  1. So I have been doing a lot of research and food and drink elimination. Also portion sizes. I have taken those down to 1 1/2 ounces. Very careful to follow the 30/30 rule. It is definitely not as bad as it was last week but the diarrhea and horrible bubbling in my stomach is a constant melody, with pretty painful lower abdomen gas pain. I have discovered that semi solid foods like yogurt, pretty thick protein shakes, cottage cheese seems to stay inside longer. I found this interesting article from a couple of Dr’s from a medical website, Gastroentonolgy and Hepatology, Millennium Medical Publishing. It had a lot about uncommon sleeve problems in the early stages. This is the snippet I found interesting. “A recent prospective study suggested that dumping syndrome also occurs after VSG. It is hypothesized that VSG increases gastric mobility due to increased intraluminal pressure within the remnant stomach, ultimately causing rapid emptying to occur in addition to the know restrictive properties of this procedure.” well…. Ah…. That might be it, it might not lol. I took a cancellation appointment for the gastroenterologist I see her next Thursday. That seems a million years away. I can tell I was way more upbeat at the beginning of this post now I can tell I’m getting kinda worn down by the constant worry about running to the bathroom then having to get in the shower and wear a diaper!!!!!!! Thanks again to everyone who’s commented it has been very helpful and encouraging.

I’m 4 months after gastric bypass

I'm in DBT therapy to help change my relationship with food. It's a behavior change method that gives strategies to deal with emotions and practice mindfulness. I think it's helping. I talk mainly about my relationship with food and emotional eating in therapy and I do reading and practice certain steps and techniques throughout the week. I definitely won't hurt to start talking about your relationship with food in therapy.

    I need cofffeeeee NOW!

I was asked if I wanted coffee in the hospital as well. And I have been drinking the caffe latte shakes (which have caffeine) every morning ever since like one week post op.

    October surgery friends??

My surgeon switched me to RNY gastric bypass last minute so I'm no longer part of the sleeve crew. I'm 6 days out and the first couple of days were tough because Tylenol just wasn't doing it. Luckily, I remembered I had a few stronger painkillers from a previous procedure and that helped so much. I've started craving solid food just a bit because I've been on a liquid diet for two weeks now. I keep finding things to do to distract myself from those thoughts.
  5. Thank you so much! I went thru the first couple of weeks with no issues so now feeling the nerves sort of had me worried but I appreciate the information.

    I need cofffeeeee NOW!

My surgeon was one of those who said never again. I laughed in his face. But I did go off caffeine (and sugar and carbonated beverages) during pre-op. I had a cup of coffee last week (would have been week 4 for me post-op) and found it spiked my appetite, which is NOT what I need to happen... so no más coffee. I haven't tried decaf yet. I have a coffee shop meeting tomorrow, I'll try decaf.

ProCare Health One A Day Vitamin

Well I have my appointment tomorrow and I got labs last week so I guess we will see if my iron is low. I have been on this vitamin for two months and I’ve been taking it with my protein shake every morning. Oops. Before that I was fine but I was taking a two a day so I got the iron from the evening one I bet.
  8. Excedrine migraine can actually cause rebound headaches if you take it too often (caffeine withdrawal). Recommend you go to a good neurologist who specializes in Migraines. I go to Georgetown University’s Headache Center and they do treatments nowhere else did. Currently I do a Vyepti infusion every three months and it does wonders. I take Relpax when I do get a migraine. Good luck!

    October surgery friends??

Nice I am on week 2. I have my post op tomorrow hoping everything goes well. I am having trouble with the water intakes so that is the only thing that is worrying me. My incision look ok except I have 1 that bleeds a little everyday after I shower.
  10. Hello, I am new to the group but I had gastric sleeve surgery on 9/30 and was told I could start soft foods 3 days ago and I did try to but I was afraid I would rip my staples so I sort of stopped and went back to doing shakes. I do try to eat a few bites of mash potatoes but get full instantly. I am so scared of causing a leak and not sure if the way I am feeling it normal. Im not in pain although I do get the occasional nerve pinches and twinge here and there. Anyone else like this?

    Starting actual foods

The way the PA in my surgeon's office put it is that you have to experiment and find what works for you. There are some things that your body will struggle with for no apparent reason. The first solid food I ate was tuna fish with some Greek yogurt and a little bit of salt/pepper. You eat slowly, in small bites with great chewing and wait to see what happens. I know this sounds weird, but I know I am generally okay with a food if I can burp. When a food doesn't work for me, it feels like there is a manhole cover over my stomach and the food feels like it backs up on me until I vomit. But if I am burping, then air is moving through the system and things will be okay. You will find there are foods that you tolerate that you don't enjoy (chewing watermelon down to a pulp is a deeply unpleasant experience). You will find some foods go down easy (for me, tuna fish, sauteed spinach and/or ground beef all go down fairly easily). You will find some foods that you can handle, but your stomach lets you know that it doesn't enjoy breaking them down (for me, grilled chicken, white rice). The minute that your stomach indicates that it is full or it is having trouble, put down your fork and stop. It's not worth pushing it. Go into this with the attitude of "I am going to try this, I am going to listen to my stomach, I am going to do the big three [slow, small, & chewed] and we will see what happens." Solid food is not something to be scared of.

