  1. The surgery is in no way a magic cure. It’s only a tool to help. You can buy all the tools you want though, and some fancy drill may make it easier than a hammer, but your deck is still not going to get built without you doing some of the actual work. I think of the surgery more as a clean slate. Yes, the hunger does come back and no you will not be able to eat exactly like you did and keep the weight off. BUT, you will get this one time fresh start where you really do lose if you follow the plan and if you resolve to continue making those healthy choices most of the time you should be able to maintain it. I’m not gonna lie and say it’s easy cause it’s not. I have to ask myself probably once a day do I really need this or do I just want it. But it’s totally worth it to be able to feel good in my own skin.
  2. I had mine Feb 7th and the same here I still have back fat and stomach has gone down but as you say a deflated ball and unfortunately my boobs are also deflated and saggy. Once I tuck it away under clothes you can’t tell but when I remove them it can be quit discouraging 😩 but I try and look at it in a positive way and just say that is a sign of all your weight loss if you had to pick one would you go back to all the weight or where you are now. I will take my loose skin and all the health benefits over all that extra weight any day.I will just say it’s part of my progress. We have to appreciate this part of the journey also because it is journey not a sprint. IT’S ABOUT PROGRESSION NOT PERFECTION. Make the best of your journey Every one who reads this post when you get down about where you are just think of where you came from not years ago but just 6-7 months ago and appreciate the progression.🥰

    loose skin

You simply can't escape at least some scars after getting your body to that stage of excess weight, and having loose skin is one of those scars. Your body had to make that excess skin over years, and it can't just retract like a rubber band, unfortunately. Factors like age and how much weight you've lost will inform how much you have, but the best thing people can do is make peace with it, especially if, like myself, they'll never be able to afford plastic surgery to get rid of it. You can help support your skin with vitamin intake, hydration and creams, but honestly, that won't stop it from happening. I do those things to keep my skin as healthy as possible, but I'm under no illusions that it's ever going to spring back. I did this to myself, so I accept that there's a price. The upside: loose skin is easily hidden with clothes and that's waaaaay easier when you don't feel the heat as badly as you once did!
  4. Congratulation man! That is awesome. A true inspiration indeed. I have one question - did you have loose skin? How did you deal with it?

    loose skin

You can’t stop it or reduce it. It’s a bit of a luck of the draw as to how much lose skin you will have. Age, gender, how much weight you carried, how long you carried the excess weight, genetics, all okay a part. I often compare skin with a hair band that gets stretched out over time & use. Can’t save that hair band by unstretching it. Same with your skin. The only way to get rid of your lose skin is to remove it with surgery. Personally I decided against surgery. I don’t have a lot of loose skin & it can be hidden easily under clothes without need of shape wear & that’s under body con dresses too. So not really worth the surgery. Sure I have some tuck shop lady arms/bat wings but no one knows unless I wave my arms out & about. My arms are pretty toned just from doing a couple of basic resistant band stretches. I even got complimented on my arms today while trying on a one shouldered top so …. Did make me giggle to myself.
  6. it doesn't matter if it's bypass or sleeve. As someone else said, any major surgery can cause hair loss because of trauma to the body. I think we see it more often after WLS than some other surgeries, though, because in addition to the surgery stress, we're also taking in very few calories those first few months. not everyone loses hair. I lost very little. I barely noticed let alone anyone else. And for most people, you're the only one who'll notice it. Most pre-ops and early post-ops worry about hair loss (and loose skin, too), but I think i can speak for most of us who are a year or more out that in the grand scheme of things, it's really a blip on the screen. I don't know why I wasted even one brain cell worrying about it.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Here's another progress picture. Thought I'd drop it in our Feb surgery buddy thread. As I lose more weight, my body looks more ridiculous. I think it's funny but anyone else dealing with stubborn fat and loose skin left on the mid section? I look normal with my shirt down but then i lift it up and it's a deflated beach ball hanging off my mid section. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Under Boob rash

