    Kissing the Band Bye-Bye! Yes!!!

I got the band 3 years ago and researched it for 9 months before I actually went for the surgery. Back then, great things were promised with the band. Since that time, studies are showing that the least amount of weight is lost with the band and that people are increeasing reporting weight gain not to mention complications. I did not wake up one morning and decide to go for revision surgery. I had to look at all the weight loss surgeries available and then determine which one was right for me. After making the decision to have a sleeve, I then had to research surgeons to find the best one skilled in that procedure. I will not be flying into Mexico. I'm flying into CA and then being driven to the hospital which is not in the part of Mexico "in the news." I don't need more time to think about this because I took the time and am at peace with the revision surgery, the surgeon, and the hospital. I am very sorry that your surgeon would not do the surgery you wanted. I would not allow a surgeon to tell me what he would or would not do. I'm paying the surgeon. If I don't get what I am paying for, I look for someone else. Eleven pounds in 5 weeks is very good and I hope you continue to have success.

    New and saying 'Hello' !

@ hi Kate, welcome! I've actually been on this site since 2007 but only active since December 2014. I really enjoy it, have gotten a lot of great ideas and counsel, some laughs and I feel a lot of affect tion for a goodly number of the folks who participate. The exchanges bring home to me how human we all are, with our struggles and joys, our sames and differents. I rarely go a day without checking in. I'm 50, married forever with a 28 yo and a 16 yo. From the Midwest cornfields but live near wash DC now. Had a band, revised to sleeve in January and LOVE it. I love to camp and travel. Have been to 16 countries and 48 states (missing Mississippi and new Hampshire oddly). That's about the size of it. :-D
  3. Thank you cowgirl for your sensible and assuring reply. I remember when I was on the lap band forum - there was one thread for those who were revising to the gastric sleeve. This was several years ago. I remember that almost every one who had this done said: "The sleeve is what I thought the band was going to be like." I had the same experience with the band as you did. It didn't do one thing it was promoted as doing. A year after it was put in, I had a severe stuck episode that required a trip to the ER. I have never been in such pain in my life. I was in so much pain I couldn't talk. I don't think getting shot could be more painful. The person who drove me had to talk for me. I was given dilaudid (sp?) and even that just dulled the pain a little. I was vomiting, too. That was 2009. All the fill was taken out of my band. However, I still get stuck sometimes but have learned how to make myself vomit. Not pleasant. There is no rhyme or reason as to when that will happen. One small bite of chicken breast could do it. Do you get stuck with the sleeve? I sure never want to go through that experience again. Btw, I love the picture of the horse. When I was a young girl I used to fantasize about a horse like that. Beautiful.
  4. The dilated poach happens when you have the band for a long time & over eating along the years & vomiting. It's happens a lot with the band after years of having it . I had my band for almost 14 years & I helped me in the past lose & maintain my weight but I always had to put effort & diet when I gained a few pounds . It was the only available procedure at that time . I am revising to sleeve in two days , I hop the sleeve works for me .

    Feeling Let down

Sorry you are feeling let down. However I am sure that the surgeon has your best interests at heart. Surgery is dangerous and the higher your BMI the more dangerous it is . A BMI of 68 is extremely high.Far better to lose the weight prior to surgery than to die from complications on the table. It is also normal in the US to have to undergo a 6 month supervised diet prior to undergoing surgery . This proves to the insurance company that you are serious and have tried your best and are not just looking for a quick fix. you are not the first person i have heard of that has to do a 4 week preop diet. The purpose of this part of the process is to help shrink the liver. When you are obese the liver is enlarged and fatty. If it is not reduced in size prior to surgery you run the risk of having to have open as opposed to laparoscopic surgery or of it getting damaged during surgery which is highly dangerous. If your Dr suggested a bypass you need to find out why do not just dismiss his suggestion out of hand.Yes there are some Dr's that push bypass because it is their preferred surgery but your Dr may feel that a band would not suit you. With weight loss surgery there is no one size fits all - different surgeries suit different people depending on their types of eating.Bands are generally recommended for people that eat large quantities but do not have as much of an issue with sweets. bypasses are recommended where it is felt that malabsorption is also required. There is another option - the sleeve.I have even heard of people having a bypass and a band combined. Price should not be your deciding factor when choosing a surgeon. I understand that it is important but it is more important to choose an experienced surgeon that has done lots of the procedure that you choose and that has a good track record. Their are countless horror stories of things going wrong when using a cheap or inexperienced surgeon. That is not to say that all surgeons offering cheap surgery are bad but you do need to be careful. This board is a great place for you to vent, get support and do research.Read some of the threads from people that had revisions from lapband to bypass to help you with your decision as well. Wishing you all the best.

Thinking about getting my band removed

I think your concern is legitimate. I have never read of anyone who had their band removed and was able to keep their weight off. Even unfills seem to provoke weight gain, as I have experienced. Have you considered a revision surgery? There are many on this forum that have revised from the band to a sleeve or bypass, with excellent results and no issues.

