You've been doing this version of Keto since 2013? Has it helped you lose or maintain, or was it to stabilize health issues? Was it hard to maintain for years at a time? VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

Does Allulose cause dumping?
Darktowerdream replied to Briswife15's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It’s good to know about allulose, I don’t know when I’ll get to eat protein bars again. They were always my go to when I wasn’t up to a meal. Especially breakfast or dinner. The Hero bars are good. I wish quest hadn’t switched to using corn fiber but I did like their bars. Another favorite is No Cow bars. And oh yeah one bars. Halo Top was dinner for me when I didn’t feel like eating. I haven’t tempted myself with it yet. Even though I have yet to be able move past the liquid protein phase, except for some BariatricPal soup or noodle soup. Which even the noodles make me feel sick. So I’m very tempted by halo top. I’ve seen some other new Keto friendly ice creams in the store. I wonder which one has the most protein per portion. I don’t think I’d be very good making my own. I did try to make protein ice popsicles. -
Has Anyone Kept Their Surgery A Secret?
emma93 replied to Dtrain84's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It is your choice and your body, you do not need to explain anything to anyone. But! Just always say on facebook "hitting the gym," or pictures of healthy food. Sign up for a 10k or sprint triathlon (even if you do not end up doing it) just tell people "Ya I am training for this sporting event and the weight is just falling off!" Just say I am on the KETO diet and only drink green tea. I told my co-workers which is true, that I am having surgery to fix my debilitating acid reflux that was causing my esophagus to develop pre-cancerous cells, and fix a hernia, so I just say everything without saying "gastric bypass," and I just mention that they are taking part of my stomach to help with the reflux. -
Who will you tell (or not tell) about WLS?
SorryNameTaken replied to ChubRub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am planning on being pretty open about my revision surgery. I know people are going to ask how I've lost so much weight and if I can inspire someone to look into it that may have been thinking about it, great, if they want to judge me, great. I feel like one of my gastric band downfalls was not being open about it. I think had I been more open with everyone I wouldn't have felt the pressure to eat like a "normal" person around people who did not know I was banded. Granted, I don't think that would have eliminated all my band problems, but I can't help but wonder if I would have been somewhat more successful if I had broadcast it to the world. That said, I'm dreading telling my husband's family. I think they are much more likely to be overly judgmental about it than most people in my life. These are people that think doing keto is the easy way out, so I'm sure they'll have plenty to say, but I'm okay with that. I'm really confident in why I am choosing to revise, so I'll do my best to not be offended by it. I'm planning on significantly cutting back my meat consumption with my revision, so I can fall back on that for people I don't feel need to know about surgery. -
Who will you tell (or not tell) about WLS?
ChubRub replied to ChubRub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel like people are judgmental no matter how someone loses weight. I've gotten negative responses in the past from doing both Keto, Medifast, and even WW. A few years ago I dropped 75lbs and when people asked me, I just said in a joking manner "I stopped eating! It sucks!" Ha ha! -
That was an ave day for me for 18 years as low carb. I did dr Atkins '72 diet, the original keto diet. People call keto today is super aggressive with fat at75% or higher. people use keto and low carb interchangeably. I believe if u are under about 40-50g of daily carbs u r in ketosis. Some can be closer to 70 and still letogenic. You can also be super low calorie and be ketogenic. i presently ave between 650-850 Cala on most days. I eat from 60-70g protein; roughly 25-30g net carbs;and around 30g of fat per day. I am ketogenic not only due to carb and protein suppression but also due to low calories.

@sillykitty No, quite the contrary, these 3-4 years in maintenance on realfood keto have been the longest time in my adult life that I’ve been able to live without binge eating. Which is why I’m sure it’s the best woe for me also now after having the sleeve.

I am pre-surgery, I have five months left until my insurance will approve or deny me for surgery. I am doing keto to maintain/not gain weight before the insurance review. I love meat, cheese, eggs and non starchy veggies - so Keto is easy for me. I don't miss sugar too much, but Atkins makes low carb sweet treats to satisfy that craving. The best part of keto for me is that looking at the nutrition label and identifying if I can eat a certain product is so easy. Total carbs - Fiber - sugar alcohols = net carbs. I track my carbs and calories in Myfitness pal, by editing my macros columns so I can focus on the items I need to pay attention to. I have also found a recipe with cheese, egg and seasonings to make "flatbread". It is deliciously cheesy and I turned that same recipe in to lasagna "noodles" and found a low carb pasta sauce to make a lasagna tonight!

