Pre-Op Diet for Initial Weight Loss
elforman replied to Kay07's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely nothing. That's one of the better parts about doing keto. I was given a daily number of grams of expect protein intake which I know I've exceeded more than a few times. In theory there's a ratio of calorie sources, something like 40% from protein, 50% from fat and 10% from carbs (please don't trust me, look it up), but honestly, I'm not following that. I'm just keeping carbs to a very low level and the rest pretty much takes care of itself. A few times after I felt like I ate too much, even without carbs, I just have four protein shakes the next day. Granted, just because this works for me doesn't mean it'll work for everyone, so please check in with your nutritionist. Meanwhile, congratulations and keep up the good work. -
Pre-Op Diet for Initial Weight Loss

Keto is low carb (usually less than 30g), moderate protein (bc protein unused turns to sugar, and high fat. The idea is that you starve out of carbs so that your body burns fat for fuel. It works! I recommend Maria emmerich’s website and cookbooks. She explains it well. You have to remember that carbs in non starchy veggies are a little different than refined sugar and bread carbs in that they have fiber. -

Exactly as @SpartanMaker & @i bypassedmyphatass said. Diets are for the short term not the long term. The bariatric diet is devised for a specific short term purpose. While it is restrictive in the first weeks to support your healing, it does encourage you to slowly add more nutritional sources as you progress. One of the things you’ll do as you near maintenance is work out how you want to eat for the long term. Not a ‘diet’ but a sustainable way of eating that works for you & meets the needs of your body. I find it amusing when people consider our bariatric post surgery diet is high protein. It really is just focussed on protein first. Most of us are advised to consume 60g of protein while losing. In actuality, this is less than the daily recommended amount - 1g of protein per 0.8kg for our weight at that time. (Though I was told by my dietician as a woman in her 50s I should be having 1g per 1kg of weight.) So at my surgery, when I was about 85kg I should have been eating 68g - 85g of protein. Don’t know about you but before I started this process I never ate any where near the recommended amount of protein I needed. Remember if there was a single diet that worked for everyone, no one would be obese & we’d all eat exactly the same way. Diets are too restrictive to be be sustainable. That’s why we could lose weight on a diet but could never keep it off. I don’t follow a ‘diet’ at all now. I worked out what foods provide the nutrition I need, enable me to maintain without restricting my life & keep my body happy. Like, I aim to eat 70g of protein because of my absorption issue & I avoid bread, pasta, rice & potato because they sit heavily in my tummy. You’ll work out a way of eating that works for you too. Do your own research about nutrition. Start now so as you add new foods back into your diet you are making healthier choices & to see how your body responds to them. Remember any pro diet sites (keto, Atkins, etc.) will only give you biased information about how great & wonderful that diet is. Just ensure you’re eating a range of foods to satisfy your nutritional needs. In the meantime, follow your plan & the advice of your dietician & surgeon & listen to your body. -
Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
temkins replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
That was my concern as well for 2 last years - after a multitude of mindless diets, meal plans and reckless food attitude I was absolutely sure my metabolism is in ruins. Until recently I managed to finally measure it with a doctor and have learnt that my basal metabolic rate is in fact 2700-2800 /day. Stalls may occur while the body shifts from one energy mode to another, while being in stress, some environmental issues etc etc. In fact IF might help to pass the stall. If 16-8 doesn't work after 2 weeks, try 16-8 + low carb / keto diet - just to see what works best. It doesn't mean you have to keep going on IF+keto, you'll just pass the stall phase. -

IF Strikes again back down to 156 after a few days of 16:8, 18:6. Happy to see it will be my maintenance tool. Also, psyllium husk in a keto friendly bread I made sat like a log in my sleeve but cleans the plumbing -

If you’re not eating low carb now, I’d suggest trying keto. I usually drop 5-6 pounds in my first week because of the water weight -
Food advice - travelling to the US

Try your best to stick with fresh food- and ask for no sugar in sauces at restaurants. There is a HUGE diet culture here, dont be fooled by labels that say low carb or keto- check the numbers on the back of boxes/package for sure if you do chose to eat any packaged foods. -
How are you doing on pre op diet...im drinking the protein drinks as instructed and I gained 2pds I pray this does not effect my surgery I've lost weight all along the way been doing keto so I'm not sure if I stalled...anyone have this issue also

There are lots of different pre surgery diets. Mine was 2 weeks keto. But generally they’re either two shakes & one meal or three shakes only. With these the first week (or there abouts) seems to be the most difficult. You’re breaking lots of habits, cravings & addictions (caffeine, sugar). Plus if food was a comfort for you this is also ‘taken away’ from you so it can be more challenging because of the emotional/psychological roller coaster. It’s all so very worth it though.

Dietitians need to ask enough questions to understand where you ARE, both with your ability to prepare your own food and your overall understanding of nutrition. It sounds like you and your dietitian are not on the same page and she is assuming you understand things they are not explaining well. There are a lot of ways to reach 60g of protein in a day that will be too high in fat, calories, and carbs to result in weight loss. Sometimes I feel like the heavy, heavy emphasis on protein does us a disservice, especially when there are so many high-protein "convenience foods" that are high in fat (and calories) to cater to Keto dieters (hello, Quest cookies! 230 calories! that's not a snack, that's a meal). Protein is a big component but in the absence of other, concrete advice about WHAT to actually eat, if you don't have a huge knowledge base of nutrition, it's easy to get lost.