    Lap band after RNY

My port flipped, my doctor found this out while trying to give me a fill. As far as I know, this can happen, but isn't "normal". I am his only patient that this has happened to, just my luck. It's been two years since the port revision and I haven't had any problems with the port. I had a lower body lift 6 months ago and the only difference is that my port scar is now much lower than my actual port, as the plastic surgeon took off over 12 inches on my abdomen. Good luck with your revision.

    4 Month Anniversary

Brad, great job. Aren't the new clothing choices great? I love that you get to revise your goal. I am hoping I will get to mine and decide to revise! Thanks for the post.
  9. I just spoke to my insurance company and the lady agreed with me it's either OR, not both. But she said she wanted to look into further and she was going to get back to me on it. She thinks the person my coordinator spoke to read the wrong one. Because there is different sections for different patients. People under 18, over 18 and revisions. So, I don't know what to do now. My coordinator cancelled my Nut. Appointment. So if it comes back I was right the whole time I'll be a month behind. And won't see a surgery until August or September. :/
  10. Hello everyone, I realize there are several threads comparing the band to the sleeve, but I am still trying to find more information from people who were unsuccessful with the band and have had the revision done for a significant amount of time. I have been morbidly obese since childhood and was banded in 2008. I lost a significant amount of weight in the first 2 years but have gained half back in 4 years since then. I am so tired of the constant obsession and shame I experience regarding my weight and food. I just wish there was some way that I would be able to better control this struggle and live a more healthy and productive life. With the band, even when it was filled to 7-8 cc, the dieting has always been much harder than I have been able to live with long-term. If I am really putting full effort into religiously controlling my intake, the band seems to lessen my hunger to a moderate degree. However, I was surprised at how subtle the feeling of restriction is with the band, and I am still able to eat large portions in one sitting without any difficulty. Right now I just need to do something drastic about my weight, either suffer through more strict dieting with the band or possibly revise to the sleeve. What I am wondering is how much of an advantage does the sleeve give you compared to the band in controlling the urge to overeat? I know that the process of surgery, with liquid diets and the novelty of a different procedure, would cause me to lose a lot of weight initially. What I want to seriously consider is whether the long-term weight management efficacy of sleeve compared to band makes this revision surgery worthwhile. Does the sleeve give you much better restriction than the band? Does the reduction of ghrelin make the constant desire to eat much more controllable? Does lowering the weight "set-point", which a surgeon I spoke with claims occurs with sleeve and bypass but not band, really help you? I would greatly appreciate hearing all thoughts and experiences.
  11. I healed a lot faster from my revision to sleeve than I did with the band. With the sleeve you don't have the same problems you have with the band. You just can't eat as much. It get's to be the new normal. The grehlin did return for me after a while but it's like normal hunger. I lost 118 lbs after my revision surgery and wear a size 6 now. The freedom is so much better. The only down side is I still struggle to get in all of my Protein and that can hinder weight loss. I've had some muscle wasting and I hit a long plateau because I wasn't getting my protein in and lost muscle so my metabolism went down. I am also hypothyroid and was vit d deficient. It's a balancing act sometime but I revised 2 years ago and I'm still chugging along. I only have a little bit more to use. Wish I had done the sleeve first.
  12. Let me cut to the chase...Lapband is a living nightmare.I have had it since 2004...I was going for a revision to the sleeve but this is my 2nd and last WLS and I have decided to go with RNY....it allows you to lose the amount you need and if you are like me I don't have the time to lose a little?.i want the proven Gold Standard with the history of success and data....Do yourself a favor and research....I thought it was the band...then then the sleeve...finally I have it RNY.I am a few pounds shy of 300 no time to play games..RNY....but it's your choice.

    REVISION to Bypass

You will do just fine. I am 4 weeks post op from the revision and am as new as can be. I had to have a few new scars but if you rub cocoa butter and vitamin E oil on them it should lessen the severity of the scar. My new scars are lighter than my old ones.
  14. Hello I just want to see if anyone have went from the Lap band to the bypass . I was banded in 2008 weighed 340 had my son in 2010 and my band silped . I'm having my bypass on sep 11 . I was wondering how it went and what was the weight loss .

  16. I've had delayed dumping syndrome due to too much fat from batter-fried fish. It appeared about 6 months after RNY>RNY revision. I had bloating and belly pain starting 24 hours after that meal. It lasted for several days, gradually improving. I feared bowel torsion but had bowel sounds and a BM so the clinic PA said it was delayed dumping. It happened again 3 weeks later after eating smoked fish. I had never heard of delayed dumping syndrome--it was much worse than sugar dumping and lasted longer. I've sworn off sugar so that's not a trigger and I've learned my lesson about eating excessively fatty food!