People say Keto .... but do they mean low carb? Keto has high fat, low protein, super low carb. "The general ratio of macros to follow is 70% fats, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates" I don't see how most WLS patients can get to 60 g+ protein, if it only comprises 25% of their calories, especially if they are eating a reasonable amount of calories a day. I also think that 5% calories from carbs is very very hard for most people to sustain long term. The constant counting and sense of deprivation leads people to fall off the wagon.

I did a quick google search on this and it seems kinda sketchy. It claims to "put you in ketosis" and "keep you there longer". I'm not going to go into the explanation into this here but it can easily be found on the internet. That said, it looks like there is very little supporting research that the consumption of these types of supplements actually aid in weight loss. You are probably better off just doing the keto/low carb diet proper if you are looking to getting into ketosis. Though it looks like you already have them, so it wouldn't hurt to try them and see if they work. Good Luck!

Nutrisystem after weight loss surgery?
2-Liter replied to Lexigurl82's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
All bodies react differently but Keto works for me not only physically but mentally, I don't feel lethargic like I once did. Do a little research and add yourself to several Keto Facebook Recipe Groups so that once you Break the addiction to Carbs you will have meals that you enjoy. I would take measurements and weigh and then commit to trying it for 90 days. You have nothing to lose but Weight. Good Luck -
Nutrisystem after weight loss surgery?
Lexigurl82 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi guys, I had my gastric sleeve surgery in December 2015. I have lost 116 pounds, however I have about 30-40 more pounds to lose. The visceral fat around my belly is extremely annoying and hard to get rid of as as well. Someone suggested Nutrisystem to help shock my body and trigger weight loss. For my veteran weight loss surgery peoples, have any of you tried anything like keto, nutrisystem, weight watchers after your surgery?- 6 replies

Try your best to stick with fresh food- and ask for no sugar in sauces at restaurants. There is a HUGE diet culture here, dont be fooled by labels that say low carb or keto- check the numbers on the back of boxes/package for sure if you do chose to eat any packaged foods. -

I know ill get a ton of mixed opionons on this but whats your opinion of low carbing?
Wendydarling19 replied to Wendydarling19's topic in Food and Nutrition
I too am a bandster. I would really like to see my first short term goal of 25 lbs down by the end of March...which is another 6 lbs away. I don't think thats too much to ask for. Yes I weigh and measure but I dont trust measuring as an accurate way since you can never measure EXACTLY the same place you did before. I have always been dependant on the numbers because when I lose it seems to show, for some people it doesnt. We will see how it goes when I start exercising though. My opinion may change. As of now, I just did a keto-stick and I am on the borderline of moderate and heavy ketosis...woohoooooo!! To me that is exciting to see! Now I know I am burning fat and not muscle : ) hoping to see those 6 lbs melt off! I have always wanted to stick to low-carb for longer but felt so darn hungry. Now with the band I dont have to worry about the hunger : ) awesome! -
Thank you guys for the input. I read that doing Keto you have to not eat as much protein because it will counter act the Keto and make you gain? Has anyone else heard that? Also, what the hell are “Micros and macros” and why do you need to track those?

