  1. I've been obsessed with this site and OH for the last week or so. And, I know that leaks are uncommon but I've also read about a few who have had them and one or two who are dealing with MAJOR stuff because of them not healing. My question is, how many of you who had leaks after surgery know the leaks were caused from being revised from another surgery? Ok, so there's more than one question, LOL. Second one is, those of you who had leaks that were not caused by damage done from the band or from whatever it was that you were revised from, were they the surgeons fault or was it something that just happened without a known cause? I am a smoker, and if I get approved for surgery I do plan on quitting beforehand. But, because of being a smoker for 17 years now, I have to cough from time to time and sometimes even have coughing fits if I have or am getting over a cold. I have a 6 year old so I'm constantly getting exposed to his little colds he brings home from school and usually end up sneezing and coughing alot and I'm freaking out over that happening right after surgery and winding up in a horrible situation. Basically, if someone who's never had any other WLS surgery does the VSG and follows the diet to a tee, they have pretty good odds that a leak won't happen right? I know alot depends on the surgeon. But, leaving the surgeon out of the equation. The one I'm looking at hasn't done a ton of VSG's but has been doing bypasses for several years and has been a general surgeon for many years and has had to do removal of parts of the stomach due to cancers and things. So, I'm hoping that if he's who my pcp refers me to, he's got an awesome handle on the whole thing. Anyway, just looking for leak experiences with the whole back story, no matter what they may be. And, I just want to say that I'm so glad you are on the other side of that experience!!! And if you are still going through it, I pray for your healing!! Thanks in advance and God Bless!! Krystal

    Ouch :-(

I have been banded for two years and three months and only have 8ccs in my band. Most of my fills have been between 1 and 2 ccs. Just got one yesterday for the first time in a year (that's a whole other story tho) I know what you mean about them hurting, my first two fills required multiple sticks and lots of digging. Only after being unsuccessful in getting the first one did we discover it was because my port had turned over. He could have dug for 6 years and got nothing. The second one was the same story! So now two port revision surgeries later I am happy to say that fills are no longer painful. I was in and out it 5 minutes yesterday! Good luck with you 6ccs, hope Santa gives you some restriction!
  3. I started therapy before I had my surgery, on my surgeon's recommendation...I am a revision person, meaning that I've had WLS before and VSG was my second surgery, and he recommended that I go through therapy for extra support....and it has helped....I use my therapy time to really self-examine how I managed to lose and regain 120 pounds in the past....and I'm still a work in progress

    Hello newbie here

Since having the lap band for 4years i had The most wt loss in the first year but I didn't have the correct support or Dr & I was cash paying. Why do I mention that? Because when u go through your insurance they make u go through a lot of hoops that seem ridiculous but now that I'm going through the hoops to get a revision to a sleeve and insurance require more dr appts and nutritional & dietician appt it keeps u accountable. I didn't have that when I paid cash and well I NEEDED THAT. I DIDNT KNOW HOW TO PREPARE FOR MYSELF but for my children and hubby I'm on top of it. I decided its time to put me n my health first so I believe the sleeve is right for me. I financially couldn't keep up with fills and unfills but my suggestion to you BANDSTERS. Strength train 5day AWEEK Measure your food ahead of time Think a week in advance Don't cheat urself MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF NO MATTER WHAT U HAVE TO DO WAKE UP EARLIER OR WORK OUT IN LIVING ROOM W WTS EVEN GET A PERSONAL TRAINER THEY KNOW HOW TO HELP U AND NOT BOSS U. MOST I ALL DONT GIVE UP✌️????????????
  5. Revision to bypass was one of the best decisions ever. My GERD is not gone but way better.
  6. Congrats and good luck! I had my band removed back in March and revised to the Bypass... Best damn thing I've done for myself in a very long time!

