If you are on any blood pressure meds, you may need a lower dose. I was dizzy for a while after surgery, probably low blood pressure (mine has always been on the low side, but was normal at my heaviest, now it's low again). I ended up passing out last week and messing up my ankle when I fell, but I think that may have been a reaction to the booster shot. Definitely sit down if you're feeling dizzy!

I had my sleeve surgery on 8/26. I was 235lbs, now 180. My goal is 145 to 150. I've been bouncing around 180 for the past week or so. I have found that I will drop a pound a day for a week, then stall for a week or two, then drop a pound a day again for a week or so. It's super frustrating during the stalls, but my nut said it's totally normal. What I have found is that if I focus on bumping up my protein, the stall seems to break, regardless of calories. The protein shakes I drink are high in calories, so even if I'm eating 900 to 1,000 calories, but hitting around 80-90 grams of protein, my weight starts to drop again. Almost ALL restaurant food! It's such a shame because I am good at choosing healthy options, and enjoy sitting at a table and being waited on when I'm too tired to cook myself, but it all tastes SO processed! I took my 5 y/o to Applebee's yesterday and I ordered the 6 oz. sirloin. It was so nasty, it's like they smothered it in liquid smoke or something. We went to a Logan's a couple weeks ago, and I spent $30 for the filet - it was terrible! And for only being able to eat not even half of it, totally not worth it. I tried the mashed potatoes, I could taste that they were fake boxed. I've been to Olive Garden and ordered the shrimp scampi just to eat the shrimp out of it - again totally not worth the cost. I'm finally learning it's not worth it to go out to eat - suck it up and cook at home. (Don't judge me for the chain restaurant choices! I live in a small rural town and that's about all we have). it's the infamous three-week stall (this early stall happens to probably 90% of us. It's usually the third week after surgery (hence the name), but not always. It can happen any time within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery). If you do a search on it on this site, you will find over 17,000 posts on it (and not, I am NOT kidding). Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It usually takes 1-3 weeks to break, but it WILL break and you'll be on your way again.

Thank you! I will be meeting with my surgeon in a couple of weeks and this is definitely on my list of questions. I know liquids (including protein drinks) and purées slide through me like water so I stick to eating "real" food (for lack of a better term) as much as possible. I'm still losing inches so I'm probably just overreacting. lol -

Can you describe your binging episode in detail? What food? How much? How long did you take? Did you drink during the episode? How much? We can binge if we work at it and know how to do it. Some of us just happen on it by accident. It won't look like pre-op but it's possible. There are ways to prevent thoughtlessly over eating, the same ones even non-ops use. Only put measured portions on your plate and put the rest away before you begin eating. Focus on eating when you are eating. The surgery can do a lot of the work but in some situations it's still up to us. ETA: Responding to your thread title, no, you have not ruined your tool. It takes a lot more than three or four binging episodes to affect your pouch. The thing to be careful of is, again, building a bad habit that eventually may. Good luck, Tek -
Hi everyone! I had Gastric sleeve in Mexico on October 28th and weighed 283. Today I weight 268. My weight has been 268 for 2 and a half weeks, I managed to get down to 266 Saturday but then went back up!. I’m not eating over 7-800 calories, take in a good amount of water, my protein could be better but I definitely hit at least 40 grams which is what was put to at least hit (40-60 per nutritionist). I move around and walk for at least 15-20 min. What is going on? Is something wrong with me? Did I pay 4500 for nothing? I’m very depressed and thinking I’ll never lose weight. I eat a variety of food I don’t limit anything but it’s all home food not eating pizza and stuff. I eat grilled chicken tenders, sweet potatoes whole wheat toast boiled eggs veggies yogurt all healthy and no more than 4-5 bites per meal. I’m very very depressed that even a surgery can’t help me lose weight.

