    Hormoes Gone Wild......

I was told by my doctor that when you lots of weight quickly the fat lost releases hormones which can make you emotional and irritable. I know I experienced that when I was losing weight quickly with WLS round one. I recently revised from the band to the sleeve and expect to be experiencing the same again soon.
  2. Good luck to you Patti Sue. Please keep us posted. I go to Dr. Aceves on June 23rd for a band to sleeve revision. It helps to get feedback so I can know what to expect. Best wishes to you.
  3. Yes, I had a revision from band to sleeve. Couldn't stand my band.
  4. Hi Revision buddies! Just a bit of backstory: I had a lapband placed back in fall of 2007, so almost 12 years ago. Unfortunately, I have always struggled with my band when it had fluid in it (vomited frequently, inability to eat most proteins, GERD, could not drink anything that wasn't warm or at minimum room temperature.) My band and I officially "broke up" in 2015. All of the difficulties I had been struggling with had gotten so bad that I had developed acute gastritis, and esophageal spasms due to the GERD and persistent vomiting, which resulted in me having to have all of the fluid removed. While the vomiting every time I ate and esophageal spams stopped, the GERD remained and the last 60 pounds I had managed to keep off after my initial loss, rapidly returned. So here we are in 2019, through an unfortunate incident my husband had earlier in the year, our deductible and out of pocket maximum have been met for the year. The window of opportunity for me to finally end 12 years of GERD and struggle with this band is finally open. I found a surgeon I really am confident in and have had an EGD to check for Barret's and see what kind of shape my stomach was in. I was lucky in that my hernia had not returned and I didn't have any ulcers, but he did notice that even with no fluid in my band, that it seems tight, I'm not really sure what that means, but it would explain why I still struggle with most proteins. At my last appointment, we reviewed my EGD and he was sending the letter to the insurance company. Because my revision would be due to band complications, my insurance doesn't require the 6 months of dieting, psyh visit, etc, just a letter from the surgeon showing medical necessity for the revision. Since I have a history of GERD, we have decided that RnY is the best option. The paperwork was probably sent in sometime after July 3rd, my appointment was late afternoon on the 2nd and I can't imagine that they would be able to get the letter done and submitted the same day. And now I wait. UGH! It's the worst. I don't have any idea how long it should take. I've read the boards and for some people, it's taken as little as a single day for approval. and some waited for weeks only to be denied. It's maddening!! Thanks for the vent! TX2NC

    embarrassed to ask but ......

DH = Dear Husband I am not sure with the sleeve, but I had sex with my husband about 10 days post-op my band surgery. John, my husband, was deployed during my revision to the sleeve June 3rd, and he didn't get home until September 30th. From what I've heard from others, they were able to be intimate once they were pain free, and comfortable. Of course, you can't be a contortionist immediately post op, but take it easy and be gentle.

    please help

I'm not so sure it's a bad thing .... dumping. That is exactly why many people opt for bypass, they are hoping they will be one of those that do dump. I have a friend that eats her 800 calories a day in good food and 5# of candy. Yes, daily. She has the worst true sugar addiction of anyone I have ever met. (She's banded) If she had bypass and dumped that would be a wonderful thing. The reason she isn't getting bypass is because it's not a given she will dump. When they first realized bypass could lead to dumping it was a concern. Today they don't look at it as a bad thing, they look at it as a benefit and if you talk to most bypass folks with sugar issues they hope and cross their fingers that they will dump. The issue with the person that claims one will dump with bypass isn't that it was a "potential" complication, it was that she flat out demands and insists bypass folks will have this issue and that simply isn't accurate information. And whether dumping is a complication or a benefit is ... opinion. Personally, I think it's a benefit. The reason I was banded was not because I really wanted a band, the real reason is that I did not want bypass. There were no United States long term studies on the band or the sleeve. I couldn't even find any long term studies on the sleeve anywhere in the world at the time I was banded. We had no idea what the long term results (regarding weight loss) would be. So, I got a band. That was one of the biggest mistakes in my case. I've since revised to a sleeve and it's a much MUCH easier journey. Personally, I'd never get another band. I honestly do not believe it is going to last more than 10 years at best in most people. Newbies want reversible. Once they get to goal they want permanent and forever. ;o)

    Goal weight?

