Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
@Biddy zz and @GreenTealael Your question about Mrs. Biddy getting shakes refers to hypoglycemia. You need to get a blood glucose meter and monitor it. I think Dr. Fung says some of this is to be expected in the early days (shakiness), but am not quite sure? One thing for sure is that she is a sugar burner by virtue of her long-standing vegetarian lifestyle--as most SAV diets are defined here. But it may be diff in NZ. Funny, my observation of a large portion of Americans who claim to be "vegetarian" are posers. What they are REALLY and TRULY claiming is a myth and the reality is that most of the so-called vegetarians are really just "pasta and rice, bread, crackers, chips and cheese addicts who don't eat meat protein". I know that sounds harsh but I've seen it in action here and these people are MO. I eat more veggies and berries than they do even as a RNY post-surgery patient. And example of a bonafide vegetarian would be @GreenTealael. Her menus and food choices are beautiful, well-rounded and balanced (and are also lower carb to the point of keto). So I would think the easier route which she may not want to do would be to go low carb for a while first. Which will also take those 3-5lbs off of her in a hurry. You can still do that with vegetarian lifestyle, you just have to be very tricky about where the protein comes from...is she vegan or vegetarian? Does she eat eggs or fish or dairy of any kind? Do y'all have quorn protein there? Then once she is used to having cut out all "white stuff" and most grains, it gets WAY easier to IF for longer periods of time.If she doesn't want to do that, then she needs to try IF in baby steps. And that would be slowly delay breakfast for an hour longer each morning, but it's a slow walk down. Keep the nightly food curfew and try to get her to cut out sugar and white flours, subbing for whole grains, legumes, etc and slower acting carbohydrate while adding in LOTS of varied leafy greens, cruciferous veg, brassicas, onion/garlic/leek/green onion, and great herbs., and limiting the serving sizes of root veg and winter squashes. But again, please get Dr. Fung's book on The Complete Book of Fasting and don't take dietary advice from me. I'm just a schmoe on the internet and only can say what works for me according to my super-messed up metabolism!!!! ((hugs)) -
Health expert panel ranks diets

I have done a lot of research on diets (as most obese ppl have, I suspect) and what I find is, from Keto to Vegan to Paleo to Weight Watchers they all have something in common: 1) avoid sugar 2) avoid refined grains and other highly processed carbs 3) avoid processed food and fake food even if it has no carbs (hot dogs, diet soda, etc) 4) eat whole food as close to nature as possible 5) eat your veggies! Beyond that there is a ton of variations and different things work for different people -
Health expert panel ranks diets

I think it depends on the individuals genetic make up or health conditions. The diet you list is great for my uterine fibroids, but bad for my hypothyroidism. Keto was great for my thyroid, bad for my fibroids. The only thing I know is when I eat gluten and carbs my body smells and I'm sluggish, so I HAVE to keep my total carbs below 30 / 20 net. Sugar below 15 for day, try to keep it at 10. -
Am I eating enough.
FluffyChix replied to jsafrica's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I honestly think your protein shake sounds like overkill. Shoot for 60-80g protein daily (per my RD/program), get your 64+oz liquid in. Eat lean, dense protein first, low glycemic veg second, healthy fats, plus anything else in small quantities. I also was eating somewhere between 500-700cals/day and hitting my goals. I kept carbs down to 20ish grms net--between 20-30g total. Keto needs to be modified if you're obese. You do not need a bunch of dietary fat when you're trying to burn/utilize fat IMHO. A simple low carb approach works better for me, cuz my fat is much lower than modern day "keto definition" or the "LCHF" regimine. Psssst, I'm still in ketosis by virtue of my caloric restriction and also my carb restriction. LOL. So in "theory" you could say I'm "keto" but I don't do all the fat bomb, exogenous fat stuff right now. Maybe I will add fat once I'm trying to maintain a very low body fat weight...I would theoretically need the exogenous/dietary fat at that point. Oh and equally important--take those vitamins! Also start walking daily. -
Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
BadWolf523 replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a cold this week so I never made it to the gym which kind of bums me out because I enjoy going. However, I stuck to my eating plan, which I decided would be keto, and I lost 7lbs. This came after a 3 week stall. I’ve noticed that some people noticed weight gain during their stall. I just sat at 251 for 3 weeks. I wonder what causes to see weight gain. -
Hi, i am torn as my brain thinks if i stick to keto then i will lose more weight, but im losing very slow and im wondering if im not eating enough. I am hiting my water goals. I've added high Fiber snacks back into my diet to help with this. My new go to - I add it to my daily cottage cheese to increase my protein and fiber Enlightened Plant Protein Gluten Free Roasted Broad (Fava) Bean Snack, Garlic and Onion also Raw Rev Glo Protein Bars, Creamy Peanut Butter & Sea Salt, 1.6 Ounce Bar (Pack of 12) 15g Protein, 2g Sugar, 14g Fiber, Keto-Friendly, Vegan, Plant-Based Protein, Gluten-Free Snack Bar https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071CPQFCH/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PVS5PCE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1 or at night I'll indulge in a spoonful of peanut butter. But so far these three things have really helped me. I'm just 6.5 weeks out and my daily cal range between 600 - 700 depending on if I eat nuts or have protein shakes. If not, I really try to get my proteins in through strictly food. Additionally, I know it's OK to use protein shakes to count towards total fluids, but I do not. My decaf coffee and protein shakes are counted towards "meals" and not fluid. I also drink anywhere from 64 to 96 oz of (flavored) water per day

