Getting Banded on the 19th of October

I'm getting banded on the 31st October in Traralgon and just wanted to wish you luck...when are you starting the Optifast?? I was told 6 weeks on it is best...doing 5 and a half really! Excited??? Nervous??? Pigging out and eating all the things you're gonna miss? :hungry:

    Band hell

Hi Rocky I hope you are feeling better. I am feeling a bit better myself. I am also optimistic that the swelling will go down. I do worry that it will swell again when they close it again. However, I know that every pound I loose will give it a bit more room so since I am on liquids anyway I am sure I will loose a few pounds in the next 4 weeks. Also, my doctor said that the procedure to close it is not even close to the amount of trauma to the body as when the band was put on. So I think everything will be fine. I am glad your band is still hooked and you can get fluids in. The swelling will go down soon. You have stuck it out this far a day or 2 will make a big difference in swelling.

Did anyone else have this problem?

I agree. Of course, we all hope we're going to be among the lucky ones who lose weight during the first weeks -- but whether we are or not is almost completely beyond our control. A lot of people lose or gain many pounds of water in the weeks immediately after band surgery. I know it's hard to be patient, especially if you've had to wait a long time to get your band, but hang in there. You are totally normal. Your band just isn't in working order yet -- kind of like a new car that hasn't had the engine installed.

HELP ! BLOCKAGE or SLIPPAGE ON VACATION IN USA

Have you tried papaya enzyme? (get it at a drugstore or large grocery store) If it helps then you know to just do liquids for 48 hours to allow the internal swelling to subside. If that doesn't help, I think a trip to the ER. And did you have problems with this type of thing before the vacation? I only ask because, at least as far as I know, it is uncommon to "unfill" a patient for vacation and usually unfilled people, especially 3 years post op, don't have any trouble eating. So if you had issues before, you may have a slip. Only your physician or an x-ray/barium swallow etc could tell; we aren't really the best ones to ask if you have a slip, and/or if you can make it for 4 weeks as you are. That being said; I hope the enzymes help you and you feel better and can continue your vacation safely.

    Same Problem....Different Reason

I've been having the same problem. I just transferred jobs and I have to dress up everyday. 2 weeks ago I bought a size 20 and it was snug. I also bought an 18 thinking they'd last me awhile. Well, the 20 is too big and the 18 is already getting loose! It's so frustrating, but at the same time I love that this is happening! My new wardrobe consists of black pants and shirts that can go with those pants. I figure I can survive with 2 pair of pants in each size, considering lately I'm going through a size every other week, this is getting expensive! However, with all the money I'm saving on junk food I guess I can afford it!
  6. I was banded on 7/31/07. In the first 13 months that i had my band I rapidly dropped weight losing 130 pounds in the first 13 months. Then I went for another fill, that I was hoping would land me at goal. It was done under fluro, but even still I was far too tight. I stayed with it for months being stubborn & foolishly ignoring the discomfort and other signs of a problem. Finally when I couldn't take it anymore I was unfilled and because I had hurt my stomach in the process ALL of my fill was removed. I regained about forty pounds before I was filled back up to my sweet spot again so I had to re-lose that weight. I learned my lesson and have been very careful with how tight I am. The pounds no longer melt off so I exercise even more then I had previously 6 days a week either doing cardio, elliptical, belly dancing, zumba or yoga. This past April I completed my first half marathon. I've had many NSVs, but landing in Onderland feels incredible!!! Goal here I come !!!

    I had a fill on 04/16 (Help)

I don't know bandit, I got a fill 2 weeks ago and only dropped a 1-2 lbs, and I can hardly eat anything that will stay down. I couldn't even get a milkshake to stay down today. I'm considering getting some taken out Thursday, I'm sooooo tired of pbing.

