*** September 2018 Sleevers ***
TX4everLinds replied to macadamia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m having the sleeve. My preop is clear liquids only and I can add clear liquid protein on day 5. I’ve been seeing dietician though since February 27 and been eating basically Keto/low-carb and have lost 52lbs so far. -
5 Weeks post-op, what can I do to stave off hair loss?
MargoCL replied to Russ D's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My Dr., PA, NUT and nearly every other medical professional has recommended biotin and an increase in protein. I started biotin early this year with my Keto diet and my hair has never been more healthy. It is going to remain my go to until someone medically tells me not to. -
Update: I emailed a few articles about this to my sister (who is a MD) and she said it sounded bogus and backed it up with some good explanation/examples... I definitely have the rash too, but it seems like maybe there's a reason besides keto type diet behind it...
-
I googled Keto rash and it looks like what I have & it seems like it tends to show up where mine has shown up. I do hydrocortisone cream and even went to the doctor to have it looked like. Basically they said to keep doing hydrocortisone and follow up with them later...
-
I've been low carb for a very very long time. I only eat adequate protein though, not high protein. I've never heard of keto rash--doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I'd think it was a food sensitivity or allergy of some sort. Have you changed soaps or dry cleaners or anything lately? How are the fall pollens in your area?
-
With us eating low carbs and high protein and probably falling into ketosis, has anyone experienced a keto rash? I had a rash on my arm a week ago and today have one on my neck. I heard someone on YouTube mention "keto rash" and had never heard of it. Just wondering if my rash is temporarily something else or if in fact it could be "keto rash".

I am in public safety where keto is running rampant. There have been quite a few diet preachers that I have dealt with, even my best friend that was pretty unsupportive and was upset because intermittent fasting was working for him. He doesn't realize that we have different genetics. Most of his family is tall and skinny wile mine is short and overweight. I had tried most diets with short term success but he as well as those around me didn't understand that either. It was EXTREMELY aggravating and in the end I made my decision, didn't tell hardly anyone and know that I made the right choice for me. Everyone says that I look amazing and I feel amazing, you just have to know that you made the best choice for you and that it is your life not theirs!

Diet preachers are so irritating. I have someone in my life right now that won't stop pushing high-fat keto (85% or more) on me. I've tried it, and it is not for me. Many people find themselves not hungry on that plan....I am ravenous, and I honestly find it kind of gross. Others are pushing plant based all the time. A great option if it works for you, but I not only enjoy dairy and meat but I lose better and feel better when I eat it. There is no one right way for anyone. The only diet that works is one you can stick with, something that is realistic for you and helps you mentally and physically feel good. I've always done best on moderate carb, moderate fat, high protein, lots of veggies...and portion control. That's why I am choosing this surgery, because it will help me restrict my portions and push me toward protein and veggies while not completely eliminating carbs. That doesn't work for everyone, and I wouldn't push it on anyone. I wouldn't suggest any eating plan unless someone brought it up and asked. You can politely decline a food without getting into a whole speech about how gluten blows you up or how cows milk should only be ingested by baby cows. Just say "No, thank you." You can add a simple, "I refrain from X" if you must. If someone asks, and you are comfortable, by all means, give advice. You might help them. If they haven't asked though, no need to get into the details. Anyone dealing with any diet preachers?

If you go full Keto by the book, you should lose 10 lbs by September 20.

Good luck on your continuing journey. Di Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