Would I be right in thinking your nutritionalist is recommending a keto like diet? They are big on no root vegetables & no corn, peas because of their naturally high sugar content. (Potatoes are often a no because they are considered a starch.) I regularly ate carrot & sugar snap peas. I threw frozen corn & peas into soups, mince dishes, some slow cooked dishes, omelettes, etc, I usually just microwave my vegetables with a splash of water & a dab of butter but also will stir fry & occasionally roast (especially cauliflower with a little hummus & zataar to serve). I love vegetables & enjoy them best simply with salt & pepper but don’t be afraid to try herbs & spices. The only vegetables I don’t eat is potato, sweet potato & pumpkin (they tend to sit heavily) except a very small piece (bite or two) with a roast dinner. My thoughts were & are vegetables are vegetables (except potato). They are highly nutritious (all those vitamins, minerals & fibre) so a valuable addition to our food choices. And the little we eat, especially in the first months will have minimal impact on your calorie intake & weight loss. I mean 1/4 cup peas is 30 calories if you can eat that much. Plus the ‘sweet’ vegetables are naturally sweet so they don’t count towards your sugar intake. Certainly didn’t affect my weight loss or maintenance. I say eat your vegetables, just watch portion size & what you serve or add to them. Like no honey glazed carrots, sour cream or cheese sauces at least for a while.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful
canadianpopcycle replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Well...here goes... My husband knows....and a coworker (inadvertently) because they saw me in the hospital. I do not plan on telling anyone else currently. Perhaps in the future I will be more open about it. So the question becomes why.... A small preamble: Diet, obesity, food, exercise etc has been a really big interest of mine for years. I have spent so much time researching so many things when it comes to this topic. I feel I am reasonably well versed in this topic. The problem is...most people are not. Many people are still knee deep in the billion dollar diet industry that will argue about Keto, CICO, Southbeach, Atkins etc etc. Many people also believe that you can control your own weight...and if you are over the amount you should weigh, it is your fault. Many people don't think about the factories that make "food". Many people don't think about so many things that so many people deal with. Lots of people think having surgery is cheating. My obesity is still very much tangled up in emotionally abusive things from childhood. The very last thing that I want to do is have a conversation about that with people I don't know, or only know professionally. This has been a long hard road to get here, but I don't need to explain myself to anyone. Did it occur to you that maybe people shouldn't be commenting on people's bodies? Why would it be my place to ask someone about their weight? There are going to be many people that don't agree with surgery for whatever reason....frankly, it's not my job to enlighten people on what they should do with their lives. If someone wants to know the 'secret', then they can do the research and figure out what is best for them and their health issues. I hate to tell you this....but the surgery stigma is alive because of the rhetoric of the billion dollar diet industry is alive and well in most people. The stigma isn't alive because a few people 'lied' about having surgery. I also really hate the explanation: If you needed surgery because you broke your leg, you wouldn't be hiding that from anyone! But really...medical ailments and treatments can be embarrassing and private or shameful. If I needed a colostomy bag, I wouldn't put out a newsletter about it. Jesus. -
My stall broke and I'm down 2.2 lb. this week. It must have been the pickles lol They always cause me to gain water weight for a couple of days. Causes a lot of weight fluctuation in the past and present. I've really been craving them or even a swig of pickle juice. I read it is common to crave salty things when our carbs are low. I eat a balanced diet, not keto but because my calories are low at the moment, so therefore, so are the carbs. I am rooting for all those on a stall as I await my next one... Not many things are certain in life but stalls are inevitable for me. Interesting read here: "High carbohydrate consumption has caused your body to retain water and salt up until now. When you eliminate carbohydrates from the diet, you begin to expel pounds of water" https://www.theartofketo.com/crave-salt-on-keto/

Intermittent Fasting

Hi all!!! Im due to be sleeved on 8-21-17. Im excited and a lil nervous but am anticipating the out come. I just wanted to jump in on the IF...It was one of the the methods I used along with the Keto lifestyle and it worked very well. But then I developed heel spurs and had to have foot surgery and was in bandages and a cam boot for a while and was knocked out Ketosis. But it really works if your disciplined. I am considering the Ketogenic lifestyle along with IF again after surgery when im fully healed. I think it's great for those who hit a plateau in losing. mybariatricjourney -
2.5 years post sleeve and major struggles
SteveT74 replied to EmilyJune's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Honestly, get a different nut. This is lousy advice since it relies on eating processed crap bars loaded with chemicals 4 times a day as meal substitutes. While you may lose some weight in the short term, her recommendation will cause you to have insulin spikes which screw up your metabolism and cause you to gain weight in the long term. You need to get on a lifestyle plan you can live with long term and you are already getting the exercise up. I like the keto lifestyle personally, but it's not for everyone. Nevertheless, every major diet/lifestyle plan and common sense suggests you should be cutting out all processed foods, sugar foods and anything that even remote sounds like it was developed in laboratory in favor of a clean, whole foods type diet. Protein drinks and protein bars are ok if you can only eat 500 calories a day and had to hit your protein goals. It's not ok 2.5 years post op when you can get most of your nutritional needs from the food you eat. Anyway, I think you know what you need to do and you're now doing it!!
