Revision Supervised Weight Loss Question
Juniper123 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Brief background, got lapband about 11 years ago (starting BMI was 43). I did well and kept off 55 pounds (BMI 33)... until I started aspirating at night. I had a barium swallow which showed a distended esophagus and a endoscopy which showed reflux. Doc said band needs to come out. I had band unfilled, and as I expected, I've gained weight. I've gained about 30 lbs in the last 5 months (current BMI 38). I want to revise to a gastric bypass. I am well aware that I need surgical help to keep at a healthy weight. Prior to banding, and since being unfilled, I'm constantly hungry and never feel full. I finally felt "normal" with the lapband. When I'm not constantly hungry, I can maintain a healthy weight. But, even with the extra 30 lbs, my BMI is still not over 40, which as I understand it, would make insurance coverage easy. (I have Maryland CareFirst BCBS) My doctor has me doing all the things needed for insurance approval for the revision, including being on a supervised diet. But I'm gaining weight. This does not surprise me -- there was a reason I needed surgical weight loss in the first place -- but I'm getting mixed messages from my doctor and from my diet supervisor (who works for his office). Diet supervisor tells me that I'm less likely to get insurance approval due to my weight gain since being unfilled and being on the supervised diet. Doctor has made vague statements saying that the reflux found on the endoscopy may be enough to make it go through insurance successfully. Diet supervisor wants me to lose a significant amount of weight in the coming month, to try to offset my gains, by going on the pre-surgical diet early. Very honestly, I'm hesitant. If I do end up having to get up to a 40 BMI to have the surgery (12 more pounds...), I don't want to yoyo any more than I have to. And if the reflux finding will get me approved, I don't want to starve myself without the benefit of surgical help. Anybody been in any kind of similar situation? I can use any advice or commiseration available. -
lapband removed hoping to have bypass
cindyn replied to cindyn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My insurance will not cover revisions. I don't consider this a revision, I have been 7 months since my band was removed. I have had my PCP refer me..now we shall see. Hopeful at best -
Eating terrible closer to surgery
hollywrites2u replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, as others have said, you're not broken. I'm not even approved for surgery and I've noticed that I've been eating more with that idea of, "I better enjoy it now". I'm hoping to get a revision but my insurance is unlikely to even agree to pay for WLS & I'm eating for two. :-o Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision from RNY to Distal RNY questions
Nifer72 replied to Nifer72's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! Sorry I haven't been around much. Did you have a Distal revision or a revision to a duodenal switch (they are different). Anyway, I'm doing ok. I'm calling it the surgery that wasn't. So I did have surgery on March 21st. Dr went in and had to clean a bunch of adhesions and fix a hernia before he saw that things didn't look the way they should. It wasn't the normal, expected RNY anatomy. He couldn't complete the surgery without coming up with a new surgical plan. As it was a 1 hr surgery had already turned into 3 from the adhesions and hernia repair. As of right now, I go back to see my surgeon tomorrow to see what our/my options are and figure out the best surgical plan for me. How did your surgery go? -

I've read on the forum many revise to a bypass if they have hiatal hernia and acid reflux. This wouldn't be an option for me, I had colon cancer and need to have yearly colonoscopy. Makes me feel its higher stakes with the sleeve as I won't be able to revise. -

Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction after Surgery
Katja posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi! Has anyone been diagnosed with Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction due to losing the large amount we lose after surgery? I have it and could not believe losing this weight would cause something like this! The ENT I see is terrific, but I could NOT believe he said I could gain some weight to lessen the symptoms! I'm not even at 25 BMI yet after my revision to Bypass last year! Anyone? What have you experience with this and what did you do to lessen the symptoms? Has anyone had it disappear after the weight was stabilized after a while? Thanks for answering! -
Candy Cane Revision
Karen Dean replied to Sallyfromdasuburbs's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have just had candy cane revision. When did you have the original surgery? Have you had a gastroscopy? They can't just guess this! Mine was in 2000, and I had alot of vomiting post op for years. I have had some regain in the last five years and what I thought was reflux. Turns out after a gastroscopy they found candy cane which explained the years of vomiting! Anyhoooo, decided to have the RNY revision and when he got in there found I had a fisutla around 10mm which was allowing food into the remnant stomach and some of the limb lengths were incorrect. I ended up having to have it fully open as there was alot of scar tissue and when he got in there found that large parts of my intestines were twisted! So not the keyhole surgery I had expected, and a longer recovery but all is good now. I had the operation o the 10th February 2022, and I am almost 10 weeks post op I have lost 35lbs which I am very happy with. I dont have as much to loose as the first operation, but it feels just like it did all those years ago, and the hunger is gone. -
lapband removed hoping to have bypass
RhanBandToBYPASS replied to cindyn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just finished my 3rd week after revision from LapBand to Gastric Bypass! I had mine done at the same time, tho. Like previous reply, this has seriously been the best decision. The band was torture, frequent vomiting even with NO fill, my band had slipped and the frequent vomiting maybe led to a hiatal hernia. And I regained every last pound of the 60# I lost with it. The bypass has been great, I started soft foods last week and so far so good. I've lost 25.4#!! All the best to you! -
Hi, all new here. I was sent by my PCP to have a revision to my RNY. The surgeon suggests Candy Cane Revision and I asked will that help me lose weight? This jackass tells me some but stop eating so much! My 14 yr old said she wants what she is supposed to and no junk foods. He looked me dead in my face and said I doubt that. I am 268 lbs and 5'2. My Doctor along with the original Surgeon who retired and sent me to him are really PO'd about this. Should I ask for a second opinion or seek help elsewhere. I have no gastric issues this is what they are seeing due to tests. Thank You

Thanks for the good vibes! My surgery was the 5th. I also managed well with a cpl Tylenol. Amazing! I am on the last hours of my 2 Wk post op liquids diet. My lap sites are healing well, my procedure was a revision of a RNY. I am holding out to get on the scale until I get ready to see my doc on Tue. My favorite knock around jeans are really loose, the will be listed on Posh to sale pretty soon. I went for a great walk today at a nearby park with a jogging trail. I will make that a daily activity! So much better than my backyard laps. Be Well! Tina -

Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.
shriner37 replied to Donna zariya's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think it really is more a question of whether your stomach is healed enough to tolerate alcohol. My surgeon advised to wait two months before consuming alcohol as their belief is that the stomach should be completely healed first. That being said, I did start drinking again a few months after my sleeve, which I believe was one of the reasons I never reached my weight loss goal. I was in a similar situation to yours in that alcohol was a part of my social scene at the time. Along with drinking came poor nutrition decisions and between the two I stopped losing weight 30 pounds short of my goal. I'm two months post revision to bypass and haven't started consuming alcohol again yet. I'm determined to get to my weight loss goal this time (only have about 25 lbs to go) and have now adapted my social scene enough so that alcohol isn't such a big part of it. -
lapband removed hoping to have bypass
Tomo replied to cindyn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I went from the lapband to VSG to RNY. Revisions were mandatory due to serious side effects from the previous WLS. I wish I went straight to RNY but hindsight is 20/20, I guess. I was in the minority that got severe gerd from the VSG. I had my revision to RNY at 60+ years old, and it has been a great experience, both in feeling better physically and weight loss. -
Revision after only a year of Gastric Sleeve
Tomo replied to nidvia's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Mine took a few years to develop after the sleeve. Even then, I kept switching different PPIs, H2 blockers for a few years after that. I recently had the revision to RNY this past August. I'm sorry that I waited so long to have the revision. The revision helped me a lot. Better sleep due to no severe gerd keeping me up, physically it feels the same as the sleeve but no gerd, and I have far better weight control. I'm sorry you are having to go through this. Most don't get this side effect of the sleeve but unfortunately we both did. -
Revision after only a year of Gastric Sleeve
nidvia posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I had my gastric sleeve in March 22,21. My recovery was great and I didn’t had any pain or complications at all. I have lost like 60lbs so far. The problem is I have severe GERD. Since the day of my surgery I been taking PPI, now twice a day . Few days ago I had my one year visit with my surgeon and I he suggested that I should do a revision because taking the PPI long term is not ideal and he said that small percent of patients with gastric sleeve end up with severe GERD and I was one of them. That the only cure is the revision. I think is too soon but the regurgitation in the middle of the night are a nightmare to the point that I have to sleep sitting down. Have anyone one in here had a revision so soon? Sorry for my English is not my first language. -
Tips & tricks for the pre-op ALL LIQUID DIET!
Tina 2.0 replied to Vivis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi V! Glad you were seen by your GI doc. Perhaps some coconut water or milk for a gentle replenish of electrolytes. Some Pro biotic, Yakult or a supplement. There really is more to gain from compliance than there is that we lose in the temporary limitations. Yes I re gained 100% of my wt loss from a RNY 23 yr ago.. I followed everything the first year or two, then over time started snacking, having one more bite, a cpl cocktails, sparkling water and so on. I normalized the incremental weight gain and then it just all got to overwhelming to get off. I was eating everything just like everyone around me was eating. I went through several hoops over the last few years to get my revision. I wanted a surgeon with experience because my first RNY was open so I have a ton of scar tissue. I put aside cocktails years ago. Just a bad habit and empty calories. But changing my comfort foods, grazing, and sugar has been a struggle. The last 6mo have been a Re commitment to myself. The last 3 I have been completely off the grazing behavior, no more carbonated water, sugar very limited. Now I just need to push through to Tue to my Post Op where my diet will be advanced. Be Well! Tina -
If you have gas pains walk walk walk! Sounds crazy but it’s so important! I came home on 4-6 after my RNY revision. 3 doses of Tylenol has been all I needed. No narcotics. I had a few days worth but never needed anything. I hope you find relief with the diverticulitis flare ups. I would imagine with more mindful food choices and good hydration they will be few and far between. Less inflammation and less husks and nuts. Be Well! Tina