Not loose Weight pre op
Swanton_Bomb replied to lili@ne's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, well a month is not long, but depending on how overweight you are, you should be able to do it unless you are very metabolically resistant. Log every single bite. Measure everything. The pre op meal plan they gave me was 1500-1700 calories, which is far too high for me to lose any significant weight at my height, so you might have to play with the calories. Some people swear by keto for quick weight loss and getting that initial water off. Good luck! -
Thiamine (B1) deficiency in sleeve gastrectomy despite fewer malabsorption issues than gastric bypass
RickM replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I suspect that at least of part of this is from the popularity of low carb dieting, as grains are one of the major sources of B1, and even for those who aren't big into Atkins, keto, etc., grain products tend to be but on the back burner for quite a while in favor of protein (a necessity) and green vegetables. -
Intermittent Fasting
FluffyChix replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So I found a plan: Dr. Johnson's Alternate Day Diet (based on a lot of the research from Walter Longo, Krista Varady, et al and it was one of the original alternate day fasting diets with caloric restriction that came to the public. He's a doc out of LSU. And they found it helped their asthma patients, and helped with wl too. So I added it to my low carb principle. I'd lost from 325 to 160lb doing Atkins '72. But I'd been stuck for years at 260lbs. Nothing I did could budge it. I'd go up or down within a few pounds. My bloodwork was amazing, but I was stuck. I added it into the mix and started losing. (I had a hysterectomy and so was very hormone deficient and imbalanced hormonally.) I'd lost 30lbs when they discovered my breast cancer. Well I immediately said, "Fu*k It All!" And I went on my "Make-a-wish Diet" where I ate ALL. THE. CRAP. and I waited for all of my test results and to get into an amazing oncologist. It took a little over 2mons. In that time, I had a 25lb regain eating my MAW diet. And the oncologist was horrified. Cuz that can make cancer grow quickly (gaining after dx). So he said to get back on it. And I fasted all through chemo and radiation. I essentially went from 260lbs down through chemo, 1st surgery, radiation and lost to 218lbs. Incidentally, the chemo + fasting did something my onc had never witnessed. I had a high grade aggressive tumor that is historically a "lazy eater" of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. Meaning chemo will shrink the tumors a little bit, and stop/alter the cells...but you don't usually see complete remission or regression. They saw that my tumors shrank 60% with neoadjuvant chemo. And the path report showed that although there were some remaining living cells within my 12 lymph nodes (1 had pierced the node)--all the cancer cells showed genetic modification by the chemo which is unusual. So the research shows this to be true...fasting during chemo can be protective of healthy cells and helps boost the effectiveness of chemo and radiation. When I got down to 218lbs they worried about my radiation levels and I was getting huge burns/open wounds. So they told me to stop losing. I went back to a "more normal" Zone style diet 30-30-40. And maintained for a few months. Then after all my reconstructions and healings slowly began to regain up to my most recent 287lbs. The onc was freaking out and tried for 2 years to talk me into WLS. I resisted and pretended I didn't notice the weight gain, even though by that time, I was essentially bed-ridden. (I'm still on a cancer drug and will be on it for 10 years total. It puts me in "super-menopause" and shuts down my hormones as much as possible. So I'm extremely hormone deficient/imbalanced.) I haven't been doing alternate day fasting anymore. But yeah, you might be able to say I've been doing IF, cuz you know, at 650-850, I'm already in de facto keto from calorie reduction--a form of fasting, and I'm living in a full-time calorie restricted state. So I find no reason to add even more alternate day IF into the mix at this point, until I'm at a more normal maintenance level caloric load. Although, I do naturally fast for 12-14 hours (with breaking the fast with 3oz of Premier Protein in my coffee each day). So you could theoretically claim using your definition, that I've been IF since May 2017 when I weighed 287lbs. LOL. I get up, have protein in my coffee as creamer. Then I eat breakfast between 10-11am. I stop eating around 8-9pm. Today I weigh 164.6lbs. Sorry for the book!! -
Intermittent Fasting
GreenTealael replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
They are in my fluids (tea or coffee) traditional keto styled fasting some people can have MCT oil in coffee and it won't break the fast for them, since I add so much water oz in the morning it does not appear to break it for me, but I limit the tea/coffee with protein to one serving then all the water happens, the other servings of tea/coffee with protein happens during my non fasting hours. -

This may be an unpopular answer, but why focus on keto or IF? Your problem doesn’t seem to be losing weight. You lost 70 lbs after WLS, and I miss sure in many other diets I never your life. Why not find a sustainable diet you can live with long term? -

