was delighted when I said I'd been doing Mayo Clinic Diet. She was like...Awesome, I can work with that! Here's a sample menu from early on: We're only required to do 60g of protein per day, but it's not unusual for me to hit 80-100. The big things that make my diet work (I think), are fixed calories under 1200 per day, little to no refined sugar, healthy fats, fiber, steady blood sugar, lean protein and plant based protein. I don't do much animal fat. Also, my clinic stresses exercise and writes our recommendations on a prescription pad. -
Hi all. First time posting and looking for some advice. Had my band surgery 41/2 years ago and initially lost 35kg. Within 5 kg of my goal weight. Then slowly over the last two years have gained back 18kg and have really struggled. Tred joing a gym and have been following the Keto diet but having no luck. Really struggling to keep most things down and find I regurgitate nearly every meal Went back to the drs and they have suggested a barium X-ray and to ‘reset my band’ and start again or get the bypass surgery. Does anyone have any advice for me or experienced a similar journey ?

How do you, personally, define a carb?
AtlantaRed replied to Little Green's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you're counting carbs, a carb is a carb. I wouldn't eat anything on your list. If you just had to have something, look on Pinterest for keto bread, keto pizza, meatza. Find low carb marinara on Amazon as well as almond flour and xantham or guar gum for thickening, etc. -
Almost 3 years out...why still high protein and low carb?
IveGotThePower replied to ForLfKlovr's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
This is a question I have asked myself also. I see that studies show plant based diets are proven to be very healthy and so, I questioned basing my diet on protein. I now do plant based, low carb, but not keto low and healthy fats. I have gained about 5/6 lbs and seem to stay there as long as I don't add processed foods or sugar to my diet. My blood work #s are excellent. I am experimenting with intermittent fasting 8:16, hoping it will help me drop a few more. -
Bariastic, MyFitness Pal or other app?
SammyTheStrange replied to elforman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Chronometer has worked well for me when I was doing a keto diet because it keeps track of Macros and Micros. Large food data base and also tracks vitamin. No liquid tracking though. -
Keto style diet drops weight quickly before surgery But balance is best long term

It's normal and called carb withdrawal or keto flu. It sucks, but is something that must be endured. I tell people, it's much better to get the pre-surgery act together and go through this hell BEFORE you're also recovering from surgery. It should get better in a week or two. Dr. Westman (low carb diet doc at Duke) says to take 1tsp MOM daily, 1-2 cups of bouillon daily, and make sure you're very hydrated. It's caused from rapid dehydration in the cells and also from switching from burning glucose to fat.

Bariastic, MyFitness Pal or other app?
elforman posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, I just got my date, Tuesday, June 5. I've been doing a lazy version of Keto as my pre-op diet until now and have not been tracking my food, but I certainly will starting doing so the day after surgery. I know that Bariastic and MyFitness Pal are two of the most popular apps for food and activity tracking. However, are there any apps that store your information on the web and also have websites that allow you to enter all of your information as well? I love my phone, but I spend most of my time on a computer and it would be much easier for me (and my eyes) to be able to enter everything through a website as well as a phone? -
There's an awesome book, that I kinda look on as the "bible" of low carb sports physiology that debunks a lot of the myths that circulate about low carb keto diets. Written by two docs who are very well-respected researchers at the fore-front of sports medicine and endurance athletics science. The Art & Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance - by Drs. Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek It's a pretty mind-blowing book, actually.

I've been reading about these and still feel confused. Can someone direct me to easily understandable information?

Just wanted to chime in...I am 4 years out right now. I did great for the first 2 years, then had some regain. for the past 10 months I FOUGHT that regain. I searched online, I bought the 'reset' book, tried to print all sorts of meal plans, etc. I never was honest with myself to admit that my eating/drinking was completely out of control. Then last fall, I had some sobering medical news. One of the things that I initially had surgery to combat was reappearing. And, the doctor was moderately concerned. That was ALL it took. My brain kicked in, and I was on fire. I went strict Keto (doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me) and lost all of my regain (except about 7 lbs right now), losing about 50 lbs in 5 months. I have rejoined a gym. My medical thing has resolved. I have been tinkering with all of the LCHF info, intermittent fasting, and reading lots of randomized control trials about metabolic disease, insulin resistance, etc. I had to get out of my own head and just let auto pilot take over. I KNOW what to do. we all know what to do. For me, true Keto works great and I'm feeling good. Another 30 lbs and I will be at my TRUE goal and will pursue plastics. It TOTALLY is do-able, even this far out, to get control and get back on track.