    Conversation with a lap band

Well, U will find great deal of people here with HORRIBLE experiences with the band on here. Mine wasnt at all horrible. or even bad. I am just saying with all the "under preparation" and my AMAZING surgeon been the best at the procedure but not the follow up ( so I seeked another one who helped) I still managed to to lose with the band but It was my own effort at the end of it. I am not a big fan of the mechanism of the band after experiencing the sleeve sensation. Everyone's experience is different, urs I'd consider way ugly than mine, Slipping and such complications aren't just great! Mine was just plateauing and having side effect of not able to consume healthier food, which most of ppl on this board find it the biggest reason for their revision. You are lucky about not having the hunger as your friend, I wasnt and may be more 100 people I know arent too:) I am not talking out of generally speaking , I am talking out of personal experiences sharing! from different continents:) so may be you were just unique. I can see the band is working too good for you aside from the slipping, Mine never had any complications and I had it for 8 years, all the doctors I had to consult for my sleeve had to thankfully praise for my surgeon. So If it is just a matter of slippage and you are just delighted that much with the band why not try fixing the slipping, I am no expert but I have heard people having another band after their slips. I can see how happy you are with it EVEN with the slipping thats why I am wondering why are you researching the sleeve? if I may just ask. The band for me should be stopped, many people wasted money on it and others suffers in such big deal of going crazy with their food and their feelings. I wasnt diagnosed with anything, but the port pain was such a huge pain in my left side that it reached my upper thigh, after the band was removed there is non of this terrible pain which was my friend day and night and especially after my work outs. I am considered a lap band success story by many doctors here, but they still agree that the work was almost mine at keeping the weight off and at losing the last 40-50 pounds. Dumping started with me since the band but it actually arises more after the sleeve after removing my gallbladder (turns out it was no good after the excess weight loss) so we had it removed at the day I had the sleeve. So my dumping showed at my band time with some diarrhea , after the sleeve it is more like, not feeling well for 5 mins or more if i had something not sugar high no, just something fat concentrated with some sugar. my surgeon told me the gallbladder is a big factor in this too.

    Conversation with a lap band

I am sorry I havent read all the conversation down under the main topics but I wanna add that once I had the sleeve, and had my band removed, lots of physical pain that no doctor has an explanation for, just vanished. My face look a lot better, I dont think it is not only about the weight loss but it is also related to that am able to eat healthy food now and stay full. With the band I was a good patient with no knowledge what so ever. I didnt research a lot like the sleeve, my doctor was one of the biggest surgeons here but he is not into the band and he didnt give me good guidelines about the band, he just pointed out that am not supposed to have anymore sugar in my diet ( eating or drinking) I lost good 70 pounds with band then 40 more on my own, the band wasnt working. I didnt know about the Water rule for the first 2 years and I still lost weight and when I knew about it when I plateaued I started losing again but come to think about it, I was never able to eat chicken meat or any dense food. I was stuck to Sushi and fish which is a bit boring and expensive. When I go crazy I can rely on sweets and Desserts which is not a good way to a healthy life. Now with the sleeve I sometimes hate my life for not being able to consume any ice cream or desserts but then when I fit into cloth and have that confidence I dont know where it came from .. I no longer hate that I cant eat sweets. Actually I think the band should be banned for good. It drives you crazy! for people who says they find their sweet spot they are just adapting the hungry feeling all the time. It drives u mentally to be unstable. it deprives your body of good nutrition. I swear my face now when I look at it , it is totally colorful but when I browse my band photos I find someone missing life from their face. I am lucky along with others who chose the sleeve, even with complications that may occur I am still more secured with the complication of being obese and others that may occur ( mentally & physically) from the band. The band is good for someone who is looking t lose 50 pounds at most! Good chat u had there and I hope this lap band patient can find another insurance to do her revision.

    Band to sleeve

I’m Week 4 after my band to sleeve revision and am on soft foods. I can eat a whole egg and one toast. I don’t feel full afterward but stop myself from eating as I don’t want to eat too much. Should I feel full when eating an egg and one toast? Is this normal?
  10. I've read probably 100 posts...which have all been amazingly helpful here. Every time I tell myself I'm going with the sleeve, I read the next post and believe full heartedly I should go with the bypass??? I know this is an ever-popular question but I am feeling so confused. I don't currently have GERD but is sounds horrible. I also don't like the idea of "dumping". I want to lose 150 pounds. I am 100% committed and ready for surgery which will probably be this November or early December. I want to make the best, most informed decision for myself. I don't want a revision down the line...not that anyone does. One question I have is does artificial sugar/sweeteners cause dumping with the bypass? I'm 45, 298.6 pounds today. Just got approved yesterday and am super excited---------just confused LOL. Wishing all the PALS here the best!

