  1. July 2021 was my highest weight… so It looks like we are on similar paths I got a lot to loose in order to gain my life fully back. I hope to loose around 200 lbs with the surgery if I can keep the positive lifestyle changes (and actually start exercising)

    Pre op diet weight loss

    Congratulations on your loss and getting a head start on those changes! That will certain help when you get back to a regular diet! I’m on day 3 of my 8 day liquid diet … (3 Protein Shakes a day, 24 oz 100% fruit juice [no sugar added] & a minimum of 64 oz of Water. I can also have unlimited sugar free Jello, popsicles, broth/bouillon or zero electrolyte drinks that count towards my water goal). So far I have had broth every day, it helps cut the sweet of the juice and Protein shakes, but I haven’t felt hungry or the need for more… yet. (The high protein diet is only 7 days, day 8 is all clear liquids - 60 oz of juice, 64 oz or more of water, plus I can have unlimited amounts of broth/boullion, sugar free popcicles, “zero” electrolight drinks, low calories water flavor aids… nothing red though).  As of this morning I have lost 10 pounds on my liquid diet (I have a lot to loose) - which brings me to 62 pounds lost so far since June 2021 (my highest weight).

    August surgery buddies!

    Day 3 of pre-op diet (5 more to go). I’m down 10 pounds since staring the pre-op diet (62 total since I started trying to loose weight last year). Today was the first time I really “saw” weight loss in myself. My clothing have been looser, but I hadn’t noticed obvious body changes until this morning. It hit me - there’s going to be a lot of skin.. lol. Already getting some “wings”, but honestly I don’t mind it’s a badge of accomplishment at this point. I’ve earned those wings. 🤣 Today is the first day I have felt actual hunger, but I’ve been more active today than the last two days and it wasn’t bad, the protein shake helped. I also was around food and ok… but I have to stay off FB and avoid ads…. Those pictures kill me!! My plan is to get all my requirements in (shakes, juice, water) and if I feel like I need something more I’ll add in broth, jello… or one of the other allowed “free foods” to tide me over. I’m hoping I can drop at least another 11 or 12 lbs before Tuesday. That would put me in a really good position to get under the 300 lb mark before the end of the month and I have seen the scale point to anything in the 200’s in a looong time. I’m almost as excited to hit that number as I am to get to onederland! Lol. Now that will be a celebration!!

I do have a target weight of 190lbs I’m 5’5 I had started at 358lbs and am now at 258lbs I don’t know if my goal is reasonable but it’s just something to work towards and keep trying to get to it. Our bodies have been through a major change and we are not going to reach our goals overnight. We all have a lot that needs to change including tightening of loose skin which is also extra weight which takes longer to get rid of. Just don’t give up on your self and keep your eyes on your goal. It might take over a year to get that but it may not take that long. Just stay focused you got this we all do 😁
  5. I hope you’re feeling better. Loving yourself starts with the words you use in yourself. Remember that you are still the same you, your body still works the same way, just with lesser inertia. Before and after pictures that I take just for me help. Of course I see that my skin is sagging everywhere, my boobs aren’t perky or high, but I also see that I have smaller thighs, I can see the veins popping on my forearms after my workout, something that I would never have noticed before. Small things like that make me happy. Give your skin some time to recover. Your collagen will work for you. I’m almost 40. Been overweight my whole life so I accept my skin and its folds are just like the surgery scars- they tell my story. Find what makes you happy with yourself, even if it’s just your more defined clavicle. And hold on to it. You’ll get to a place where you give thanks to your body for the home it is giving to your self and soul.

    Starting my liquid (liver shrinking) diet tomorrow

    Thank you! My pre-op weightloss kinda froze for the last two weeks. I am hoping the liquid diet gives me a nudge to loose another 10 pounds or so before the procedure (mine is only 8 days). I figure every pound I loose before is one I don't need to loose after. Best of luck over the next week... I will look forward to seeing your progress and cheering you on!
  7. @The Greater Fool, thanks for clarifying on the duct tape! I totally missed where you said put something over the staple line! I was envisioning the duct tape going right onto the staples and it hurt just to think about it! I hear you on the medical tape. Some of them won't even stick to a bandage, much less your skin. Personally, I've found the cloth ones stick the best (and can be used without scissors, a nice bonus), followed by the plastic varieties. I've never found the paper tapes to work very well at all.
  8. I have hard others talk about a mini-gastric bypass, not as often as sleeve or RNY, but I do recall reading posts on here. The best advice I can offer for the weight loss is to try to break your over all goal into mini-goals. For me those have been more “achievable”. 18.2 pounds is a great start, your almost 1/2 way to your goal! Start practicing the things you will need to do once you have the surgery… smaller bites, chewing more thoroughly, measured /weighed servings, portions on your plate, hitting your water goals, not eating or drinking 30 min before or after eating. Also remember to add in some exercise. I do simple weight bands and walking (alternating days). Those things helped me loose some extra pounds as I’m working through my pre-op. Before you know it you will be at your goal. My surgery is the 16th, I start my pre-op liquid diet tomorrow. I noticed that I feel fuller quicker and can’t eat as much just from implementing those things … and I’m gradually loosing weight as I go. Good luck!