I never drove a car. Never. Ever in my life. Not for 18 years. And then there was the day when I drove a car for the first time. I never stented a carotid artery. Never. Ever in my life. Not for 41 years. And then there was the day when I did it for the first time. So the answer to your question is: If you never learnt good food habits in the fist place - learn to have them now! This is not about magic! This is about learning new skills by practicing them! Practicing them over and over and over and OVER again, until they feel like second nature to your brain. Honestly? Some people have to learn the hard way that this particular way didn't work for them. You can provide help/guidance along the way but in the end people choose their own way and that is not always the way that works out fine. Some people need a second chance because they messed up first. If these people are honest with themselves they should realize that they made mistakes along the way and now they have a chance to do it in another way. If they choose to make the same mistakes... well, not everyone will be successful. In the end it's just as simple as that. What rubs me the wrong way is that so many people seem to come back with a regain after they were quite successful and are on their way to make the same mistakes again, fueled by the "advice" to "go back to basics" and to "try harder". And because they were so successfully losing once they try to do the same thing they did back then - not realizing that they're making the same mistakes by going back to these same old strategies that didn't work in the first place for them. You're gung-ho about it, you eat low carb/lowfat/keto/lowcalorie/whateverrocksyourboat, you go to the gym five times a week, you follow all these fancy rules, you do this, you do that and more and then... something happens, whatever that something might be for this person and BOOM - things go down the drain. And what are you going to do then? Trying again to live a lifestyle that's obviously not going to make you happy? Or are you taking a leap of faith and try something different?

Definitely this. The brain doesn't consider our hair to be a priority, so when stress hits us (losing weight, surgery, stress, etc. . . ) hair is usually the first thing to go. Instead of directing nutrients to promote hair growth, it's now being redirected to another job in your body. Hair loss after a major weight loss event affects people in different ways. Some will lose a little, some will lose a lot (like I did when I lost 90 lbs), and some won't lose at all. It's a horrible genetic lottery. It may sound a little dire, but the only thing to help you prior to this event is to be prepared for it. Make sure you're getting the protein amount recommended by the doctor, drink plenty of water, and get your vitamins in. If your hair is still falling out in clumps a year out - then there could be a nutritional aspect to your hair loss. Find a shampoo/conditioner set that builds volume and learn that you don't need to wash your hair every day. Manipulating your hair to make it seem fuller will be difficult, but the hair will grow back. Me? I mean, I lost a ton of hair back when I lost 90lbs through the keto diet. I am not looking forward to losing it again, but I've talked with my husband and will likely shave it off + find a really nice quality wig. I've been wanting to shave my hair anyhow, so it may be the perfect opportunity.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
photogirl70 replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Megan Sadler I'm doing very low carb and low fat too. My doc said to NOT do actual Keto b/c it's high fat. I'm just focusing on protein. I eat a lot of shrimp. Alot of the keto recipes can be converted to low or mid fat. I find that protein is for the most part keeping me satisfied. Depending on the time of month, I've gotten kind of snacky a few time. I need to turn that off! I have been collecting recipes here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LoPqBWnVn3ZejFugIvfmSsTIUmi1iBNk6zo4gbCxUFc/edit?usp=sharing I think that is the link to let anyone have access to the file. -
Surgery is in 3 weeks and feeling very alone
1BigHeart replied to amanda-xo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are strong! I've felt alone at times, but have been finding good support in unexpected places like this forum and family that I never ever thought would support me in this endeavor. Dealing with the "unknowing advisors" (You know them...."Just eat healthy, go keto, etc.") is tough. My best response is to smile and say, "I'm doing what's best for me." You got this! -
Hi all, I am looking for a dietician in the DFW area. Any recommendations? Been stuck in the 310 area, down from 432, but I still want to get to 240. I was back to 325, but started doing Keto, and came back down to the 310 area. Usually floating between 310 and 314. Been stuck for last year and a half, roughly, and feeling frustrated. Thanks in advance.

