2Nd Surgery And Still No Sleeve!

Be thankful though, in that if your surgeon was not confident in his ability to make it work and had tried anyway, disaster would have followed. Perhaps your new surgeon will have more experience with revisions. Good luck!
  2. Oh my goodness, what a journey! I'm so sorry you had to go through all this! Was your GP revision in MX or here in the states? The positive of all this is that you are done with the tough part and from here on out, every day will get easier!

    Hello please...Not feeling well

Wow sure sounds like you went through a lot! I am glad you are on your road to recovery! How was the repair surgery? Did it take a long time? I am in the lap band to RNY revision process, definitely terrified of complications but I am trying not to let it stop me from going something that will give me hope to lose the extra weight I have been carrying all my life.

    Sleeve Plication ?

Apparently this is the method that Dr. Oritz prefers for sleeve revision to tighten a loose sleeve. Yes I'm having a hard time finding much on it though I do know that the original plications (non sleevers) showed very little success long term.

    Esophageal Dilation

There is also another VERY RARE cause, that unfortutenly I experienced. Everytime they filled my band and got to a place of good restriction (about 8cc out of 10cc band) I would experience nighttime vomiting and although I was restricted I could still eat WAY more then I should have been able to and gaining fast.. Each time they took an esphogram and it showed massive dilation. After 6 months of going through the fill/unill cycle they realized there had 2 be something wrong and when they did a revision surgery turns out scar tissue had formed and pulled the band into a malposition. Essentially everytime they filled to a point it would kink off my espogus so all the food would just sit there. Cort http://thebandit1.blogspot.com/
  6. Hello today is the big day . I am getting a revision from the lap band to the sleeve , I go in at 9:30 am . I had the band put in twice the first time I contracted h pilorie or what ever it was which caused a lot of vomiting and acid . Which Inturn caused the band to bend the stomach. So they took it out but before they did I lost a 100 pounds I was 430 when I had the band drop to 330 . Then they put it in again but just maintained it . But then I started having problems , they now are saying it is bending the stomach and some of the fluid is missing .so now today I will get the sleeve I gained 20 pounds unfortunately .so I am up to 350 ..looking forward for the new lifestyle and hopefully no more constant hunger pains that never seem to get satisfied .
  7. I didn't have a revision, but when I was doing the research on my surgery I ran across a few peoples posts about how they revised to the DS and their weight loss. I remember one lady was in the 350's prior to her original surgery (gastric bypass) and got down to the 190's but then gained all her weight back and so had a revision to the DS and went from the 350's down to the 180's (she got to 170's after skin removal). I was actually considering the gastric bypass surgery at the time and I just kept thinking 'what if it fails' I didn't want to go through another surgery so I chose the Loop DS as my main surgery and it's worked great for me so far. I figure by the revision comments that I had stumbled on in my research before my surgery choice that your weight loss will probably be about the same, maybe slightly less than it would be with a fresh surgery but you'll probably still likely lose 70+% of excess weight. Just might be a tiny bit slower than a first time surgery.

Anyone have LapBand to DS revision?

I had a lapband placed in 2013 and it was removed April 2021 due to GERD. I'm in the process of revising to RNY. My surgeon won't perform DS on anyone unless they have really bad diabetes. So it was never an option for me. I never made it to goal weight with the lap band. From what I've read, most don't. So I'm hoping to cure the GERD and lose a little more weight after RNY. Best wishes on your Lap band removal and DS surgeries!

    Lapband removal denied

My insurance company has "revision" guidelines for WLS as a completely separate benefit so that may be something to look in to.
  10. I had my revision from band to sleeve almost 3 months ago. I had it done in Mexico by Dr. Aceves. It was a wonderful experience. I had the sleeve done because I was having problems getting the fill level right. I would either be too loose or too tight. After 2 1/2 years of that, I decided to go for the sleeve. I was a self pay, also. The sleeve is great!!! __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

    Gastric Sleeve or Bypass

I had a band for 2 1/2 years. It slipped 1 1/2 years and had it repositioned last January 2013. Then I was taking it slow because I heard it it slips once the band is likely slip again. Well, I found out in October 2013 it slipped again and my Dr said it is best to come out because it will continue to slip. He said I could remove the band all together, remove the band and revise it to the sleeve later or remove the band and revise to the sleeve at the same time. I chose remove the band and revise to the sleeve in one surgery. I choose the sleeve because i didnt what my everything rerouted and have problems with malabsorbtion. My Doctor does very few bands nowadays, unless someone's insurance will not cover the sleeve. He still does bypasses but not as many as before because of the sleeve. He said it's kinda known in the profession as "sleeve 'em and leave 'em". Sounds kinda mean but it means there is less upkeep with the sleeve than with the band. Just do all the research you can on both and you'll make the best decision for you.

    very confused

My surgeon confirmed I was an ideal candidate for band and sleeve and allowed me to make the ultimate decision. I spoke to the nutrition "off record" and ask which group she identified as most problematic. She stated 75% of band patients come back within 5 yrs for revision opting for sleeve. I decided on sleeve. My final step is my psy eval this Friday. I'm soooo ready!

    very confused

There is a "Band to Sleeve" revision section on this forum. I would encourage you to visit, ask the same question there, as I am sure you will receive great feedback of very experienced patients. I did consider the band at some point, but the feedback I received from patients, surgeons and other professionals in the bariatric industry was that the band proved to be very problematic, while the sleeve was gaining popularity because of its risk/result profile. Best of luck!

    surgery in a week

Hi Leena, I can only tell you what others here are telling me. And that is to hang in there. I'm freaking out too and sitting here waiting for my Dr's office to call me back with a date to have my band revision. I'm 5' 3" and weigh 213. I haven't even started the liquid diet phase yet. I'll keep you in prayer and ask the same for me. Keep in touch!