Good morning, I finally decided to take the step and do a surgery consult. I’ve been considering surgery for 10 years. I tried to talk to my sister about it and she told me I’m mentally I’ll and need to do counseling, that I have PTSD and if I just do counseling I’ll lose weight. Trust me I’ve lost weight before with diets and behavior modification! Then tells me I just need to do keto (also did that I need more veggies and fruits in my life). Anyone have not supportive family? I guess I’m sort of over working so hard (no I’m not constantly eating candy, chips and fast food like everyone says to me) and getting nowhere. About me: 41, she/her, work as a research RN, no kids, never married, 2 dogs. Living the fun life in the desert of Arizona.

How are you feeling? I start mine next Tuesday and I won't lie, I'm nervous. Mine is a "liver shrinking diet" so it looks like a protein-shake heavy keto diet. Should be OK. I'm more worried about the liquid and puree stages but one baby step at a time I guess! -
go for it, it lowers cholesterol, reduces fatty liver etc look up The Diet Doctor he is a swedish medical dr doing fab things with keto, website is excellent

Getting sleeved today! 24 April 2017
Cass Elliot replied to Propo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Great of you to check in and update us on progress! I love hearing how it is going. I am also curious about the pasta (supposed to expand in your stomach) but I also feel like almost any food is possible, it's just the quantity. There's a WLS master on this site who talks about the KETO diet alot and he is a long way into this process. I like the keto because fat is encouraged (especially certain types) and protein. Check it out under Keto or InsideMatchesOutside (his name) or something like that. I am happy and excited because the weight continues to come off - not weighing myself all the time and sometimes I eat something yummy (cheesecake for example) and I still loose. I'm just not eating that much of anything and I try really hard to get my protein. It's so motivating to get the results! I still need to walk more (and I will). It's been crazy busy with my 3 kids - prom and all kinds of exciting stuff. But tonight I made an awesome soup and I'm enjoying some quiet! Wishing you well and keep the updates coming!! Thanks Cass -
That was an ave day for me for 18 years as low carb. I did dr Atkins '72 diet, the original keto diet. People call keto today is super aggressive with fat at75% or higher. people use keto and low carb interchangeably. I believe if u are under about 40-50g of daily carbs u r in ketosis. Some can be closer to 70 and still letogenic. You can also be super low calorie and be ketogenic. i presently ave between 650-850 Cala on most days. I eat from 60-70g protein; roughly 25-30g net carbs;and around 30g of fat per day. I am ketogenic not only due to carb and protein suppression but also due to low calories.

This is a thread about Keto, not about @FluffyChix This post was not directed at you, but at Keto in general.
-
@sillykitty No, quite the contrary, these 3-4 years in maintenance on realfood keto have been the longest time in my adult life that I’ve been able to live without binge eating. Which is why I’m sure it’s the best woe for me also now after having the sleeve.

People say Keto .... but do they mean low carb? Keto has high fat, low protein, super low carb. "The general ratio of macros to follow is 70% fats, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates" I don't see how most WLS patients can get to 60 g+ protein, if it only comprises 25% of their calories, especially if they are eating a reasonable amount of calories a day. I also think that 5% calories from carbs is very very hard for most people to sustain long term. The constant counting and sense of deprivation leads people to fall off the wagon.

You've been doing this version of Keto since 2013? Has it helped you lose or maintain, or was it to stabilize health issues? Was it hard to maintain for years at a time? VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

Thank you guys for the input. I read that doing Keto you have to not eat as much protein because it will counter act the Keto and make you gain? Has anyone else heard that? Also, what the hell are “Micros and macros” and why do you need to track those?

I think I’ll just not try the Keto thing lol

Isn’t the fat in keto meant to make you feel full for longer? Is it that our bodies can’t digest fat now, or that the fat is extra calories and possible weight gain?

ADVICE FROM A 10 YEAR VETERAN
myfanwymoi replied to Queen of Crop's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was 234 at heaviest 118 at lightest and am now (4 and a quarter years post op) 149. Yes - lockdown but more than that it’s sugar addiction. At 114 I had no bum or tits or shape and people said I looked gaunt and old but I LOVED being skinny. I’m now a size 8-10 uk - up from a low 6 and definitely not fat or even really overweight. My bmi is maybe a tad over but I’ve always been solid - short legs long back- great build for a hod carrier an ex once told me!!! so I need to deal but it’s sugar I need to deal with. I go in and off IF and Keto but constantly relapse with sugar. I’m weaning off just now and am going to aim for IF on work days (my tummy is v hair trigger so that helps avoid leaving a classroom mid lesson. the struggle is real. I’m a recovering alcoholic and sugar hits the same button. I’m depressed, sedentary, lonely but I’m not giving up. It’s great to hear from people who’ve kept weight off and I’d like too to hear how you get it off again befor it’s all back... on a positive note I have boobs and a bum again! -
Highly Skeptical of Surgeon's Pre-Op Diet
Arabesque replied to devotion's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There’s a lot of variations in the pre surgery diets. Mine was real food too - specifically keto. So I ate meat, eggs, full fat dairy, low carbs, non starchy vegetables & berries. Yours sounds like it may be keto or similar to keto too. My surgeon requires different patients to follow different pre surgery diets based on various factors - weight, blood work, results from various medical tests, etc. Sometimes the diet is not only to reduce the fat around your liver, but to lose some weight before surgery, break some addictions/cravings (caffeine, sugar, carbs, etc.) & /or get you thinking about what you eat. Best advice is to follow the plan you’ve been given.