Tips & tricks for the pre-op ALL LIQUID DIET!
Tina 2.0 replied to Vivis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Vivas, Stay the course sis! All of our doctors have different protocols. I am doing a 2 Wk clear post op. I see others on purée by now. I will tell you my surgery was a revision. I wish I could turn back the clock and follow my doctors instructions to the T. Over the last 23 yr I managed to regain all my wt loss. My current dietitian asked if I was driving an expensive luxury car if I would use the cheapest gas to fuel it. Wow! I would not put sugar in that tank!! Yes there are cost associated with the pre and post. I am trying to cut costs as I go ie the Gatorade packets vs the bottles. We have to recognize our worth to make the changes we need to become and remain healthy. Every sacrifice will be worth it. The rewards around the corner are amazing! Enjoy the journey it is as important as the destination. Tina 2.0 -
lapband removed hoping to have bypass
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to cindyn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yeah Band to Bypass revision soon for me. I mean I don't know your medical history, but your age alone is no reason not to consider revision. I've seen older folks here on this forum than you getting wls for the first time and even revision. If you're starting to regain, definitely pursue revision. -
Thanks for the information I'm going to give myself until September to lose as much as I can and if not at the desired weight I want I will consider the revision. Happy Easter and best of luck to you in your weight loss journey.

I’m day 1 after surgery revision to gastric bypass. I was much less sore this time & been walking and siping my H20 & broth soup no problem. My surgeon already came by & they are discharging me! yay! Walking is key- gets everything moving, burps, gas, air, etc. I’ll start taking a stool softener later today just as a precaution. Good luck to you. Hope you feel better -
Yea what i am saying is if you do the revision, They can repair it then. But loosing weight is eating right and exercising. Find something that you like. I started going for a walk for about an hour a day at night (Its too hot here in Florida for the day lol) if you have a gym in your area they probably have classes for water aerobics and other ones. my mom goes to those types of classes a couple times a week.

I am 3 years post op from gastric sleeve and I want to do a revision, however the provider wanted me to have a esophageal x-ray before making the final decision, during this x-ray it was determined that I have a Hiatal Hernia. Has anyone else that has had the sleeve ever gone through this before and if so what did you do? I want or need to lose 60 pounds so that I don't have to do the revision any ideas on where I can start, I love water aerobics, walking and weights.