    The biggest Loser tonights show

Candysmooch, I just went to the website and Mo hasn't updated his results in a while. You can check here http://www.nbc.com/The_Biggest_Loser/contestants/wherearetheynow/mo.shtml I thought I heard that some of season one's contestants will be on the finale this week. I hope to see MO, he was my favorite from season one. My favorite from season two is Dr. Jeff. I broke my heart when the voted him off. But he is doing great and I am looking forward to seeing him at the Finale this week. Matt drives me crazy crying all the time! That boy needs an antidepressant. Yes he looks great so far, but stop crying on every show! Seth and Suzy have done great jobs but I lost interest when Dr Jeff was voted off. Good luck to all of them!! And may the biggest loser win!!!

    Frustrated and disappointed

The thing is people focus to much on feeling restriction and not enough on eating correct. I am less then 2 months post op and down 65 lbs. It has not been easy. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week for 1 hour of cardio. I also am eating 800-1200 cal a day. That is it no snacking no soda very little carbs. I do nto have as much restriction as I should but I have learned to eat to live and not live to eat. You should start looking at all lables and working out 3 days a week start slow 15-30 min is all you need. I know it will work. I have a almost non existing matabolism but with the right caloric intake and exercise the weight will come off. Just keep your head up.
  10. I had my surgery in December 2004 and I've been doing very well with my band. I weighed 205 when I was banded and I made it down to 124 lbs. Over the summer I experienced severe restriction without having a fill. My doctor removed the fill and waited a couple of weeks then gave me a very small fill. This was in Sept. After my small fill I never felt the restriction. I started to put some weight on. I went back to the doctor, scheduled another fill and went in today. It was under flouro and we both watched as he filled me up and I had no restriction. He thinks my band erroded and now I have to an endoscopy. I'm so worried because I finally reached my goal weight and my doctor doesn't seem like he's willing to have me rebanded if my band erroded. I still don't know for sure but there really is no other explaination. I'm just devasted.

    Weight Lose Slowing Down

I am at the last 12 lb. It is SO SLOW. I've been sitting here at the same weight for weeks trying to do what ever I can to get it off, but those 12 lb are stubborn little suckers! I think my body is going WHOA!! I know it will come off eventually, but only when my body is good and ready to give them up. I practice patience and keep up what I've always been doing. Hang in there!

