July 2023 buddies
Midwest Grateful replied to LibrarianErin's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Day 8 of my 14-day liquid diet/liver cleanse. It's not as bad as I thought. I made sure no food is sitting in clear sight, which helps a lot. And it's a good thing I like sugar-free Jello! Looking forward to getting this surgery behind me. I'm scheduled for gastric bypass next Tuesday, with the sleeve as a Plan B (depending on how extensive the scar tissue is from previous abdominal surgeries). Onward! Hope everyone is doing well! -
Scar Tissue From Previous Abdominal Surgeries
Midwest Grateful replied to Midwest Grateful's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@GreenTealael, @WanderingLass, @CarmenG, & @pintsizedmallrat... Thank you! I appreciate your feedback. Like most of you I had my gallbladder removed (in 2017). Plus many years ago I had two cesareans, hysterectomy/oophorectomy, and two hernia repairs (the doctor who did an emergency oophorectomy cut through my first hernia repair so it had to later be redone). I'm expecting quite a bit of scar tissue. So, your comments are helpful. Amazing stories...I'm glad things worked out for you all! 💕 My surgeon did mention if the scar tissue is attached to the bowel (or small intestine, etc.) and it's too risky to work lower in the abdomen as necessary for the gastric bypass, then he will do the sleeve where he stays higher in the abdomen. I get that. I hope you're all doing well now. WanderingLass, you JUST had your surgery, so I hope you're healing quickly. And CarmenG, you just had surgery last month. All the best to you! -
Scar Tissue From Previous Abdominal Surgeries
CarmenG replied to Midwest Grateful's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yep. I got sleeved in 2009, and in 2011, I lost my gall bladder. These days, gall bladder surgeries are laparoscopic. However, when the surgeon put a camera into my belly button to take a look, he said he couldn't see well enough because of the sleeve scar tissue. He ended up giving me an emergency open gall bladder surgery. He said he didn't have time to wake me up and ask for permission because it was dilated to 11cm and I was septic. I actually told my revision surgeon the same thing you did about the sleeve and gall bladder scar tissue he would encounter. He told me the same thing as your doc. He said it shouldn't be a problem and that he would remove scar tissue if he had to. My revision surgery last month was laparoscopic and robot-assisted. -
Scar Tissue From Previous Abdominal Surgeries
Midwest Grateful posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for gastric bypass on July 25th. I mentioned to my surgeon today that I was concerned he might run into a lot of scar tissue (I've had a few abdominal surgeries in the past). He informed me he'll clean up old scar tissue, but if he sees excess scarring that poses a concern he may opt to do a sleeve as a Plan B. I told him I trust his judgment. I'm curious. Anyone here have old scar tissue cause a problem? -
That's fantastic! I took one like that in 2013 after a 149 lb loss. The pants were a size 32, and my sister and I each got into one leg of the pants and had our picture taken. It was the most amazing feeling in the world! Unfortunately, I lost myself and ruined all the hard work I'd done by 2021. Now, I'm starting my journey again with a revision to a bypass. I hope and pray that I can take another picture just like this in a few years. Congratulations!

I was sleeved in 2016, and due to circumstances, I could not control, death in my family of three people, I started gaining weight. I lost my husband in 2021 to a heart attack. I have decided to go with gastric bypass to take care of my GERD.© Michael Miller

4 yrs post VSG to RNY
catwoman7 replied to GreenTealael's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm not a revision patient, just an eight-years-out RNY patient, but I can eat bread products now (have been able to for awhile), but I don't eat a lot of them since they sit in my stomach like a brick and stay there for awhile. I don't think I ate any of them at all the first year or two, though. -

I had raging GERD pre-surgery, and while the GERD has pretty much gone post-op, I'm so prone to developing ulcers that I'm still on 40mg of Pantoprazole almost two years out. The plan was for me to wean off Pantoprazole, but when I do, I get a fresh ulcer. I have a pooling of bile in the bottom of what's left of my stomach, which I suspect is at least contributing to it (and I still get "gallstone attacks" despite no longer having a gallbladder). Unfortunately, it's not a sure thing that a bypass will cure GERD, which sucks. 100% feel for you. It's just relentless complications. Hope your surgeon has some idea. -

4 yrs post VSG to RNY
GreenTealael replied to GreenTealael's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I take a multivitamin and calcium regularly (not everyday if I am being honest because sometimes I forget) I add everything else periodically because I can usually feel when I need something like more b12/iron/Vit D. They are either small tablets or some version of a chewable. My plan didn’t require that I stay away from bread products and I despise soft breads so I didn’t have an issue tolerating the types I liked. Since your plan does ask for you to avoid it, I would. I still don’t chew gum, eat popcorn or drink carbonated beverages because those were in my original instructions 6 yrs ago. Abstaining for now won’t hurt you. Revisit the conversation with your surgeon at your 6 month follow up. Congrats on the revision -

