    Fatty Liver and WLS?

My surgeon had me on a two week liquid diet to clear the fat from the liver. He warned me that if I cheated on the diet that he would "pull out" if he saw a fatty liver. He said that it made the surgery more risky for his patient and he would not put the patient in danger because of the challenge of operating with a fatty liver. He would have you start all over with the liquid diet and try again. Turns out that my liver was not fatty, but was really large. He made the decision to go ahead and band me,because a repeat of the liquid diet wouldn't shrink my liver any more. It did make the surgery more challenging for him and I did end up with a couple of lacerations to my liver. That was extremely painful and he kept me in the hospital a couple of extra days. I am really glad that he went ahead and installed the band, because if he had pulled out because of my naturally large liver, I more than likely wouldn't have had the courage to let him try it again later!! So there you have it....it is really a lot safer for you if you have stuck to the preop diet and cleared the fat from your liver.
  2. It's just the gas - it will take some time for it to go down. Mine only swelled at the port site because I do not carry alot of weight in my stomach. I heard that it can take a couple of weeks for the swelling to go down. Just keep walking.
  3. Everyone is nervous before surgery and it is normal. Try to stay positive!! It will be alright and so much better (first weeks are the most difficult but you can do this).

    Banded 3/28/06

Congratulations on your terrific loss and welcome! I was banded 2 days after you but can't start on solid foods until week 6. Good luck and continued success.
  5. That's AMAZING! Not to be a downer, but don't expect that rate of loss always. Here is how it will go for you in general: After your amazing, large losses, expect a stall in the next few weeks. Don't freak out. Your body is just needing to adjust things and take a break. Once the stall is over, your losses should be at a more 'normal' rate of 2-5 pounds a week, depending on how much more weight you have to lose. Good luck and good job on your amazing first week loss!
  6. Outstanding! When things slow down to a normal pace (or stall) just stick to your diet plan and portions.
  7. I am even more worried now that I won't be approved because I don't think I'll make the 100lb overweight mark now. Sad thing is I've been trying to maintain my weight, if not gain about 5 pounds. However I lost a couple after I started my current job since I'm on the go constantly (nurse). Then somehow in the last week I managed to lose 6 more pounds! What the heck?? Had I been trying to lose, certainly I would have gained. Cross your fingers that between now and Monday I can get those 6 pounds back.

I'm not sure if I'm im in a stall.

Wow that's a lot of weight in a short amount of time, seems like you're on track. I know some weeks may be lower than others but you're going great Sent from my LGMS550 using the BariatricPal App

    Stall on loss

This. I fit this pattern to a T. I am 14 months out. I'm working out hard, tracking calories, and have dropped into the 4-5 bs a month range. The fast loss is only at the very beginning for most people, and will slow down. You will have stalls and it will be frustrating unless you are someone very lucky. This is a long game, not a quick fix by any means.

    Stall on loss

Well I had rny surgery and I read that it is norm to loose 5 to 15 lbs per week the first few months following surgery , so that is where my expectations came from . I am glad about losing 20 lbs but in the big scale of things was feeling discouraged since the 20 lbs was really only lost the first 2 and a half weeks then I have been stalled since not loosing anything in the last week and a half , basically since I started eating instead of drinking liquid only. Pre op diet start was 9/1 weight was 305 surgery date was 9/15 weight 294 and today 275. But again the 275 has been the same for 2 weeks now. I'm getting less then 1000 calories a day and walking a bit but not much as I have plantar fasciitis and am in pain . I fear that I won't loose the weight unless I go back to starving myself like I did the first 2 weeks after surgery. Sent from my SM-G991B using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm not sure if I'm im in a stall.

A stall is three weeks of no scale movement -- up or down. You're certainly not in a stall. One to two pounds a week is good, one or two a day? Celebrate!!

    Don’t know if I’m full.

I felt that way when I was on soft food too. Never felt full. But I always measured out my food; nutritionist said eat 2 ounces or less and I did just that. You’re still healing and it could be hard to tell. i am more than 8 weeks out and I still don’t feel full, but I feel satisfied. I always stop eating before I get to the possible full stage. My nutritionist said it’s fine as long as I am meeting my protein, liquid and carb goals. And yes I still supplement with protein drinks. Hang in there, you’re listening to your body and it’s a good thing.

