Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

@mousecat88 Here's my face shortly after starting keto. Mind you, I was 37 in this pic, now 38. I had pimples ALL over...the sides of my nose, sides of my neck, my chest...you name it, there was probably a pimple there. Tiny bumps, big bumps...its was awful so I feel your pain. Now It's all clear. Beating insulin resistance with surgery AND diet will take care if it eventually.

Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

I truly think the acne troubles could be part of your body trying to heal insulin resistance. Most people that are significantly over weight will have some level of IR. Good news is, due to having the surgery, your metabolic processes will eventually stabilze and your face will start to clear. This happened to me when I started eating keto...it took about 2-3 months to chill out and has been chilled ever since I would break out like I was 13 and those zits would HURT!

Fat shaming ?? Post op over 4 yrs

I don't judge anyone, in fact I mind my business (unless they ask me a direct question, then I will tell them about surgery, keto or intermittent fasting) After all I don't go around providing fashion, makeup, business, financial and child rearing tips to strangers that didn't ask for it. Why should I give tips for weight loss (It seems like an incredibly narcissistic thing to randomly do)

    AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!

Hahahaha! IKR?!!!! You are more brave than I! No way will I tell my RD about this experiment! What this is telling me is that I can do Atkins (any version), I can LC, I can Keto/Paleo/Whole30, whatevs! LOL. But I'm not cut out to be a pure carnivore. I'm a straight up, mid-hedonist omnivore! And IIIIIIIIIIII LIKE IT! Ha! I swear, I was jonesing for any veg yesterday. ANY veg. And I about cried to eat that broccoli and it was gone so dang quickly! *snort* I think the reasoning for doing this AMAW/CAMAW thing is: 1. To get back to basics of protein first and fill your pouch with dense protein. 2. Eat less (calling BS on this, cuz it made me have a meat binge last night) 3. Dump fluid. 4. Quick weight loss 5. Losing cravings/control appetite (not so much) *sigh* So far it's not helping. But maybe I'm detoxing right now? I do better when I IF. Seriously! LOL, thanks for experimenting with us though. I hope you will stick it out for the whole week? The only thing I think would be worse is the pre-op liquid diet 5 day pouch reset. OMAGERD! That would be terrible terbs!

    Stigma with WLS

I have told a pretty good number of people. I would have to say that the reception that I have received has been mainly positive (though I'm not sure what is said when I am out of ear shot.) My husband was initially hesitant about me having the surgery. He felt that it was a drastic solution to a problem that I had been fixing previously (I lost 90lbs on keto.) But he was heavy himself. However, after he lost weight through a diagnosis of a medical condition he has - it kind of put things into perspective for him, I guess? I also researched the topic heavily and brought the information to him. I explained to him that I had a combination of factors against me and though I could lose weight on keto, it was not sustainable as a long-term solution for me. I also told him that there were scientific studies that advised that the body is so resistant to diets, that they almost always fail to maintain a long term loss (like Weight Watchers.) I explained to him that like his weight affecting his joints (he had a bad back and knees), my weight was affecting me in ways that were starting to become difficult to deal with. Now, my husband has stated that he'd love me regardless of the weight I'm at, but he wants me to be happy and healthy. He's been on board for awhile now and even went to a support group meeting with me. My brothers, who I'm close to, have been incredibly supportive as well. My mom? Not so much. But like someone mentioned previously in this chat - people are resistant to change. The only thing is that I wish people would ask me MORE questions about the surgery. I don't mind telling people that I am having the surgery, but I would like a chance to explain to them why it is a solution for me. I am also a huge medical geek and love explaining medical procedures. Thankfully, I've had a lot of support.

    AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!

