Am I the ONLY one who wasn’t given a diet plan?? I was given a rough caloric intake count and that’s IT. I’m still stuck at 145- but yes I eat mostly anything I want in tiny amounts- except alcohol of course. I always thought people gained weight from alcohol or maybe over stuffing them self? After gastric bypass- so far, there’s no way of eating enough to gain more than 1 lb of water weight... I know this can change in 5 years?? Also- to break plateau I was thinking of All liquid protein and some chicken and lettuce? I cannot go without all sugars and carbs... it makes me crazy ... however I do eat sugar from berries. Now sure what else to try. I can’t digest most animal meats still- so anything Keto just won’t work... too much cheese won’t work either. Too bad people have to be so mean to each other and take things with such a heavy heart... 🤷🏻♀️😐💜💜💜

@Creekimp13 I’m not jumping on anyone here just responding to your original comment. My nutritionist has advised us to not do Keto after surgery. It’s not sustainable and the brain actually needs about 40-50 net carbs to even function properly mind you don’t take my word on this this is just one of the largest studies done by Johns Hopkins over a 30 year period. Also Ketosis is really bad for keeping your blood levels safe especially for former diabetics

Hmmm. This is a forum of wls people finding their way to goal in whatever manner works for them and seeking support and sometimes answers from the same pool that they are in. Since there is no way science has mastered the perfect way to do this, the vast experiment continues. I do think there is a lot of crap on here at times with some good advice. When I read about regains, it seems to be caused by our inability to control emotional eating or age-related metabolic changes that science hasn't helped us solve yet. Keto or lower carb plans DO WORK for many obese/formerly obese that regained, it's the not continuing a plan that derails people. There are some successes with moderate plans, but not as many long term wls people use that approach. i fail to see how getting riled up about any of it is productive. I also cannot give advice to any vet that has had a regain and wants to start over - I can encourage them. Since I am sleeved less than a year and in no position to tell a vet what plan works for them, as I am still figuring myself out.

What to tell coworkers?
AdiosAnnie300 replied to chelsey211's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did something very similar. I have not told anyone but my husband and best friend. I have been very public about my meal planning and doing modified Keto. I post my weight loss milestones. No needs to know that I had surgery to give me a better tool. I know some people would say I took the easy way out. I told my work I needed to have. Minor surgery for a reoccurring medical condition. For all they know it was to fix a Hemmeroid. -
"Ketovangelists"!! I'm dying!!! LOL. I'm totally stealing that to start calling my "Keto is the only way" coworkers! Talking about "egg fasts" and "carnivore diet" No. Just no.

Dear Tracy, All the well wishers with idiotic comments are exactly the reason I only told my husband, mom, and two close family friends since they would notice when eating meals. That being said, if we could have lost the weight under less severe measures, why would we have surgery!?! Silly question. The pre-op diet was the hardest part for me, and I ended up just doing Keto. Trust that it gets better, and a few months down the road, the hard part will be behind you. How are you doing?
-
No. Read what I wrote again. I'm saying if people fail repeatedly on low cal and keto they need better advice than "you need to do low cal and keto." I absolutely agree that there is no "one size fits all" which is why the same advice over and over (even when linked to previous multiple failures) seems so tedious to me.

I unfortunately had the balloon in 2016. I lost a total of 20 pounds mostly in the beginning. After I had it removed I immediately gained back the 20 pounds. After it is removed you have a big void in your stomach which was immediately replaced with over eating. To this day I am a bit embarrassed that I spent so much money on a procedure that did not work. I am now on the keto diet and have lost nearly as much as I did with the balloon. Best of luck to you.

yes. Indeed I am looking for someone still. Since my original post, I have visited my doctor for month 2 of 7 required before I can submit for authorization with my insurance. My doctor has advised me to try a keto based diet. Ordinarily this would be awesome for me. but for whatever reason I can't seem to stop craving the things I can't have: fruit, juice, sweets, snacks, breads. But I keep trying. Had a first cheat day this past day. had some pasta and pie. but I monitored my portions so that made me feel better. Back to the diet now. I have been regularly getting my 7k steps in. Most days I have closer to 10k steps. So I been doing decent enough on my activity aspect of all this. I just need to nail down this nutrition side. lol. I don't know what we can and can't share on this site as far as personal info goes, or how that works. do you?

@sillykitty No, quite the contrary, these 3-4 years in maintenance on realfood keto have been the longest time in my adult life that I’ve been able to live without binge eating. Which is why I’m sure it’s the best woe for me also now after having the sleeve.

Damn i thought i replied but it never up loaded...https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/protein-for-vegans-vegetariansPea protein, hemp hearts, tofu, chia, etc. Not single source. Its going to cost you calorically but it can be done. Usually you have to plan very well and make your own foods. Example if you make falafel you can add ground hemp hearts, chia seeds, flax, pea protein, spices, etc. Stir fry mushrooms with fluffed buckwheat and quinoa. Eat with a hummus spread. You will work harder (especially if you don't like legumes) but its possible. I have come to the very real conclusion that my time with animal protein is almost over, but I'm interested in keto, I stopped by to see if I could do it for a short burst then try to vegetarian/vegan keto for a burst to break through anticipated plateaus VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