    Hello From Nebraska

Hi Sunny, Nice to see someone else from Nebraska. I am still in the insurance phase. I plan on having my done either at Creighton or at UNMC here in Omaha. I talked to my insurace company and they still have not recieved my pre-auth paperwork yet. UNMC tells me check by in two weeks and if BC/BS still doesn't have it, then they will resend it. Why can't they just do it now? I guess after thinking about doing WLS for about 8 months, including the hours spent researching, I can wait a few more weeks. I just want to get things started. Hope to "hear" from ya soon,
  15. My RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery My name is Carla! I live in NJ I'm a 35 year old married mother of two. My weight loss journey started in March 2008. My son was one year old and I decided I no longer wanted to live my 300lb unhealthy lifestyle! I wanted to live to be able to see my Son grow and I wanted to be able to play with him and not watch from the side lines. I had my gastric bypass surgery Sept 15 2008. After the usual Two days in the hospital I was feeling good and diacharged. Only to return to the hospital at 4am in severe pain. I had a leak. Had to do another surgery and recovery was very painful I stayed in the hospital for three weeks. With that being said I would do it all over again. I reached my goal weight of 160lbs within the year. I maintained this weight for 5 years I was a stay at home Mom back then and I worked out full time. 6 or 7 days a week 1 1/2 -2 hours a day! I was determined to make all of my pain purpose full. But as life happened I creeped up to 180lbs and plateau there for months until I got pregnant with my daughter. My weight went up to 230lbs on my date of delivery. With some light exercise, ppd, and anxiety my weight toggled between. 215and 230 until one morning I woke up and the scale said 240! I almost died. I did not come So far to just become morbidly obese again. So on June 1 2016 I began hitting the gym hard again! It's not easy working full time. Caring for my 8year old and 2 year old. And still finding the energy to work out like I used to. But I am motivated to get my old self back. So I have been drinking 2 meals and eating one meal daily for the past week. I have my restriction back! And I'm ready to reach my goals! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. I was wondering if any of you were able to successfully visualize your thinner self before you had the surgery or soon after surgery? 1 week pre-op and I'm struggling with what my slimmer body will look and feel like. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Any peeps from Ontario, Canada

Wow getting close! Good luck just keep positive and follow guidelines and you'll be fine. It's overwhelming at first figuring out what to eat the first few weeks but then gets easier.

    Acid Reflux???

I take Nexium once a day and haven't had any reflux symptoms. I experienced some intense nausea and discomfort on occasion around week 3 post-op. The doc in the ER and my surgeon both told me to start taking my Nexium twice a day. I did for a few days, but then stopped (I have to pay out of pocket for Nexium, and it's not cheap, so that was a bit of a deterrent, as was continuing to feel icky regardless). I haven't had problems since. I don't think acid had anything to do with it, as my symptoms weren't typical heartburn stuff. Also, just a note, bile has nothing to do with acid. Bile is released for fat absorption, and it goes into the small intestine, not stomach. The stomach itself secretes acid. When you take a PPI, you kill off the acid pumps temporarily, but new ones are reinserted quite quickly, which is why you have to continue taking a PPI for a while. I sure am looking forward to going off of mine, as it costs a pretty penny!
  20. Hello apologies for the unsavory topic! I'm waiting to hear back from my surgical advice but wanted to ask here because people are so helpful, I'll be 3 weeks post op this sunday and every day since the surgery I've had bad diarrhea (as in complete liquid and orange) apologies tmi I know Has anyone else had this? I'm struggling because it makes me feel nauseous all day nearly and I know it's only a matter of time before I need to go and sit on the throne again, I lie down after and about 20 minutes later I dont feel so awful Surgery advice said they would expect it to be dumping syndrome but I haven't had sugars because they taste foul at the minute and I'm hardly eating or drinking either and it's been every flipping day now! I know it must clear up but it's making it so all I'm doing is lying down and feeling like I made a stupid decision Thanks in advance! Sam

    Guys- Post Op VSG

How many calories and protein are you guys taking in and successfully losing steady ? I was taking in a ton of protein between 120-150 and around 1200 calories and my Dr said that's too much protein and not enough calories... I lift and workout 5 days a week but have been at a stall for awhile. HW-280 SW-250 CW-220 GW-180.. I use the Myfitnesspal religiously. I just got to find what numbers helps me lose the best. I'm 5 months Post-Op Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. You should be fine to travel 4 weeks out - I was back to work day 6. You shouldn't have any issues - you won't even have your 1st fill yet and barely getting to regular food (depending on your doctor)... Why put it off - but that's just mho...
  23. After lurking around this place I thought it was proper to start an acount thus here I am. I am 10 days post opt and feeling okay for the most part. Emotionally drained and still a bit of pain at the top of my stomach but other than that doing well. I had my surgery in Sydney Australia..which is where I live..by a lovely French Doctor whose main practice is in QLD. Since my two week preopt diet I have lost about 16 kgs (35lbs) to date. :faint: I will let you knwo of my progress as I go along. Cheers Jess
  24. If you have the surgery Aug 8th it will be 6 weeks before the wedding. I see no reason for you not to have it done. I am 8 weeks post op and feeling absolutely fantastic!! Recovery should be over by then. You will still be healing inside but you should be able to have a blast at the wedding too!! If it was me I would go for it!! Good Luck and God Bless!! Fran xo
  25. I love the embrace “the suck” idea! It perfectly sums it up! I had issues with my “fat chic brain” wanting to eat even though I wasn’t really that hungry, took a while to retrain “her”. Also, sugar free bomb pops were my best friend! I also went through an emotional stage somewhere before week 5 (maybe wk3 or 4?) and hated myself for doing this to myself etc, but it passed. Most importantly, PROTEIN! I wasn’t told until I visited a support group (post op) that if you don’t reach your required protein goals consistently, you MAY experience hair loss around the 3mos mark ... I think they jinxed me lol. I couldn’t stomach the protein shakes after surgery very well, it was a mental thing, not a physical one, but I definitely didn’t meet my proteins and guess what happened?! Luckily I had tons of hair to begin with so no one even noticed but me. It only last a couple of months and I have regrowth now thankfully. Good luck and keep a journal of your feelings and losses and measurements! You’ll be surprised when you go back though it even a few months later!!
