I had my lap band placed over 10 years (when I was 57) and had left shoulder pain immediately after surgery. My clueless surgeon didn't know why. I had all the fill removed a year later. I got the left shoulder pain when I was eating and knew it was my stop signal. I switched to another surgeon who said the band can irritate the phrentic nerve and that could be the cause so I thought getting it removed would solve that problem. I have always hated the band for a variety of issues but getting stuck was the biggest. So fast forward to 16 days ago when I got it removed. I woke up with left shoulder pain and they said it was gas, etc. and it did improve until about 6 days ago when it got worse and is more of less constant. My surgeon (different from the first two) doesn't know why and said I should see a gastro, orthopedic or PCP. I also have developed a burning, greasy feeling in my throat that I didn't have prior to the removal. I have been on Nexium for many years. My surgeon said everything looked fine, no erosion, no hiatal hernia, as he also did an endoscopy. Has anyone had either of these problems and if so how were they resolved, if they were? Thank you.

Support and honesty needed

After suffering for 12 years with a horrible band experience, I was sleeved in May 2018. I started the process in Jan 2018. By the time my May 17th surgery/revision date came, I’d struggled down to a 30 BMI. My husb of not quite 2 years kept asking if I really needed the revision. Regularly suggested maybe they should just remove the band and get out. He never knew me at 260lbs. He never saw me bigger than the 209 I blossomed to after our marriage (so I knew his questions were innocent in nature). Your husband sounds a bit different. It’s understandable. It’s a frightening time for him. He’s about to have his life change too. The woman he’s married to is about to transform. You will! Completely and totally. In so many ways. He knows this. Can you imagine how he feels? Don’t let him shake you, though. Have empathy but keep YOUR compass straight! As far as age goes, i’m 54 now. I was almost at the mid-point of 53 when I had surgery. It’s been a breeze. Age means nothing. Your lower BMI will be helpful. I was at goal quickly. I am well below what I ever imagined. Even with a 3.8 pound holiday gain, i’m Right in the middle of the recommended weight for my height. My surgeon said if I wanted to gain a few more he’s fine with it. If I want to maintain this, perfect. He doesn’t recommend losing anymore. Think about that!!! It has been 20 years since a doctor told me they don’t recommend I lose another pound! THIS COULD SO EASILY BE YOU IN SEVERAL MONTHS! ❤️👍🏻🤷🏼♀️ -
No band, no revision, no problem...(not really)
general_antiope posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I was denied twice to have my sleeve surgery after my band was removed in June due to complications/slippage. My surgeon was on the phone with the insurance surgeon and apparently they were arguing - I already hit the lifetime limit of one surgery 13 years ago, and technically had TWO surgeries (removal) that were paid for and they wouldn't revise me. Band out. 25 lbs immediately gained. Wow, WOW it felt SO GOOD to eat and not have things stuck. it was like a physical addiction to chew and swallow without puking. But, holy crap I'm gaining. I've slowed down finally, am walking every day but not losing. Still a battle. My sleep apnea is back, so I'm about to go get evaluated for a CPAP. I'm up 2 sizes, where I never thought I would be again. I'm up 60 lbs from my lowest with the band. Not really a success story anymore. I'm hanging on for dear life because there is one more chance for the sleeve. I spoke to my husband and in November I'm going to enroll in my own healthcare through my employer. Praying to god nothing bad happens...I have a new local doctor who I've already consulted with, and his surgical coordinator, and they're getting me in the first week of November as a new patient so that I will satisfy the three months of medical supervision, and that as of Jan 1 we can schedule surgery for Feb or March as long as I've lost weight. I'm struggling now, but practicing by logging every day, eating slow when I can remember. Every week I'm getting better at avoiding triggers, being consistent, but my late day eating ruins the entire day of doing well. My goal is to get my sh!t under control - better control - so that the habits are there and the sleeve just accelerates it. I am at the mercy of my hunger some days, it is so frustrating. But I am having "good" days here and there, changes in attitude and understanding. Just needed to talk. I feel like November is forever away and January doesn't exist...love reading all of your stories!! Keeping me going. -

Revision with a toddler? Anyone dare to do that?
VSG Tommy B replied to Poorehouse's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did it in June with a 16 month old who weighed 30+ pounds at the time. I sat on the floor as much as possible so he could come to me and changed him on the floor. My partner was very helpful and did most of the work. I was lucky enough that I healed quickly and was able to pick him up for short periods of time after only 2 weeks. It was 4 weeks until I could hold him as much as I used to. The biggest problem I had was avoiding his accidentally hitting my incisions. If you have the help and can stick to the restrictions, do it. Everyone talks about how much better the sleeve is than the band. Before I had the revision, I knew it would be better, but thought they were exaggerating (sp?). They weren't. It is a MAJOR difference that has changed my life and helped me reach my goal in just 3 months. -
Has anyone in this group had a revision from band or gastric sleeve? Gastric sleeve patient already gaining weight? Wrong choice?

