April 2022 Surgery Buddies
Mariann812 replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Happy Friday!!!!! I hope the april surgeries who went this week OR today are are on the mend and doing well! I am apparently going to get a CPAP as I received a call from the CPAP Home person today and she said that my doctor had just ordered it. She said she will be in contact with me regarding when it can be picked up.🤷♀️ I spoke with the Personal Nurse Advocate on Wednesday. She was nice, but didn't have anymore information at this point than I do. 🤷♀️ She and I had a good long laugh at the fact that it was quite obvious my surgery would NOT be Monday, 4/11. 🤷♀️ She told me she would put in a call to the surgeon's practice and find out what was going on. THIS is what's going on: I'm getting a CPAP machine. 🤷♀️ Oh, and I haven't heard back from the PNA yet. 🤷♀️ I am now thinking that it might be a good idea for me to look into surgery mid-June when school ends. I know I am having a hernia repair and RNY, and in light of those facts, i'm thinking that more time to recover would likely be smarter than less time. My husband agrees. Lots of shrugging in this post...🤷♀️...I did everything I could to have this happen on Monday, but it's just not to be. Time to get the house cleaned to within an inch of its life, and just wait. It's all good. Wishing everyone a restful weekend! -
March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello. Yall are the best. I had my surgery a qeek ago today and still on the lovely liquid for probably another week. I don't go back to the Dr. Until the 19th so they should tell me something then I suppose! -
You will almost certainly need to meet with a nutritionist/dietician. They will be able to give you all sorts of advice. But you can also check out a textbook on nutrition from the library. Just make sure it's a text book, not some fad book. Get yourself a food scale that measures in grams and ounces. 4 ounces of meat/fish is a serving. Restaurants will advertise a 12 or 16 oz steak - that is 3-4 servings! Read the nutrition facts on the food you are eating: a serving of cheese is one oz. Weigh out one once (28g) of cheese (or chips, if you must) and see how much you are used to eating. Pick up your fork to take a bite then put down the fork until you have completely finished chewing and swallowing the mouthful of food. Take smaller bites: like the size of the top half of your thumb (they will need to be even smaller after surgery. If you are choking, you're either not chewing enough or you're eating too fast. SLOW DOWN! No one is going to take your food away from you! Start counting calories using an app like MyFitnessPal

Regret is normal and part of the process for many

SleeverSk That was beautiful i am impressed with you i felt a little bit like that when i had BOTH HIPS replaced i went through so much emotionally that i ( 10 yrs, in recovery for alcoholism) i sat in my recliner and ate morphine like they were candy because i didn't want to "FEEL" so i numbed my feelings for weeks and then i ran out of pain meds and all the feelings i numbed came flooding back and let me just say i was a mess the morphine was gone they were no longer delivering them to my house and i was " on the pity pot for at least 3 weeks and wanted to die because i still had no meds and no one wanted to help me aside from my wife who anyway i was able to get my shi*t together and take the meds like they were prescribed , my life got better and i got better and if you feel like you won't get better you're wrong I'm telling you, you will it's all part of the process be gentle with yourself you deserve to be happy and deserve to be loved even though you may not feel it now theyll come a day you will look back and say " all the kicking and screaming i got through it " youre stronger then you think , so keep your head up you are so worth it. Coop -
Yeah it falls off really fast the first couple of weeks. Enjoy.

You will be eating a LOT less after surgery, so you will save money in the end. BUT more importantly, your body is worth it. Reduce costs elsewhere in your life, don't sacrifice your nutrition (especially don't skip vitamins - if you the Pro-Care health one a day it's like a dollar a day - you're WORTH IT!!!!). I know that for some people a $3 protein drink (the cost of a core power at a 7-11) is expensive, but so many of us are used to spending more than that on a breakfast sandwich. You will probably only drink one protein shake a day after the first month, and eventually you might not drink any. You will have to try different brands. For me personally, I can't tolerate the powders and buy only the premade shakes. I like the Fairlife core power chocolate (tastes like chocolate milk!) and they are available a lot of places.