    nervous & excited

Well I have a confession.... I'm glad!! He's real, real conservative and we butted heads from time to time. So if you're real conservative, we shouldn't talk politics. LOL I've always been one of those people who doesn't tan easily (or at all) and I burn bad and then do the disgusting peel. So my heart goes out to you. At least during the peel state, if you burned that bad, you'll probably be getting some good drugs and it won't be too unpleasant. Hydration has always been the key to feeling better after a sunburn. Man, I'm thinking of you. I had my sleeve revision 6 days ago. It is rougher than I thought it would be, but it is doable and each day you see an improvement of some sort. I have been surprised at how much this site helped me during the first days. If you have a question, there's somebody who has been there and glad to share their experience. I thought I'd feel too bad to be on the computer. But it's a godsend and please know that we really are all wondering about you and wishing you well. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

    BCBS revision?

I just got approved from BC for a revision from sleeve to Rny
  18. The band is supposed to be a permanent fix. You should not think that it is temporary. The only times the band needs to be removed is if it errodes, slips, etc. I believe some of the people who had to have revision surgery was due to complications. I know for me if anything happens with my band I will have no second thoughts about getting a revision and keeping it. I love my band and I'm so glad I have it.
  19. I just got off the phone with a nurse at my doc's office and had several things clarified. I WILL be staying overnight at the hospital - I'll be admitted as an outpatient, then he will sign for me to stay. I will also have a morphine pump that will last 3 days. He will do a leak test day of surgery and again before I go home. Then I will return a week after surgery for staple removal and follow-up. I also got all the pertinent info regarding quantity of surgeries he's done (sleeves, revisions, etc.). His overall complication rate is 0.04%, which I consider pretty darn good. The info the nurse originally gave me for going home the same day was because she thought I was only having my gall bladder removed. She had no idea I was having a revision. Boy oh Boy - this confusion caused me a lot of mental anguish. But things look good now. The only thing I'm concerned about is having to dish out all my savings if there are complications from the sleeve - but with my guy's complication rate I feel like my chances for success are very good. He's the same one that did my lap band and I've not had a slippage, erosion, or flipped port, etc. so I trust him. Thanks for everyone's input. It really helps to know what your experiences have been for those of us that have yet to go through it.

    Dilemma

I have been around goal weight plus minus 5-10 lbs for some time. I got my band in 2008. Had issues with dilated pouch/esophagus. They remove my fill liquid for 4 months, I gain weight. They put it back in and it's twice as hard to get back down the 20, 30 lbs. I do it but without some liquid in my band, I'm like an alcoholic but with food. I know this. Food is my weak point, my comforter, my vice. I try not to gain weight during that phase but so far I have lost the battle. I'm at goal weight and now I hear I might have to have liquid removed yet again. I have the opportunity to change to the sleeve. One doctor says do the revision, another says I may go underweight. What would you do if the band served you so well for many many years?
  21. dvons

    Dilemma

Didn't know that, @Sai. I thought they'd just do the revision. I would probably gain half back in 6 months without any fill. SMDH. Thank you for the heads up. I hope you are doing better after the car accident. Thank you for you input. Big decision for me. Thank you, I'm leaning that way after all of your input.

    Dilemma

Wow that is a dilemma. Congrats on hitting your goal weight! Great job!!! Its good that you have not developed a false sense of security and know your Achilles tendon. You are right to be concerned and considering your options to maintain at goal... and I understand not wanting to go under goal. I say trust yourself for now give yourself a weight range to maintain on your own and if you're struggling (you'll know if you are) just know that options for revision are on the table if you should decide to go that route.
  23. So I'm thinking about giving up on my insurance fight and just switching to self-pay. I had a slipped band over a year ago. It took 6 months to get the insurance company (Fed BCBS) to finally agree to remove the band but they denied a revision to VSG stating it wasn't medically necessary because my BMI was under 35. I submitted an appeal to the Federal Office of Personnel Management in October for what was supposed to be a 60 day appeal. They "lost" my case and had to start over. Then they closed it because they didn't understand I was asking for a revision and not some sort of random partial gastrectomy. They finally sent it out for review but it sounds like they didn't select a bariatric surgeon because the answer last week came back that it isn't medically necessary because my weight isn't over a 40 BMI. The told my attorney to wait for the report and then call and talk to the nurse but I haven't heard back yet. At this point it's been almost 7 months since I submitted the appeal. This has been going on for so long I'm almost back to my original weight. If I had it to do over again I'd have done a self-pay revision with Dr. Aceves right from the start. Heck, I'd be at my goal weight by now. I just don't have it in me to keep this up. I went ahead and requested a surgery date with Dr. Aceves and put first-class airline tickets on hold on my miles. I can't think what hoops the insurance company would have next. They just don't get that the standard of care for a revision doesn't require you to regain all your weight first. I could go forward with the surgery and then sue them after the fact but I'm not sure it's worth the mental energy after all this. I had some old Microsoft stock lying around and it's almost enough for the surgery. I'm thinking that I'll never miss the money and can just get on with my life. I don't want to self-pay up here because it's really expensive and they don't cover complications like Dr. Aceves does. I could be down there next weekend having this done and just moving on. Thoughts? I could use some additional input... Thanks! Britt

    Just call me... newbie :o)

The band is awful. I'm revising to VSG for all the reasons everyone stated. I sure hope it's as amazing as it sounds. Not hungry, full after a few bites, low risk of complications.. that plus my 2 hr workouts and I'm gonna be healthy in no time! can't wait. SIGN ME UP

I don't know of any disadvantages. There is a whole list of disadvantages for the band and the gastric bypass. I revised from the band to sleeve and I am really happy that I did it before the band did damage to my stomach.