@sleeve23may2018 I have a sincere question. Do you think the restrictions of keto/low carb exacerbated your binge eating?
-
Actually I started in January 2013 with the simple Dietdoctor.com protocol. I started at 251 lbs and by October 2013 I was down to 178 lbs, (height 5'7") which I was able to maintain for 3-4 years with no major effort on my part. My high blood pressure normalized within months after startin this woe, my skin got better, my moods got better ect. I just followed the Dietdoctor's keep your carbs low and eat real food protocol. But as years got by my underlying binge eating disorder got the best of me and first I started binging on keto foods and soon even eating junk-food again and of-course I gained some weight. I found ketogains last summer and was able to lose 25 lbs in a month or two, but started binging again until I was back up at 224 lbs when I decided to have my sleeve in May this year. I'm a self pay patient and live in a European country. Now, 8 weeks post op I'm down to 187 lbs, my goal is to get to 154 lbs. Although my binge eating failed my life's so far best weight loss effort aka keto, I can't blame this on the diet. Obesity and food addiction is a complex disease. Sensible keto is a great way to eat healthy nutritious real food and my sleeve is a great tool to help me keep myself on track. 2keto dudes actually have a great podcast episode dedicated to weight loss surgery and keto, where three lovely ladies share their experience with keto and sleeve surgery: http://2ketodudes.com/show.aspx?episode=52

You've been doing this version of Keto since 2013? Has it helped you lose or maintain, or was it to stabilize health issues? Was it hard to maintain for years at a time? VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

The best place for information about keto is probably Ketogains.com. They have a facebook group and a webpage with a very good macro calculator. They're very science based and won't take any BS. They don't promote macro percentages or super high fat. Instead they track their macros in grams. Essentially keeping carbs below 50 grams per day or rather 20 grams will put your body into a ketogenic state. Then you have to have your adequate protein. Not too much, not too little, actually their protein recommendation is the same as the bariatric one. If your body is already high fat you don't need to consume extra high fat. Which is also pretty much the post op bariatric diet anyway. Eat your protein first, then have some vegetables and in the case of keto, if you have room left in your post-op sleeve/pouch, you fill it with good fats, not starches. Some olive oil or butter for cooking the vegetables, meat or eggs, half an avocado, a handful of nuts or olives etc. I'm keto since 2013 and I find the true and real keto very healthful and good nutrition. The problem is, keto has become very mainstream and lots of people want to make money on it and start spreading these absurd versions of keto that won't get you closer to your goals. "Eat fat to lose fat." You really don't have to eat 85% fat to make ketones aka be ketogenic, you just have to limit your carbs, eat adequate protein and non starchy vegetables. For example my macros today, 8 weeks after having the sleeve are 21 g carbs, 94 g protein, 48 g fat, 896 kcal. 37 lbs lost so far.

Man, I just wanted some info on keto and I feel like I’m reading an old school MySpace argument lol. Does anyone else have any good resources to find info on it? I just watched The Magic Pill on Netflix, and of course took it with a grain of salt, because I’m not sure who the documentary was funded by, but it definitely piqued my interest.

This is a thread about Keto, not about @FluffyChix This post was not directed at you, but at Keto in general.

I've told u I don't do the "keto" diet as it's defined. If I ate anywhere near that fat level I would be so sick. I don't do well with high fat. Now please excuse me but I'm done being grilled and being made to defend my dietary choices.

Thanks for clarifying. Low carb and keto are definitely not the same diets, and I wish they wouldn't be used interchangeably. Low carb can certainly make sense. Many WLS patients are low carb without really trying, just by eating protein first, veggies second and carbs last, as most of us are told to. I think your last point is one that is often missed. If you're losing weight, by definition you're in ketosis, no matter your carb intake. "Ketosis describes the metabolic state whereby the body converts fat stores into energy, releasing ketones in the process"

So I've done that math of what true Keto macros look like calorie wise, assuming 60 g of protein Protein 25% - 60g - 240 calories Carbs 5% - 12g - 48 calories Fat 70% - 75g - 672 calories Total 960 calories Total consumed by weight 147 g = 5.2 oz I totally fail to understand how this is a sound diet for a WLS patient. That is an incredible low amount of carbs, my calcium supplements almost total that alone, one would basically need to eliminate dairy. That is a lot of fat to consume (1/3 cup of oil). All the while only being just over 5 oz of food.

That was an ave day for me for 18 years as low carb. I did dr Atkins '72 diet, the original keto diet. People call keto today is super aggressive with fat at75% or higher. people use keto and low carb interchangeably. I believe if u are under about 40-50g of daily carbs u r in ketosis. Some can be closer to 70 and still letogenic. You can also be super low calorie and be ketogenic. i presently ave between 650-850 Cala on most days. I eat from 60-70g protein; roughly 25-30g net carbs;and around 30g of fat per day. I am ketogenic not only due to carb and protein suppression but also due to low calories.

Again ... are people saying Keto, when they mean low carb? @FluffyChix You've generously posted lots of info about your diet on here, pics, recipes, the number of calories you eat. It doesn't look like keto to me. By what you just wrote: 60 g protein = 240 calories 25 g carbs = 100 calories 60% of cals fom fat = 850 calories Total = 1190 calories The math doesn't add up to me, since you've said you keep your calories lower than that?

There are two things that always get heated between Creek and Fluffy... keto and Dr. Atkins... it's best that it stops before someone's feelings get hurt beyond repair. There are plenty of people who can speak to the love of Keto.

My liver and kidney numbers have been picture perfect since weight loss surgery. The only time they ever spiked was when I was on keto. To each their own, Fluff....but for having been eating high protein low carbs for the past 18 years as you've stated....you have a hell of a lot of health problems. Cancer, had to be put back on diuretics after surgery, heart issues. Sorry girl...but no thanks. Not saying there's a conclusive link there, and I know you've gotta do what works for you..........but I'm just as happy to be eating Carb Rich Mayo Clinic Diet...off all my meds (save thyroid) and have perfect labs every time.
