People say Keto .... but do they mean low carb? Keto has high fat, low protein, super low carb. "The general ratio of macros to follow is 70% fats, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates" I don't see how most WLS patients can get to 60 g+ protein, if it only comprises 25% of their calories, especially if they are eating a reasonable amount of calories a day. I also think that 5% calories from carbs is very very hard for most people to sustain long term. The constant counting and sense of deprivation leads people to fall off the wagon.

I think I’ll just not try the Keto thing lol

All I can say is that prior to this, I was eating very well balanced meals. I was also obese and needed to cut carbs to generate a quick change for surgery. I wasn't necessarily eating more than 74grams on purpose. But I was eating less than 20 carbs per day and I still had severe proteinuria. All I'm saying, is that it *can* happen to people. Its not something you can just dismiss. And what I meant by the liver shrinking diet being more extreme than Keto.... in Keto you still get carbs from lactose, more so than the liver shrinking diet. I couldn't eat cheese or yogurt on my liver shrinking diet, but it is OK in a Keto diet.

Download my fitness pal and it will help you with setting up your macros. Macros are the percentage of carbs, fats, and protein intake. I set mine up as 5%carbs, 70% fat and 25% protein. Keto is a low carb, high fat and moderate protein diet

Ash my low carb diet is the same exact amount of protein as when I was doing my prepping nut diet. 74g. Low carb/keto is only EVER originally intended to be "protein ADEQUATE." If you're upping your protein to more than you need, it's not a good thing. And it means you're not doing low carb/keto correctly.

Not exactly Baloney for everyone. I went on a protein strict diet prior to surgery and almost couldn't have surgery because I had temporary proteinuria. It didn't level back out until I started a more balanced diet. The kidney doctor told me specifically that an increase in protein, or heavy protein diet can cause temporary---leading to permanent kidney disease or damage. This happened to me. My doctor told me this. I should say, that this isn't the case for everyone I'm sure. And we all know that pre op diets and liver shrinking diets in general, are the extreme version of "Keto".

Rash anyone? Type 1 diabetic with a sensor and insulin pump too!
rdegryse posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Has anyone experienced a detox rash? 2 months before my sleeve surgery, I met with the dietician. The next day I changed my diet to get used to it, get off caffeine and go through those headaches, I am type 1 diabetic so no sugar wasn't an issue, and just get things going with weight loss. About a week later, I started with a rash on my arms, hips, chest, and legs. I scratch until it bleeds at night so took Benadryl to sleep and stop itching. The more I read, the more I think it's a liver detox rash. The toxins have to come out somehow. I've lost almost 50 pounds since surgery 2 months ago! As my diet progresses, I make sure to eat one serving of starch or carb a day. Small mini taco flour shells, or a few canned veggies. I use Aveno in the shower, plus lotion galore. Skin seems so dry and bumpy even bough I drink a TON of water. Sometimes more than 64 oz a day when it's hot. With people on the keto diet, I am reading about their rash and it sounds just like mine! Any ideas? Steroids slow down healing so I can't take them, plus raise my blood sugar. OH! I am yes a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump with a sensor! My insulin daily usage has went from about 35 units per day down to 18 units per day average. Love my sensor!-

Thank you guys for the input. I read that doing Keto you have to not eat as much protein because it will counter act the Keto and make you gain? Has anyone else heard that? Also, what the hell are “Micros and macros” and why do you need to track those?

Baloney. mr fluffy and I have been Keto for about 90% of the last 18 years. Good news! We still have all our kidneys and have totes normal bun/crest levels!! Hello, I've was sleeved back in May of 2015 and was losing weight but had a stall. I started Keto on 5/30/2018 and have already lost 40 lbs as of today. I love the Keto lifestyle. I would and have recommended this lifestyle to many of my family members and even co-workers. The change in weight has been dramatic and I am always being asked how am I losing the weight. Only draw back is having to buy smaller clothes.

Keto is a great way to lose weight in the short term. Long term, there are strong concerns in the medical community that it could damage your kidneys. Long term research still needs to be done on this. Regain after keto is also an issue. High blood pressure, diabetes and other comorbidities of obesity also damage your kidneys, so keto is sometimes felt to be the lesser of two evils in trying to help people to lose weight....because it does work. Unfortunately, it might work at a price you'll pay later as you age. Have tried keto in the past. Made my BUN go up (kidney function test) and I regained 50 pounds faster than I lost it. Might work well for some people, but keto is definitely not for me. To each, their own. The highest rates of longevity in the world are correlated to people who eat diets high in complex carbs, vegetables, fruits, plant based proteins and fats, and a small amount of lean animal protein. Ultimately, you pay your money and take your chances. Talking to your doctor is a terrific idea.

Vets- I have been following Keto for about 9 months, lost about 48 lbs. Feeling good. I hate the word 'diet' but want your opinions: I'm thinking about changing it up and going completely back to a post-bariatric type eating- low carb and higher protein. I've been tweaking my diet a bit but don't want to screw myself up. I have 10 lbs that I need to lose before some medical testing in about 4 weeks and wondering if going back to low carb/high protein vs Keto would be more successful (by successful I purely mean burn off some fat)?? thoughts?