Calling your doctor on this isn't a bad idea. It also helps log that you have issues with skin rubbing and may be able to help get insurance coverage for skin removal later. Not promising, but it does help!
  9. The Greater Fool

    loose skin

The older and/or larger you are/were the more excess skin will be an issue. As we age our skin starts losing it's ability to repair itself. Likewise, the heavier we are/were the more our skin has stretched out leaving a bunch on inelastic skin. Women have the additional skin stress of carrying babies. All of these stresses take their toll that make shrinking it all back in naturally rather unlikely. There really are no products that can help your skin recover in spite of the promises. It's probably time to use that magical potion that has been passed down through the generations from mother to daughter or father to son for use "as a last resort when the need is great" with vague warnings of a "price." The evil spirits that will infest your life are a small price to pay for no extra skin. When it comes time to consider surgical options most insurance tries to call it "cosmetic" and refuse to help. The word to keep in mind is "reconstructive" for which insurance will pay. Document yeast infections, rashes, back pain, anything you can come up with. Even then it is an uphill battle. Good luck, Tek
  10. I had the sleeve, and I have PCOS. My hair was down to my butt and was shedding anyways (pcos does that). At about 3 1/2 months post op I started noticing my hair was shedding more than normal and was thinning a little. I went and got it cut to where it just touches my shoulders. That helped a lot with looking fuller, and it's easier to manage and take care of. I always make sure to get the top level amount of protein (80-90mg per day) because your roots and hair need protein to grow but can't produce it. I also take biotin and do hair masks and serums because while it doesn't do anything to prevent hair loss or promote growth, it helps your hair look and feel healthy, shiny, soft, and keeps it from being frizzy. And also, self care is so important. That's why I'm huge into skin and hair care.

    loose skin

Exercise wouldn't hurt but it will not "solve" the problem. It is inevitable. I still want to loose about 60-80 lbs and look like I have 2 sets of boobs now. If I could pull that skin up and tuck it in my bra I would be good as gold. HAHAHA 😂😂😂

    Under Boob rash

I still have the under boob rash going on , and it's been over a week .I am going insane as it's spreading .I went to the Pharmacy and they gave me anti fungal cream - it hasn't helped .I am leaving my bra off and have placed cotton towelling under them ,so skin doesn't touch skin .I am back on the triple antibiotic cream but I'm starting to think I may need a course of antibiotics .Help !! Thanks
  13. Loose skin is something that many/most will have to deal with post op in one way or another. I know there is a point that surgical removal of loose skin is the only way to deal with it. But what can you do pre and post surgery, if anything, that can help minimize the excess skin issues???
  14. Hi everyone, I had my first appointment yesterday with the hospital and I will be having my pre op tests around December time, my surgery will be early next year ! Exciting! The only thing that worries me is loosing my hair! I know it grows back but I don't want to loose it full stop ! It terrifies me , my hair is the only thing I truly like about myself, are you more likely to loose hair with the bypass over the sleeve? Is there anyone who has been lucky and hasn't lost any hair ?

Is this it? Is my body done?

one can always lose more weight by cutting calories, but you have to decide if you're willing to do that. Given that those of us who've lost a lot of weight have heavier bones and muscles than "normies" (because you needed extra infrastructure to hold that excess weight up. Granted, you lose some of it when you lose weight, but not all of it...) - plus you may have some excess skin to boot, you probably look 10 lbs less than you weigh. even if your body isn't quite done losing, I can tell you from personal experience that those last 20 lbs are a BEAR to lose. I was losing something like 2 lbs a month the last couple of months, despite a momentous effort. The closer you are to a normal BMI, the more you're eating at equilibrium (your calories in and calories out are about the same). It's a challenge to eat less than that. SO...either your body is done losing and it'll be a struggle to lose more - or your body is NOT done losing and you're just at the point where it's really tough and slow going to get those last few lbs off.

Is this it? Is my body done?

What is the online calculator you are talking about, I am curious? I don't have any tips, other than I do know the closer you get to an ideal body weight the harder it is to loose. Just keep tracking and I am sure it will come off, it is just going to be slower. Or like you mentioned, maybe increase exercise?

    August 24!

