    Hungry! (Pre-Op Diet)

One answer.....MEAT, meat, MEAT! Lots of it, carbs are the evil ones. Don't do yogurt, have a chicken breast, turkey sandwich without the bread, use lettuce, broiled fish, steak, pork chop, shrimp sauteed in olive oil with garlic. Quit feeling hungry! Eat meat! That is what I did and I got a gold star on my picture of my liver from my doctor! I ate 1,000 to 1,200 per day pre operation. After operation I am right on track! 24 pounds lost in a month!

    Hungry at night

I'm on Day 11, too. Up to about 600-700 calories a day now. I woke up starving last night and ate a little container of applesauce. I'm hungry (and maybe you are too) because I'm not getting enough calories in the day. The applesauce worked but a wiser choice would have been yogurt since it has protein.

    Weak?!

Thanks. I'm taking my vitamin and drinking my water. I'm eating soft foods like eggs, protein shakes, and cheese grits. Yogurt, cottage cheese....sometimes overcooked pasta. I can't wait to eat "real" foods, but moving to soft foods was really awesome, too. I wish I could shake this. I want some energy. sara

Do you think it's a slip??

I had been having the same symptoms, but my Dr. and I think it's actually triggered by taking Zoloft. If you're on an antidepressant, one of the possible side effects is gastrointestinal issues (reflux, vomiting, etc). Zoloft and Cymbalta are the worst offenders, though I understand the other antidepressants can also cause this problem. If you're taking an antidepressent, see if your reflux/pain/vomiting follows shortly after you take your meds. If it does, bring it up with your doctor. I'm now eating yogurt with my zoloft and it has toned down the reflux significantly. However, I'm getting off the Zoloft as soon as my dr. gets back into town.
  5. I also was too afraid to cheat. I was on straight liquids for 3 weeks post op - no yogurt, eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, NOTHING. I ate out with family several times during those 3 weeks and never once cheated. I was too afraid of damaging myself. Plus, I couldn't even meet my Water goal yet. I didn't want to force anything. It's not worth the risk IMO. You'll be able to eat soon. :-) Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Soft diet starts today! Blah.

I felt this way too, and talked to the NUT about it. But she said it was very important to start eating, even just a little bit. For two reasons, first because it will establish a healthy pattern of eating 3 small meals a day. But also because your body NEEDS food, not just protein shakes. If you don't start getting some calories your body will "hold onto" the weight, and you wont lose as fast. You need some calories and fat each day. She said the small amount we eat in the beginning isn't enough to stop the weight loss, but that our bodies really need some calories with each meal. I just started soft foods this week, and have been eating egg drop soup, turkey meatballs, cottage cheese, tomato soup, mashed potatoes, and yogurt. Even if its just a bite or two to start out slow.
  8. Hello all, I was banded the first time in 2006. I had a slip in 2009 and had a realize band implemented. I had complications with the band again and on May 25th was revised from band to RNY. I have to admit, the pain was intense. I am 10 days post op and am back at work and still have pain (though not very severe). I work in an office, so I am sedentary and am not concerned about the pain. I have lost almost 15 pounds being on the liquid diet (now able to eat pudding / yogurt / etc). I am not really sure how to measure my weight loss as I was really not morbidly obese when being revised. I can tell you I was 311 in 2006 when banded. I had dropped to 175 and then after the slip moved up to 240 in 2009 when I had the realize band put in. I was at 214 when I had the revision and am now, basically 200. I would like to be at a fit 175-190, so once the healing is done I plan on hitting the gym again. I am rambling, I know, and am not really being organized with my thoughts. I am just writing as I think about it. I just wanted to document my story and am willing to answer any questions or try to help anyone I can.

First 1-2 week foods ideas post surgery

I think the premier protein shakes & yogurt gave me crazy gas too! Hopefully I will be able to eat/drink later : ( I do have butternut squash I will try shortly.
  10. I find that if PB is warm and gooey, it spreads really good and I don't need as much. I like it on a toasted chaffle! It's also good swirled into some greek yogurt!

  12. Here is a warning........thinking about food and looking at food (Food Porn), will cause you to have serious head hunger. It is likely you are actually dealing with that given the hunger hormone was severed when they removed 90% of your stomach. In the early stages it is best to think about just meeting your Protein goals and it sounds like you are able to eat eggs, turkey, chicken.....stuff like that. I know I really struggled with Greek yogurt as well but found flavors that I could tolerate an slowly I actually began to like Greek yogurt. I like the Chobani flips. Same thing with cottage cheese which is a great protein source. I also look for ways to eat ricotta cheese and I now LOVE it. It is one of my favorites. It's even better when you can have fruit which I was allowed at 4 weeks. A grilled peach with a large spoon full of Splenda sweetened or natural honey is absolutely delicious. I use a small amount of honey because I am alergic to artificial sweeteners.
  13. You didn't say what you like to eat. There's a lot of foods you can eat at 10months out that's high in Protein. cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt, egg tuna or chicken salad, refried Beans and cheese are all really easy to eat. I don't know anyone who doesn't like Premier Protein drinks from costco. There's 18 of them in the box though but if you save receipt, Costco will take it back. Also, the Vitamin shoppe sells Pro pudding by Body tech. It comes in choc and vanilla and it's 25 grams of protein and it's yummy pudding for only 145 calories and 4 carbs.