    Finally made it to this point

    Thank you @SpartanMaker for pointing out things on which I could have been clearer. I know I often go overboard in detail but not so in this case. Hard to believe isn't it? I put plan exercise / movement, such as walking, outside the area we have a choice in experiencing pain or not. I was doing the proscribed walks around the ward for the 3 days I was there. The pain with such activity was more about getting up or sitting down. The actual walking wasn't a problem. In the hospital I had a bed that had to be the work of Satan himself as I found the guest chair far more manageable than the bed. In my mind I was thinking of the frequent bathroom trips, fetching food or drink, or other such "elective" upping and downing. A recliner gets you out of half of the upping and downing, a pillow mountain is nearly as good. On the taping the staples with duct tape I thought I was clear one should avoid applying the tape to the actual staples. Putting petroleum jelly on the staples, or placing gauze on the staples or even duct tape facing sticky side up all work fine. The point is to pull the skin together so that the pulling doesn't land on the staples. I haven't found a medical tape that can actually work as well as duct tape. I did the same thing after my Abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck) when the staples ran vertically identical to WLS post--op, with the extra added bonus of horizontally hip to hip. Normally staples aren't an issue for post-op on Tummy Tucks, but as it turned out they had to rip me open and fix the hemorrhaging. So staples were the choice for scar tissue wasn't the overriding issue. I also had 2 drains this time around. My surgeon actually got a kick out of it when he saw me plastered in duct tape. No staples were pulled in the use of duct tape. But a whole lot of staple line pain that could have been wasn't. I think we generally agree on pain management. Generally it's a bad idea to "tough it out" for a period as getting out of pain is harder than staying out of pain. Narcotics don't work well on acute pain situations (such as staple pain) but does work well on chronic pain (such as staple pain). In other words, narcotics don't work on the surprise, screaming pain caused by movement, but do work on the constant pain that is going on even when you aren't moving. As always talk to your surgeon.   10. I also brought a bunch of stuff but in the end (2 night stay) I only used my slippers, extra long phone charging cord, plug, phone stand and toiletries. I did download some movies on my phone that were favorites and this helped me fall asleep. I wore home what I wore to the hospital. Comfy, loose pants and a t-shirt. I slept, drank and walked.
  11. I was sleeved a week ago yesterday, and my steristrips are starting to fall off. Most of them look like normal incisions and are healing nicely. This one is my drainage incision and has a weird indention and looks like an open wound. It doesn’t hurt and isn’t leaking anything, so maybe it’s just stitched down under the skin, but seeing a gaping hole is very nerve racking. Is this something I should go in for, or is this type of incision normal for the drainage incision? Thank you!

    Finally made it to this point

    Now we're in the territory where my surgical experience is meaningful. It seems like time for a colorful expletive. I had an open surgery, so they cut from just below my sternum to just above my pubic area. It took 30 some odd staples to seal me up. I also had a drain. Any movement was very painful. Any tug on the drain made the staple pain desirable. My #1 advice: Don't move. Do you really need to breath? When you simply have to move there are two schools of thought: 1) Move fast; 2) Move slow. Moving fast scrunches all that movement, and all that pain, to one short but intense burst of pain. But then it's done. Moving slow allows you to evade some pain, but the pain you have happens over a longer period of time but can seem to be at a lower intensity. I say mix it up. Keep the pain guessing. Here is the crappy part: Those precious oxycodone won't help the acute pain from moving around. You could be barely conscious but move slightly and the pain shoots right through. Save the pills for when you are achy, oxy does a great job for persistent pain. If you have a recliner go there and live for a while. Getting up and down is much easier when you are starting from a sitting position. If you don't have a recliner, build one on your bed with pillows. Duct Tape. Put duct tape over the staples so they aren't being pulled. You might want to put something non-sticky over the staples, With no skin pulling on the staples, you will have dramatically less pain when you move. Some folks may think surgical / medical tape would be the way to go, after all it's what the Docs use. Notice they didn't use any of those tapes... because they don't work. And sending you home in duct tape would have had people laughing. Trust me: Duct Tape. Things will improve dramatically when you get the staples plucked out. Those first minutes after those staples are gone are heaven. Getting them plucked out is a different story. 2 out of 3 staples say good-bye peacefully and quietly, and just as you relax thinking it's smooth sailing from here, that 3rd staple strikes. Yikes! But then the next 2 convince you that it's back to smooth sailing, when suddenly you're climbing down from the ceiling. But think about just 2-3 minutes from now when all the pain will be gone. This may be a good time for a pill. In no time you will be whining about the stall you started just about the time your staples came out. Good luck, Tek