One week appointment went very well. I got three out of four drains removed, and potentially getting the fourth drain removed on Friday if I can keep my output below 20 each day. They took all the tape off of the incisions, which wasn’t very painful but did it feel weird. When they were taking stitches out of my bellybutton I could feel clearly that they were touching the skin on the side of my abdomen, despite the fact that that skin is now in the center of my stomach. I think I am going to need to reroute some nerves or some thing. Ha! Due to the fact that there was so much loose skin on my upper body, they ended up actually having to do an upper body lift at the same time. So my incisions run all the way from my elbows through my under arms and underneath my boobs. I am happy with this, because I had such trouble with skin spilling out in my under arm area that I really was concerned if they left any skin there what it was going to look like a postop. It’s probably going to be a longer recovery because of the additional area, but I am OK with that. Still not in any significant pain, although riding to and from the appointment and getting the tape and drains out absolutely tuckered me out for the day yesterday. I guess it’s hard to judge how much energy you have when you were spending all day and a recliner watching an old season of project runway. My left arm is still significantly swollen, and missing some feeling on the lower bottom part of my arm. Hoping that resolves once the swelling goes down, whenever that is.
  18. @ShoppGirl thank you for asking. I have done a lot of therapy over the years and simply i was not ready to use what I learned then. My life circumstances just did not allow me to make the adjustments without pretty much having a breakdown or loosing things I wasn’t willing to loose even tho it was hurting me. About a year and a half ago, my mind and body realized that my life circumstances had changed and I could start processing all of that and making my life better. with this year, I finally was able to start implementing the tools and tricks and skills I had learned in therapy but wasn’t able to implement because of other pressures. I feel right now that I am on my best mental footing in twenty years. I am clearer with my desires and boundaries. Frankly, right now I think a new therapist would just muddy the waters because I am doing more on my own than a therapist ever did, but using techniques that I learned from them. I have about six journals that I have filled this year which really mimic what therapy was for me. But now instead of spinning wheels and just staying alive, I feel totally different and am starting steps towards living again. If I stop making progress or hit a hard bump I am more than willing to go back to therapy, but I just don’t see the benefit right now for me. I haven’t binged since very early this year. I stopped the behavior and I am not just white knuckling my way through but finding forgiveness and inner peace to keep the urges from happening. i have been setting boundaries around the things that were causing me to eat my feelings. I am standing up and not accepting the gaslighting or other bad behaviors anymore. I never really understood before what being “ready” meant. It almost brings me to tears of relief when I think about how amazing it feels compared to the struggle. I am ready and walking the path and it feels good, even with the emotional work pain. I wish everyone could find their “ready” because it just makes life easier, even when doing hard work.
  19. I second Built Bars as the best protein bars available. They’re lower in calories and sugar than most other protein bars. I wouldn’t consider them “meal replacement bars,” but perhaps you are using that term loosely. You should easily be able to find a coupon code for 12%-15% off with Honey or Capital One browser extensions. Be warned, though — you will get hooked on them and buy way too many because they keep releasing limited-edition flavors. I personally prefer the regular bars to the puffs, but they are all delicious. Pro tip: a lot of the bars are better warmed in the microwave (10-15 seconds on high, or use the “soften butter” setting if you have one).
  20. Haven't updated this thing in a while. It's just to keep me accountable and I know others can read this so feel free to chime in. I'm officially almost entering my 7th month of post op life from my gastric bypass. I feel so much better and I've lost over 100 lbs but there are days I still feel like it won't all really matter at all until I am stick skinny (which wouldn't be possible without plastics and even then I don't think so). I hate that I think that way - it makes it hard to be happy for myself and then that feeds into not meeting my goals.

I was in a weight loss rut for a while there - like the whole month of August basically was me just gaining and losing the same 4 lbs. I figured it was just a weight loss stall part of the process because I hear there's a big stall 6 months out. I also was macro and calorie counting but I was drinking more alcohol than I ever have since surgery. I think that contributed to it immensely. Just to be clear I wasn't drinking out of transfer addiction - just going to more social events and dinners because my life has gotten so incredibly busy. It's amazing because I have the confidence to go out and be social now but it makes it harder to navigate the strict calorie limits and hydration goals when you're always hanging out with people.

Anyway, I really put a lot of thought into calories the past two weeks and stopped drinking too. I finally broke my stall. I went from 240 to 236 and it seems to be sticking. I'm at this weird part in the surgery journey where the honeymoon is over. I no longer get food stuck in my esophagus on the regular but I have noticed I am starting to feel nauseous after eating (probably because I don't have the limitation of the food getting stuck) so I don't realize how much my body is actually okay with.

