I went through the same thing as you - In Dec 2016 I got the sleeve and lost about 120 lbs in about 6 months. Then over the next few years for various reasons I stopped following the plan and put almost all of it back on. I had revision surgery to a bypass this past November and am down about 75 lbs so far and still losing, best thing I ever did for myself.

EVERYTHING I consume hurts
XtinaDoesIt replied to Amo1377's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you also throwing up? Is the pain acid related? Or is it more of a physical pain. I had acid reflux (still do but now I'm also pregnant so there is that) which made everything I ate feel uncomfortable in my stomach. But I didn't experience any physical pain during digestion. A friend of mine developed really bad ulcers and had to get revision surgery which helped for a bit but then the pain returned. Turns out she also had kidney stones which had to be removed. Not sure if you are a woman, but its very common for women to be dismissed my medical professionals. My friend had to keep going to the ER before someone finally took her seriously. They kept giving her IVs and telling her she was dehydrated. -
Clarification On Revision WeightLoss
Tomo replied to Neubian60466's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
They are averages and unfortunately like the rny, band, vsg... Etc. stalls are common for all of us. It depends on so many factors, like some people are not committed and will live on slider foods and their are others who follow their plan, and some in between who are able to find a good balance. From my understanding, it is your starting weight from your most recent surgery that you go by for calculations (not your sleeve surgery). For me, since my revision to RNY (for gerd) in 8/21, it's been faster weight loss. I weigh less than at my lowest with the sleeve and am still losing despite hitting initial goal awhile ago. I find logging my calories, carbs and protein extremely helpful to look for patterns to adjust, to help awareness, especially during emotionally difficult times. -
VSG to RNY - Not excited
mae7365 replied to stpatty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had RNY revision from VSG for severe reflux in October 2020. Since my revision surgery, I've lost 65 pounds. I had only lost, and sustained a 30 pound loss after VSG. And I haven't had an episode of reflux since surgery. Best decision I ever made! -
Thinking about revision
catwoman7 replied to Ms. Thompson's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
it's done mostly for sleeve patients (usually for severe GERD that can't be controlled medically). They go back in there and convert it to an RNY (gastric bypass) or DS (duodenal switch). (NOTE: it's not common, but what I mean is, people who get revisions are usually sleeve patients) it's kind of rare to do a revision for a gastric bypass, because they have to reverse the whole thing and then do a sleeve or DS. Only a handful of surgeons in the country are qualified to do that particular surgery. I can't imagine converting from an RNY to a sleeve because the RNY is a more powerful surgery. But I've heard of some RNY patients revising to DS, which is even more powerful than the RNY. But again, it's a very complicated surgery, and very few surgeons do it (in these cases, it's usually done for greater weight loss, usually. I can't think of any medical reasons to do it other than further weight loss) -

Clarification On Revision WeightLoss

Everyone is different... Everyone. Revision is something later later on for many end up with issues for example severe heart burn that do the sleeve. Just keep working at it... The weight will come off if you stick to the plan. you may loose more than others or less. your surgery was not that long ago so you still have a decent way to go. -
Clarification On Revision WeightLoss

Can somebody please help me….I’m reading so many different things on revision wls and I’m so confused! I know weight- loss is slower, but it’s been coming off pretty good for me so far (55lbs dwn) since Nov.8th. I’m stalling now for the 2nd week! (Frustrating, but expected). Where the confusing part is how much weight I should expect to loose, my doctor told me I should loose a 100lbs, but my research is stating something in the area of about 60-70lbs, but it’s also stating something about my weight-loss from my previous surgery(btw it was the sleeve). So if I’m to understand correctly I’m only going to loose a total of 100lbs ,including my weight-loss from previous wls? I’m so confused… -
Thinking about revision

I was sleeved in Dec 2016, lost about 120 lbs in 6 months. Then I slacked off and put it almost all back on. Got revision to bypass in Nov 2021, down over 70 lbs so far and still losing - I feel great and my only two regrets are not sticking with the program the first time, and not getting the revision sooner. -
Just had revision

Congratulations on your revision! That's awesome that the surgery went so well and you are managing the pain well. I want to get my lap band removed & get the gastric bypass at the same time. The surgeon's office that I called said the doctor only does one surgery at a time. I'd have to wait to get the band removed and wait for three months before he would do the gastric bypass. I don't want to go through two surgeries and my insurance will only pay for one surgery "per lifetime". If you don't mind sharing, what did your surgeon charge for the two procedures? I've read it can cost around 10-12k to remove the band and 20-25k for a gastric bypass. I'm sure it has to be cheaper to do both at the same time then do the two operations separately. Thanks for any info you can provide! Holly Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app -

VSG to RNY - Not excited
Guest replied to stpatty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am - not "may be", am - biased, but there's no way MGB won't overtake RNY at some point. Higher weight loss, fewer complications, simpler surgery, easily revisable and reversible in study after study over a 25 year period. -

VSG pretty much replaced the lapband a few years ago as the non-RNY option. It was still pretty new when I had my surgery, so I wasn't sure I wanted to go there (besides the fact I had GERD...). I was a little worried it might become "Lapband 2". I think at this point it's been around long enough to have proven itself - but yes, there do some to be a lot of people who end up revising. -