Does anyone else feel like this is going slower than you thought?

OOH WEE SWEETIE I THOUGHT I HAD IT BAD. YOU'VE GOT TO BE WRONG. 25 POUNDS IN 3 MONTHS? YOU DIDN'T START OUT AS HEAVY AS MOST OF US BUT DANG! I'M WITH YOU THOUGH. I'M 8 WEEKS OUT YESTERDAY. I HAD AT LEAST 3 WEEKS WHEN I GAINED. GAINED AND I WAS EATING LIKE 500 - 700 CALORIES!!! THEN I WOULD HAVE MAYBE A 3 LB LOST. THANK YOU JESUS! LAST WEEK I LOST OUNCES MAYBE 6. THEN TODAY I FINALLY MADE IT OUT OF THE 250'S AND WAS 248.2. PRAISE THE LORD!!! IT'S DEFINITELY A ROLLER COASTER RIDE. NOW THIS IS WHAT MY DOCTOR SAID: I HAD A LAPBAND IN 2008 THAT DIDN'T WORK - HE SAID MOST REVISIONS ARE SLOWER (I WAS HOPING MINE WOULDN'T BE LOL). SAID EVERYBODY'S DIFFERENT SO DON'T COMPARE (YEA RIGHT LOL), DON'T GET ON THE scale MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK BECAUSE YOU GO UP & DOWN. NOW I KNOW THAT IN MY MIND BUT THE REST OF ME IS SAYING (YEA RIGHT - AGAIN HOW ON LESS THAT 1000 CALORIES A DAY - WHICH CAUSES ME TO GET ON THE SCALE AT LEAST 2X A WK). THEN I THINK ABOUT SOMETHING AN OVER 100 POUND LOSER BYPASS LADY ON HERE SAID. I ASKED HER WHAT WAS THE SECRET. SHE SAID JUST KEEP WORKING THE PROGRAM DON'T BE OVERLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SCALE. IT'S GOT TO MOVE IF YOU KEEP WORKING THE PROGRAM. SHE HADN'T LOST MORE THAN 2 MAYBE 3 POUNDS A WEEK, BUT 2 X 52 = 104 IN 1 YEAR. I TELL YOU I LOVE THIS BARIATRIC PAL SITE AND ALL THE PEOPLE. IT & THEY ARE SO HELPFUL. SORRY IF IT SEEMS I'M RAMBLING, BUT IT CAN GET VERY FRUSTRATING AT TIMES, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE DOING YOU PART. I'M 62 YEARS OLD & USUALLY OLDER PEOPLE CAN LOSE A LITTLE SLOWER. I'M JUST BEGINNING TO WORK OUT AGAIN NOW. I'M SURE THAT WILL HELP. SO MY SISTER, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND KEEP SMILING BECAUSE GUESS WHAT EVEN AT THE PACE YOU'RE GOING IN ONE YEAR; YOU'LL BE POSTING A 100 POUND LOST. 25 POUNDS IN 3 MONTHS. 3 MONTHS TIMES 4 EQUALS A YEAR. YOU GO YOU SOON TO BE 100 POUND LOSER. YOU GO GIRL!! HAY I JUST NOTICED; YOU ONLY WANTED TO LOSE 90 HAHAHA!! DENISE -

Last Leg of the Journey
catwoman7 replied to angeliquita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you couldn't eat as much in the beginning because your stomach was swollen from the surgery. You can still lose weight with your stomach its current size - I'm still losing weight and I'm 19 months out. As you've found it, it just slows down quite a bit. I doubt you'd be able to find a surgeon willing to do a revision at six months out, anyway. It's never a good idea to compare yourself to others (like your aunt is trying to do with you). People lose at all different rates due to a variety of factors - age, gender, starting weight, metabolism, whether or not they lost a lot of weight pre-surgery, how much muscle mass they have, etc. And our ideal weights are all individual as well - depending on age, gender, bone density, how much muscle mass we have, frame size, etc. I weigh 150 lbs - near the top of the normal BMI range for my height, but I'm so bony my ribs show. My doctor said I can quit losing weight any time... Are you sticking to your plan and weighing/measuring and logging everything you eat? If not, do it. If you are, then just have patience. Your body may not be done losing weight yet. -
diet options & weight gain after lap-band
kah1213 replied to HBMcKnight's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Are you thinking about a revision? I hope you're feeling better -
I'm not sure if that's normal or not. I've read many different threads where people have had their ports in various places. My port is on my right side. I just had a port revision done when I had my lap band revisioned. I now have what's called a low profile port. I had lost so much weight that my original port was pretty noticeable.

I don't have a revision, but the sleeve is very effective. I'm so glad I went ahead with this surgery. You can lose however many pounds you want to.