The closer you get to a weight that you think might be a goal one, keep in mind how far you have come. You want to be at a weight that you can easily maintain and love the way you look at this weight. Don't get all wrapped around BMI and the like. If you get to 175 and love yourself there and can maintain it then go with it. We are not like regular people who just need to lose 20 pounds. 100+ pounds will be a major accomplishment. Now all that being said my original goal was 180 pounds but when I got their I revised to 170 which according to BMI is in the normal range for my height. I wish you the best, you will do it!!
  8. Melissa, I live in Australia. Bit far away to travel for a revision for you
  9. I had my band for 5yrs, sick & miserable for 5yrs lol. Slips, dilations, you name it. I was revised dec 10th 2012, they removed my band and sleeved me all at once. My band made it easy to remove, since all the sutures had broken and the damn thing decided to wrap around my esophagus. I had esophageal spasms for 2 weeks because of it but I'm doing good now & feel so much better
  10. Thanks everyone for your support and help. I am just starting to figure out what to do. I have had my band almost 10 years and it is time to come out. I am scared of what damage they will find when they get there and I am trying to select a new Doctor. I looked locally at what my insurance company recommends as Centers of Excellence and I also see that there are some top hospitals outside of my region, such as The Cleveland Clinic. I am wondering if it will be worth it for peace of mind, to see if I can go to one of these more experienced hospitals for a revision? It would be a 1 hour plane ride and around $200 from Chicago or a $150 train ride for 5 hours each way. I would not want to drive it, that would be about 6 hours. Am I being unreasonable or am I just reading too deeply into horror stories and assuming that I will have problems? Any recommendations for an excellent surgeon in the Chicago area...when I say excellent, I mean world renowned. I care less about personality than I do skills.

    Sleeve vs. Band

I chose the sleeve because I did not like all of the complications that came with the band and read about all of the revisions, and figured, with my medical luck (or lack there of) I would be one of those that would HAVE to have a revision lol so why not go there first.
  12. You'll get your band removed and heal for atleast 3 months... Then get sleeved. This made me feel a lot better about a revision! I currently am in the same boat as you... Finding the perfect doctor and trying to let go of the "size of the bougie" fear though.
  13. You are correct. I had to have my band removed due to complications and was thinking of a sleeve revision. During my reading, I discovered that many bypass and sleeve patients are going back to get bands to control the hunger...which comes back after their 'honeymoon' period. When I spoke to my surgeon about this, he said that the band is considered a tool for getting rid of hunger. The sleeve is considered a tool for restriction only. .
  14. I continue to read about bogies.. I'm a revision and my surgeon doesn't use them he uses the scope as measuring gauge I thought that was interesting

    Drinking My Last Coke

Just a thought to share about saying goodbye to the drinks and foods we have come to love...those preferences or in some cases addictions are the reasons we have the band surgery. food is not your friend...saying goodbye with a finality is a positive step to take for success with your weight loss journey. As is often quoted on this forum, the band is only a tool; you must do the work to experience success with using the band in the way it has been designed to work. We need to change our relationship with food, and revise thoughts to approach a better and healthier way of life and diet. A healthier regard for food as something we need to fuel our bodies to live, instead of looking at food as solace for anxious and/or angry thoughts. Best wishes for success as you move forward on your journey!

Well I had my surgery with Dr. Alejandro Lopez....Dr. Ortiz assisted but I think it's a different Ortiz. My coordinators are through Alighterme. I'm happy with my results. Now it's up to me to use this tool in the right way. It's definitely not a quick fix but this is a proces....a continuous process. I think I worry mor about food now than before. But no complains. Btw, when I had my revision surgery in NJ I was treated like crap.at MI Doctor in MX I was treated well and it was very clean