    Marriage changes post op

    My marriage is the same pre op and post op. My hubby has always been supportive of me and never said anything to me about my weight. He was not all in for the surgery and still doesnt care for it. But he has seen the impact physically and mentally for me. I still struggle at times and shame myself. He would never do that to me though. He is a good guy and does his best to build me up. Its my own struggles that I battle with.....I still see myself at my highest weight even tho I can see in the mirror how much my face has slimmed down and I notice the weight loss because of the way my clothes are so loose on me and the inches I am losing from my body......but to get passed the morbidly obese person I still see in the mirror is more of a challenge for me than my marriage. In time I hope I can move passed what I see in the mirror versus what is actual.
  14. I had the sleeve 2010 and then I asked could I have the bypass 2021 a long road but worth it in the end but I did get told I wouldn't lose as much because of the previous surgery they said I'd only lose 3 stone and I'm now here 112 pounds lighter got saggy skin but no one sees it good luck

    Jealous!

    I used that wait time to loose weight and develop hobbies so that the actual surgery would “lock in” that pre-surgical weight loss. Maybe it’s just magical thinking, or not, but it worked so far. I ended up waiting 11 months to have surgery from meeting my surgeon. You’ve got this!
  16. Hello all, This is my first post here so if I mess up on etiquette I apologize. I am two years out from a very successful VSG surgery. I went from 265lbs to 175lbs - I’m 24 and 5’2, barely any loose skin, and I’m very happy with the results. However I have PCOS and was estimated to be able to lose more if I didn’t have that to contend with, and I wasn’t able to hit my realistic OR ideal goals. I know I’m much better off than I was by far, but I still wasn’t fully happy, so I put down a deposit for a DS revision surgery. Because of Covid I had to reschedule it to January 2023. But now I’m suddenly worried and having doubts. I can’t seem to find anyone who has revised from VSG to DS, and I’m worried about losing TOO much weight. My surgeon has had me come entirely off vitamins as my labs are perfect without them, and admittedly I don’t miss them, so that’s a downfall but one I’m willing to accept. My surgeon does also perform RNY and reconstruction but my sleeve hasn’t stretched back out, and he has told me that DS is often referred to as the second stage to VSG. Mostly I’m looking for advice and anecdotes from this forum! Is there anyone who did it in two stages instead of one? Pros and cons? Tips? I’m desperate for anyone who has any experience with this.
  17. I hope I am replying correctly... Thank you and congratulations on your weight loss!! That is a huge accomplishment! Good luck on your skin surgery. My primary doctor referred me to positive change classes and I took the nutrition class about 3 years ago. After that and during covid I gained soooo much weight and she (primary) recommended the surgery. I took classes online and then did my blood tests and that was it. Then I had a hospital stay (unrelated to weight) March, 2021 so I had to wait on my surgery. Fast forward to April of 2022 and my doctor said I should be ok to have weight loss surgery. I contacted Positive Change and they did not require me to retake classes and reordered my blood tests, I had a psy evaluation, and did not pass the first because I had not lost any weight (I actually gained) and he didnt think I put in the work. I had another appointment with him about 6 weeks later (mid July) and had lost weight so he approved me. I just had a phone consultation with a surgeon and he approved me for the sleeve on the condition that my specialist says its OK. He said the sleeve is better for me due to the medications I have to take. Since I went through my classes a long time ago, I watched tons of videos on youtube from other surgical hospitals etc. A lot of places seem like they are really connected to their patients and give them so much support. For me, I feel like I am on an island. I haven't talked to a nutritionist, or anyone else walking me through this process. Most of my info this time around is via youtube; and I just found this place last night. What I am most worried about is drinking water. I get migraines if I get slightly dehydrated. I have been working out to lose weight and noticed how much I drink. I am trying to sip water throughout the day but I am failing at keeping myself hydrated and have had a migraine almost every day. How do you do it? Set alarms? How do you go through your day sipping so much water? How do you work like that? I also saw that you cannot eat gummy vitamins is that true? I cannot find that in the positive change book, maybe I missed it. Thank you for your support and all the help!