Soon to be banded. 11/23 AAAHHHHHH Nerves

I am 5' tall and was 234. I call myself the weeble wobble. I had no comorbidity, in other words I have no illnesses. I didn't have high BP my cholesterol was only up 2 points and down 2 points for good cholesterol. I had no signs of diabetes but I have Hypothyroidism which causes weight gain and then PCOS which causes weight gain. So with the odds stacked against me and wanting to be proactive I was blessed that the insurance approved me. As far as the first few weeks, they are tough, liquid diet to mushy to solids. Definately research recipes ahead of time, it will make your life so much easier to have several ideas for mushy foods. I made thick chili with bison meat. 4oz or half a cup was 23g of Protein. The pain wasn't that bad, as long as you don't lay around. You have to get up and walk and it is uncomfy, but it is much more uncomfortable to have gas trapped in your body. Once on solids before a fill, you are going to be hungry at times, Water, water, water, fluids, fluids, fluds. Stay away from sugar and carbs and you should loose weight fine. I wish you the best of luck.
  13. In the beginning, I was having trouble with meat also....my Surgeon said that is not unusual... Since all my Dr.'s have been preaching to me about cutting back on Red Meat to once a week at least, and MANY of my friends have gone vegetarian....I figured it was as good as time as any since this is to be a all out life changing event... So I have been without red meat for 1 1/2 years now..... I'm not fanatical about it....I'm not picky if meat is in chili, etc,. you just won't see me ordering a steak, roast or pork chops.....fir instance. Plus I'm sure it will not go down anyway..... Again, one of the best decisions I've made...I can definitely tell the difference....
  14. Parisshel..... I love how you realized the band allowed you to break free from DIETing. I remember B52 used to say the same thing, and as a newbie at the time.... I didn't get it! I do now as I continue on my journey. My 89 year old mother constantly asks me when we go out to lunch, "Can you eat this? Can you eat that?" YES, mother..... I CAN eat almost anything. The band does the work of allowing me to only eat a small portion of THIS or THAT. I, too, stay away from THE WHITE STUFF..... My choice because it is my nemesis. As with most things people have to deal with, WE CAN DO ANYTHING FOR A GIVEN AMOUNT OF TIME..... You got this..... This DIET will only last three months. Best Wishes!
  15. I've also heard such dire predictions from the so called "nay sayers", and also that on average an individual will loose only 66% of their excess weight with the band. My weight loss has also been basically stalled over the past few months, but I do attribute that to the 2 surgeries I have had since December, 2012. I will reach my first "bandiversary" short of my goal, however also 78 lbs less than I was, and much healthier from a clinical standpoint. I have little doubt that I will reach my goal, as I know how to work with my band and how to eat a healthy, band friendly diet. The carb addiction which was a major factor of my weight gain is in the past, and I am vigilant to keep it there. I know from my history, it will be the exercise which will help me reach my goal. It helped me to begin to use a "Fitbit", which helped me see how many calories my activity level that day had burned, and it motivated me to get on track and exercise more regularly. I still lack the patience to participate in "My Fitness Pal", at least I believe that is where you log your foods daily. I just try to stay with basic and unprocessed foods, and that has worked for me. I also believe that motivation for success and maintaining focus on goals are integral parts to successful weight loss. We will all get to where we want to be weight wise, if we are sufficiently motivated to get there!
  16. I have been a diabetic for most of my life My whole family is overweight so 8 yeras ago when I became overweight and my sugar controll went crazy I knew I had to make a change Afetr many diets and no weight loss my Diabetic doc oked teh lap band. I am two months post op and overall doing ok I healed great considering how I normally heal due to me being a diabetic. BUT I am having a horriable time with running ketones I just had my first fill two weeks ago and the dietian whats me on a max of 1000 cal per day I am normally around 800-900 cal. The doc says it is normal to run ketones because of burning fat But I feel horriable has anyone else had this same thing being a type one diabetic? Any ideas of how I can keep my cal down still loose the weight and not feel horriable like I am? I have lost 47lbs from the two week pre op diet until now so in about 2 and a half months I am just looking for any thoughts about this . I would not do anything different I am feeling lots better with the weight being gone. Thank you

Band bound in St. Louis, MO on 12/28!!

Hope all goes well for you! I was banded on 12/13 and am doing really well. I'm down about 26 lbs in my first two weeks!

Just got the band three days ago

Hi Megan, Welcome..... I'm sorry to hear you are having gas pain, I did as well. I was banded on 4/26 and I still continue to have inermittent gas pains in my shoulder, chest and lower stomach although they are much better than they were. Unfortunately my doctor told me that these can hang around for up to a week or so and as gross as it sounds you just have to "let it out" when it wants to come out and try walking as much as possible. Congratulations on getting banded! Faith

Has anyone had their esophagus dialated?

Hi there...I had surgery last week for a hiatal hernia & replacement of my lapband and am doing great. I had a 4cc lapband placed in me in July 2008. I had a lot of restriction from the beginning and was only able to to get one fill. After a fill, I had constant reflux & food was hard to keep down. I had to get an unfill a few weeks afterward and was empty until 3 weeks ago. I decided to get a fill after having nothing for 4 months and I was only able to put .3 cc's in my band. There was obvious irriation and we couldn't figure out why. After one week of the fill, I started having reflux again. After having it unfilled last Saturday, the doctor said I still showed complete restriction. She said I should stay on liquids only, no sodium. I woke up on Sunday dehydrated and still having a struggle keeping water down. I went to the emergency room and they immediately started rehydrating me, did an upper gi, endoscopy, and finally a ct scan which showed a severe hiatal hernia. What I failed to tell you is that I had my lapband surgery in Mexico. I didn't know anything about different sizes of lapbands. The bariatric surgeon here in the U.S. that attended me this past week said that they never put a 4 cc band in anyone. IT's way too small and they're certain that my hiatal hernia was caused by my band being too small for my anatomy. Even though my hiatal hernia was pretty severe, they were able to replace my lapband and put a 14 cc band in. I was so excited that I didn't have to remove it permanently. Do you know what size band you have?
  20. You are lucky that you are moving onto stages of real food. I don't even get soup or yogurt until Thursday. I wonder what would be good pureed too? Can you puree a cheeseburger? Lol... yes, it's still on my mind. Can you eat cottage cheese? That is in my "soft foods" stage and I can't wait 'cause I love the stuff. I can't wait until I can start eating "real" meals again, though. I'm looking forward to week four of my diet because I can start eating soft fish! Yay Friday fish fry!