Like most surgeries, my first three days were rough. I did make myself start walking right away. First day wasn’t much, maybe a block or so. I slowly increased every day. I’ve always felt gentle exercise helps me with pain control, plus it’s good for prevention of post op complications like blood clots and pneumonia. By week three I was back to work full time as a nurse.

Day 4 pre op liquid diet
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for posting this!!! I was looking for some tried and true options. I have to do a week of pre op liquid diet and then of course post op. Every company says theirs is the best, so to hear from ladies who actually tried some and have real opinions is super helpful. -
I'm 3 1/2 weeks away from my surgery and I'm SO EXCITED!!!!! I'm not nervous at all. Is that weird? I was a little worried about the gas pain afterwards but I had my gallbladder removed in 97 and they had to inflate my stomach with gas then, too, and I didn't have any gas pain (it was mostly discomfort from the 4 lap scars). Not super excited about the large possibility of major hair shedding, but that didn't happen with any of the other surgeries I had in the past. I also have PCOS, so I'm used to my hair shedding. I have thick hair, so nobody ever notices. And I'm making sure I have plenty of moisturizer for my skin because I've been hearing the surgery can make your skin drier and itchy, and I already deal with that. I don't want it to get worse. But even with that stuff, I'm not nervous or scared. I'm excited and READY!!!!!

Thank you so much for your replies. I feel a little better. I don't remember having any gas pain when my gallbladder was removed. The main pain I had was from the incisions, and that was really when I overdid it and didn't let myself rest. I had worse, lingering pain when I had all 4 wisdom teeth and an additional tooth removed all at once in a surgery center. Actually had to take pain meds for like 3 days afterwards. I was MISERABLE. So here's hoping I have the same experience with wls that I did when my gallbladder was removed. Thanks again, ladies!! -
Question about hair loss after sleeve
ms.sss replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To those of you who have had your sleeve for a while (i’m 3.5 yrs post op sleeve) how much hair have you lost i lost, i would say, about 30-40% of my hair in total. Started round 3 months postop, hit its peak around 5-6 months postop, and already started noticing little chciken hair regrowth around 7 months postop. My hair went back to pre-op state about a year after that (i.e., all the regrowth got to be the same length as the rest of the hair on my head…but i had shorter hair, like just below jawline) Was it sudden or gradual? Is it in clumps or shedding? pretty sudden…i noticed a relatively large cllump of hair in my hand after conditioning in the shower one day. But in terms of noticeably, it was falling out all over, not in patches. For a couple months after it started i had CARPETS of hair in my bathroom floor that needed vacuuming more often that usual. But no one notices (or at least didn’t say anything to my face) except me and my hairdresser. Did you find Biotinhelped? Nope. Do you have any special shampoos or hair masks or supplements you use to help slow down the Hair loss and/or speed up regrowth? Nope. ALSO, didanyone notice any drying of their skin? If so, what do/did you use to help with that? How long did it last? Is it reallybad, or just mild? i had/have dry skin normally so cant really say, but i did feel dryer than normal in the first couple months, but I attribute that to low water intake in the beginning and the fact that it was dead of winter at the time. -
hello & welcome! My husband and I are getting the bypass too. We have all our clearances finished and now are just waiting on a date. I have requested for us to have surgery the same day or close to it. We are in our 50's and are empty-nesters. Our adult twins will come to help us in the first week after surgery. It's so exciting to be doing this with my husband - it's brought us closer really - having a common goal. Good luck to you both!

