Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Incredibleshrinkiningkiley replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yep 2-3 days preop for me. On actual keto(which yes I’ve done) it was also 2-3 days after starting -
The supervised weight loss physician that I am seeing in preparation has put me on a keto diet. I was very surprised, I was just expecting your standard low fat/low calorie diet. My dad is also following a very low carb diet and has had great results. I intend to stay low carb/keto for the rest of my life.....but I think I still need the surgery.

Looking for actual valid scientific studies that show the correlation between high saturated fat and low saturated fat in long term heart health if anyone comes across any. The information I am finding so far is that high saturated fat has a small or no impact on heart disease (or at least none found yet), and higher unsaturated fat is proven to decrease heart disease. There is so much inaccurate information out there that I am trying to stick to proven studies. Been thinking about Mediterranean Keto, but that basically takes a proven heart healthy diet and removes a large portion (carbs), so how do we know if it would still yield the health benefits?

How many calories should I eat 1.5yrs post op SADI-S
magpie26 replied to DixieD's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@DixieD oh geez! I didn't even pay attention to your type of surgery, that's one i don't know enough about. I had the sleeve, pretty basic, right? But I feel hungry all the time, someone suggested tums (maybe it was that chick up there lol!) those sort of help. I don't do shakes and I try to stay away from bars like fluffy said. I eat basic too and I'm not afraid of fat, I don't follow keto or Paleo but do my own thing. I eat a lot of yogurt, cheeses, nuts and I'll indulge and have REAL bacon with my one egg. I know you have absorption issues with your surgery but my nut said and I've seen some articles that say over 100 grams of protein is pointless because we pee it all out, the extra i mean. I don't know, I feel the being hungry thing, and I am not supposed to be hungry according to what everything said about the sleeve. I just drink water, or Crystal light or decaf tea and I have struggles with fluid off and on too. It seriously feels like it's a job to.drink water, I loved it before, now it's a chore. My doctor also upped my PPI dose too. I'm going to.educate myself on your surgery though because i.Don't know enough about it and I feel like i.should know what my WLS brothers and sisters go through -
Any cursory search of med journals reveals results synonymous to this paper. While there is long term data lacking the same can be said of the VSG itself yet its clear efficacy makes it justified, just like this diet. And reminder: this thread is about the keto diet. I haven't read all posts here but I don't usually see diet fanaticism. My issue is bashing the diet and equating it to pseudo science when there is already real science out there. While there are lazy people who give credence to fad diets of all variety, it makes no difference to the science behind the efficacy of this one when done properly.

The premise of the keto diet aligns quite well with "keeping carbs in check". I'm not much into the "high fat" aspect of keto, but I am okay with moderate healthy fats, high protein, and 0-4g of carbs a serving. Yes, it rules out a lot of the crap I used to eat, but it also depends on the purpose.. for me, it's merely to stay alive and be healthy. One needs very small quantities of carbs for energy, that's all the liver can store and make use of anyways before converting to fatty acids and distributing it. Given my extensive liver damage from garbage foods I'm almost excessively aware of the implications of reversing this course.

I read no trashing.. He's just stating a simple truth about research. Nutritional research keeps advancing so nothing is hard and fast. Research that would have nailed the keto diet (7 countries study) was thrown out years later by further research. Just like that, we had to stop blaming eggs for heart attacks after blaming them for years. Basically, if it works for you, keep doing it. But don't use yourself as metabolic standard for everyone else. It doesn't work in some others. Sent from my SM-N900P using BariatricPal mobile app

Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
NYCGirl9269 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you so much to all of you for your replies. My consult is next week. I hope Dr. approves me for bypass as that is my primary preference but I know many Dr's push for sleeve nowadays. How about eating high fat low carb? Since high cat curbs your hunger and keeps u feeling fuller longer, can any of you eat traditional keto now years later? Or you still have to keep the fats low? Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
Arabesque replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I didn’t start at as high a bmi as you but I still thought I’d share my experience so far. I chose sleeve with my surgeon’s support, even though I suffered from stress related gerd. Yes, I have some issues but manage it with medication. I chose sleeve surgery because it doesn’t change the digestive tract as much as other surgeries. Yes my stomach is smaller but it is the same length as it was as are my intestines. I think this is why absorption is not as great an issue with sleeve. My nutrient absorption is good. I haven’t taken multi vitamins since I reached my goal a year ago & my blood work come back fine. Yes, bypass patients do tend to lose weight more quickly to begin but the 5 year average of weight lost & maintained across both surgeries is about the same - 60-65% of the weight initially to be lost. Dr Vuong has a great video that explains this very well. Think it’s called how to maximise your weight loss. The amount of weight you successfully lose & maintain really comes down to the individual. Even though I’ve exceeded my original goal (lost about 135%), I’ve had the view that I would find a place of balance between maintaining my weight & maintaining my lifestyle. I believe that if you restrict your food choices & intake to a point you can not enjoy your life & the things you like to do your diet will fail because you will consciously or subconsciously revolt against the restrictions you employed. Honestly, my diet is still pretty restrictive but I’m not quite 2 years out so I have a long way to go to find the balance of what works for me. Currently, I eat low sugar & artificial sweeteners, low fat, moderate carbs (whole or multi grains but no breads, rice, pasta), fruits, vegetables & of course I’m protein & portion control focussed. I have the odd glass of alcohol but I often don’t finish the glass. It’s easy to manage & doesn’t affect how I socialise so far. The keto debate is an interesting one. My 3 week pre surgery diet was keto but I know I could not maintain the high fat requirement long term but that is me - I don’t like overly fatty foods. But it certainly gave me a kick start. There is research that says the high fat content causes cholesterol problems. There’s research that shows that while it may help people with diabetes to begin, long term it can cause erratic insulin levels due to the low carb intake. And of course there’s research that it’s great. I think you have to find the diet that works for you. Good luck whichever surgery you choose. -
This liquid diet is...not easy!
ChunkCat replied to Raevor85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try an electrolyte powder in your water. It is common for the liquid diets to trigger "keto flu" from the lack of minerals and nutrients compared to a normal diet. I found a packet of electrolytes a day really helped keep my energy up and the muscle cramps and headaches at bay. Good luck! ❤️ -
Liver Shrinkage Diet struggles
Arabesque replied to xKirstenx's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Apparently they called the first week of the pre surgery shake diet hell week at my surgeon’s office. There’s a lot of withdrawal symptoms associated with it (sugar, carbs, caffeine). Your cravings go crazy - you always want more the things you can’t have. Your emotions are all over the place which often makes you want to comfort yourself with food. On & on. Round & round. I was vey relieved I was placed on keto for the pre surgery diet. I had done the shake diet before. Two shakes & one small portion meal of steamed vegetables & plain cooked protein. Did it for 8 weeks & then again for 6 weeks a couple of years later as another diet I was trying. It ain’t easy even with one meal. Check with your dietician regarding swapping out a shake for a broth/soup. Some companies do offer them as well as shakes but they’re still going to be low calorie & go through you quickly being liquids. You’ve got this. You can do it. -
Not new to low carbs & so I am familiar with some side effects
BgR72 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have done the atkins diet. I have done the fasting programs. Warrior program. Went 25 hours without food & then eat one time & fast again. So I have some understanding of low carbs or no carbs. I used the keto strips to see if I got into the fat burning process. So I did different programs. Ultimately, I didnt get a consistent weight loss from these programs. Maybe 18 lbs then couldnt sustain the weight loss and or lose any more. I noticed that while on a low carb program or no carb that I kept a dry mouth. Also with the dry mouth was the bad breath because of the dry mouth. It was unpleasant. So, I started to chew gum more change mouthwash to non alcohol. It helped somewhat but more or so to cover up the dry mouth & bad breath. Basically, I found out that dry mouth and bad breath may be what some may deal with when carbs are low. So with the pre & post op program this may become an issue for some. I heard that we cant chew gum. I think that's what I read. I will confirm with the nutritionist. If so, I got to find a replacement because I know this will be a problem for me. Maybe sugarfree mints? IDK. Still wont be the same like chewing in gum. I wonder is this just for 6 months post surgery not to chew gum ? Got to ask my doctor to make sure. If someone knows Im sure I will read it. But will ultimately confirm yes or no when I see my doctor this week. Anyone dealing with dry mouth and or bad breath while on pre or post op program. -