Three years out, on testosterone pellets, HUNGRY ALL THE TIME!
akreese02 replied to akreese02's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did switch from synthroid to naturthroid so maybe that needs to titrate. I have done the Paleo and Keto thing and even when I fell off carb wagon, I haven't felt hunger like this. It is if I never had the surgery because I can eat a lot more too (I know about slider foods etc. etc.) I saying I could eat half a plate of food, now I can eat a whole plate almost over night. It is a bit scary. -
Had my final visit with the nutritionist today

Fortunately, all went well. I lost 29lb in the three and a half months since my first appointment doing a sloppy job of keto and not exercising at all due to my bad back, bad feet and bad shoulders. They'll be submitting my paperwork to Cigna for approval tomorrow, and the staff said it usually takes up to two weeks for Cigna to process everything. Once the approval comes in they'll schedule me for surgery and I'll make an appointment with my PCP for my pre-op physical. My best guess is that I'm looking at mid-June at this point. The good news I got is that I will not be having my procedure done outpatient as I'd previously been told. It turns out that Cigna requires an overnight stay, so I'll be having the surgery at the hospital and will get to spend the night. While I'm sure the doctor would not do it out patient if it wasn't safe, I prefer the idea that I'll be monitored for at least the first 24 hours following surgery. So now I wait. Many people post about their nerves and fears yet I have none. My wife had a knee replacement two weeks ago and I was perfectly calm. I've had two epidurals in the last two months and didn't worry at all. I even took my daughter out driving on Sunday morning, her first time behind the wheel, and even then I was utterly relaxed. I'm really beginning to think that at this point in my life nothing is going to phase me any more. -
At 208 and 1,200 calories a day you should be losing weight even if you weren't running, especially over that period of time. I have no reason to doubt you but is it possible that you are really consuming more calories than you think? Alternatively have you had yourself tested to establish you base metabolic rate (how many calories you burn at rest). Without knowing these answers I can only suggest that whatever you are doing with your diet try doing something different. If you are currently high protein low carb add more carbs, if you are more balanced try keto or paleo.

I will be doing a variation of keto in that I have no intention of eating any fruit since I don't care for most of it and I don't want to trigger any sugar cravings. I also have gluten sensitivity and don't eat any gluten containing products (wheat/barley/rye) or the gluten free crap they sell at the store. I do make my own almond bread which I do not plan to have until much later. I love almost all vegetables and I am the queen of cauliflower. I absolutely adore chicken or shrimp fried "rice" with cauliflower as well as other recipes. I plan for this to be my ongoing weight loss diet. I do not purchase any fat free stuff and use small amounts of regular unsalted butter and/or EVOO. I did get some plain, reduced fat FAGE greek yogurt for my current postop period but not eating much of it (2-3 ounces per day) Protein sources of chicken breast, salmon, shrimp, fish, black or red beans. Not a big red meat fan. Love all types of cheese but will have very little, more like a garnish. I dislike sodas and juices so no worries there. My downfall are the candy type protein bars (atkins and others) and sugar free chocolate stuff that taste so good that it is hard to eat a reasonable portion so those are out. Swearing off all alcohol until football season at the very earliest. Hopefully by then I will not want it.

1 year surgiversary and reached my goal!
anonymom26 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I know some people here have enjoyed seeing my progress, so I wanted to do another update. I recently had my 1 year surgery anniversary from my gastric bypass. I have also reached goal and am no longer losing weight, so I figured now was a good time! I am so happy I had my bypass. I am running, hiking, and doing all the physical things that I was limited in before. I eat well and don't feel any loss or limitation emotionally. I have added carbs back in now that I am at goal, and have maintained well (even lost a little) over the past 5 months since hitting goal and going off keto. I had my 1 year follow up with my doctor, and he congratulated me for losing 100% excess weight and for doing it in less than a year! Hiya coops.. I’m UK too and used to enjoy milky coffee. I now use Alpro fresh light Soya Milk (not the unsweetened) and that feels like a treat during the day. For me it’s all been about the carbs. Low carbs/Keto weight drops off although much slower than during the honeymoon phase. This milk is carb free, 78cals and 7.1g of protein, 4.3 fibre for 12oz. Wishing you the best for keeping on track ! Kate 😀

My provided diet plan is pretty vague, making t a little difficult to know how far off I am from what they might expect. I sometimes eat foods I shouldn’t but I am human and recognize those moments. I have kept it to a minimum and move on from those in a healthier fashion rather than continuing with the bad habits. I am also avoiding snacking & carbs. Those are huge triggers for me. I am not drinking liquids during meals, rather drinking liquids around my meals. No carbonated drinks. Sometimes juice but that’s like 4 oz once or twice a week. I know exercise is not as huge a factor as the dieting but I know the sedentary lifestyle has affected me tons. I am attempting a keto type diet although I know I cannot reach the required amount of calories. Lack of bathroom use also affects my weight. I am trying to keep my foods as clean and healthy as possible. HW: 286.4 SW: 267.4 CW: 234.4 GW: 150 -Charly

I have made my own every week for a very long time. I do Keto/Primal and love it. It made a huge difference for me in avoiding 'keto flu' when I first got started.