    Hungry

I woke from my surgery hungry and it went on for weeks and I wanted to cry. But please know this.....I found that the stomach is very sensitive to your own stomach acid after surgery and that taking the omeprazole prescription usually given is imperative. It isn't just for treating the heart burn you may or may not get, but it reduces stomach acid levels to allow for the healing of the sutures of your stomach pouch to heal and to heal any ulcers that may develop. I skipped taking this prescription omeprazole because I had no heartburn, I didn't see the need for it. After reading a post from someone with the same burning hunger experience, I took her advice and started taking the omeprazole and was amazed. I was like.. I'll be damned...That burning hunger I felt day in and day out was from stomach acid. It truly made me feel I like I was starving. After a week or so, no more burning hunger.

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

Weight loss has basically stopped. I’d like to get to 150 but totally thrilled where I am. Wondering if this is the end of the losing since it’s been about 6 weeks.
  14. My answers: A1 -- Yes, you'll be fine and the meds will work. A2 -- Buy some liquid Tylenol prior to surgery to keep around for a few weeks until you feel OK taking tablets. B1 -- Yes, but you may want to invest in a good, sturdy cane. Also helps when going from seated to standing (like the toilet). B2 -- That is going to be tough. If you have a recliner, you may want to sleep in it for a few days. B3 -- In the hospital, I could not wipe. It wasn't until later in the first week that I could do that on my own. B4 -- I had surgery on a Monday and I think I showered on Thursday or Friday. Don't scrub your belly/scars. Doc's office told me to soap up my chest and let the water/soap run down the belly. C1 -- I have a desk job and by the end of week 2, I was fully back, both physically and mentally. C2 -- I probably would not have tried biking until at least a month out. And I would have been terrified of falling off my bike and landing on my stomach.
  15. Good luck to all that are waiting for approvals. I was told it could take 7-15days for a response from the insurance company. I rush an open every email that comes in phone lol even though they just sent me the message Friday evening telling how long it can be and it’s only Tuesday 🤣. Very nervous not about the surgery but about the approval ready to get the 2 weeks of liquid deliciousness over 😂🤥

    October surgery friends??

How is my October sleeve crew doing? I'm recovering well. Tomorrow I'll hit the one week mark. The only pain I have is incision pain at the stomach extraction point. Hit 64oz yesterday, so I'm proud of that! It's also looking like I may be under 300 at my first post op appointment on Friday. Still on clears until then and then I'll move to all liquids for two weeks.

    I need cofffeeeee NOW!

surgeons are all across the board on this. Some say you can never drink caffeinated beverages ever again. Some patients are drinking it before they even leave the hospital. Some surgeons have you wait a month - or three months - or six months. And some are OK with a limited amount - like one cup a day. Or some combo of the above (I could have decaf fairly shortly after surgery - maybe 3rd or 4th week? (it's been awhile for me). Then after six months, I could have ONE cup of caffeinated per day). SO....ask your surgeon. Opinions vary, and some might depend on your individual circumstances.
  19. So what Med School did your partner graduate from that informed him on how fast you should heal? Some of us are back at our normal activities in a week or so while others take months to get back. It really depends on a lot of things like your starting weight/BMI, your physical condition before surgery, your nutrition, the complications of the surgery, any other conditions you have etc, etc. Even totally healthy people after surgery have different healing rates.

    I need cofffeeeee NOW!

The Doctor is normally going to frown on coffee because, well, that is what Doctors do. I started having a shot of espresso in my morning protein shake about a week ago after 6 weeks post op and I really enjoy both the flavor change and the little caffeine buzz I missed in the morning. I don't drink any coffee after that, although prior to surgery I was a 5 or 6 cup a day guy. I think like anything, everything in moderation and when you are past a month or so when all the major wound healing is past, a cup of coffee is not going to hurt your recovery too much.

    June Surgeries

Hi all! I had my surgery 6/11, so, just over 4 months post op. I'm down 64 pounds so far and the difference is amazing. I've been doing before and after pics every month and am so pleased with my progress. I've officially shrunk through my whole back log of clothes that were too small in my closet and have had to venture out to do minimal shopping. I'm trying not to invest a lot in clothes right now because I know they won't fit in a few months. I second what ShoppGirl said - I have alarms set up on my phone at specific times that go off every day to remind me to eat. My plan has me eating 3 small meals and 2 snacks, so, just like ShoppGirl, I'm eating about every 3 hours as well. I had gotten to the point with shakes that I literally just can't drink them. They upset my stomach and are just kind of revolting by the end. I think it's because I was on them for 6 solid weeks between my pre-op and post-op diet. I have worked really hard to ensure I am getting 60-80g of protein a day without them and am able to do that consistently. How's everyone doing on vegetables? I feel like by the time I get through my protein I only have room for maybe a couple bites of any vegetables I may have on my plate. This makes me a little sad as I've always loved veggies. Just curious how everyone else was doing in this area.
  22. I'm 4 weeks post-op (- 2 days) and I'm dying for an iced Latte... How soon can I start having coffee again? Caffeine and all...

    No weight loss

Honestly - stay off the scale. The stall will pass, and they typically last 2 to 3 weeks. Mine only just broke, and fixating on the scale just feeds the frustration. What's going on with you is perfectly normal, and won't last. You'll begin losing again as soon as your body has adjusted to it's new radical changes. Leave the scale be, distract yourself, and weigh yourself again in a week's time.

    June Surgeries

Eating at a set time helps. I eat at 6, 12 and 6 with snacks at 9 and 3. This means I am eating something every three hours (protein shake counts as eating here). In the beginning I set alarms to remind me to eat.