What is a realistic WL monthly target?

I just had my 5 week follow up today and they said they want to see 35 percent of excess weight lost by 3 months. My excess weight from day of surgery was 100 lbs, so I hope to be down at least 35 pounds by 3 months. Today at week 5 I’m down 22 lbs so I’m on a good path.
  22. I think having any expectation around weight loss is difficult. It’s really going to depend on: - how long ago your surgery was (it’s faster right after, it definitely slows down after 6 months - age/height/gender (never ever compare yourself to a 20 something male!!) - current weight (if your BMI is very high, you can reasonably expect a higher loss) - activity levels and exercise - your diet (how closely are you following it? What are your calories/macros? Some plans target faster weight loss, eg keto, some aim for you to lose slow and steady. - other factors, eg your hormones, gut microbiome). Even then, there will be fluctuations. Some months you will lose more and some less. This is a long road for some of us. And you will stall, and then suddenly you will drop a few rounds really quickly. And it will be annoying. My advice is to be patient and honest with yourself. If it is weight loss is slow, assess how you can improve without beating yourself up!

    Delicious Chili

I am now 2 weeks. And feel I might implode. Finally did get some relief the other night and it was hilarious. My 4 year old slept with me that night and I had my escape valve finally blow. Here is this little guy who out of dead sleep wakes and says "Mom, if you fart again and giggle shaking the bed I'm sending you to jail. I need to sleep not worry about breathing." I told him I was to be called the Tormentor. Gotta love a kid that young that has such a great sense of humor already.

    Removal in 10 days

Since I had emergency removal I didn't have a pre-op diet. I did have egg whites a week before removal but that was they only solid thing I'd had in weeks. I definitely was not getting in enough protein and my bloodwork from the ER showed it all. I'm close to 43 hours post op. Still struggling to get in protein, im on clear liquids so no shakes for me.

    From There to Here

I've been thinking about Weight Loss Surgery for a long time, but could not seriously pursue it until my husband concurred, which was last fall. We attended an informational seminar in Palm Springs CA over the winter and began looking for a surgeon then. We were in CA for the winter, but moving to WA state at the end of April. My medical insurance is Medicare/Tricare for Life, so I had to use a "Center of Excellence". I was able to make an appointment with Dr. Jeffrey Hunter at Virginia Mason Clinic in Federal Way WA. We met with him on May 3, 2007 and he thoroughly discussed the pros and cons of both bypass and lapband surgery. He told me that he would want me to lose 10% of my body weight prior to surgery. I weighed in at 325 that day. I started a 1000-1200 calorie diet the next day. I lost about 2 lb. a week for the first three weeks. Then the weight loss stalled and so did my enthusiasm. In a short time, I had regained the 7 lb. I was supposed to have a second appointment with Dr. Hunter in early June, but his nurse, Stephen called me early that week and told me that I didn't need to come in until I'd lost the weight. So the next day I started on a 350-500 calorie diet. Its been three weeks and I've now lost 20 lb. Last week, after several phone calls to report my weight loss thus far, Stephen called me back with a surgery date of July 20. I will have to go in about 10 days prior to that for pre-op appointments with Dr. Hunter, the dietician and the anesthesia department. :ranger:
