Anyone else's having surgery this week or next week?
Sionnanshannon replied to Dessy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was finally able to sleep last night! I couldn't sleep since Sunday, the night before my surgery because of nerves and all sleep since then has been in short shifts bc of pain/discomfort but last night my surgeon injected a local anesthetic into the main incision site that was bothering me and I slept like a baby. it feels great to actually be rested. -
LOL! I thought about calling today and talked myself out of it bc I wasn't sure if they'd tell me. I have BCBS Carefirst. I think I'll call tomorrow. My paperwork was submitted on the 13th and I still haven't heard anything. My doctor told me it would take two weeks.

Thinking strongly about Gastric Bypass
Matt Z replied to Erin18's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Firstly, it's super ok to be nervous or scared about it. I know I was! Secondly... I wish I would have just done the bypass back in 2011 when I had my band put in... all that BS because I was afraid of the commitment to the bypass. I too was concerned with permanent changes. And rightfully so. But I'll tell you right now, after surgery, I couldn't tell you if my intestines were really altered or not. Just can't feel any changes. I'm losing weight, I feel great, I can eat about as much as I could with the band when it was working as expected. So I *KNOW* it was done... their just isn't any sensation of a change. I was afraid of the "Death on the table" thing too... so much so that I drafted up documents for family members just in case. So I could say my goodbyes if need be. Overall, I knew I needed something that would "work" and had more feedback (dumping) if I went off the path. I'm 3 months out, down 58ish lbs, body fat is down like 7%, I'm in the gym daily. I eat so much better now. I really wish I had done this sooner. -
What's really wild? My great grandparents (Slovakian immigrants) planted a poppy field JUST to make this old world bread (and of course planted it by the road to share the pretty flowers with their neighbors)...and got visited by the feds because their dozen children were out there barefoot working the fields and neighbors driving by got concerned. LOL No, officer, our children are not opium slaves, we are making tasty sweet bread. That said....this is some addictive freaking bread.

I'm not supposed to have it either, though I think it's BS. They've disproved a lot of the myths about coffee over and over again. That's one thing I will be bringing up with my surgeon at my follow-up. I can see not drinking it prior to surgery and during the initial healing stages (MILD diuretic and acidic) but not on a long-term basis. The latest literature doesn't support needing to give up coffee. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/caffeinated-drinks/faq-20057965 https://www.livescience.com/55479-does-caffeine-cause-dehydration.html https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/01/13/262175623/coffee-myth-busting-cup-of-joe-may-help-hydration-and-memory

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Elle_Woods replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date is August 13th also!!!! Ahhh I am so excited/nervous/I dont even know bc I have thought about doing this forever and it all happened so fast it does not even seem real. I am also self pay, and have been jumping through pre surgery hoops and just got my official surgery date on Thursday. I am gonna be BROKE after this but know it will be worth it! I really like my surgeon and his group also. I am 31 and unmarried, and it was important to me to get the single incision surgery because my scars do not heal well. What are you doing pre-op, ect? -

Shelly, I am really enjoying your journal of going from Iowan and Corn-Fed to a Lean Keen for the living Queen of DesMoines and points West. Might even start one after my July Surgery too. In the meantime yours is might fine! Happy Early Birthday, Happy REBIRTHDAY and happy today's and tomorrows😝 -
1st day of pre-op diet - 8 hours in - absolutely starving!!!!
Allie589 replied to LD91's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved last August and I have to say, the two week pre op diet was the hardest part of the whole process! Honestly, I slept as much as possible bc if I was sleeping, I wasn’t focused on how hungry and miserable I was. The only thing that kept me going was knowing this was to shrink my liver otherwise, I probably would’ve failed. Hang in there!!! It is the hardest part! And let me tell you, it’ll be sooooooo worth it!!! Holding your hand through this whole process! -
Does the attention bother you?
Creekimp13 replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Might as well just enjoy the compliments...as compliments. If the person has more to say to you of substance...give them a chance. If all they want to talk about is superficial bs...let it roll off. I've had more doors held for me by middle aged gawky men in the past thee months than in the past ten years. I feel your irritation. Here's the problem Ash....you're freaking gorgeous and maybe you're realizing that more than you used to. Mortal men cannot resist. Can you really blame them? Yep, it's dopey.... but, meh...it's largely harmless. -
Anthem BCBS (in Missouri) - Insurance requirements
Snapple replied to KatallacStrong's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have an individual plan since we are independent contractors and this was the only plan I could buy. It's BS. And all thanks to Obamacare. I have really, REALLY crappy coverage and my prescription drugs aren't even covered until I hit my deductible $6000 deductible. Good luck to you and I wish you the best! -