    Moderate to severe reflux

No. I am not symptomatic. In the past year I recall discomfort once and that was after drinking several mimosas that were mostly orange juice on one day during the summer. I am seeing my doctor on Monday and am scheduled for lap band revision to sleeve on Tuesday December 29. I'm praying for no surprises. I reached out to my surgeon after seeing my results and now she wants to see me.

    Denial

They want people to jump through the hoops.. I know someone that had a similar problem (she’s in the process of getting revision to the sleeve) her doctor had to write a letter of necessity and submit documentation from the time she got it until today. There are a lot of people coming back from lap band having similar issues as yours...acid reflux and tolerance to certain foods. I hope you get a resolution... acid reflux is not fun! Why Lapband? Why Not The Sleeve?

there are virtually no dumping with the sleeve and its extremly rare, no malabsorb with the sleeve, no puking, no limit of size food to a point that one eats, or great restriction. Yer band is in there just as long as somone who started at 400 pounds. If you had to have it remove, and didnt want weight gain again you would still have to do a revision surgery. You still have the same odds of typical LB problems popping up as any of the others with more weight to lose. JMO, but I think you have subjected yourself to the same issues you didnt want t have, down the road. JMO, no offense intended. Sandy

    Band to sleeve?

I would look for a surgeon who has a better track record. I lost over 150# in 14 months after revising from band. I have been maintaining for over 3 years...
  15. I wish I was bold enough to ask (not that any doctor would be forthcoming about this information) for the percentage of each type of procedure the surgeon performs. Also, how many revisions has s/he done in which s/he was the original surgeon? I was a little taken aback by Matt's statements about doctors who tend to do the surgery of THEIR preference without a patient's best interests in mind. I can believe this, but it's nevertheless shocking. Doctors are often no different from the rest of us when it comes to shady motives. When the information out there is overwhelmingly dubious, I'd be a little suspicious if a doctor paints a well-documented outcome a different color. I think it's still hard for those of us who've had bypasses to sit clamly* by when someone opts for a sleeve when they actually have a choice. As I mentioned before, our forum friend @macadamia had no choice. He was missing key parts of his digestive system because of his Crohn's disease (something he already shared with everyone; I'd never pass on what wasn't already shared by Andy first...). Anyway, @macadamia had no choice. A sleeve was all he could have. It's just hard to reason how permanently removing a body part could be considered less radical than merely repurposing what's already anatomically there. *I noticed this typo and thought about correcting it, but I found the typo amusing so I left it as-is. I'm currently picturing myself sitting clamly.

Revision Of My Sleeve Plication To Vsg

After reading the other person's post I was really scared. Then I thought who pays $10,000 for a VSG. Is this really true? Anyhow, after saying a prayer I made the decision to continue on with my revision since my deposit was made, my flight booked and my mind made up. I headed out one day early before the surgery on January 5th to Juarez Mexico at the Star Medica Hospital to have my revision from Plication to Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. I went alone by the way, crazy thing to do. On my first day I almost wanted to cancel everything because I became scared and depressed. I took my magicjack with me and talk to my family to keep me strong. Now I am so happy I had my surgery. The doctors and staff were amazing. When I woke up from surgery I wasn't even throwing up or feeling horrible pain. There was some pain from the incision and some dizziness, but it was managable. The Plication was a completely different recovery. I vomitted and was so ill after awaken from surgery. I was horribly sick for 2 weeks and was not able to stand on my feet for long. That time my flight back home was like a nightmare in my memory. With the VSG my travel back home last night was okay. I got wheelchair service and the 6hours flight was somewhat tiring but okay. It is now 4days after my surgery and I am so excited to start my second weight loss journey: thanks to Belite weight and Dr. Jose Rodriguez. Not forgetting to thank my weightloss friends for their words of advice and encouragement. God Bless Us All.