Congratulations! That's so awesome. I'm 27 days post op with a revision from a 14-yr-old sleeve to a bypass. I was wondering what kind of vitamin routine you use. Also, at what point (like what month out) were you able to eat a little bread or tortilla? I know we shouldn't, but it is really completely off limits forever? The literature I was given says not to eat it because it "can become a ball of dough in your stomach." -

Ah man. I had GERD before surgery - that's one of the reasons why I had a bypass - because I didn't want to make it worse. But, I'm still on the Omeprazole - 9 months post op. I've tried to get off of it, but I have issues when I do. I reckon I'll probably be taking it forever. -
July 15th marked my 4th year post VSG to RNY I started with VSG in 2017 and was converted to RNY IN 2019. There seems to be more revision post lately but not a lot of long term revisioners or info floating around so feel free to ask me anything!

I'm really upset. I'll be calling the doctor asap tomorrow to see if we can figure out what on earth is going on. I don't know what else to do. I don't have a hernia or anything, gall bladder was removed in 97, never had any reflux or gerd before the sleeve, and this revision was supposed to fix the problem. Not sure what can be done now, but hopefully we can figure something out. I try to stay positive about most things, but this is really too much now. -
With the sleeve, the 30/30 rule between fluids and solids is so that you do not fill up too quickly without getting in all of your nutrition. With the bypass, it's for that reason, but also so that the water doesn't push the food through the bowels too quickly causing dumping syndrome. Admittedly, eating soon after drinking is much easier than drinking after eating. What I ended up doing when I would go out was have my alcoholic drink and then eat. I also went from mixed drinks full of juice, soda, ice to just 1 or 2 straight shots of silver tequila or vodka. It kinda helped because I'd have my shots, feel my buzz, enjoy the company, and then eat (which would kill my buzz). It kinda worked out except that it got way too easy, and I started preferring drinking to eating. My meal wound end up being may be three bites/forkfuls of food because my sleeve was full of fluid (alcohol). But even if it'd been water, I still wasn't getting everything in like I was supposed to.

Thank you for your response. I live in FL and they still do the lap band here. Anyone ever have a sleeve revision?

Awwwww man. I’ve never responded to your posts about your acid reflux issues, but I’ve read them and I was really, really hoping the revision would immediately bring you some relief. It stinks that it still seems to be a problem, but it’s early, right? Maybe a little time? I hope something works for you! -

I personally never had it past week 4, and what little I had was barely there. Most people notice it after they start solids. I didn't. I had my revision to bypass on the 28th and I'm on week 3 foods and feel no restriction. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.

So as you all know, I had my revision from sleeve to bypass on June 28th because of severe gerd, esophagitis, gastritis, and a ton of pre-cancerous polyps all through my stomach. I was put on 80mg of Nexium daily and still had a lot of pain and break through gerd issues. After the revision, the PPI was lowered to 40mg daily for 2 weeks and then on weeks 3 and 4, go to 40mg every other day and then completely stop at the beginning of week 5. Well here I am, doing the evry other day, and I had horrible gerd today!!! My throat was burning, my esophagus felt like I had acid in it, and I was MISERABLE. I had to take a Nexium (today was a day not to take it) and follow it up an hour later with a Pepcid before it went away. WTH????? I never ever had heartburn or gerd before the sleeve. Got the revision because it was supposed to fix it, and here I am, still dealing with it!!!!!!! I'm so over this. I'm not eating anything bad, following my diet to the letter, and I can't catch a break.

I'm 50 and just had my bypass July 5th. So far pain wise it's much easier than I could hope for. I lost 13 pound pre surgery and as of now day 11 post surgery I've lost 16 pounds.
-
lapband? It's an outdated surgery that was largely replaced by the sleeve. You might be hard pressed to find a surgeon who'll even place them anymore - most don't because there were too many complications with them. Most people who revise from sleeve go with RNY or DS.

Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO
CarmenG replied to cocoduan's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm also wondering. I'm 4 weeks post-op. Everything I've read, however, says that in the first 2-3 months it should be anywhere between 300-600 cal. I've set my limit at 500 (which includes 75 cal and 21 carbs from vitamins) because I'm eating solids now and those tuna, chicken, and beef servings are pretty high in cal even though I don't exceed 1/2 cup servings of anything. I'm a revision sleeve to bypass. I use Baritastic to document my cal, protein, carbs, fat, calcium, and H2O. I don't have another appointment until July 24th. Every doctor, though, has different opinions about our nutrition. Your best bet would be to contact the doc's office and just ask. I should probably do the same, lol! -
Hi, I had a gastric sleeve done in 2013. I lost 110 lbs and was at goal. Then my mom passed unexpectedly in 2014. I gained 75 lbs back. I have struggled trying to lose it. I have tried Noom and Keto and low carb...failed all. I'm contemplating a revision or a lap band. Any insights out there?