BCBS Federal Anypne?
MissPriss81 replied to sleevemebaby7781's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi there, was wondering if you heard back from BCBS Fed? I have them also, mine was submitted for approval on 6/19 and I was required to show 2 years of weight history. Were you required to do that as well? -
Oh I completely get wanting to punch them in the p-face. Lol. Girl, I still have moments where I think, I can't do this **** anymore ( life) I need a cigg lol. Trust me, I get it. Tell me this, have you checked if your insurance requires you to quit? Ask them. Find out, if you MUST be a nonsmoker for thet doctor to do it or for your insurance to cover it. If the doctor or your insurance requires you to be a non smoker. They may do a test to see if you're really quit, which is a nicotine test or a blood test. And if so, then chewing nicorette or nicotine gum would potentially fail you. Because even though you're not getting the smoke etc, you're getting the nicotine which is a drug. Stupid huh"? Because what diff does it make if you have niotine in your system? What or how is that going to affect your surgery. But find out. My insurance did a text of nicotine an dI knew about it way before, which is why I dind't go the gum route. I did Chantix and girl, it makes you fel like you're smoking. I mean, kinda sorta. It makes you "get through" those urges bc it gives you the same feeling that nioctine does. Girl, trust me, its worth asking your doctor AND your insurance. You don't want to have quit for nothing or quit but the nicotone make you still lose in the end.. Let me know what they say, I am just curious

Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal?
Matt Z replied to MissPriss81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@ShawnGS check this thread out for your BCBS Fed questions. -
My lapband was approved by BCBS, not Federal though. But, I have GEHA, and they approved my revision to bypass. So I don't see why BCBS Fed would have you any troubles. You'll more than likely need to do the typical stuff, GEHA required a 6 month doctor monitored diet prior to approving. Have you checked in with BCBS Fed to see what they require for approval?
-
I feel your pain. Are you quitting bc the rule they have in place? If you're not made to quit not, bc your insurance says you have to , then I'd say, quit once you have the procedure not before. If your situation is like mine, you don't have that option. I had to pass a nicotine test for my insurance to cover my surgery and I had to b clean 6 weeks at least to pass nicotine for my insurance. I almost didn't get the surgery. When I learned that I had to quit and become a nonsmoker, I said to hell with that. I was a 2 1/2 pack a day smoker. I couldn't go an hour without a cigg and that in of itself was tough. I did it and yes, I gained a tad and was panicking bc hello, I dind't want them to think that I wasn't a good candidate for this surgery bc I was gaining each week a little . But if your doctor /surgeon is on board with you quitting, then he or she will or should understand, you are going to gain a little when you quit. But make sure they know you are quitting. Don't try to cheat the smoking thing and do it right before surgery, you could risk it being terminated... IF, if there is no nicotine test going to be done, Id say quit after surgery, that way you dont have to worry about them being hesitant bc of your weight gain. Make sense On the smoking and quitting, its tough, its the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but it CAN be done. I swear. Lots of gum. I bought straws cut them in half and used them to mimic the feeling of a cigg. I got on chantix and loads of sugar free gum. I even did therapy and I googled a ton of videos on YouTube. It helped The key to quitting is understanding that this " I am going to die if I don't have a cigg " will pass. Just don't cave in to the urge to go and pick up a cigg. IT will pass. The addiction tells us we will die or wont' make it if we don't have a smoke, but it's a lie I hope this information helps I quit on July 25, 2017. I did it early bc I wanted to give myself time for relapses before surgery date Dec 11, 2017. Fortunately, I never had one You can do this It's been almost 11 months for me. I miss it. You will always want a cigg. But.. the degree will pass Hugs, Joanna