I've read that that's normal. It was for me. Liquids and purées slid right through me the first few weeks. Once I started eating "real food", that's when the restriction kicked in. -
Like Viking Beast said, although it was counterintuitive, when I increased calories I lost more not long after weight loss surgery, The nurse explained when your body thinks it’s starving it holds onto what it has. She said it’s common; also, when you do start losing again you may lose at a faster rate. It all evens out. I ‘m about 8 months out and just barely over the weight I’d like to stay at. One week I gained one pound. I didn’t freak out. The next week I lost about a pound more than usual. It’s a process. Eight weeks is still early out and your body is getting used to it’s new normal. You’ll get there!!!

Have a mixed NSV from today! I'm 5 weeks out, and flew Southwest today to visit my parents for the holiday. I paid in advance for the COS extra seat policy, and when I got there I was stopped by a supervisor and told I wasn't big enough to qualify. I'm down 30lbs since surgery and about 45 since I last flew. The downside is that I'm still big enough that people don't exactly look thrilled to have me as a seatmate! -
Stalls are extremely common. The first usually starts in week 3 but can be earlier or later. They usually last 1-3 weeks. And yes I said the first stall. Many experience more as they progress. I liked to look at a stall as my body needing to take a breath. It’s been going through a lot: surgery, change of diet, restricted calories, etc. & it’s stressed. So just like when you’re experiencing emotional stress & you want to shut the door & pull the covers over your head your body shuts down too & you don’t lose weight. Best advice is to stick to your plan. You’ll slowly be eating more & more dense food anyway as you progress through the stages. If you are concerned have a chat with your dietician about your calorie intake especially if you’re very active again already. If not losing upsets you, avoid weighing yourself everyday. The stall will break when your body is ready. Good luck.

Alcohol For The Holidays

Have a chat with your team. The no alcohol advice tends to be for two reasons: one the calories & poor nutritional value (& no it doesn’t count as a fluid 😉). Two, the more important consideration for many is the addictive nature of alcohol. If you are someone who has a food addiction, post surgery you can’t satisfy that addiction so you turn to something else & alcohol is usually the first place people go. At about 6 weeks out I nursed a gin & tonic for hours. It was my cousin’s 40. I think I had another g&t at about 4 months, then 6 (girls weekend & at goal) then 7 months (Christmas - though was champagne). Same story sipped for hours. The tonic would be super flat & I could tolerate the bitterness. I still usually only have a glass of something about once a month or so, occasionally more often depending on what’s happening (special events) but am happy with just one glass. I used to drink one or two glasses of wine, gin or whisky every night. Don’t miss it. I go for quality now not quantity. -

UPDATE: So I had my 6 month check up with my surgeon today. He was happy with all my progress and says that I'm ahead of the game despite being in a current stall and not having lost anything since October 25th. He said he feels it has all to do with my hormones being wacky right now and expects I will start losing again soon. Although he did say that I should still keep an eye on my water intake and diet to make sure they aren't the culprit or contributing in any way. Told him about my hair loss and he said it will eventually stop and for now to add in more protein. That that should help greatly. He said I could try biotin but in his opinion, he doesn't really think it works. I told him I agreed because I used to take it years ago and didn't notice any difference either. At least for me. He told me my numbers were excellent! And he particularly was happy to see my Vitamin D levels. He said that is almost always an issues with all his patients and that I am actually an odd one when it comes to that as my level is perfect. LOL I said I guess it's the good vitamin I'm taking that has me good with everything. He said yes, and to keep taking it. We also discussed the missed periods and he thinks that's also due to the large amount of weight loss/hormones. Especially since I am not peri-menopausal or menopausal. And wouldn't you know it, a few hours after seeing him I finally got it. SMH So that's that. All seems ok still. Just gonna wait on this period to come and go and HOPEFULLY some more weight will drop. -
GYM AFTER SURGERY? LIFTING WEIGHTS?