    My sleeve Day 1

Congrats on all of your progress post-sleeve! I had my revision first thing yesterday morning. Procedure only took an hour because there was no scarring around the band. I was home by 11am. I took a 2 hr nap when I got home. I managed about 20 oz of Water and 3/4 can of reduced sodium with one scoop of unjury chicken Protein. Had a little discomfort from the gas bloat. Today has been awesome! No gas pain. Minimal pain around the largest incision placed where my port used to be. I have 5 incisions. I've met my Fluid and protein goals. Lots of walking. Hubby and I can't believe how great I feel. Cheers! Deb
  18. I completely agree with slikchick10! I'm 5.5 weeks out from a revision and it's so much better. You truly feel full and I've only had the "slimes" twice because I didn't chew well enough. It is so weird to eat foods that used to get stuck like eggs. Your think it's gonna come back up but it doesn't LOL. I think it is worth it. Good luck with your decision.
  19. I am a 38 year old married man with 3 children. I weigh 275 pounds and have a BMI of 40. I am a football coach and have decided to do something about my weight. I saw a doctor for about a year supplementing thyroid, and testosterone and it did not help. I graduated high school and went into the military weighing 145 pounds and have been skinny until about age 23. I have went through all the tests (psych, upper gi, 6month nutrition, sleep study) The main reason I want to lose weight is to feel better and sleep better, and live longer for my kids (7,9, and 18 years old). I have had 5 knee surgeries from age 18-36 and need some weight off my knees. I have been discovered to have sleep apnea (makes sense why I was tired all the time). Monday ends my 6 month nutrition required by my insurance and we will actually set a surgery date. I am using Dr. Sonny Cavazos in San Antonio, Texas Please help me with these questions Thanks, JT 1. I want to keep this fairly private what do I tell my coworkers? 2. Anyone know anything about my doctor. 3. What percentage of people banded have to have some sort of revision?
  20. Hello GSPTians I am Pranjala from India. I am 27 years old married and am a mother of a 3 year old. I have been fat for as long as I can remember. Obesity runs in my family an so does diabetes. I stand 165 cm tall, weigh 100 kg and suffer from NO co-morbidities so far. I have done several successful weight loss attempts in the past, but few slacks here and there and my weight would always come back crossing the last highest point. I have always loved to exercise but now that I have grown so fat my body doesn't seem to cooperate. The only place I lack is that I am a big foodie with a huge appetite, if I control it I can conquer my battle with the flab. Before comming to this forum I've already had appointments with a couple of surgeons, what left me insecure was the fact that even before evaluating me physically or mentally properly they put me under the category of "suitable for sleeve". But as a matter of fact, I am dead scared of the fact that a part of my stomach will be taken away which has always been a part of me( I am actually sentimental about it); and that staples can (and will) cause scarring over time which may arise a condition for a revision. Anyways, I then came across GSP. And this forum is loaded with so many encouraging stories. Not many surgeons in India do this procedure, and so they tell me its a potential failure (even before it has hit the markets properly). I don't want to believe them blindly, as some doctors have a money mincing attitude(plication is definately cheaper). I just want to know how long can the sutures stay in our system ie. the sutures might give in after a certain period of time(would that require a revision too?). Staples vs sutures what is more acceptable to the body? Can there arise a condition like suture replacement in the future? Will I face any nutritional deficiencies or any food intolerance or dumping syndrome or massive hair loss or wrinkled skin(as I have seen in a lot of female sleeve cases)? Can I do stomach exercises like crunches or breathing exercises after plication? Will there be sever pain after surgery due to the peristalsis of gastric muscle, if yes then for how long? My quarries might sound funny but if you do the needful by throwing some light on them, I will be more confidant with my decision.

    Band vs sleeve??

And how has your experience been? I'm so terrified of the band slipping or having to have a revisions etc
  22. My doc used to do band removal and then wait for healing and do sleeve. Now if at all possible he does the removal of the band and the sleeve in the same surgery. He said it seems easier on the patient then 2 surgeries and he can usually get the band out pretty fast. My surgery was 3 hours. There is no way I was going to have it in two surgeries. I was only wiling for them to do their best to do the revision in one. And thankfully that is how it went.

4weeks post op scared of leak

I know that's what I thought but I was told that sometimes you can have the leak but it goes undetected due to the inflammation ! Once that subsides it shows up like no tomorrow , I was revised from the Lapband so I have a higher chance of having one ????my doctor has told me not to worry , I'm getting a test next week just do I can be in peace ! Thanks I need it !

2Nd Surgery And Still No Sleeve!

Be thankful though, in that if your surgeon was not confident in his ability to make it work and had tried anyway, disaster would have followed. Perhaps your new surgeon will have more experience with revisions. Good luck!

    "Slipped?"

Once you have slipped you will most likely continually slip. I slipped and slipped less than a month later. I had revision surgery about 3 weeks ago. Hope that helps.