My stomach is always sending me signals
Ness2045 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My stomach sends me signals ALL day long. I don't know how to interpret them. I don't know if my stomach is empty and I should eat because I'm told I'll no longer receive hunger signals...so what am I feeling? After I eat a little, I still feel my stomach. I don't overeat. I don't know how to explain it. It's sending me signals and wants attention, but I don't know how to make it stop. Before the surgery, I only heard my stomach when I was hungry, and when I fed it I didn't feel it anymore. Now I feel it all the time. It's not in my head; it's physical. It's like a crying baby...I've fed it, burped it, changed it, rocked it, and it's still crying. I don't know what to do. I don't feel sick necessarily...just...off. I just want to feel normal. I'm only three weeks out from my surgery. Did anyone else experience this? Does it go away or get better? I just want to NOT feel my stomach ALL the time. Also, I burp A LOT. After every sip of water, after everything I eat. Does this help shed light on my issues? I'm feeling very lonely...like I'll never feel like a normal person again. Any thoughts on what I'm experiencing would be most appreciated. Thanks. -
I'm nine weeks post op and my nutritionist said if I wanted to do keto now I could. It's exactly what we should be doing, high protein, low carb, good fats. I'm pondering it as I haven't done it before but I have researched it extensively before my surgery and up here " in the country " I have access to getting half a grass fed cow, raising my own chickens, I have my own organic garden, etc. Vermont everything is local, fresh and non gmo etc. BUT it's expensive, hence buying half a cow part. and I applaud and even admire anyone who has had WLS and is vegan, that seems like a lot of work and I am not bashing your choices. I never thought about it as my choice but seeing some of the protein sources they are not as high as traditional meat. Of course i am not a vegan and don't know. Both are lifestyles and choices. I Anyway, good luck with whatever way you want to do. With the no dairy I'm still on the fence, even though i do lactose free milk (fairlife) because its lactose free and has 5 more grams of protein per serving.

This not being able to quote BS is really pissing me off!! @Crcountry - Glad to hear you're doing well! I keep reading "it will get better", I'm sure it will for you too! @YoBL - Woo Hoo! @JayBSoFla - Welcome to the group! I'm sure that was nerve wracking to have that emotional roller coaster. At least it's over soon!! -
Did you feel incomplete after surgery?
YeahOkay31 replied to MizzNewLife's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I get what you are saying. After my surgery I said to my husband, " I no longer come with all the original parts." It is a bit...unsettling. Years ago in my early 20s I toyed around with the idea of being a nurse and was briefly in nursing school. Turns out after the kitty dissection portion of my classes, nursing was not for me. But I digress--one of my professors, an old, crotchety gentleman was asked by a student what were his views on gastric bypasses. He wrote some formula on the board--basically I guess the BMR and said if you burn more calories than you eat, you'll loss weight. Period. And then he followed up by saying, "Never, ever let some one cut you open unnecessarily." I took this to heart for many years and was very anti-WLS, not only because I agreed with his sentiments, but because I had managed to lose over 100 pounds on my own, so I knew what was possible. Years later after watching an HBO doc on obesity I saw how fat people's metabolisms are forever changed by their fatness. It is always going to be harder to lose and keep it off once you are fat. And I thought--that is astronomically unfair! Total BS! That is when I truly started to consider weight loss surgery. Yeah, its sorta a cheat, but our bodies are not playing fair, so why should we? It is scary to think about forever altering one's body and doing an elective procedure, but for some people you pass a point of no return and changing the game (and your body) is the only way to win. If it is any consolation, you won't really know it is gone. -
Breastfeeding right after surgery?
Sleeved36 replied to MizzNewLife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most meds are safe while nursing, bring it up with your team. They should know your situation beforehand bc they can choose safer medications to give you. This could allow you to not have to dump at all. Example: for nausea zofran is better than phenergan if you are nursing. Definately bring your pump. Hospitals have them, but not outside of OB. They could track one down for you, but if the nurses are busy it could take a long time. Some surgical groups want you to be done nursing b4 surgery bc your body will be in starvation mode. That being said, baby is eating other food too and not relying on you for total nutrition so it might be ok. I totally get baby led weaning, it is what I did. One decided to be done at 15 months, the other at 18 months. I started the surgical process as soon as I was done nursing. Even if they make you wait it shouldn't be too long. Unless you plan on nursing until preschool, but that would be another issue for another forum. Lol 😄 -
Had mine removed March 21st and revised to Bypass... wish I had just gone with the bypass back in 2011 and not deal with the crappy band for so long... I didn't have any major complications exactly, I got stuck on foods I shouldn't, couldn't ever get to the "sweet spot", leafy greens hurt to eat, lots of bs overall. But no erosion, slippage, etc. However, when my surgeon went to remove my band, it was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue and took them over 3 times longer to remove than it should have. I have no idea what would have happened if I hadn't had it removed!

I think this is the Mexico forum, but I had originally contacted smart shape two years ago, and then again last week. They are charging $19000 plus you pay for airfare & 1 week hotel stay (if your not from that area) So in the end I opted for Mexico, and I'm scheduled for August. 11th I'm guessing your in BC?

Not Your Typical Pre Op Diet Post
Sleeved36 replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My husband has been supportive through this process. He just loves me for me, doesn't care about a few extra pounds, just doesn't want to be married to a hangry b***h. He doesn't understand bc he is naturally lean and buff. He eats a ton of bad food, works out a little, and still looks like a fitness model. I hate him a little for it. My body has changed a lot over the years. He wears the same size pants as when we married. A little more ear hair tho 😉