I was made to walk immediately after surgery (within an hour of coming out of the recovery room). For two weeks I was on walking only, but no restrictions as to hills or stairs. At my two-week follow-up visit I was cleared for anything that did not require weights or abdominal tension. So I could run, bike, and jump rope, but I couldn't row or do sit-ups. I was also allowed to go from 10 to 15 pounds weight max which allowed me to use a training barbell for some exercises. At six weeks the restrictions were lifted. I spent 2-3 weeks getting back into things and trying to discover where my strength was (there's some loss but not as bad as I feared), and now at ten weeks am back into it, both manual labor as well as CrossFit. -

So happy to hit the purée stage today! Haven’t had any problems with the things I tried…poached egg for breakfast, black bean purée with cheese and salsa for dinner, and tastes of the things I puréed for the upcoming week for lunch. I will need to drink a protein shake to hit my protein goal for the day. Hang in there those still on liquids! -
Stalls do happen. If you don't lose any weight in three weeks, talk to your team. It is also possible that you are eating too few calories—I was, I stalled, my new nutritionist bumped me up, and the weight started slipping away again. How many calories are you eating per day? Are you getting enough protein? Enough liquid? Are you exercising at all?

You should notice a difference in your arthritis pain. I’m 4 weeks from my pre-op and definitely feel less pain. It’s worth it from a pain standpoint.

I’m sorry for what you are going through. It’s concerning that your team isn’t even willing to bring you in for an exam to actually make sure things are medically ok. It appears the only person on your side is your therapist. Maybe you can setup an appointment with your PCP to be checked out. Also instead of therapy once a week maybe for a few weeks or until the holidays are over having therapy two times a week. Try to journaling your thoughts. You don’t have to organize them just keep writing down them. This might help you find what could be triggering your desire to eating. You can bring this to your therapist. I do journaling i don’t do it everyday. Those days I do journal I find it helps me what triggers my bad eating habits. I’m able to bring my journal to my therapist and that’s when the hard work happens to work on turning the bad habits around to something more constructive and positive. I wish you the best and I hope you can get things resolved soon. -
Hi everyone I'm new to this so I dont really know what I'm doing ,I would like some advice please ,I had the gastric bypass 8 weeks ago ,I was 23 stone4 pound before surgery and am now 21 10 but for the last 10 days I havnt lost any weight and I am hardly eating is this normal ?

On October 4 I had gastric bypass, the first few weeks on purée and liquid stage was fine. once I reach soft food, it seem as if I could eat more than I should have. I have message my team and nutrition regarding this and they have told me that as long as I’m losing then I shouldn’t worry. there has been a few times that I would blank out and binge eat, in the course of doing that I noticed that I don’t have any restriction or discomfort when eating. This already have happened three or four times. Obviously I’m aware that I am a food attic and one of the reasons of me getting the surgery was to restrict the amount of food that I could eat and while choosing healthier options which I have been doing ,but because of weak moments is that I am unable to control myself I end up purging on food that I shouldn’t have. Just really has been a mental challenge for me and I feel as if my restriction is not there and mentally have to remind myself not to over eat have this happen to anyone? I am posting this because I want advice or any other alternative or things that I could do to improve this I already go to therapy and trying to understand my relationship with food. Sometimes I feel like I made the mistake of having the surgery.

Hello everyone 😊 I finished my last nutrition class on the 11th of November and now I am curious what is happening next? How long was it for you to get the call for your surgery date? I met my weight loss goal and passed most of my scheduled drug test ( I fail once for alcohol but that was because I thought my appointment was the week after and my friend had a birthday party the day before 😮💨 lol) -

my clinic told us a year - but it was three years before I had any alcohol. But then, I was never a big drinker before surgery, either. It seems like most clinics recommend waiting six months to a year, as you said.. -

I too am finding it WAY too easy to eat all things. I’m on soft food stage, and my meal plans involve tortilla and pasta as a few examples, which is shocking because in so many post I read, post-op peeps aren’t even trying these foods for months or even a year+ I’m 3 weeks post, and have tested the waters a bit with foods, and have had no issues or intolerances, and honestly I’m a little bummed! I was kinda hoping for that sick feeling with foods that aren’t super healthy. I feel restriction and I stop, but I always feel like I could eat more (and really want to, but don’t) and I’m hungry a lot. I wish I was one that was never Hungry and got sick looking at a pizza, but nope.