What did you tell people at work?
SleeveinIL replied to megolego's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I tell people that I had hiatal hernia surgery - which is true, I had it with the sleeve. The restricted eating is the same for that surgery as WLS. If people ask about my weight lost specifically, I tell them I eat less and am doing Keto and exercise which I didn't do at all before I started this journey. All of these responses are accurate! I am not comfortable telling everyone at work because the gossip factory is just too active here and I don't want people judging/talking about me. My lunch buddy and my boss know and that is it. -

Megan Sadler replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is my current venture for the next few weeks. I’ll be getting the tiny avocados at Trader Joe’s, and making the salmon separately, adding in some protien powder to boost the content. T look into whole 30, and Keto recipes I’m not a fan of Keto but it’s low carb. Paleo is also good. Whole 30 doesn’t allow sugar. They’re about taking control of food. We didn’t get here by being in control. I didn’t do this surgery to hate food. I love it, I just need to be in control. -
Percentages of Protein Carbs, Fat
Ed_NW replied to Terry Lincoln's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think you kind of want to look at Keto or low carb type diets pre-op because that seems to be the post-op lifestyle for most people. About 20% carbs and the rest protein and fat should make up the percentage of your daily calories. -
When Did Your Weight Stabalize
BadWolf523 replied to logicwand's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally broke through 250 after a three week stall. I started doing keto and going to the gym 3 times a week. My workout: 20 minute Cardio (I try to do at least a mile) Dynamic Stretches (bear crawls, frog jumps, inch worm) Strength training (squats, lunges and all arm exercises are weighted.) Another 20 minutes are cardio (my second mile) Stretch and go home My workout is never the same. Maybe download the Nike fit app great workouts for all levels on there. -
Diabetic Burnout
ummyasmin replied to Queen Grandma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a Type2 and had a lapband back in 2009, starting at 153.5 kilos. I lost 20 kgs. However I had a lot of problems (sprung a leak in the tubing in the beginning and it never really worked for me) so I'm having a revision to mini gastric bypass. The thing with my diabetes is I get hypos if I eat high carbs (sugar) and then nothing else for ages. So eg. a croissant for breakfast and then by 1pm I'm having a hypo. My theory is that the body overshoots the insulin for the croissant so I have too much floating around that has nothing to do but send my blood sugar crashing. When I go keto, eg keep carbs to between 20 and 50 grams a day, I simply don't get hypos. So you may find the problem for you is too many high sugary carbs and surgery and limiting your carbs will really help re: hypos. My doc says they perform this surgery specifically to send diabetes into to remission, so it's definitely something to consider. Many blessings Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -
Try looking like you're on an "obvious diet" around everyone. (Keto/Paleo/Atkins/whole 30,etc) and completely embrace diet/excercise banter around them (it'll look like diet and exercise instead of surgery - if you are trying to hide it in plain sight) It's what I do. I didn't want to tell anyone about surgery but the lifestyle changes I had no problem explaining. Damn, just saw this was in the Guy's room... Can't delete Sorry guys

Do what you know you can stick to. All diets work, but is it sustainable for you personally to stick to it long term? Keto is similiar to most bariatric plans just a heavy emphasis on fats so adding in fats. But i will say lately i’ve seen lots of keto people on instagram go on “carb feasts” for a few days and then go back to keto again to lose it which to me doesn’t make sense. It’s continuing the yoyo diet. Find whatever balance works for you as long as you’re getting the necessary amounts of protein per day.

Hard time staying on plan
MargoCL replied to MassMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ingredients 3 sprigs Dill, fresh - finely chopped, no stems if possible 1 Onion, very small - diced or minced 6 Zucchini squash - peeled and grated 1 tbsp Flour (we have used coconut for keto and real flour prior to keto) 1 tbsp Salt (enough to cover zucchini) 1/2 cup Sour Cream (optional) Wash and peel the zucchini. Use a large holed grater to shred the zucchini Put zucchini shreds in a small bowl, add salt - let it stand about an hour in refrigerator. Before cooking zucchini, squeeze the excess water out. To cook: Using a Med / Large pot add the onion slices, cook till opaque. Add zucchini in pot, then barely cover the squash with water. Add chopped dill. When the zucchini changes to a creamier color, it is done. In a small bowl, flour with a enough water to disolve and make smooth Add the flour to zucchini while stirring to avoid clumps until smooth. If too thick, thin it out by adding 1 tbsp of sour cream, then one tbsp of the cooking liquid that you set aside. Repeat until the desired consistancy is acheived. -
I have a 4 people in my life that know I had surgery. And my BF and I decided not to tell his parents because like yours they are very thin by nature and don't believe in surgery thinking it's the lazy way out. When the holidays roll around and I'm forced to be with them, I'll do exactly as @GreenTealael stated. They already know that my BF and I started our Keto lifestyle at the beginning of the year and my weightloss was much slower than his. So, hopefully it won't stir up any questions. As Charlie75 stated; you need to do what's right for you. This is your journey, not theirs. My only words of advise to you are: be prepared, while we all want the surgery to be a miracle thing and pop out of the hospital at / near our goal weight, that's not reality. Follow the forums, research as much as possible because there will be tough times ahead post surgery too with stalls, not feeling 100%, having doubts or regrets, etc. But remember it's all a part of the process and you need to trust it. In the long run, you will be much happier and healthier. Good luck to you, remember you have an entire web of support at your fingertips.