Yes I totally agree I will not eat sugar free or keto. I will eat healthy and Whole Foods. I will focus on portion size for the rest of my life. I don’t even do sugar free now. I just can’t handle the artificial sweeteners or the sugar alcohols. I would rather just not have it. If I want something sweet I will eat a piece of organic high quality dark chocolate. Keto is just not realistic for lifetime and I love that my surgeon also doesn’t push us to go keto. He just makes it simple and straight forward like dr v. He says eat healthy if not then gain ur weight again. It’s simple. We have the tool we can either use or abuse it. A lot of the diet plans and eating plans r made by the nutritionist. My surgeon told me he has a small day in it. But he is just too busy with surgery and after care that he can’t focus on it. -
Just curious
Arabesque replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exactly as @SpartanMaker & @i bypassedmyphatass said. Diets are for the short term not the long term. The bariatric diet is devised for a specific short term purpose. While it is restrictive in the first weeks to support your healing, it does encourage you to slowly add more nutritional sources as you progress. One of the things you’ll do as you near maintenance is work out how you want to eat for the long term. Not a ‘diet’ but a sustainable way of eating that works for you & meets the needs of your body. I find it amusing when people consider our bariatric post surgery diet is high protein. It really is just focussed on protein first. Most of us are advised to consume 60g of protein while losing. In actuality, this is less than the daily recommended amount - 1g of protein per 0.8kg for our weight at that time. (Though I was told by my dietician as a woman in her 50s I should be having 1g per 1kg of weight.) So at my surgery, when I was about 85kg I should have been eating 68g - 85g of protein. Don’t know about you but before I started this process I never ate any where near the recommended amount of protein I needed. Remember if there was a single diet that worked for everyone, no one would be obese & we’d all eat exactly the same way. Diets are too restrictive to be be sustainable. That’s why we could lose weight on a diet but could never keep it off. I don’t follow a ‘diet’ at all now. I worked out what foods provide the nutrition I need, enable me to maintain without restricting my life & keep my body happy. Like, I aim to eat 70g of protein because of my absorption issue & I avoid bread, pasta, rice & potato because they sit heavily in my tummy. You’ll work out a way of eating that works for you too. Do your own research about nutrition. Start now so as you add new foods back into your diet you are making healthier choices & to see how your body responds to them. Remember any pro diet sites (keto, Atkins, etc.) will only give you biased information about how great & wonderful that diet is. Just ensure you’re eating a range of foods to satisfy your nutritional needs. In the meantime, follow your plan & the advice of your dietician & surgeon & listen to your body. -
Same. I've been trying to keep my carbs around 30g a day but pureed bean have been a lifesaver! I've always loved beans. I don't know if I can do the whole keto thing and not eat beans. Rice and bread, and pasta sure, but beans?

@JohnnyCakes Keto is just another fad diet. There are so many fad diets and all have one common denominator: they all fail long term. I am determined to do one thing and that is track what I am eating for the rest of my life, like taking the vitamins. Hell, I even made index cards to remind me to eat slow, chew 20x, liquids 30 minutes after eating, etc.

Trying to get out of my head....
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm looking into therapists. Not sure if it's a food issue or a trauma issue since I had a horrific childhood. My surgeon's office said not to worry about calories, also. They said to do 60-80g of protein, less than 50 carbs per day, and less than 50 fats per day. I'm more obsessive with the labels now than I was when I was on keto. It's also frustrating because in the 9 months I was on keto, I lost 100 pounds with only 1 short stall about 3 months in. It was so much easier to lose the weight back then than it is now. I'm fighting tooth and nail for every pound and hitting stall after stall. I worked out then and I work out now. But since it's such a struggle now, I'm finding I get panicky and start REALLY restricting what I eat. I've upped my work outs in both length and intensity, I religiously watch the labels and count every carb and fat in everything that goes in my mouth, and I not only don't eat junk but I don't think I even eat enough PERIOD. Yet here I am, day 4 of the same weight again. No matter what I do, I lose 5-7 pounds, then sit at a weight for a week, then lose 3 or 4, then sit another week, then lose 2 or 3 and the sit again. I have no issue with doing the work, but somehow I thought it would come a bit easier with only 20% of my stomach. It's harder to lose weight now than it was before the surgery!!!! Just freaks me out and my mind goes to not so good places. -