  18. Hi there, I am in so cal and went through Kaiser. I went to the South Bay facility. they definitely make you jump through hoops with all their pre qualifications (like classes, psych eval, etc). But it was so worth it. It was done as an outpatient procedure because it was in the midst of Covid, I had the gastric sleeve done because I was worried about vitamin deficiency issues. i am now about a year and a half out from surgery. My friend/mom was really my support because my family/husband thought it was unnecessary (drs told me it would save my life). My friends husband went through it so he was a good sounding board, but This forum is awesome for any questions you might have and I honestly went here first. i am pretty tall at over 6 feet but my highest weight was 330 lbs and now I am at 155-160 pounds. I am currently looking into trying to get skin removal surgery. In case you are interested in that down the road: apparently they make you take classes for that as well. complications I had: I had a slight issue with my blood pressure being too low post surgery and was taken off my meds which fixed the problem. Kaiser was very responsive to the concern and the surgical team was great about conferring with my other specialists (I have many) because they are all part of the same Kaiser system. if you have any questions feel free to reach out! good luck!
  19. I have a serving of the Verisol collagen bioactive peptides by Betha inc. in my coffee every morning. It was ConsumerLab's top pick. I don't count it towards my protein goal for reasons people explained above. I have been using it for almost two years for my skin. It helps with my skin elasticity.
  20. I'm 4 days out from an arm lift, J lift, and breast lift that included replacing and downsizing old implants. Basically, I have sutures from about an inch below my elbow, up my entire upper arm, down through my armpit, and continuing along the curve of my breast with only about an inch or two gap from the other side. Then anchor incisions on the breasts as well. Apparently, one of my old implants was ruptured as well so took a bit longer than planned. I'm doing pretty good - the only challenge is some tingling/loss of sensation in my thumb and index finger on my right hand (dominant). Dr. isn't worried and think as swelling in the arm goes down it will improve. Otherwise, I feel a bit like a stuffed sausage but not too bad! I was able to shower and switched to Tylenol today. Hopefully, the swelling will go down little by little over the coming days although I realize it will be months before my results are final. So far I can tell the arms are going to be MUCH better. Even all swelling the contour is significantly better. The "j lift" should mean no more skin pushing out under my arm from my bra, and my chest feels like its going to be the right size. Once closer to final I'll share some pics. Too much effort right now
  21. I put a scoop of collagen in my coffee every morning, and I feel like it's made a difference in my skin and hair. I slacked off on using it for a month or so and feel like my skin looked noticeably "saggier". My hair regrowth has been fantastic, my hair was on the thin side before my surgery but it's now growing back thick and oddly, curly! In addition to the collagen, I take a pretty big dose of biotin alongside my multivitamin (6000 mcg) and that seems to be helping.

    Marriage changes post op

    I have lost 100+ lbs previously (a few times) and there really wasn't any change in my relationship. Usually she looses weight with me so it kinda just works out. I do most of the cooking, so when you are eating what I am cooking you will naturally loose weight. Point is, I don't imagine much change in the relationship due to weight loss. Although, I have always been bigger even loosing 100+ lbs. So, if/when I actually get to my goal who knows what happens. She wants to drink and party all the time and I don't drink now, probably will some after a while but for now no. So I tend to sit there getting bored while we are out and shes getting drunk. Plus I have learned drunk people are really annoying when you are not drinking. I imagine long term this may cause some problems if we can't more equal on free time events, etc. However, every other time I lost a bunch of weight my labido has increased but not this time. I literally have no desire for anything sexual, AT ALL. I force myself to try to keep the peace and am not into it at all. It is crazy.

    Low weight loss

    I agree with all of the above and can add that as you are doing a good amount of exercise you might need to up your calories in order to loose more weight. If your body is in starvation mode then your body wont let your weight drop. When you next contact your team they will sort you out. You are doing great.