I have a theory that since VSG is having so many issues with revision due to GERD, that Mexico is now picking up MGB as a new surgery option. But what the hell do I know? 🤣 Hopefully the future successes with MGB in Mexico will catch on here in the US. -

lots of people have done that revision. The thing is, like with VSG, you're going to have to change your habits and follow the program to lose the weight. The surgery will only take you so far. I lost a truckload of weight, but I worked really hard at it. And yes, the revision should at minimum improve, and will likely eradicate, the GERD. btw - weight loss is never as strong or quick with revisions as it is with virgin surgeries, but that said, there are people who've been very successful with revisions. If you are committed, you'll get there. -

Is MGB an option for you at that practice? The weight loss approaches DS, with fewer side effects, and there's a proven great effect with VSG-->MGB revisions. The DS revision wouldn't do anything for your reflux, so that'd be on borrowed time anyway. The MGB could solve it. -

I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to stpatty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I see. DS is very malabsorptive, more so than RNY, so it has a much higher risk of malnutrition and the malaborption of fats hinders absorption of fat soluble vitamins. So I guess in a surgeons mind, the benefits have to outweigh the risks, which is why my surgeon only does it on patients with poorly controlled diabetics. So patient compliance with DS surgery isn't negotiable. I'm having revision due to GERD soon as well. There's many RNY'ers on here that have done exceptionally well with their surgeries. I'm sure they will post about their successes soon. You will do well with RNY if you follow your surgeons program. Best wishes! -

Major Meta Study: Mini Gastric Bypass as revision after Sleeve/Band is highly effective

I am intrested in getting a revision from vsg to mgb. Do you get to choose how long the dr should make your bypass? How small do they make your stomach, the size of vsg stomach or the size of full gastric by pass? Are you guys happy with the results? Do you get less hungry with the mgb as opposed to the vsg or lapband? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -

I was going through my insurance requirements for revision surgery. I found it interesting that for something that supposedly rarely happens, it's a documented reason for revision for sleeve to bypass. 🤔 -

Does your surgeon prescribe B12 injections? I'm pre op for revision right now but with my program I'll have one every month for the first twelve months in an effort to prevent anemia. Maybe your bariatric vitamins don't contain enough iron for you. -

You had reflux with your band and your surgeon revised you to sleeve? I see your revision was recent. I'm curious if you have reflux still but I assume you're on a PPI so it's too soon to know what happened with the reflux. I'm pretty sure I've seen people on this site that had sleeve with a normal bmi that developed GERD and they had to revise to Bypass to cure the GERD. -

Don't over think it, This fear (GERD) drove me to have a melt down right before surgery and to be highly anxious for weeks after surgery. I had reflux before surgery for many years and had been on 20-40 mg of Nexium daily for about 15 years and as my weight got higher so did the occurrence of my reflux to the point of along with the Nexium I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week. fast forward 8 months post op I still take 20 mg Nexium daily but only because I am to scared to tapper off as I remember the rebound reflux from prior to surgery when I would try to come off them and I have to be honest I suck a Gaviscon dual tablet if I get the slightest inkling of reflux which I think half the time is in my head lol. So prior to surgery I told my surgeon reflux was my biggest fear as I didn't want a bypass either and I certainly didn't want to have to have a second surgery, He said the weight loss would reduce the reflux and I think he is right. its just my own fears and thinking about it and sometimes eating the wrong things or too much that causes me get reflux now and its pretty mild. Now I am going to say this and I don't mean any offence to anyone as it is just what I have observed, a lot people who have had revision surgery due to GERD/reflux also seem to have had a substantial weight gain too, now if anyone out there has experienced different I stand corrected but that's what I have noticed. So that is a pretty good incentive for me not to regain. Talk to your surgeon though as he/she is the best to advise you we can only share our experiences -
February 2019 weight loss buds

My sleeve is so unpredictable. I’ll have days where I swear I can eat like a “normal” person and I honestly forget I’m sleeved. Then I’ll have days where a boiled egg fills me up for hours and I have zero interest in eating. What’s even weirder is that my husband- who has NOT had any bari surgery- eats a lot like me and sometimes he runs into restriction. Tonite we had date night and went to one of our favorite pubs. We split a chicken sandwich with fries, each had 1 cocktail and 1 beer. We didn’t even manage to finish half of our halves of the sandwich and also failed to drink over half our beers! We laughed that we were failing so bad at splurging. One thing that is kind of alarming me is that my acid reflux seems to be kicked in overdrive lately. I’m about to really clean up my eating and drinking prepping for this next foot surgery, so I’m hoping to catch a break from the constant heartburn. I really, really, really am happy with where I am and the LAST thing I want is a revision due to this reflux. I love my sleeve— I don’t want a pouch. I don’t have the best tips to remember to drink water bc I guzzle down 2/3 of my daily water before I eat for the first time of the day. I’ll literally have around 60 ounces of water between waking up and eating around 10-11 am, then drink maybe 12-16 more the whole rest of the day. It tends to leave me feeling somewhat dehydrated by bedtime, but bedtime is when I will “treat” myself to my Coke Zero. My hair never really came back. It’s still fairly thin, but I will never regret having the VGS. Good God, I hope the kidney stone thing never happens to me: I’m a wimp when it comes to stuff like that.