July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
KarenLR75 replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, we went on that last nature walk and it was NOT supposed to rain but in the middle of it, we got hit with a deluge of rain and wind (rain coming in sideways). Made it back to car after what felt like forever, completely soaked. We managed to walk 1.7 miles that day and it may have been more if it hadn't been for the rain but that's for another time. It's been 38 days since surgery now and I've lost 19.8 lbs. I'm made peace, at least for now, with the rate I'm losing as I was a very slow 'loser' prior to surgery (did keto for 15 months) so I have to remember without this surgery that I definitely would NOT have lost 19.8 lb in 38 days. Yes, in my first month or two of my 15 month keto journey I did lose a LOT...close to this same rate, but that was probably at least 10 lbs of water weight and that pace was not sustainable. Current weight loss rate is roughly .52 lbs a day which is actually pretty great in my mind. I do feel STRONGLY that I have to keep up the physical activity multiple times a wk. And I know there are more stalls in my future & even gains as I continue to walk with my daughter and am working on a plan to join a friend at a local gym to walk an air conditioned track with her and also to have access to other machines/weights/etc. For now I just wanted to give an update. The 'vent' that I left here the other day helped me to get things out so I could start breaking past the negativity that was going on in my mind and thinking. Thanks for the support. -

We both had the experal too ! Wrong spelling I’m sure 🤷♀️. Those first few days on the low calories you do feel so drained and you’re hormones are nuts and you’re going to feel better I promise but I know it’s hard to believe right now. I have a friend that calls that feeling the Keto flu lol. But I can’t remember exactly what day post op it was but FINALLY my body adjusted to the low calories and it feels normal now. Granted you get tired faster during activities than you would on higher intake but your day to day activities feel a lot more normal. I feel ya on the poop probs mine are far apart too. I take stool softeners to keep it from getting constipated type pain but still lots of days in between. we took vitamins from day 1 except for calcium we start that Tuesday at 1 mo PO. Dont apologize for venting this **** is HARD and a huge adjustment and sometimes we all just need a moment to whine! The metal cravings were BRUTAL for me at first. Downright depressing and seeing other people eat made me want to cry. That part gets better too for me it was around 14 days post op. Not saying I don’t have cravings anymore but not like before. Now it’s more like hey I’m down 37 lbs, I’m in ketosis, I’m killing this, is this thing I’m craving truly worth going allll the way backwards? I’ll try to talk myself out of it and have something else. Craving pizza? For lunch I might do laughing cow with a couple pieces of turkey pepperoni. Stuff like that. Or sometimes I just need to whine to a good friend and get it out! We’re all in this together ! -
Finally got my surgery date... when did you cut things out?
KarenLR75 replied to MeowAMR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I looked for a "smacks sibling" emoticon but alas, there was none. I've made it clear to my family what foods I consider to be 'trigger' foods - ones that either tempt me...or for now, ones that are just hard to see someone else eating. I seriously have tried to assure my family they don't need to be sneaking their food into other rooms...LOL. We all have to have some version of a 'new normal' life together. If I AM the one having a bad day or whatever is going on in my head, then I will excuse myself prior to the meal and they are not to take it personally. THEY still need to eat. What I do draw the line on in my own house (kids are technically out of the house) is any foods that were not part of the keto way of life my husband & I were followed up until my pre-op. As he has stated he will continue on keto, that is fine. My family knows the things that do NOT tempt me like ice cream or pie. If any of the miscreants bring in cake or cookies, there will be a brawl but it's not because of this surgery, I'd have had an issue with it when I was doing keto. Most of the time even that stuff no longer bothers me but like someone new in recovery from let's say 'alcohol addiction', people who are near and dear should not be drinking around them, especially not when someone is new in recovery (the exception here is that my family needs to eat to live so I do not expect them to abstain, just to be thoughtful). I see the surgery and the first few months after that as being new to a different type of recovery. Recovering from food addiction but NEVER cured just like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) treat addiction. Everyone is hopefully on some path of recovery but you are never considered 'cured' which keeps you on guard against relapsing although it can happen and you just get back on the proverbial horse. LOL, maybe next time you are presented with a temptation, imagine drinking or eating it in front of your doctor...I was going to say 'in front of a mirror' which is something I've used before when I was...eating WAY too much and that mirror thing has stopped me quite a few times. Whichever would deter you the most...LOL -