New here and need some advice
afdonn replied to new_beginnings_'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the same problems with the band. It was either too tight and I could barely eat, or too loose to be effective. I could eat junk and sweets no problem, but lean protein or veggies, forget it. I felt like a big failure, and I was sure I was the only one. I was even afraid to go to my doctor. Long story short, I revised to the sleeve in January, and it is the best decision I could have made. I have lost almost as much in two months with my sleeve as I lost in 4 years suffering with my band. My band now sits in a jar in my closet, where it belongs, not in my body, it is a reminder of how far I have come and struggled, but finally I'm on my way to success. Good luck to you, you will love the sleeve, it's everything the band was supposed to be and more. -
@@Caela88 It took me a while to get to goal, so I may have well been a revision, lol. I lost 85 pounds in 12 months, and it took me an additional 5 months to lose 10 more. I'm a little on the older side (pushing 50), and since having a hysterectomy, have the metabolism of a koala bear But I lost it, I'm maintaining it so far, and that's all that matters!

Revision?
SnowDaisy replied to livelaughlove@40's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a sleeve that was revised to gastric bypass. Xx -
I like to believe that if I got to goal, and then lost my band, I'd be able to maintain. I've always believed that maintaining is easier than losing, and that's why I never go to goal before deciding on surgery; it was just too overwhelming to try and do it by myself. But the reality is, I'm pretty sure that if I lost my band, while I've learned alot and probably would not eat alot of the crap I used to eat preband, I would probably go up and up on my amounts and end up gaining. I suppose if I was at goal, and had been there for a little bit I MIGHT be able to hang on to it... I think there are people who are strong enough to keep going with the 'head start' that the band gives them, even if they lost it, but I'm probably not one of them. I did not consider other surgery types before being banded, but I think if I lost my band and was told I couldn't be rebanded for whatever reason, I would probably revise to something else. I just can't do it alone.

Did anyone feel pressure by surgeon to so bypass instead of sleeve
AngieNP replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had lap band (would never reccomend), and now have the sleeve. 5 years post op, wishing I had malabsorption. I have regained 25-30 pounds. Don't think you will never be hungry from the sleeve. I am always hungry! Even when I drop my carbs very low, I will lose about 4 pounds and then nothing for weeks. Very frustrating!! Looking into revision, yet again. I think the sleeve is 100 times better than the band, but it's not easy after the first year. -
did anyone else NOT get a hernia repair?
BethinPA replied to Obsidian's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I understand, to repair or not to repair with the initial surgery is surgeon preference, it doesn't mean one surgeon is better or more responsible than the other. Lots of people have hernias that do not cause them serious problems. I'm also told that, even if they do repair the hernia at the time of surgery, most likely that repair won't hold through the significant weight loss, and the person would need to have it revised at some later date. -
I'm impatient for my revision, but I don't have anxiety over it. I've never really been an anxious type person. But I've read enough about anxiety to know that it sucks for those that battle it. I hope your anxiety eases up and pre op passes smoothly and quickly for you. 🤗

Sleeve to bypass not feeling same restriction
GreenTealael replied to Getsleeved03's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was normal for me too. Liquids may not give you the inflammatory tightness that you experienced with VSG because the inflammation (if you have much) will be lower in your digestive system instead of close to the esophagus. Because the pyloric sphincter is *usually* bypassed when you are revised from a VSG to RNY, you *may* not feel the same restriction as with VSG. Your restriction/full sensation can also feel different. For me it’s the difference between tightness in the chest with VSG and heaviness in my lower abdomen with RNY. However I’m happy to note that both sensations made me want to stop eating. So there is a safeguard if you pay close attention. Congratulations on a safe surgery & happy recovery ❤️ -
My port flipped as well. I found out at my first fill. Like Susan, my recovery was much better and I was back at work the next business day. I had my revision surgery on a Friday. It delayed my fills a bit, so I had to deal with band-hell for a bit longer than most. I'm finally (four months out) close to my sweet spot. Good luck!

Christine, my port flipped and I had revision surgery to correct it. Between the time I arrived at the hospital, had my surgery and went home, I don't think I was even there for two hours. It was a very simple procedure and I returned to work the next day. You may feel a bit of the "pull" that you felt when you had your intial surgery, but not nearly as bad. I felt 100% within a couple of days. Katy, I had no idea mine had flipped until I went in for a fill and the doctor was unable to access my port. Nothing had felt any different to me. My best suggestion to you is that you make an appointment with your doctor to have it checked out.

Hi carlissa. I am also an RN. Other than a psychologist consult for insurance requirements, I did not have difficulty getting approval for surgery. My surgeon required just one week of liquid diet prior to surgery but no weight loss required. I had a band to sleeve revision on April 4. I'm 5'3 and my pre-surgery weight was 255. As of today I weigh 221. My only struggle is trying to get the required amount of Water intake on the nights that I work. Good luck on your upcoming surgery. I'm excited for you.