Be suspicious all you want Sheree. This is one opinion and one opinion only based on MY EXPERIENCE and my THREE FRIENDS EXPERIENCE. If you dont like it, too bad. The reason these forums are in place to begin with is to share EXPERIENCES. Not to be the Cheerleader for only a select doctor, which it sounds like you are. The other comment I want to make is I have dealt with the OCC & Coordinators since 2008. I have ALOT of experience with their shenanigans. When I had thought that "maybe" I would go back to OCC for a revision, I was treated so incredibly poorly by Lori via email that I basically told her to go screw herself. Yes. I saved the email and just got done rereading it. I might as well swallow bile it makes me so mad and disgusted. As I stated, there are alot of wonderful Drs who perform this surgery. Dr Ortiz is a drop in the bucket and is definitely NOT my first choice (or any choice for that matter).
  18. I’m having a revision from sleeve to bypass on July 5th. I had a hard time with protein shakes when I had the sleeve, they tasted so chalky. Can anyone recommend protein shakes from Bariatric Pal that are good and not chalky tasting?
  19. I never had a band slip or erosion but had a combination of reflux and food intolerances that were very disruptive to life. One advice I would give is make sure whoever does your revision has done many procedures and find a population of revision patients (virtual or real life) for feedback and support. Lots of folks say that we revisions still lose well but not as much as virgin sleevers. When I compare weight lost to others sleeved around the same time though, I'm pretty close to average. Just short of 45 lbs. in 3 months. I don't have a soft stop like I did with the band. Mine was a sniffle. But I can tell what almost full feels like pretty easily now. The first few weeks of solid foods I had to measure because I couldn't feel it. Eating too much is uncomfortable but I wouldn't call it painful. Way too much I'm guessing would hurt but I haven't tried. I can eat nearly anything at this point. No more obsession with texture or days where not even tea or Water went down. I haven't tried milk, sugary or fatty foods yet except a bite/taste. There's no "catch point" like I had with the band. This means when you take too big a bite or first start taking pills again you might find out what too big means. For me it was sliming and foaming a bit. That part was the same as the band and is basically gone for me. I was afraid to drink for several weeks after surgery because of all of the band issues. For me it turned out to be all in my head and not reality at all. I don't really feel much hunger at all, not like the band where my stomach was growling and I couldn't do anything about it. But I do find it harder to stay on top of eating and fluids more than with the band. But I also had the band for six years so I just might not be remembering. Also I think the postop diet was easier to bear the second time around. I think because I knew it was temporary. Feel free to PM me if I missed a question.

Does excercise help with excess skin?

One of the key factors those people are missing is time. As I said in a previous post, it can take time for the skin to catch up to the weight loss. That's not to say that all of their skin would have shrunk had they given it more time, but it may have improved somewhat. I don't want to sound like a hypocrite here though. Full disclosure: I lost 90 pounds back in 2010/2011 "on my own" and had an extended tummy tuck and breast lift afterward. And that was after having maintained my weight for almost a year. So clearly my skin didn't tighten back up to the point where I was happy with it. I do wish that I knew back then what I know now about steps I could have taken to reduce the loose skin issue WHILE losing weight. Once I am sleeved on September 1, I intend to be religious about hydration, moisturization, supplementation, and resistance training. Hopefully by doing that, I can reduce the likelihood of needing to have any revision to my tummy tuck or any additional skin removal surgery down the road.

    Fitbit

Hello all. I'm about a year and a half out from my lap band to gastric bypass revision and I'm just not losing weight anymore. I've never made goal and I accept my part in that. This last month I've really gotten back on track and begun to focus on doing things right. Just wondering if anyone out there is using a Fitbit and if you find it helpful. Any tips or tricks??

    How restricted is your sleeve?

Thats good to hear. Because the way i feel, i want as much restraint as possible. How far out are you? Sent From Galaxy Note 5 using the BariatricPal App I'm only a month and 10 days out. I revised from the band to the sleeve on June 7th.
  24. well my 5 month surgiversary was on the 15th! I'm a few days late, but better late than never in my book. I'm so happy that i decided to do the revision and get rid of my CRAP BAND!!! that thing was the worst, especially after it slipped. So, since 10/15 i am down 50 pounds! my blood work is great except for Vitamin D which i am working on now! I am now down 77% of my excess body weight since surgery, the lowest that i have been since college! I have so much energy, that my kids are finding it hard to keep up with me! I can eat pretty much anything that i want, which is a double edged sword! I sometimes 'want' what i shouldn't eat, but a few bites and i'm good! before it would be all or nothing! My husband and son think i'm HOT, that is so cool! I am looking forward getting the last 19 pounds off and getting to goal! that is when I am going to buy a new wardrobe! Until then, my baggy size 10 jeans will just have to do! thanks for reading and being a great support group!!! Patti

Band to sleeve one surgery or two?

I was banded in 2013 and it slipped. Most like due to the fact that I continued bad habits like bread, rice and other junk. I had the band removed and revised to a sleeve on jan 23rd. I feel great. 1st week was the worst. Pain from where the port was. My surgeon was excellent. He said there was a lot of scar tissue but he was able to it. Weight loss is slower due to this being my second surgery but loss is a loss and I will take it. Not screwing up this time. Good luck!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