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
Ylime replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been dreaming of avocados. I can't wait to be able to make guac. Here is the idea I had. You know that recipe going around Keto groups where you make pizza crust out of ground chicken? I was going to make that and cut it up into pieces and use that as chips in the guac! -
My nutritionists wanted me to do several things: 1) Focus on getting a protein as part of every meal. Ideally a lean protein, but they never balked at peanut butter on an apple as a snack. Low-sugar yogurts are good. Light string cheese is good. Eggs are good. 2) Get a fruit (up to 1/2 cup or 1 fruit) or a vegetable with each meal. 3) Switch from simple to complex carbohydrates. If you're going to have bread, make it whole grain--and after your protein. They weren't like "take away potatoes" (though they did encourage me not to count those as a vegetable :)), but they were like "switch from white rice to brown rice." 4) Take small bites, chew a lot, eat mindfully, put the fork/spoon down between every bite. No wolfing down food in the car, no open bags of chips in front of the TV. 5) Get 8 cups or more of water per day. If it has Mio in it, or it's an herbal tea or a decaf coffee, that's totally fine. Sugary beverages are a big no, and caffeinated beverages don't count. 6) Stop having carbonated drinks. (This is the one that I balked at the most, honestly. I knew I'd need to give them up post-op, but I had really planned to keep enjoying them until I had to stop.) If you really must have that diet soda, let it go flat first. And I mostly followed that -- I won't lie: at least two croissants, no small amount of Chicago style popcorn, and several servings of pizza crossed my lips over the course of the two months I mostly-followed these guidelines -- and lost 6 pounds each month. I need to lose a bit more quickly, so I've changed things around a bit -- doing a low-fat ketogenic diet which has me down near 1000 calories a day -- in order to meet my doctor's arbitrary weight goal in time to get my surgery this fall. But the rules above were pretty good, and the flexibility to break them--just a little, and only very rarely--was nice. (I hate keto. I hate that a single piece of fruit will wreck up my system for over a day. But it is a very efficient way to lose weight with mostly manageable hunger. And those refried beans in the mushy food stage will taste SO GOOD to me. I miss beans.)

Waking up from Surgery. Any Tips?
CrankyMagpie replied to ellie123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Probably not until late November. I can't pin my surgeon down, to get a date. They keep moving the goalposts. ("Lose 15 pounds by September, and we'll schedule you." "Ah, you lost 6 pounds between June and July; lose 6 more by August, and we'll get you in for late September/early October." "Oh, no, actually, Dr. Eid wants you to lose 20 more pounds, so if you lose 8 between now and your September appointment, we'll put you on the schedule for, let's say, the week of Thanksgiving." Ugh. Anyway, I'm at 7 out of those "8 more pounds," a couple of weeks after that appointment*, and well on my way to the "20 more total," so I'm going to do my best to get them to put me on the schedule, for real this time, so I can know when my surgery date is.) *I am cheating by doing a low-fat keto diet. ~5 of those pounds were definitely water weight from switching into ketosis, so as soon as I eat some fruit or something, they'll come back. Cheating or not, I'll meet their goals so that I can get in and get the surgery this semester. (I work at a college and take classes. My whole life is in semesters.) -
One year out! 157 pounds lost. I (generally) consume about 1400 calories. It does vary, but I wouldn’t have gone under 1100 in several months. I am pretty tall - 5 foot 9, but I do very little exercise. Like a bit of yoga and barre. I’m in my thirties. This is something that you have to play around with. During a stall, I freak out and drop to 1200. Then I might go up again. Ive has an excellent month (down about 10 pounds, which is great for me at this stage of the journey). Even so, I do think about dropping my calories down to speed things up but there’s no guarantee it would work. I also eat fruit as a snack and I would have to stop doing that. Also, I want to be able to maintain my weight. I can’t live forever eating only 500 calories a day. Its not just about calories though in my experience (I’ll brace for some people to respond with the usual calories in vs calories out arguement). It really is about what you eat. I avoid bread, pasta, too much processed food, high sugar food, milk chocolate. I do eat dark chocolate every single day. So although it’s a high calorie diet, I generally follow a pretty moderate Mediterranean diet. I have messed around with the Keto diet, but I like eating fruit. My body feels healthier. The bottom line is that you have to talk to your nutritionist and come up with something you can comply with.

PreOp diet weightloss?
CrankyMagpie replied to AngelaM258's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc requires that we lose 10% of our initial weight before surgery. I'm 60% of the way to that goal, with a probable surgery date in November. (I'm also doing keto, but also trying to keep it low-fat, which makes it pretty seriously low-calorie as well. It's awful, but at least it's fast! I'll meet my surgeon's goal before the liquid diet and, assuming that's also very-low-carb, I'll probably lose another little bit from that, too.)