breakfast this morning on Day 1. Or should I say Brunch, cuz I just ate it. Turned out to be one of my Psylli Egg McBiscuits The biscuits are one of my creations and are totes legal for CAMAW! Warning this biscuit is a total gut bomb. You have to have ZERO swallowing issues and be fully hydrated BEFORE eating it! I used different ingredients for this one, but you can read the cooking instructions here on my old - now defunct blog. http://fluffychixcook.com/egg-fast-breakfast-biscuit-low-carb-keto-breakfast-yum/
  7. I borrowed this idea from another site. But to be fair, it's a concept that is not new to the low carb/keto community. Atkins '72 had you shoot for your daily protein goal and to keep your carbs (whole, non-net carbs) to about 10g or less per day (loosely). If you can't do <10g of carbs per day, then try to keep them as low as possible and definitely do NOT exceed 20g of whole non-net carbs. So those of you who know me, know I get bored with my same ol' same ol' routine! So I felt like mixing things up and tightening up the carb wagon a bit. I'm eating a crap ton of carbs for my body (about 50-60g per day whole which comes out to about 30-40g net after fiber subtraction). And what tends to happens when you lower your carbs is that you up dietary ketosis (aka you become a fat burning monster, especially if you've already been low carb for a while--you lose your appetite; drop water retention; and you might just lose a couple of pounds of fat in the bargain--you also return back to easy satiety). And come on...after Fatsgiving, don't we all need to adopt a little austerity? The rules of the game are simple: AMAW = All Meat All Week (Meet only for the week--but I'm gonna include eggs, egg whites, poultry, game, domestically and internationally produced red meats, etc, cured meats/jerky/biltong, et al, bone broths and stocks and also all seafood/fish in the meat category) CAMAW = All Cheese and Meat All Week (although personally I think it should be MACAW rather than CAMAW and I'm gonna include other forms of dairy + protein supplements + non-milk dairy like almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk provided it fits into the carbs/calories scenario previously discussed, since you're already eating cheese--it just has to fit into your 10g-20g of whole carbs for the day.) Fats = Healthy Fats as much as you want/can handle (or as little) provided you stay within your daily carb/caloric goal for the day. This would not ideally include nuts/seeds/nut butters, but again, if that is the line in the sand for you, then we'd rather you play with us for the week rather than sit it out cuz you need your mother truckin' nuts. Right? Am I right? Healthy sources of fats = olive oil, evoo, evco, evpo, avocado oil, mct oil, grassfed butter, avocados, lard, tallow, schmalz (rendered chicken, duck, or goose fat), and if you choose to eat nuts/seeds/nutbutters they would also provide fat as well as protein and carbs. Water/Liquids = 100oz or more per day Vitamins = Of forkin' course, silly! Coffee = yes Tea = yes ****************************** We'll start tomorrow, Sunday December 2, and continue through Saturday, December 8. Who's with me?

    Tespo

I purchased the Tespo 5 weeks pre surgery and started using the energy and women’s multi-vitamin. My husband is not sleeved, and he he loves his men’s daily ad the energy. Total output is about 1 oz and the flavors are not bad. He mixes it with his Keto drink and can’t even tell it’s in there.
  9. I don't call myself "keto" although I am not only by virtue of low carb dieting, but also cuz of low calorie diet. I'm in dietary ketosis (aka producing ketones and using ketones/fat for fuel). I have issues with the high fat of the current keto model, so I do a more moderate fat diet. My numbers are more: 30% P, 55% F, 15% C (or for 850cals I get: 64g Protein; 52g Fat; 32g Carbs (total, which nets to around 20g from veg etc). It sure works for me. I also IF to further reduce insulin resistance and assist with fat loss and autophagy.

    Mental Derps 101

I have a feeling your story is me in a few months! First off, we're human, we've struggled and we certainly can be our own worst enemy. I get in my own way ALL the friggin' time Be an advocate for yourself and learn all you can. Read, read, read! Just remember, there's no reason to "chug" protein shakes, if you do, only chug the ones with minimal to no sugar and don't go over your daily protein macro set by your doctor. For women especially, just about anything that raises your blood sugar and causes insulin responses can trigger your body to store fat. #1 thing responsible for that is glucose and it comes from several different places, not just what you eat. We are 100% commercial grade, fat storing machines meant to survive and populate the world in all circumstances LOL There is such a thing as too much protein. Protein metabolism, handled by your liver, has a limit. Our bodies make glucose from 2 main sources, #1 the break down of fat in the form of triglycerides in your blood and, you guessed it, #2 proteins...in the form of amino acids. Proteins are strings of amino acids. If you eat too much protein, that protein will become the preferred source of gluconeogenesis...in simpler terms, that's process of your liver converting those aminos to glucose, which in turn can cause blood sugar spikes, which in turn can trigger fat storage, which in turn can lead to dreaded weight loss stalls and gains (like you already experienced). OMG all the science! LOL I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm speaking from the multitudes of knowledge gained while following a keto/LCHFMP diet for nearly 2 years. If you want to put your mind at ease, kill it with knowledge. The more educated you are, the less there's a need to freak out. No matter your diet, bio-science such as protein metabolism is the same for all of us (mostly). Don't forget....YOU GOT THIS!!! 💓
  11. Perhaps as a precursor, clean out your diet completely. That may be enough to get the ball rolling and ease the transition into Keto. Keto is strict but manageable if you really want to do it. Initially, many people feel withdrawl and flu like symptoms, so be prepared for that. Other than the excess/higher fat consumption and lower protein intake, its strikingly similar to the diet directly after WLS. You can do it! Cheering you on!
  12. Hey guys I had my surgery in 2013 5 years out I've gained back about 20 lbs from my lowest weight (210 to 230). I know I have to eat better and thinking about starting this diet for the new year. Have you tried it? Did you like it? Did you not? Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. Ok, so yes, I've had 1 episode of RH. Sorry you are dealing with this. But it's common. I would personally NOT add carbs. By keeping enough protein and fats in your diet to be truly keto, you will level and flatten out your blood sugar/insulin response. When you add carbs, you increase the amplitude of the blood sugar rollercoaster and the severity of the RH. The big thing to know is if you are truly hypo or if for some odd reason, you're turning into a T1 diabetic (not producing insulin) and that sometimes happens suddenly to adults. It's called LADA. But, if it were me (and it is), I'd buy a test meter and carry it with you at the first sign of symptoms. I'd buy packages of peanut butter you can squeeze into your mouth. And also carry glucose tablets in your purse. 5g of glucose tablets will raise blood glucose usually about 10points. So in an emergency you eat 2 of them and bam, emergency gone. Then you follow with a packet of peanut butter. Or nuts. Then you have to be on the lookout for the rollercoaster that "might" happen for the next day or two. I followed about two hours later wtih a very low carb, higher protein/fat mini meal. And had no other issues.