    Quick and Easy Crab Cakes

I always tried to find ways to sneak extra Protein into everything, even normally carby dishes. ...add vanilla Protein Powder to the egg batter of French toast ...add Garden of Life Raw Fit, an extra egg and unflavored powder to Bob's Red Mill whole grain pancake mix. Tastes even better than regular. I make a big batch, freeze em and have 30 second microwave protein pancakes anytime I Want! ....mix my whole grain Cereal (Kashi Golean or bran nuts) into Greek yogurt watered down with a little milk. ...use Premier Protein vanilla as my coffee creamer. Or even the chocolate when I'm in the mood for a mocha. ....muscle milk cake batter protein powder, milk and cottage cheese tastes like cheesecake! ....OJ and vanilla protein powder frozen makes a great dreamsicle It's crazy how many new things I've discovered that are so yummy, and still good for me.
  17. My first month out my calorie range was 400 - 600, but my NUT was more concerned with me meeting my Protein and Fluid goals. Being low cal for a bit won't hurt. We have plenty of fat reserves to take care of that. I started the day with a Protein shake with ¼ - ½ cup plain greek yogurt, 1 scoop Protein powder and whatever mixin's I liked, often 1 tbsp of almond butter, sometimes a 1 - 2 ounces of fruit and some chopped spinach or fresh spinach leaves mixed with Water and served over ice. That was Breakfast and lunch was pretty similar. dinner was veg broth or clear Soup with ½ - whole scoop unflavored protein powder. In between that I sipped on my water.

I Don't Know What to Eat! Help!

My NUTs main advise with each stage was "add foods as you can tolerate them." Don't force yourself to eat what your sleeve doesn't want yet. I still can't eat any type of shredded beef because no matter how much I chew it hurts going down. Try something and if it hurts wait a few weeks. I also buy the individual prepackaged tuna and salmon that comes in different flavors. Greek yogurt in different flavors has become a staple with me. I am nearly 10 weeks out and I just this week tried leafy greens and most fruits.

    Purée stage

I just finished that stage Sunday. I didn't really puree much...some chicken salad once (canned chicken) which was okay. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta bake and I had soup once I think... I was only on puree for 5 days though so I guess it depends how long you have to do it.

    Peanut Butter

I added crystal light lemonade to my Greek yogurt until it ws smooth and light . Good flavor and not as pasty.
  21. Is this within the norm? I'm 3 weeks post op, and following guidelines from NUT. I'm eating Greek yogurts, protien shakes, soft chicken, pudding consistency potato, babyfood carrots, getting my fluids in (mostly anyway.. terrible Water nausea!) I've been having horrible continuing bouts of very loose (Liquid consistency) diarrhea for about a week I'd say. I've been cleared to eat plain oatmeal and cream of wheat, but haven't yet. Is this common, or am I destined to have a continuing affair with the bathroom. It's Sunday, so can't call....anyone now if we can take Immodium or anything else that could help?? Advice...personal experience, please!?
  22. Thanks everyone, I am glad to know I am not the only one this is happening to. I don't seem to be having a problem doing water, tea, etc. I have two kinds of protein powder that I am using... Syntrax nectar and bariatric fusion. The nectar has been a little too sweet for me and the fusion makes me so full after about four sips. I may have to try the greek yogurt and see how that goes. Mostly I am just trying to stay hydrated.

10 days post op- 1st mushy food

My experience was very similar. My first mushy food was mashed potatoes (in the hospital - my program starts mushy very quickly) and I felt nauseous and weird. Eating very slow and tiny little bites were key - like smaller than you can even imagine. Also, walking around right after I ate every time helped a lot. I found for the first couple of months every time I tried a new food I would feel a little nauseous but then the next time with that food I would be completely fine. Just keep mixing it up and trying. Maybe try the beans without the cheese or something different like yogurt or cottage cheese (depending on what your program allows). Also - if you spray low fat cheese with a tiny bit of cooking spray it will help it melt better

    Cereal and milk

I have three fourths cup cereal and one half cup of milk. That does not make my bowl very liquidy. Although I don't drink while I eat, I don't always eat solid food. I eat a lot of yogurt which most people don't use because it is not a solid. So I figured the cereal and milk is no different. I am not hungry at all during the day no matter what I eat.
  25. I had my surgery on 2/22/08. I have lost 19 pounds. My doctors liquid diet after surgery I could have runny mashed potatoes and yogurt. Everyones diets are different. I feel guilty that if I eat those potatoes I will gain the weight that I have lost. I am starting to feel hungry though and I have another week to be on liquids until next week of pureed? Anyone have suggestions?