WHOOP WHOOP!!! 4 years post op, I am finally getting the scale to move again and my regain is officially gone. I was doing some Keto type eating, but now I'm trying to cut back the fat so it's more like a 'bariatric' type eating, just a low carb, high protein thing. I had been losing nicely for a long time then the scale completely stopped. What I THINK was happening is that my body had adjusted to ketosis and I was probably taking in a little too much dietary fat so I wasn't burning my own fat. Now that I've tweaked it my regain has dropped off and I'm back 'on the move'!!!! Hoping for a good 7-10 lb loss over the next month before I have some medical testing

I am pre-surgery, I have five months left until my insurance will approve or deny me for surgery. I am doing keto to maintain/not gain weight before the insurance review. I love meat, cheese, eggs and non starchy veggies - so Keto is easy for me. I don't miss sugar too much, but Atkins makes low carb sweet treats to satisfy that craving. The best part of keto for me is that looking at the nutrition label and identifying if I can eat a certain product is so easy. Total carbs - Fiber - sugar alcohols = net carbs. I track my carbs and calories in Myfitness pal, by editing my macros columns so I can focus on the items I need to pay attention to. I have also found a recipe with cheese, egg and seasonings to make "flatbread". It is deliciously cheesy and I turned that same recipe in to lasagna "noodles" and found a low carb pasta sauce to make a lasagna tonight!

I don’t know if im just comparing myself to everyone else’s journey and weight loss and my mind is strictly on losing so I’m stuck. I just feel like a disappointment to myself and my parents. I got the surgery at 18 and I’m now 19 and I feel like a failure . Please please please help .. oh and any workout routine suggestions will help !

Following here... I had surgery 11.7.17 and my hubby just had his 7.8.18...He's very interested in doing Keto, my eating plan is close but not as strict...it would be helpful if we were on the same plan...save so much $$ and double cooking!

Hi everyone! I’ll be 5 years post op in December from the sleeve. I’ve been able to maintain the same weight for a long time now. What is Keto like? Does anyone currently do this?

DECREASED expenses after the sleeve? Obviously food, but detail is requested

2. While you may not initially spend less, your weight loss may lead to higher earnings. It is so sad, but so much discrimination being overweight. I know I have been looked over because of how I look: http://www.bbc.com/capital/story/20161130-fat-people-earn-less-and-have-a-harder-time-finding-work Thank you both for your responses. I spoke with my MIL who had this surgery yesterday. She told me that one of her deciding factors was her career. I'm a 6'4" male who carries weight very well and have been told by my leadership that my size and demeanor demand attention, so as a big guy, somehow they're saying it doesn't affect me. I know this is unique. That's why I'm trying to focus on the things that really matter--my health, enjoying my kids' youth, being around to watch my children grow up, and finally be comfortable in my own skin. This thread has been helpful to me. Based on what I'm reading, I might not experience that much decrease in spending, but I really shouldn't see an increase. As a person who's been eating keto off an on for a long time, I'm used to expensive grocery bills. Hopefully the quantity I buy will decrease. I think I have enough protein powder to last me a few months as is. -
Just started keto. Not sure if I am doing it right. I grave chips and candy bars all last night. So I made cheese eggs and sausages. I read up on it but think I am failing at it. I am 7 years post, and gained about 20lbs. I want it off.

New study, that fat is the cause of adiposity

True. But we should also pay attention to history. If we've tried something in the past, and had great success that wasn't sustainable....maybe we need to rethink it? I'm not a stranger to keto, btw....I lost 50 pounds on it once upon a time in three months... and regained it just as fast. Keto made me feel wretched...I had actual dreams about food while on it, which was very weird...and my cravings for junk were incredibly intense and unpleasant. When I fell off the wagon, I kinda lost my mind...went nuts and made up for lost time. It wasn't pretty. You are dead right....to each their own. And I know some folks do have luck with high protein carb restrictive diets. But for me? Carb restrictive diets were a recipe for me to fall off a cliff. Also, my BUN went up (my kidney function suffered because they had to work so much harder dealing with all that protein) Not saying I haven't fallen off the wagon with my current diet....but when I do...the sensation is way different. I go a little off course, feel stupid, and don't have any problems getting right back in the saddle. I stall for a day or two, but don't really gain. Falling off Keto, I'd gain five pounds instantaneously and went completely out of control...it just snowballed. I will never do that to myself again. Great apes eat fruit, fiber and lots of plant based protein. I'm a great ape, not a lion. -
Im definitely going through the "keto flu", but im starting to feel better. Last night I felt like dying, neck pain, headache was the worst day ever. But today! Im starting to feel better, and im really really thankful for that. I need to get a scale and start keeping track too. Im at my surgeons office weighing in so much I figured I could wait to buy one LOL!

I think something is wrong with her for making someone else feel like there is something wrong with them. I think you know your body best and only you can and should do what’s best for you.. I have little to no support with the exception of my fiancé supporting.. I have family and friends telling me that I should just workout because I’ve lost 31 lbs on my own(not keto diet) just low fat low carb and high protein diet.. they don’t understand that it’s not about them and that it’s not about just losing weight (there’s a lot of reasons ) everyone’s reason is different (personally, I have been limited to doing thing with my daughter) I’d like to sit on the floor with her and play games , go on field trips with her at school..etc.. the list goes on. I’ve already told a couple people to suck me sideways and keep their stupid comments to themselves. So with that being said? .. no, I don’t think there is anything wrong with you. That lady needs to just shut up and find something better to do with herself than to put others down.

So glad I'm not the only one being slammed with keto talk! Like I said, it's great for her and I'm happy she's doing it but the conversation is very stale at this point!

Omg so funny I have a friend that was once interested in having VSG surgery until she found out that she wouldn’t qualify for it. So now she does the keto diet and every day all the time she will call me to brag about saying how much weight she’s losing how she so happy with this new diet which is great. I encourage her all the time to stay on track but don’t get me wrong sometimes I’m like shut the f**k up this is all I hear Keto for hours I try changing subject she goes right back .she will not stop talking about Keto drives me crazy and she takes pleasure doing it. Now she talks down about me having surgery.