The Yellow Brick Road to Weight Loss

Welcome!!! I always love to see some new posters around, as our family grows we get ever tighter and tighter here I am also a revision from band to sleeve. If I had to go over it again, I never would have even given the band a second thought to be perfectly honest. It is much too easy to cheat and way to hard to lose with it. I never found the elusive "sweet spot" that so many rave about and ended up feeling defeated and like a total failure. Ever since being sleeved, and going in this with a whole different view than when I was banded, I know I'll be successful in the end! I'm not losing as fast as many here, but I Celebrate every pound and am enjoying the differences already! I'm fitting clothes I haven't fitted in since I was first banded, and now those same clothes are starting to fit a little loose!!! Yeah!!! Very soon I will be wearing clothes even smaller and I'm very close to my "Less than my lowest band weight" goal!! Enjoy your time here. Everyone is always very helpful and supportive. You will likely learn more here from those of us who are already sleeved, and many others here who are at goal, than you will from your own Doctor! That is because we are the ones going through the real experience. However, it is always best to follow your Surgeons advice if you are ever conflicted. All the best to you, and I believe you will do excellent!! I love my sleeve!!!
  18. I had my band removed and revision to the sleeve on 3/13/14. I have been feeling great. Mt week post op appt is tomorrow. I have not weighed myself. You are not hungry at all. I have trouble getting all my protein in cause after I drink do much I am full.

Connection W/ Past And Weight Problems?

PKB: An excellent thread...because the more we understand about ourselves and identify the core issues behind the self loathing and anger directed inward the more opportunity to change one's thinking to a healthier and more accurate perspective. We cannot change our history...but we can accept that those events, however hurtful or harmful did happen. And then we can begin the process of revising our automatic thoughts and beliefs into a healthier and more accurate perspective. We can move beyond the negative and become successful with getting our minds and bodies into a healthier condition. I'm excited that you took the initiative to realize that you wanted and/or needed to change the direction of your life...kudos to you for taking the steps to become your catalyst for positive change! Best wishes...
  20. Likely you will need to go the an RNY gastric bypass but it really does depend on your current health situation. Most centers of excellence are getting further and further away from the lapband. There are more complications that require a revision to bypass with that surgery. If you suffer from reflux at all, bypass is the way to go. It is the gold standard for weight loss surgery and is know for achieving more weight loss overall. If you don't suffer from reflux/Gerd then the sleeve might be the right solution for you however I would definitely ask questions about how much weight you would likely lose with the sleeve. I would suggest taking a class (they are free) at your local bariatric center of excellence. Best of luck to you!