So now I'm at this point where I'm figuring out how much of different types of foods I can really eat without making myself nauseous. It's a work in progress but I'm determined. I'm usually good around 1/2 a cup of carbs and 1-1.5 cups of vegetables. Protein is always different. Sometimes I can eat it no problem, others it's one of the only foods that still get "stuck". I try not to go crazy counting calories because I have a history of eating disorders. I mainly try to stay under 1300 calories. My BMR is around 1900 right now. Instead of counting every single morsel, I make sure I eat more in the beginning of the day so I don't snack at night and I weigh my food if it's a fat or carb.

I'd really like to add more exercise back into the equation but I've been on my *ss for the past 2 weeks because I sprained my tailbone. It's finally better so I'm going to try doing a mile run and a 2 mile walk at least 3 times a week to start out. Weathers also clearing up for outdoor runs and I'd like to get my sweat on anyway.

But anyway, I feel like I'm at this point of my surgery journey that doesn't get talking about a lot. The pre op and right after surgery phases are talked about most but the most important part seems to be what happens after all the cool perks start dying down? Hunger comes back, or you're able to increase portions, introduce foods back, etc. I'd love to talk to others about this point just for support. I know it just comes down to tracking and movement but sometimes it does feel like you're doing it all and those numbers won't budge (they don't go up, but they don't go down). For me it's best not to obsess over the number. I can get really depressed checking my weight everyday. I'm down to checking about 3 times a month now.

Not sure what else I'm trying to say here. Just want to keep going. My first goal weight was 220 that I set for myself. I'm about 15 lbs away from it. I think once I hit 220 and maintain it for 2 months I'll set a new goal weight for 200 lbs. I think at that point I'll be ready for plastics. I'd love to have my arms tightened, my stomach skin removed and my boobs lifted. Everything else I can take or leave haha

  21. It's nice to feel the loose material around my ankles too. I used to take off my shoes after a long day and there'd be an imprint in my skin from the shoe around my ankle because it was so tight and my ankles would swell. I feel how loose my shoes are now and it's so much more comfortable.

    Puree week

I lost like crazy week 1. Week 2 (starting purées) I didn’t loose an ounce. Today is day 1 of week 3 (my 2nd week of purées) and I finally had movement on the scales.
  23. LookingForward22

    Weight during preop

I’m sorry. Sometimes family thinks they are helping or being supportive and they aren’t. Quitting eating won’t help, that may make your body go into starvation mode and hold on to EVERYTHING. Week 2 post op I was barely eating 500 calories and missing my water goals as I transitioned to purées - trying to work out the new foods and making sure things sat well, and I didn’t loose a pound. Once I started hitting my protein, water and calorie goals - I started to see movement again. If you are weighing and measuring everything and your nutritionist is working with you - stick to your plan and try to implement any changes they suggest… stay the course. You will be doing everything right post surgery and hit stalls or see fluctuations - just stay the course and things will correct. Best advice I had on this board was this journey is not a straight line down… it’s a jagged line that will go up, plateau and go down - but if you stick with it you will get there. Keep working with your nutritionist… if you feel like they aren’t listening to you ask if there is another you can work with or talk to. Keep hydrated and try to keep your calories in range and meet any goals they give you. You have lots of support here. If your program has not told you to loose, maintain or other instructions - keep checking in and working with them and ask them directly about your concerns. Hopefully they can put your mind at ease.
  24. LookingForward22

    Weight during preop

Could the fluctuation be fluid retention or your monthly cycle? Make sure you are measuring and tracking everything so you can go over with your nutritionist at that appointment. Did your program give you a goal or an expectation? My program told me I couldn’t gain weight from my initial weigh-in, but I wasn’t required to loose.
  25. Weird nsv as of late. I used to be a size 11 in women's shoes at target. I recently bought a new pair of sneakers from target and had to get a 10. Now that I'm wearing them they're actually too loose and I could've went down to a 9 or 9.5. I didn't realize your feet get smaller when losing lbs.