Question about hair loss after sleeve
Lefti replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My hair started really falling out around 3-4 months. I had really thick hair, so no one has noticed. I asked my surgeon about Biotin, and he basically said it's like throwing money out the window. He said to make sure I get my protein in and take my vitamins. I was definitely freaking out for a while when it started, but it seems to have stopped now. -
Question about hair loss after sleeve
summerseeker replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My scalp was real itchy too. I am just over 4 months out and am shedding lots, I am going to have it cut short next week and I am so unhappy about it but its not the end of the world. I know it will come in again as it has happened to me before at menopause and at a time of extreme stress. -
Question about hair loss after sleeve
Queen ApisM replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My skin was so, so itchy early on! It drove me nuts but then it stopped. Re: hair loss, mine was shedding. Massive amounts of shedding. I shed a lot before surgery, but afterwards it was nuts. I really did wonder how I had any hair left on my head. It started in month 2 or 3 and continued through about month 7 (roughly). I have very thick hair, so most people cannot notice but I did, as did my hairstylist! I did not take biotin beyond what is in my bariatric vitamin - I just let it run its course. I have been very good about my vitamins and protein intake. That's not going to stop it from happening, but it is good for the regrowth. At about 7 months out, I cut my hair to my shoulders (it was very long before) and that made it less noticeable (to me). My stylist also said it had started coming in again, because my roots were thicker than the midshaft and ends of my hair. I also have been trying not to wash my hair too much and my stylist and I agreed to avoid anything that strips the hair, though I am still dying the roots, but no balayage for me for a while. Not going to lie, the hair loss stressed me out, but cutting my hair helped lessen the visual impact. And now I can tell the hair shedding has reverted to normal levels and my hair is growing back. -
Well done, it comes off pretty quick in the weeks after surgery

Amazing how each doctor says different things.. My doctor said 4 to 6 weeks..

Question about hair loss after sleeve
SleeverSk replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I found my skin very dry early on, I just increased my moisturiser use. my hair started to shed heavily about the 4 month mark I think. I don't think there is anything you can do about it. I found after about 6 weeks it slowed down but I have days were more hair sheds and more seems to come out when I shampoo.I have lots of new growth that is about 2 to 3cms long at the moment so that really weird especially in my fringe. I did cut about 6 inches off my length. Overall I have lost more than half the volume of my hair but I had thick hair to start with so only those who know me well, my hairdresser and of course me noticed. I have been taking a liquid collagen supplement and using cel shampoo not sure if they have helped though -
So I’m in the part of the bariatric program where I have to lose a percentage of weight to qualify. Now that may not sound like very much but for someone who doesn’t lose weight easily at all it’s a little bit more harder for me. This is only 11 pounds, once I lose that I do a weight check in and then I get my surgery date. Once I get closer to that surgery date then I have the two week preop liquid diet. I need help and support as to how to start the weight loss going? Should I just go ahead and go into the liquid pre-op diet to lose the initial wait to get in and get my date?

At my center, the first two weeks post surgery is focused solely on fluid intake. Protein is not the focus. They said the number one reason for rehospitalization after surgery is dehydration, so they don't worry about protein intake for the first two weeks. -

Regret is normal and part of the process for many

Just want to thank you Guru . . . I'm 5 weeks out from surgery (May 18) and struggling with fear, negative feedback from friends and general anxiety. I don't have as much weight to lose as some, but the VSG was recommended by my (Harvard trained) internist who has watched me struggle for many years now with one diet after another. At 78, carrying around 50 extra pounds and sometimes 25 more more is no joke and I would love to spend the last part of my life being able to move better and with less pain. Other than the weight, I've been blessed with great health although I'm 78, am still very active. Your post this morning helped me more than I can tell you and reinforces that I should not cancel the surgery out of fear that I will not be able to make it out of the "dark hole" that inevitably follows a major surgery. You are an inspiration! -

I am 10 days post-op today. The first 3 days after surgery it felt very difficult to get fluids down. I was getting worried. At my appointment with my surgeon on post op day 4 he did a barium swallow. He first asked me to drink a full medicine cup of the barium. I looked at him like he was nuts, and asked if he was sure. I mean I had only been hearing “sips only”. But, the gulp of barium went down easily and went straight past my pouch as it was supposed too. I got to see the fluid pass thru on the screen, which helped me mentally know things were ok in my belly. Lol. My surgeon said I had likely been swallowing air when sipping which made the pouch feel full. So he advised after drinking, to keep my lips closed and forcefully swallow. I did that for a bit and now feel like I drink like I was able to before surgery. My next post op appointment is today and I am hoping to graduate from liquids to purée. Good luck to you!