This is my hold up at the moment for my revision. The first time around I seen one in office and now they don’t have him and told me to go and find one. I seen someone here also had a therapist, so I’m going to contact my doctor tomorrow to see if they would be okay with her helping out. Good luck everyone! We will get through this just fine!
  22. This is my standard reply when this question pops up every couple of days. I won't try to sway anyone one way or another, but I'll give you my reasons for choosing VSG over RNY for my revision from the band. You can also check out the revision, failure, and food issue forums on here to get an idea of some long term RNY patients. For me, it was never an option. The cons outweighed the pros. The VSG was my 2nd, and final WLS. I could have easily had RNY, but I fought to have VSG as my revision from the band. Some factors I considered in deciding on VSG. The pouch that RNY offers is similar to the pouch with the band. Least to say, a pouch sucks, I love having a normal tummy, just less capacity and still fully functioning. 1) No blind stomach left behind that can be difficult to scope yet can still get ulcers and cancer. 2) 2 years max on calorie/carb/sugar malabsorption, but a lifetime of vitamin/nutrient malabsorption. This process is called adaptation, and it happens with intestinal bypass surgeries. 3) I had a pouch with the band, and it sucked. I'm pretty fond of my pyloric valve and the sleeve let me keep it. I love having a normal functioning stomach, just smaller in capacity. 4) Regain stats and #of RNY patients seeking revision truly scared the poop out of me 5) I have too many friends in real life that struggle with Vitamin deficiencies post-RNY, and most of them either never got to goal, or have gained back a significant amount of their weight. 6) The long term complications with RNY were too numerous for my comfort level. Pouch or stoma dilation, strictures, vitamin/nutrient deficiencies, ulcers, 7) I researched gastrectomies that had been performed for stomach cancer and ulcer patients, and found comfort in the long term results and minimal complications of patients that had lost most or all of their stomachs had dealt with over several years. 8) I was a volume eater, and knew a restrictive only procedure would work for me. That was my thought process when I got the band, and I thought I could beat the odds on complications. Sadly, the band only lasted 8 months before I had to revise. 9) I did not want to have food or medication restrictions. I chose WLS to have a "normal" life, and I think it's normal to eat a couple of Cookies. With RNY, I wasn't willing to go through the possibility of dumping if I wanted to have a couple of cookies, or a slice of cake on occasion. The big scare for me is medication restrictions for life. NSAIDS and steroids are a NO GO for life with a RNY pouch. I realize that I may never be diagnosed with a condition or disease that requires steroid use, but it is possible. I want the best long term results with the least amount of complications. Malabsorption is not anything to play with in my mind, and I was not willing to take that risk. I lost all my weight in my ticker with the exception of 7lbs with the sleeve, and I did it in 10.5 months. The 115lbs fell off the first 6.5 months, and then the rest I lost as I was getting into maintenance over another 4 months.. It's been a fabulous journey, and I'm easily maintaining with zero issues for nearly a year at this point. I want to add that every WLS regardless of your choice will require discipline. Only a percentage of RNY patients dump on sugar/fat, pouches and stomas stretch, then you have the medication restrictions. I'm not trying to convince you, but these were my concerns when I knew I had to revise from the band. I started at 263 the day of my revision and today I weigh 127lbs. I bounce on the scale 125-130lbs any given week, and I couldn't be more ecstatic! Best wishes in your research! P.S. I wrote this before pregnancy. And, just as an update, I'm 8 months pregnant and thriving. I have zero issues consuming enough calories/protein/carbs to support my body and another developing human. My labs have remained stellar throughout the pregnancy, and life is pretty good. I am over 2 years out at this point, and couldn't be happier with my decision to have VSG over RNY for my revision. It's been an amazing journey. P.S.S. Since the pregnancy, I have been diagnosed with a genetic clotting disorder and the ONLY treatment (zero cure) is a daily aspirin therapy. With VSG, this treatment is possible, if I would have gone with RNY my doctors (surgeon, 2 ob's, PCM) are unsure how this condition would have been treated especially during the pregnancy. Grant it, I only take a baby aspirin every day of my life, but it is an NSAID. Least to say, when my high risk ob found out I had a partial gastrectomy and NOT RNY, he was elated because there really is zero other option for treatment at this point, and the aspirin therapy is working well with my platelets and if all goes as planned, I will be able to have an epidural for my c-section instead of having general anesthesia. Maybe a small issue to some, but being awake for the birth of my daughter is top priority for me.
  23. Hi everyone! ! Well last October I tried to get my band to sleeve revision. The surgeon was able to take out the band but was not able to revise me to a sleeve because of all the damage the band had done to my stomach. So my surgery is scheduled for July 8th and I'm so excited!!! it will be 9 months from when I had my band taken out and hopefully my stomach has healed enough for my surgeon to do the sleeve!!wish me luck♥
  24. I think it depends on your diet. If you track, are you meeting 100% of your vitamins and minerals from your diet alone? I always come up short on certain vitamins through my diet so even after years of having VSG (Before RNY revision), I took a multivitamin, sometimes calcium chews.

The process to get to surgery

I agree and mine is a revision from a band so I would have hoped it would go quicker. Saw my surgeon on 18 Sept. He suggested a revision to RNY and I was given all the info and costings. Did some research , discussed it with hubby and decided I want to go ahead so called his office a week later to ask what the process was. Apparently I have to see the surgeon again before I can be given a date, I was hoping that I would at least be given a provisional date as I like to be organised and know whats what. Seeing him on 29th Oct and the NUT a day later. Did manage to get a referral for the preop consult and that Dr had a cancellation so got in on the same day. That was a bit weird, I was expecting the ECG but hadn't been warned he would need to look at my armpit! So hoping that I get a date soon.