    November Bypassers!!

two weeks post-op I was finally give the OK to move to soft foods. My first meal was refried beans with melted cheese and it was very good! Made some eggs in the pressure cooker last night and was barely able to finish one egg, so now getting used to the very small portions. My wife bought a Chicken of the Sea "infusions" tuna which has olive oil and basil. Half way through my pouch said I'm full and this thing is only 2.8 oz, hardly enough to make a sandwich one month ago.....so this will take some adjustments. Any good meals others are relaying on? I may try some keto egg cups as a breakfast.
  15. Hell everyone 5yr out from Sleeve this month so frustrated gained 30lbs after Neck Surgery 2017 been on Keto lose 13lbs still struggling Ughh
  16. IF Strikes again back down to 156 after a few days of 16:8, 18:6. Happy to see it will be my maintenance tool. Also, psyllium husk in a keto friendly bread I made sat like a log in my sleeve but cleans the plumbing
  17. Hi, I am currently on keto diet and lost 18 pounds, i have to loose 10 more to reach my goal weight. Any one here did keto pre-op and continued it post-op as well? Please share some tips and advices. Thanks in advance.
  18. So I’ve been way off track for the last week with my eating. Not following my rules. So today I’m getting back on track starting with a 5 day pouch reset diet. Then back to Keto because it was working.
  19. I’ve been cheating for the last 4 days. I’m going to restart my Keto diet tomorrow. I’m feeling really sick right now.
  20. You've got this! For me, I had to get extreme but found that pure Keto works great for me. Hubs and I have tried cycling up on our carbs and we both feel miserable AND find a lot of our health issues quickly creep back. So for us both, it's pretty much long-term ketosis. I feel very blessed to have had the surgery, and would do it again for SURE. People ask me "don't you regret the surgery? don't you wish you had just done keto in the first place?". And I answer them, "NO". my surgery was the first step, maintenance via Keto is the long haul

Whooshes and Stalls - Why weight loss isn't linear

In the keto world where I come from, just like here, folks are plagued with the dreaded "stalls" then like magic, the scales begin to move again in the desired direction. I'm surprised I've never heard the topic of the "whoosh effect" discussed in here. For the sake of not writing a novel, I'll provide infographics and some helpful links to read for those interested. I'm not here to argue about the validity of this concept so please, if you don't agree, feel free to leave adult-worthy, constructive feedback or just scroll on by. I personally have experienced several "whooshes" over the course of the past year and half, so if anything, this stuff makes sense. What's a Whoosh? Have you stalled for 2-3 weeks or even gained a few extra pounds, then wake up the next morning to see the number on the scale drop considerably? The "whoosh effect" is essentially the period of time during a "diet" when fat loss becomes noticeable and the graphic below shows why. Google has a ton of references on this. This link explains things on an easy to understand, high level https://mysugarfreejourney.com/keto-questions-what-is-the-whoosh-effect/ Also, this lovely lady does an excellent job at explaining the "whoosh effect" in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF3rmi4DJAw P.S. Just ignore the keto aspect of things. Fat loss happens the same way for everyone no matter how you're losing it...unless you get lipo and that's a whole 'nother thing LOL
  22. I should add that I am not allowed fruits, nuts/seeds, or carbs that don't come from vegetables or dairy. It really limits my options. It's basically a ketogenic diet (from what I know of the keto diet). I do like fish, which I can eat more of than I am currently. But even the examples you show are outside my allowance, with the 400 calorie max right now. I could cut a few things out, of course, but then I'm back to struggling to get that 60g protein minimum!

    Rash and bad breath

I have been getting a small rash on my neck. It seems to go away and then comes back. I plan on asking the Dr. about it but it started around the same time that he had me start back on the blood thinners while i am home.. (I have 9 more days of that). Now yall have me wondering. I am not sure what keto rash is, but if whatever this rash is that keeps appearing and disappearing has nothing to do with the blood thinners, i will be ok with that LOL.

    Rash and bad breath

Mine wasn't Keto rash, I thought it was at first but it turned out to be something different. Good luck!
  25. Swanton_Bomb

    Rash and bad breath

Interesting. I never heard of keto rash before. Is it common? The mouth funk is definitely ketosis though, I noticed it after 2 days, and unless you are guzzling apple juice for your liquids you are probably in it without trying because your carbs will naturally be so low at this point. The strips aren't too expensive and can be found in any pharmacy or online.
